Guest: Tony Vinciquerra, outgoing CEO of Sony PicturesTony Vinciquerra never planned to get into the entertainment business, let alone to become one of the most powerful people in Hollywood. After seven years, he's about to leave the CEO role at Sony Pictures (although he will stay on as chairman for one more year) and attributes much of his success to luck: “I've been in the right place at the right time a lot of times.” That said, he also encourages his children to proactively be curious, something that has served Tony well across his whole career. “I don't have as deep an education as many of the people that [I] compete with,” he says. “So I try to make up for that by knowing what's going on and being more curious ... working harder at it and being more — I don't know what the right word is, but sucking more information in, all the time.”Chapters:(00:54) - The perks of being a studio boss (03:38) - Hulu and Peter Chernin (06:41) - Fox Television (10:03) - Building relationships (13:37) - Not retiring (15:34) - Fixing Sony (23:29) - Intellectual property (26:58) - Juggling and baseball (29:30) - Setbacks and cable networks (34:58) - The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes (37:22) - AI and replacing writers (39:46) - Adapting to new tech (44:38) - Changing consumer behavior (49:25) - Sports media and live TV (55:31) - Bad days (58:57) - Tony's family (01:02:47) - Looking back (01:05:04) - Proactive curiosity (01:07:33) - What “grit” means to Tony Mentioned in this episode: Jason Kilar and Warner Bros., Jeff Zucker, John Waldron and Goldman Sachs, FX, Drayton McLane, Netflix, Variety, PlayStation, Spider-Man, Tom Rothman, CBS and Paramount, Comcast and NBC, Disney, Mike Hopkins, Amazon Prime, Funimation, Crunchyroll, Breaking Bad, The Last of Us, HBO, Uncharted, WBZ-TV, the Game Show Network, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Joker: Folie à Deux, Miramax, Here, Tom Hanks, Venom: The Last Dance, Michael Ovitz, Sam Altman and OpenAI, Pixomondo, Neal Mohan and YouTube, Susan Wojcicki, DirecTV and AT&T, NFL Sunday Ticket, Qualcomm, the New York Knicks, the Golden State Warriors, Larry Baer and the San Francisco Giants, Major League Baseball, Walmart and Vizio, Madame Web, Capital Cities, Mark McLaughlin, and Mark Fields and Ford.Links:Connect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

Or sitting through courses you don't find valuable. What if you could satisfy your continuing education requirements on your own terms, and with less time required?

In 1990, John Waldron had his “light bulb” moment. After working with a potential client to create a comprehensive tax, investment, and business restructuring strategy, John was asked by the client to execute the plan. There was only one problem. Regulations in place prohibited accounting firms from engaging in securities transactions on behalf of clients. Six months later, John left his Big Six accounting firm position to start his own private wealth management company. At the time, an independent fee-based investment management practice was a disruptive and cutting-edge concept. John’s entrepreneurial instincts were proven correct, and today, this business model is considered the gold standard in the industry.Over the past 30 years, Waldron Private Wealth has continued to innovate, expand, and lead in the wealth management marketplace. John has meticulously built a talented team of financial experts and investment professionals who hold credentials such as Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Financial Analyst, and Certified Financial Planner. Their areas of expertise are wide-ranging and include philanthropy, tax, estate planning, business consultation, investments, and real estate. Waldron Private Wealth has consistently received top rankings and recognition from sources such Barron’s, Financial Times, and Forbes. Recently, John authored his first book titled “The Entrepreneurial Journey: Navigating a Successful Path for Your Business, Family, and Future.”If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Welcome to this week's episode of No Really, I'm Fine. In this podcast I travelled to London to meet John Waldron, a mental health nurse who works at St Andrew's Care. St Andrew's Care is a mental health charity, who provide specialist care for those who have severe mental illnesses.I spoke to John, who has worked at St Andrews for many years, about his new podcast On the Ward - which goes behind the scenes at St Andrew's. We also chatted about John's job and what it's like to work at a mental health hospital, in the hope of breaking down that stigma which unfortunately still surrounds mental health institutions today. This episode may be a trigger for those who have suicidal thoughts or for those who have been detained under the mental health act - however it also may help. Summary:In this 99th episode of Fintech Impact, Jason Pereira, award-winning financial planner, university lecturer, writer, and host welcomes John Waldron, founder of Learnedly, to talk about how financial services firms handle ongoing education. Episode Highlights: ● 00:30: – John explains Learnedly as Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning but for Canadian financial services professionals. ● 01:37: – John founded Learnedly because he found that it’s empowering to learn new ways to help your clients, and he wanted to make that learning accessible. ● 02:55: – There was a demand in the industry for video-based content that was accessible on mobile. ● 05:00: – A lot of Learnedly is inspired by and based in part on Lynda.com, which has now even sent Learnedly business. ● 06:51: – With things changing in the industry and with technology so quickly, a platform that can be updated and referenced in real-time became more and more necessary. ● 08:42: – With short-form courses like this, you can make a commitment to lifelong learning with only 30 minutes a week. ● 09:25: – People are most motivated to learn and retain the information the best when they are in a position of needing to know something, and then put that knowledge to use shortly thereafter. ● 11:00: – We take for granted how incredible a resource YouTube is, providing all this education for free, but you have to wade through a lot of low-quality content and Learnedly is a curated, high-quality platform. ● 11:30: – Learnedly costs only $20 per month, in alignment with John’s belief that education is a right, not a privilege, and should be priced accordingly. ● 12:15: – John shares how he was introduced to the financial services world by taking a Securities course in order to learn how to be responsible with his own money. ● 17:00: – Some of Learnedly’s courses are approved for Continuing Education credits, and users can expect a true mobile experience with video that can stream on desktop, tablet, or phone, and can be downloaded for offline viewing. ● 19:03: – Everything on Learnedly is researched and written beforehand, and video content takes ten times the effort of merely writing when you have to prepare, film, and edit the videos. ● 20:55: – Learnedly has received positive feedback thus far and they plan to grow exponentially over the next six months. ● 23:09: – In addition to supporting your current work needs, Learnedly can be used to grow your skills and help you advance in your career. ● 28:10: – An advantage to Learnedly is that because their content is so modular, in 1-2 minute videos, if something changes in the industry, they only have to edit and replace small clips rather than entire courses. ● 29:13: – If John could change one thing in the industry, it would be the level of complacency. ● 31:50: – AI and automation are real things that will impact the industry in the future. ● 33:35: – The advisors who believe that automation will eliminate their jobs are usually the advisors who don’t often deal with people face-to-face and those who treat their jobs in a highly transactional way that could easily be replaced by a computer. ● 36:53: – The biggest challenge has been that Learnedly is a subscription service, so getting the content ready for launch and continuing to build the library was a big lift. ● 39:18: – John is most excited about filling the need for education among the financial services industry. 3 Key Points 1. Learnedly supports an attitude of lifelong learning. 2. Learnedly disrupts the traditional model of very expensive, outdated certification courses. 3. The future is not a choice between human labor and automation, but will inevitably be a hybrid. Tweetable Quotes: ● “People learn more and they retain more when they need to know something. When they’re in that moment where they need to know, that’s when they are motivated to learn and when their retention is the greatest.” –John Waldron ● “One of the other big challenges is that regulations do change, taxes change, new tax incentives, credits, and other things change, but the industry textbooks don’t change nearly as often.” –John Waldron Resources Mentioned: ● Facebook – Jason Pereira’s Facebook ● LinkedIn – Jason Pereira’s LinkedIn ● FintechImpact.co – Website for Fintech Impact ● https://www.learnedly.com/ ● https://www.miraclemorning.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
John Waldron is a busy man. He’s almost a year into his role as Goldman Sachs COO and President, and he’s also a father of six. In this episode, Waldron demystifies his day-to-day and explains why he’s even more focused on executing on the title “COO” than “president.” “My role right now really is to first learn the firm and understand the inner workings of the firm, and so that’s a really operationally intensive job, thus the chief operating officer component,” says Waldron. “The president job comes into play more on an external basis where you’re out with clients, with governments, with regulators and other external constituencies where that title has real resonance.” Waldron also discusses how younger employees can identify and invest in mentors, as well as the importance of recharging out of the office. For Waldron, that means getting home for dinner with his family if he has to head out to a client event later in the evening. “I’ll have a little bit of peanut butter and jelly and then I’ll have a steak tartare later on,” he tells podcast host Jake Siewert.
“The Professor” John Waldron, along with Adam and Ian Waldron, return to talk about John's time working with the Florida Park Service, his passion for outdoor activities, working with state agencies, and his upcoming podcast “The Florida Outdoor Experience.” They also discuss Ian and Adam's business “All Rec Solutions,” some of their trail work, the infamous Crested Caracara, their future business aspirations, and the meaning of “forest bathing” (it's not what you think!)

Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
This is our second visit with aviation artist and historian John Mollison. In this interview, John discusses his newest film, the award-winning South Dakota Warrior: The John Waldron Story. On 4 June, 1942, LtCDR John C. Waldron led 29 other men into battle against the Japanese at the Battle of Midway. The result was (nearly) utter annihilation of his squadron...and the moment that assured that the United States would utterly defeat the Japanese. His mission led to the destruction of four Japanese aircraft carriers (the Soryu, the Hiryu, the Kaga and the Akagi) during the Battle of Midway, which changed the course of the war in the Pacific. In Mollison's film, we learn the John Waldron story and the lessons of the Battle of Midway.

The rise of mobile devices is affecting ecommerce. More consumers are using these devices to shop online and more merchants are using them to collect payments. Two experts in the credit card business spoke with us about processing payments on mobile devices. They are John Waldron, CEO of Merchant Focus, and Derek Del Conte, CEO of innerfence, which makes Credit Card Terminal, a popular iPhone application. Together, they have just purchased another mobile credit card processor called AppNinjas, and they spoke with Practical Ecommerce’s Kerry Murdock to review that acquisition and the future of mobile payment processing.
AuctionCheckout offers a competitively priced merchant account package that is an alternative to PayPal. It’s one resource in the marketplace that can be used by an ecommerce owner to serve as a merchant account on his site and also be integrated on an auction site like eBay and Overstock so an ecommerce owner doesn’t need multiple payment channels. John Waldron and Sloane Bouchever acquired AuctionCheckout (www.auctioncheckout.com) in mid-July and recently spoke to Practical Ecommerce’s Contributing Editor Mitch Bettis.
We will be talking to Executive Producer, John Waldron about the movie production of Locker 13 and the western town built to produce the movie. Locker 13 is the story of Skip (Jason Spisak, The Vampire Diaries), a young ex-convict who takes a position as a night janitor at an old-west theme park. His supervisor Archie (Jon Gries, Napoleon Dynamite), teaches him the ropes, but more importantly attempts to convey critical philosophical messages through a series of four stories: a down and out boxer (Ricky Schroder, NYPD Blue, Silver Spoons, The Champ) is given the opportunity to become a real golden gloves killer; an assassin (Rick Hoffman, Suits, Battleship) kidnaps three people in order to find out who hired him for his latest hit; a new recruit (Bart Johnson, High School Musical) is initiated into a lodge of fez-wearing businessmen where hazing can take a malevolent turn; and a member of a suicide club (Jason Marsden, Boy Meets World, White Squall) introduces real fear into a man about to jump to his death. The four stories suddenly come into play when Skip is faced with a life-or-death decision.
