This episode we talk with the ethereal Bailey Bigger about her new album "Resurrection Fern" and how she has grown and changed since her last album was released. Resurrection Fern explores vulnerability, nature, and growth, all delivered through Bigger's distinctive lens. Known for her enchanting melodies and impeccable lyricism, Bigger dives deep into themes of renewal, fragility, and the resilience found in the human spirit. Each track feels like a conversation with an old friend, guiding listeners through moments of self-discovery and connection. As a storyteller, she paints pictures that are as vivid as they are introspective, drawing on personal experiences and weaving them into universal truths. Her poetic approach to music, combined with a rich vocal presence, marks her as one of the most exciting new voices in today's music landscape. With this release, Bigger continues to prove why she's being hailed as a fresh voice for her generation. Her ability to channel complex emotions into beautifully simple yet profound songs sets her apart, and Resurrection Fern is a testament to her growth as an artist and storyteller. The 24 year old singer/songwriter/instrumentalist has collected back to back nominations at the Arkansas Country Music Awards, been named Songwriter of the Year in Memphis, won Audience-Favorite music video at Indie Film Fest, and has had multiple songs featured on TrueSouth on SEC Television. Bigger has traveled the country over the last four years, enchanting audiences with her siren song and classic American songwriting. She has shared stages and festival lineups with Sierra Ferrell, The Local Honeys, The Avett Brothers, and toured alongside Joe Purdy and Trampled by Turtles. Bailey's voice has graced the stages of Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Bluebird Cafe, Georgia Theater, and many festivals including FloydFest, Americanafest, and Memphis in May. Much inspired by her own Celtic heritage, folklore of the world surrounding her, and connection to the natural world, Bailey's new record, “Resurrection Fern,” (releasing October 25th) takes the listener on a journey through the four seasons, and the cycles of death that we, and the earth, face every year. Leaning into the mystery and lore of the unknown, human emotions, and the wild nature within all of us, “Resurrection Fern,” captures the magic that Bailey found within her years of tuning in deeper with the natural cycles, and the primal knowledge within. One of the things I've noticed over the last few years with all that has happened in the world is that so many people don't like authority. Whether it's in the workplace, the church, politics, or some other place, so many struggle with submitting to God given authority in their lives. Can you relate? We continue our series, Church: Why Bother?, where together we learn about the beautiful design God created for YOU and His church. In the book, 1 Timothy, we also see it is also the same case for some of the Ephesian believers. They also needed that reminder as we do today, to answer the question; how should we live in response to the God given authority over us?Listen to our newest message of the series, Living Under the Yoke, and accept that Christians under authority serve a higher authority!
This week, songs about saying goodbye performed by a variety of artists recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Farewells have produced some of our most powerful and emotional works of art. Goodbye is a theme endlessly explored in paintings, sculpture, literature and film. Music is no different. In this episode, we'll hear songs of farewell written for everything from beloved people, to places, careers, innocence, life, and even a horse. Featured are experimental folk ensemble Jayme Stone & the Lomax Project with Moira Smiley, renowned cowboy singer Don Edwards, the Paul Brock Band with Dennis Carey & Dave Curley, Smithsonian Folkways artists Anna & Elizabeth, Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser with cellist Natalie Haas, Texas swing and bluegrass phenomenon The Purple Hulls, John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Smithsonian Folkways artists Lula Wiles, traditional fiddler Bruce Molsky, folk singer and actor Joe Purdy & friends, and ubiquitous cowboy cadre Riders in the Sky. It comes so naturally! We see someone and our brain makes a judgement call. When you look out at the world - when you meet other people - what do you see? How do you measure the people in your life? As we continue through our message series, James: Live the Truth, James earnestly pleads with us to measure people by God's standards, not our own. Listen with us to our newest message, Seeing with the Eyes of Faith, as we recognize that a mature faith shows no favoritism, but sees others through God's point of view!
Over the last five weeks, we've examined five different places our culture tells us to look for fulfillment in this world. Like the writer, we hope to leave a lasting mark, enjoy the best this life has to offer, and accumulate the greatest knowledge and possessions we can in our lifetime – and we find ourselves forever hungry for MORE. Today, at the close of our series, Smoke & Mirrors: Deciphering Truth in a World of "truths," we come to our final question: does anything in this world truly matter? Is there any meaning to this life? Listen with us in today's message, Fallen Purpose: Nihilism, as we turn to the pages of Ecclesiastes and discover that God is life!
In this back-by-popular-demand rebroadcast, legendary singer, songwriter, actor, and author Steve Earle returns to eTown. Rootsy folk singer and songwriter Joe Purdy joins us, as well. Plus, our eChievement Award winner this week is a woman from North Carolina who's come up with a unique way to feed the hungry and bring her community together at the same time.

Show Notes Episode 275: New York City? We Heard You Was Dead! This week Host Dave Bledsoe demands Snake Plissken return the President to New York, we would like to have a LONG talk with him. On the show this week, we discuss the premature obituaries of The Big Apple. (Just like Snake, we ain't dead!) Along the way we learn about Dave's similarity to an Abe Vigoda character the youngs never heard of, about the exodus of the rich and douchey, white women whining about Brown people in their neighborhood and of course James Altucher's “essay” declaring New York City dead forever. (Hey, Jimmy, why don't come back up here and say it to our face! Fuggedaboutit!) Finally we explain AGAIN, why New York is nowhere NEAR The Bad Old Days. (When the whores in Times Square aren't owned by corporate management we can talk!) Our Sponsor this week is Money Movers, getting the useless rich out of town as fast we can! Renowned Arkansas Americana and true folk singer-songwriter and film actor Joe Purdy recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Joe Purdy is joined in this performance by duos the Honey Dewdrops and also Smokey & the Mirror. Also, interviews with Joe. “From his home state of Arkansas to his home in Los Angeles, Joe Purdy has recorded a baker’s dozen worth of albums. His songs have turned up on numerous TV shows and film soundtracks. Most notably, however, in recent years the singer, songwriter and self-described “hillbilly” has come to see the world and his role in it somewhat differently, charting this direction on his latest album, "Who Will Be Next?” Here he firmly plants his feet deep in the tradition of folk artists such as Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, applying his unique skills as writer and vocalist as a passionate observer and participant of our times.” - http://www.joepurdy.com Joe is joined onstage by two different husband and wife Americana and true folk duos The Honey Dewdrops and Smokey & the Mirror. “Based out of Baltimore, MD, the Honey Dewdrops continue a long line of husband and wife duos making beautiful music together. Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish now reside in Baltimore, but have strong connecting roots to the music in their home state of Virginia.” https://www.thehoneydewdrops.com “Smokey & The Mirror is husband and wife duo Bryan and Bernice Hembree. Based out of Fayetteville, Arkansas, the Smokey & The Mirror have toured nationally/internationally over the past decade. The band has supported tours for Old Crow Medicine Show, The Wood Brothers, I’m With Her, Elephant Revival, John Fullbright, and many of their musical heroes.” - http://www.smokeyandthemirror.com In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1978 archival recording of Ozark original Sam Younger and himself performing the song “Kicking Mule,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins investigates historic outlaws of the Ozarks. Many famous outlaws including Bonnie & Clyde and Pretty Boy Floyd have hidden out in the Ozarks. Brooks guides us through this cult of criminality, recounting details of the Ozark experiences of Bonnie & Clyde in part three of this series called “Public Enemy.”

Firstly, the electronic simplicity and repetition threatens to ditch listeners with a short attention span within seconds. But wait… there's more here than that. With tons of miniature soundbites all craving your attention day after day I can see why people would leave this. However, when repetition and irony are this good then we can take it for hours. It's all getting withered down to cope with our lack of attention. For instance, Tobin revealed recently on the show that music is no being structured for Instagram listeners. Songs are now being crammed into only sixty seconds. Secondly, Tom's obvious adoration of Mark E Smith shines through here.

Welcome to the magic. Experience the masterful songwriting and musical genius that is Cat Power (Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall). With 10 studio albums to her name, she's a musical force to be reckoned with. As a result of Karl Lagerfeld seeing her smoking a cigarette outside the Mercer Hotel in New York she became the spokesperson for a line of Chanel jewellery. In addition, Cat Power has been featured in commercials for Cingular and De Beers. Her version of Space Oddity by David Bowie was used in a commercial for a Lincoln car and she was involved in advertising for GAP. Apple used her version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in their 2013 Christmas commercial campaign. Furthermore, she has had numerous film roles. Chan also narrated the film Janis: Little Girl Blue which premiered at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. Track Listing The ex-love of my life - Cat Power Marshall has also had tragedy galore in her life. Before coming to prominence whilst working as a waitress in Atlanta her boyfriend died. Also at the time her best friend died of AIDS. This coupled with the abject use of heroin amongst her social circle led her to move to New York. She soon found a new boyfriend whom helped her to get a job as a waitress. Subsequently she discovered he was having an affair with the owner of the diner. A short relationship with model Daniel Currie ended in 2003 at a time when she was drinking heavily and abusing other substances. Three years later she started a relationship with actor Giovanni Ribisi. Consequently, she lived with him and his daughter in Los Angeles. They broke up in 2012. This break up coincided with the release of her ninth studio album Sun. In 2015 Cat Power gave birth to her first child but did not reveal the identity of the father. I cut my hair off three days [after the breakup], got on a plane to France, and finished the shit. Listener Suggestion of the Year - 2018 Loads of Listener Recommendations have come in throughout 2018 but one track stood out in particular. We wanted to recognise this and so have declared it our Listener Suggestion of the Year. Our New Year Special playlist contains our official Listener Suggestion of 2018 - Vagabond by Caamp - suggested by listener and man of significant musical taste, Duncan. Thanks for this wonderful suggestion Duncan, enjoy the distinguished award of being our Listener Suggestion of the Year! The playlist is broadcasting on 31/12/2018 at 09:00GMT. Keep 'em coming listeners! Listener Suggestions... We brought two incredible listener suggestions to you today. Jamie recommended Joe Purdy - Outlaws and Maddie came in with Viola Beach - Swings and Waterslides. Many thanks to those two for reaching out to us, we thrive on listener interaction. If you think you've got a track that would light up the show then please do get in touch. Joe Purdy - Kristine Joe Purdy is an American singer/songwriter who has recorded and released 14 albums over the last 15 years. Thanks to Jamie for recommending the track Outlaws. Record Box HQ has been exploring further songs of Joe Purdy's and has discovered this nugget - Kristine. In difference to Outlaws where Joe play the piano, this features him playing guitar. Joe plays both piano and guitar, along with harmonica, mandolin and banjo. If you too find Joe's subtle melodies and Americana themes alluring then you can find out much more about the man here. We are certainly looking forward to Joe touring the UK, although in all honesty we don't think he has any plans to do so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZHoitCyaRk

Most musicians can readily tell you about their influences, but the best musicians can tell you who it was that influenced their influences; they're always going a step farther back in time and they know full well that all of us here in the current age are standing on the shoulders of the shoulders of giants. The genre of classic rock casts a long shadow, and six decades on from Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and Elvis Presley, teenagers of the new millennium are just as apt to want a turntable and a laptop as an electric guitar, but many songs from the heyday of rock and roll have found a second life in video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero, as well as in beer commercials. Eli Wulfmeier grew up in Michigan, but he sounds like an apple that fell directly off the Allman Brothers' tree. On guitar, Wulfmeier's trick bag is full of tried and true rock and roll licks and he executes them with a smooth flair and tasteful approach that can at times lean toward the incendiary. Vocally, he shows an affinity for the amped up blue-eyed soul of the best legacy rock singers. After spending the last decade in California, honing his guitar chops by playing with the likes of Shelby Lynne, Joe Purdy, Leslie Stevens and Jonny Fritz, Wulfmeier has formed a new trio of his own to allow him to showcase his considerable talents as a songwriter, guitarist and singer. That trio, called Leroy From the North, has a style that is not quite jam band territory, but the three-piece format does allow him the flexibility to improvise and change arrangements on the fly. Wulfmeier hews close enough to the elemental building blocks of rock that his songs, singing and guitar playing sound comfortably familiar, and he's got enough talent in his approach that it still sounds fresh.

New music, a Trout Forest Music Festival preview, show previews, and a shoutout to A Man Named Wrycraft gets a little silly.

As usual tonight, we’ve got new music and upcoming shows to hype, but it isn’t every week that we’re joined by guests as lovely and talented as Andrea Romalo and Cindy Doire, otherwise known as Scarlett Jane. They’re in Manitoba for a Home Routes tour, and they kicked it all off with a visit to the studio for a chat and some live music!

This episode celebrates the 7th anniversary of this podcast, the first episode of which was published on Independence Day, July 4th of the year 2005. As you’d expect, my life is very different today than it was back then, in many ways better, in other ways…different; but I’m not complaining. This is Life 2.0; the world has moved on, and so have we all. One major point of improvement in my life is the many friends I have been so fortunate to make, as a direct result of this goofy little podcast. There have been days, sometimes weeks, where I haven’t felt like stepping up to the microphone. There have been days and weeks when I haven’t felt like running. The thing is; with your friendship, kindness and support: I’ve been inspired to run and motivated to podcast…to share with you my thoughts, opinions, observations and yes: even the tidbit details of my life; because when you run together you share something special…and even though this is a digital audio reproduction of my voice, somewhere in the world right now, some of our fellow runners are out on the road, getting their miles in and sharing the experience. Conversations, Meditations, and Explorations for and about runners. Phedippidations isn’t dead, but what it was seven years ago is but a ghost of what it has become. Thank you for running with me this far; but we’re not even half way there, and we have a long…long way to go. T-Bar’s got some ‘splainin’ to do since he posted his wacky Top 10 list on Steel Belted Radio.com, so we grill him on that and he plays a few to try to defend himself. Luckily, our special guests came in just in time to spare him. And what guests they are, Romi Mayes and Jason Nowicki dropped by in advance of their live album recording at the West End, to play us some new songs and talk about what’s going on.
