On July 9, 1973, 16-year old Paul Getty made plans to hang out with friends at a local pizzeria. During the early morning hours of July 10, 1973, Paul began making his way back to his apartment when a car pulled up alongside him. A man asked if he was Paul Getty, and when he said yes, Paul was pulled into the car and knocked out with chloroform. What Paul didn't know is that his kidnappers had a plan to extort his grandfather for $17M dollars in ransom. Only things didn't go as planned. Paul Getty's grandfather, John Paul Getty, Sr., was not only an oil tycoon and one of the richest men in the world, but he was very eccentric and a shrewd businessman. He flat out refused to pay the ransom until five months later, when Getty Sr. and the kidnappers finally reached an agreement. Not allowing anyone to have the last word, however, Getty made the exchange, but not without strings attached.Dying to be Found and Dying to be Found: The DASH are now part of Sound Slice Audio Productions! Jane Green joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about latest novel, Sister Stardust, her first book of biographical fiction. For years, Jane has been interested in Talitha Getty, the second wife of John Paul Getty. Sister Stardust reimagines the life of Talitha in the '60s during her time in Morocco. Talitha is a famous model and actress. She's rich, exuberant, and universally loved, embedded in a world of art and love. The story is told through the eyes of Claire, who moves from her English town to London, and she is swept up in Talitha's world. The closer they grow, the more Claire learns about the dark past of this mysterious and revered woman. Jane talks to Carol about British history that Americans may not be familiar with, and how that tied into Talitha Getty's life. They discuss research and the challenges in fictionalizing a star's life. Jane also talks about changes in life due to social media and what that means for her next project. German-born Gisela is also a photographer, film director, and author. She was part of the sixties and seventies bohemian milieu, mixing with the likes of Dennis Hopper, Hunter S. Thompson, Jack Nicholson, Leonard Cohen, and of course Timothy Leary, the controversial psychologist who researched LSD. But beyond all these job descriptions, Gisela is also a “lifelong seeker”. Gisela and her twin sister Jutta Winkelmann were highly involved in Germany’s “68 Movement”, but they always sought more, more than just belonging to a political movement. They wanted a meaningful life, rich with experience and trying everything that was available. Gisela then married John Paul Getty, they lived in California and they surrounded themselves with likeminded people who were also into new ideas and thinking about the world and humankind, which of course at that time, was heavily influenced by psychedelics. This meant that Gisela was around, when psychedelics became popularized in Western culture for the very first time, and also when the use of psychedelics was very much aligned with changing a whole society and the world.

THIS WEEK: Audy is back with two of his good friends and cinephiles Warren James, and Sean Lindenmuth. First, Audy and Warren review the Ridley Scott biopic/thriller All the Money in the World starring Christopher Plummer, Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg. Warren thought Christopher Plummer did a great job as Kevin Spacey's replacement as John Paul Getty but felt the movie could have been better in its screenplay. Audy commended Ridley Scott for making the decision to take Spacey out, replace him with Plummer, do re-shoots with the cast at the 11th hour, and still make a competent film but that is all that was positive with this serviceable, but unforgettable film. Next, Sean joins Warren and Audy to review the sci-fi/fantasy romance film The Shape of Water. Directed by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Sophie Hawkins and Doug Jones. Audy was immersed in the world and lauded all the technical aspects of the film, in particular Hawkins' performance, but felt the film played things too safe. Warren agreed, but felt that film did a great job of its 50's commentary on race, sexuality and paternalism and lauded Michael Shannon's performance. Sean respected the film, but felt the romance between its both leads were rushed, along with no seeming consequence of the character's actions within the plot along with the overall conceptual silliness of a woman and fishman falling in love.  All the Money in the World Audy - 2.5 out of 4 stars - "Hell No" Don't go see it! Warren - 2.5 out of stars - "Hell No" Don't go see it!!    The Shape of Water Audy - 3 out of 4 stars - "Hell Yeah" Go see it!  Elvin - 3 out of 4 stars -  "Hell Yeah" Go see it Sean - 2 out of 4 stars - "Hell No" Don't go see it!     Remember to listen, subscribe, rate, review and follow our guys on social media and iTunes, Soundcloud or Stitcher. Christopher Plummer discusses replacing Kevin Spacey as John Paul Getty in the Ridley Scott-directed All the Money in the World after Spacey was dropped from the film due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Film critic Larushka Ivan-Zadeh considers whether this bold move by the director pays off.As Saudi Arabia announces that it will reopen its cinema doors, we look at the arts scene in the country and ask if this reflects a more liberal attitude towards culture. BBC Arabic Correspondent Hanan Razek reports. The writer Helen Dunmore is the posthumous winner of the 2017 Costa Poetry Award for her collection Inside the Wave. Many of the poems are concerned with her illness and the knowledge of her approaching death but as her fellow writer and friend Louise Doughty explains they are uplifting, often joyous works.Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Sarah Johnson.

Via lliure - Il·lustres execrables
