In this episode of Blended, Kate Ferdinand is joined by co-hosts Cilla and Nathalie to dive deep into what really happens when kids are raised across two homes with different sets of rules.Cilla explains the real difference between co-parenting and parallel parenting, and why understanding the difference can save families a lot of conflict.Kate, Cilla, and Nathalie each open up about their own parenting styles, how they set rules, maintain structure, and handle boundaries in their homes. The trio also explore whether softer or stricter parenting styles actually get better reactions, and whether having different rules really confuses children long-term or if kids are more adaptable than we give them credit for. They also reflects on how children sometimes adapt their behaviour depending on which parent they're talking to and how kids can even learn to play parents off against each other when the rules aren't aligned .If you've ever struggled with mixed messages, different expectations, or feeling like you're parenting in two completely different worlds, this episode is a must-listen.Follow @blended on Instagram to share your story. This week's listener's dilemma asks: “Do I have to end my marriage if he won't accept my child?” — sparking a deep and emotional conversation about loyalty, love, and the hard choices many blended families face. The trio also tackle adult children moving back home, how it affects family dynamics, and what happens when one partner struggles with a stepchild returning to the household.Rio shares his honest take on fatherhood, why men sometimes struggle to express how they feel, and why “firsts” in blended families can hit differently for men.Follow @blended on Instagram to share your story. Kate reflects on her experience entering a blended family without children of her own and Nathalie opens up about her health journey and her decision around motherhood. They also explore how “ours babies” , a term used in the blended family space to describe a child shared by both partners, can impact identity, connection, and emotional roles for women who aren't biological mums.Follow @blended on Instagram to share your story. Blended is back—but with a difference. Kate Ferdinand is joined by her brand new co-hosts Priscilla Appeaning, stepmum and blended life coach, and Nathalie Holmes-Lewis, step-mum and businesswoman. This season, they plan to have more honest and deeper conversations that help blended families feel supported and understood.Introducing a new partner to your children is a significant and sometimes stressful moment in blended families. Hear from Kate, Priscilla, and Nathalie as they chat about the timing and challenges of this introduction. They address common worries, including fear, resistance from children or the opinions of ex-partners, and whether delaying the introduction is beneficial. We learn about the importance of making sure the children feel part of the conversation and how building the introduction slowly can benefit everyone. We also hear from a listener with a dilemma:“I've been seeing someone great for four months and I'm feeling ready to meet the kids. They're aged 7 and 11 but my ex says it's too soon and that I'm not thinking about the kids' feelings. Should my ex's opinion affect my timing or is this decision mine alone?”This sparks conversations around how to navigate the role of the ex-partner and how to keep the communication amicable. If you've ever felt unsure about the big introduction, this episode reminds you that there's no right or wrong way—just what works for your unique family. To become part of the Blended family, follow @blended on Instagram. On today's episode of The Therapy Crouch, Abbey and Pete sit down with their old pals Rio and Kate Ferdinand!Pete and Rio go way back, from their times playing football both with and against each other and it shows in this laugh a minute episode when the pair take a couple of trips down memory lane. In scenes reminiscent of an all star Mr and Mrs, the couples take on each other in a battle of the sexes where the girls try to guess what a Panenka is and why you wouldn't try it on Fergie time….but maybe your own. The pair, who have been suffering a few sleepless nights lately due to their new addition to the family also use their time on the Therapy Crouch couch to get some things off their chest with hilarious results. And on a more touching note, Rio opens up on the impact that his documentaries detailing bereavement and his and Kate's blended family have had not just on themselves but the wider public. We also hear from one of our listeners whose night out ended up on a bit of a bum note after enjoying one too many real ales at his village's local beer festival and Rio and Kate are on hand to dish out some well needed words of wisdom. Masih Alinejad, Iranian American journalist, women's rights campaigner and a Time Woman of the Year 2023, is an outspoken critic of the Iranian government. She joins Anita to talk about her fight for women's rights in Iran. ‘Just Saying' is a memoir by the bestselling author Malorie Blackman, former Children's Laureate, best known for her Noughts & Crosses series for young adults. Malorie received eighty-two rejection letters before she finally found a publisher. Seventy published books later it is no exaggeration to say that Malorie Blackman has changed the face of British literature forever. Malorie joins Nuala to discuss her life and works. 650 years ago a woman we only know as Julian of Norwich produced a book which challenged the ideas of the time about sin and suffering. It presented a radical vision of love and hope that “All Shall Be Well and All Shall Be Well and All Manner of Things Shall be Well”. We hear from a listener, Sophie, about the words that she turns to for motivation and encouragement. Blended families are created for all sorts of reasons. Because of break-ups or the death of a parent, through fostering or adoption. Kate Ferdinand, previously Kate Wright of The Only Way is Essex fame, married the former footballer Rio Ferdinand in 2019, four years after his first wife Rebecca and mother of their three children, had died. As a new step mum she struggled partly because she felt very alone and that no-one understood what she was going through. But there was also very little out there to help someone in her situation – the step-parenting parts of books and websites were tiny, she says. Kate has now written her own book - How to Build a Family. She joins Anita to discuss her experiences. Most of us are familiar with the story of Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl who wrote a diary while hiding from the Nazis with her family, in Amsterdam during the Second World War. You are probably less familiar with the name of the woman who agreed to keep them safe in those secret attic rooms. Miep Gies was Otto's secretary, and when they were eventually located and sent to their deaths, it was Miep who found Anne's diary and kept it. A new TV series tells the whole story from Miep's perspective, and she is played by the British actor Bel Powley. Bel joins Nuala to talk about playing an ordinary woman who displayed extraordinary courage. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Hanna Ward
In her latest stage role Dame Maureen Lipman plays Rose in a one-woman memory play with its Jewish heroine sitting Shiva – mourning for the many dead, and moving through Jewish twentieth century history. On stage alone for two hours, her performance has already sparked two sell out runs in London and Manchester, and now she's back in the West End for a month. Maureen joins Anita live in the Woman's Hour studio. Blended families are created for all sorts of reasons. Because of break-ups or the death of a parent, through fostering or adoption. Kate Ferdinand married the former footballer Rio Ferdinand in 2019, four years after his first wife Rebecca and mother of their three children, had died. Now Kate has written How to Build a Family, the book she wished she'd had when she started out being a step mum. Woman's Hour Power List Leader Rimla Akhtar joins Anita to talk about her ground-breaking work in the world of women's sport. She was ranked by Forbes and The Independent as one of the most powerful women in international sports, and was awarded an OBE in 2021 for her contribution to diversity and equality in sport. “I feel like I always kind of longed for that family set up and I've got it. But although I feel loved and and I love my family, I've also kind of fallen into being a stepmum where I also sometimes feel that it's not my family.” In this moving and revealing conversation Kate Ferdinand opens up on subjects that affect us all. This conversation explores: • How her childhood shaped her and in particular her relationship with her father • The complexities and joys of being a stepmother and we can have multiple loves all at the same time • How love for those that have died lives on in the family, becomes part of the family and needs to be integrated by those joining them • The difficulties of social media and why comparison is the direct route to misery • Her own experience of miscarriage and why she needed to be open about it • How she has had to learn that expressing difficult feelings can release her from old, hardwired patterns • The notion that love is the strongest medicine — Julia's Website: https://juliasamuel.co.uk/ Julia's Instagram: @juliasamuelmbe Grief Works app: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/grief-works-self-care-love/id1558867513 If you'd like to get in touch with the podcast team, please contact us on therapyworkspodcast@gmail.com.
