What if the way you see yourself is shaping the way you dance—and the way others experience you at the milonga?Tango isn't just about steps; it's about presence. And yet, so many dancers hesitate, shrink, or second-guess themselves because they don't feel they “look” the part. But does appearance really determine connection, or is something deeper at play?In this episode, I dive into the unspoken anxieties of body image in tango—how age, size, and self-perception shape our experience on the dance floor. I explore the invisible factors that make a dancer magnetic, the surprising ways confidence is built (or broken), and why the most unforgettable tandas have nothing to do with how you look in the mirror. If you've ever wondered whether you belong in tango the way you are, this one's for you. It's hard to be objective about your own dancing. That's where I come in. Send me your dance videos through IMSO Tango School Online, and I'll point out what's working (and what's not) with clear, constructive feedback.

Your face reveals the truth before your words do—Annie Särnblad unpacks how microexpressions expose deception and hidden emotions. Joining Dr. Z, she discusses the relationship between our facial expressions and emotional states, and offers insights that could change how you perceive everyday interactions. What are microexpressions, and why do they matter? Annie explains that they are involuntary movements that reveal genuine emotions, often before we're even aware of them. These universal signals can bridge gaps in understanding, but they also uncover uncomfortable truths, especially when dealing with deception or narcissistic personality disorder. Narcissists often mask their true feelings, yet their microexpressions can betray them. What does it mean when someone's face shows arousal or excitement at another's pain? Annie and Dr. Z explore how this subtle behavior reveals deeper emotional truths. By learning to recognize these cues, you can better navigate challenging relationships and detect dishonesty more effectively. This episode invites you to see the hidden stories written on the faces you encounter. Quotes “With a grown-up, you may be asking someone in front of you, ‘How are you feeling today?' And they go, ‘Great.' And they pucker their chin. Well, they're not really feeling great. That's their body leaking. The microexpression is a leakage of emotion.” (07:04 | Annie Särnblad) “When I see somebody actually showing arousal, joy, or getting a thrill, getting off on someone else's suffering, that to me is a red flag that there may be some psychopathy.” (41:43 | Annie Särnblad) “That intuition that we get, that feeling in our gut, like, ‘I don't like that person. I don't know what it is. I can't figure it out. They just creep me out.' What we're picking up on are microexpressions. Yes, and probably other things too, like smell, body language, tone of voice… I'm looking for the disconnect, where the facial expressions and the words aren't matching. If that's a consistent thing, this isn't good. This is a big red flag to stay away. And you're going to combine that with other pieces that just don't match.” (48:48 | Dr. Z & Annie Särnblad) Links Connect with Annie Särnblad: https://anniesarnblad.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/annie.sarnblad/ YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@anniesarnblad https://anniesarnblad.com/book/ Annie has a new online course, the Reading Humans Masterclass. Dr. Chris Mortensen, an experienced equine educator and researcher, takes listeners through the complexities and nuances of equine communication in this podcast episode of 'Mad About Horses'. He explores the fascinating research related to wild equines, specifically the Somali wild ass, and their means of communication including body language, olfactory responses, and signals encoded in gene expression. He branches over to domestic horses and how they too communicate. Dr. Mortensen further explains how horses can identify and respond to human emotions through vocal and physical expressions. He stresses the imperative need to understand horses' communication tactics, not only for constructive training but also to ensure their well-being. Dr. Mortensen concludes by emphasizing the importance of gentle touch and positive vocal interactions in our engagements with horses, which he supports with compelling scientific studies. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, Ph.D., a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University who is a world expert in the science of emotions. She explains what emotions are and how the brain represents and integrates signals from our body and the environment around us to create our unique emotional states. We discuss the relationship between emotions and language, how our specificity of language impacts our emotional processing, the role of facial expressions in emotions, and how emotions relate to sleep, movement, nutrition and the building and reinforcement of social bonds. We also discuss actionable tools for how to regulate feelings of uncertainty and tools to better understand the emotional states of others. This episode ought to be of interest to anyone curious about the neuroscience and psychology underlying emotions and for those who seek to better understand themselves and relate to others and the world in richer, more adaptive ways. In this episode, I describe how your brain and body are fundamentally wired to perceive and respond to music and how those responses can be leveraged to improve your mood, allow for processing sad emotions and enhance learning and performance throughout your lifespan. I explain the data on how music can increase motivation for cognitive or physical work, what music has been shown to enhance cognitive performance, and whether silence or music is more effective in enhancing focus while studying. I also discuss how specific music can rapidly reduce anxiety and certain prescription medications. I explain how listening to certain types of music can improve various health metrics (e.g., heart rate). Finally, I discuss how music helps to enhance neuroplasticity (rewiring of brain connections), thereby improving learning and memory. Whether you sing, play an instrument or enjoy listening to music, this episode provides numerous science-informed tools for using music to enhance productivity, mood, emotional states, and overall enjoyment of life. My guest is Eddie Chang, MD, a neurosurgeon and professor of neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the co-director of the Center for Neural Engineering & Prostheses. We discuss the brain mechanisms underlying speech, language learning and comprehension, communicating human emotion with words and hand gestures, bilingualism and language disorders, such as stuttering. Dr. Chang also explains his work developing and applying state-of-the-art technology to decode speech and using that information and artificial intelligence (AI) to successfully restore communication to patients who have suffered paralyzing injuries or “locked in syndrome.” We also discuss his work treating patients with epilepsy. Finally, we consider the future: how modern neuroscience is overturning textbook medical books, the impact of digital technology such as smartphones on language and the future of natural and computer-assisted human communication. My guest this episode is Dr. Erich Jarvis, PhD—Professor and the Head of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language at Rockefeller University and Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Dr. Jarvis' research spans the molecular and genetic mechanisms of vocal communication, comparative genomics of speech and language across species and the relationship between speech, language and movement. We discuss the unique ability of humans (and certain animal species) to learn and communicate using complex language, including verbal speech production and the ability to interpret both written and spoken language. We also discuss the connections between language, singing and dance and why song may have evolved before language. Dr. Jarvis also explains some of the underlying biological and genetic components of stutter/speech disorders, non-verbal communication, why it's easiest to learn a language as a child and how individuals can learn multiple languages at any age. This episode ought to be of interest to everyone interested in the origins of human speech, language, music and culture and how newer technology, such as social media and texting, change our brains.
