In this week's episode, I review the movies and streaming shows I saw in the second half of summer 2024. The episode concludes with a preview of the audiobook of HALF-ORC PALADIN, as excellently narrated by Leanne Woodward. TRANSCRIPT 00:00:00 Introduction and Writing Updates Hello, everyone. Welcome to Episode 218 of The Pulp Writer Show. My name is Jonathan Moeller. Today is September the 13th, 2024 and today we are discussing my Summer Movie Review Roundup, Part 2. Just to note to say that you may hear some odd background noises in this episode. My neighbor across the street is getting his roof replaced. I can't begrudge them that because no one likes a leaky roof, but it is slightly inconvenient because this is the only time today I have to record the podcast. So if you hear the occasional pop in the background, that is the sound of a nail gun driving shingles into a roof. Before we get to our main topics, let's have an update on my current writing projects and then we will do Question of the Week. First up, Shield of Conquest is very nearly done. I am about 2/3 of the way through the final round of editing and if all goes well, it should come out shortly after this episode is available, so be sure to check your favorite ebook retailer and see if it is out. Once that is done, I will be going full speed ahead on Ghost in the Tombs and I'm currently 48,000 words into that, so about halfway through the rough draft, give or take, depends on how long the rest of the book takes and how certain scenes in the final half of the book out. In audiobook news, Half-Orc Paladin is done, and it's now available on all the major audio stores: Audible, Amazon, Apple, Google Play, Chirp, Kobo, Payhip, Spotify, and a couple others, and you can get it there. We will close out this episode with a preview of Half-Orc Paladin (as excellently narrated by Leanne Woodward). 00:01:30 Question of the Week Now let's have a Question of the Week. Question of the Week is designed to inspire interesting discussions of enjoyable topics. This week's question: what is your favorite superhero movie? No wrong answers, of course (including “I don't like superhero movies”, but it turns out no one said that, so I guess superhero movies are quite popular). The inspiration for this question was that I was thinking about how superhero movies are such a major part of pop culture. Nowadays when people think of superhero movies, they usually think of Marvel and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there were major superhero movies before the whole Marvel Cinematic approach really got going in the 2000s/2010s and they've been obviously part of pop culture for a very long time, and as you could expect, we had a wide range of responses from this. Our first response was from JD, who says: If I had to pick just one, it would probably be Guardians of the Galaxy. The first film had a near perfect mix of action, drama, and comedy. For me, the best Batman film was the 1966 one starring Adam West. Joaquim says: In the last millennium, when I was a child, we had DC Comics and Marvel Comics. I did like Batman in DC, Spider-man and The Avengers in Marvel. In the movies, I did not particularly like Batman, but I like the early Marvel movies, Avengers 1 and Captain America 2 the most. Mary says: X-Men. Todd says: 1978 Superman. Visually at 15, I believed a man could fly. Juana says: My superhero is actually a couple - The Vision and Scarlet Witch (before they turned Vision into an emotionless thing a while back). What's interesting is that the guy who was in charge of Picard Season 3, which I quite liked, is apparently going to be running a Vision show for Marvel sometime in 2026 (assuming Disney doesn't run out of money first), so it should be interesting to see how it turns out. Stephen says: I know this is random- Shang Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings. I know it was not completely an original storyline, but I liked it a lot. I agree with Stephen. I thought Shang Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings was one of the stronger Marvel movies and it's too bad it hasn't had a sequel. Becca says: The Dark Knight trilogy. Those are the real Batman films for me. Ledger was certainly the best Joker. I do love the happier Batmans, too. I grew up on West's version of Batman. For me, V for Vendetta is my favorite superhero movie and one of my favorite movies ever. I usually watch it at least once a year. Michael says: Captain America: The First Avenger. Juliana says: Second Captain America. The spy aspect really married well with the superhero genre in this one. I agree with Juliana. I think Captain America: Winter Soldier is one of the better Marvel movies. Roger says: only because we're entering the season, The Christmas Chronicles with Kurt Russell. Andrew says: Deadpool and Wolverine, followed by The Dark Knight trilogy. James says: I know Fox's X-Men get a bad rap generally, but Days of Future Past was amazing. I'd have to go with that, with The Dark Knight, Thor: Ragnarok, and Wonder Woman as runner-ups. Cheryl says: don't really have favorites, but for eye candy, Thor. Catriona says: The original Christopher Reeve Superman. Jenny says: Mystery Men. Jeanne says: Megamind. Randy says: Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight movies are definitely in the top three but Iron Man has always been my favorite. Good story, good pacing, and Robert Downey Junior just nailed playing Tony Stark, in my opinion. Not to mention it kicked off the longest, largest, story movie arc to this day. BV says: Superman 1978. Terry says: Fifth Element. Gary says: Hancock. For myself, I think my favorite superhero movies would be the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale Dark Knight trilogy. Strong performances, great action, and they managed to do something very difficult, namely bring a satisfying end to a superhero story arc. It almost feels like The Dark Knight movies are the “real” events of Batman and all the other comics and cartoons and movies are legends and exaggerations after the fact, like how the whole glittering mythos of King Arthur and the Round Table developed around an obscure Roman British warlord in the 500s AD. Also, Heath Ledger's version of the Joker was amazing. That said, for Marvel movies, which have been kind of the dominant form of superhero movies for the last decade, I think the best one of those would be Captain America: Winter Soldier (in my opinion). 00:05:45 Main Topic: Summer 2024 Movie/TV Roundup, Part 2 And now on to our main topic of this episode, my Summer 2024 Movie Roundup, Part 2. And if this movie roundup has a theme, it's miscellaneous. The reason for that is I did not actually watch all that many movies in the second half of the summer. There was no nefarious reason for that. I was just busy with travel and busy with multiple instances of home repair and busy finishing Half-Orc Paladin and Shield of Conquest. So I mostly watched some older stuff that I found on streaming, especially on Tubi, which has the delightful attribute of being free with ads. As usual, the movies are listed from my least favorite to my most favorite and the grades are totally subjective and based upon my own thoughts and opinions and nothing more substantial than that. So with that in mind, let's start out. First up is The Burbs, which came out in 1989. It's a dark comedy/horror movie satire starring Tom Hanks as Ray, a suburban homeowner with a wife and a son. On vacation for the week, Ray becomes obsessed with the Klopeks, a new family that has moved on to his street. The Klopeks have no interest in maintaining their property and show signs of other odd activities: going out only at night, constant digging in the backyard, and strange noises and lights coming from their basement. Soon, Ray and his two neighbors become determined to find out just what the Klopeks are up to. It was darkly funny, though you could tell that the ending had been rewritten a few times. The movie couldn't decide if it wanted to be a satire of clannish homeowners or to totally validate their concerns, or both. I think it tried for both and couldn't quite get there. Though it does kind of show how much the United States has changed or possibly declined in the last 35 years. Ray and his friends are shown as kind of losers, but they live in enormous, well-maintained houses. It's like how Homer Simpson in the first couple seasons of The Simpsons was shown as a bumbling loser, but yet he could afford to live in a four bedroom house, his wife didn't work most of the time, they had two cars and three children, and all without Homer having a college degree. By the standards of 2024, Homer Simpson lived like a king. Amusing anecdote-one scene in The Burbs was clearly inspired by A Fistful of Dollars, which I talk about more below. Overall grade: C Next up is The Batman vs. Dracula, an animated movie which came out in 2005. In this movie, Batman goes up against Count Dracula. This was probably as dark and gory as something can be while still technically remaining targeted at children. When a robbery goes bad, the Penguin accidentally releases Count Dracula from his tomb and becomes the Vampire Lord's new chief servant. Dracula is fascinated by the modern world, but he's especially fascinated by Batman since for obvious reasons he admires Batman's bat-themed motif. Dracula offers Batman the chance to become his chief lieutenant, which Batman refuses and Dracula takes that personally. He'll get his revenge by turning Gotham City into a city of the undead and taking Bruce Wayne's girlfriend, Vicki Vale, as his new vampire bride. Unless, of course, Batman stops him. It was interesting how neatly Dracula slots into becoming a good enemy for Batman. After all, in the original Dracula novel, Dracula's nemesis Van Helsing was definitely a man of science who brought logic, reason, and scientific method to his fight against Dracula. Batman is also a man of science in the sense that he's a detective, so he does some detective work to unravel Dracula's weaknesses and to build weapons to use against him. Overall Grade: B Next up is Set It Up, which came out in 2018. This is a romantic comedy that reminded me a bit of the more cynical 1940s-era romcoms like The Shop Around the Corner. The female lead Harper works as a personal assistant for a workaholic female sports writer who terrorizes her employees. The male lead Charlie works for workaholic male venture capitalist who also terrorizes his employees. Both their bosses are miserable, demanding people who make everyone around them unhappy. One day, both Charlie and Harper are dispatched to get dinner for their bosses and end up fighting over the last available delivery man. However, in the wake of the encounter, Harper hatches a plan. Both she and Charlie know everything about their respective bosses, so why not manipulate their calendars and schedules so they fall in love? They might be more cheerful, or at the very least they'll be in the office less frequently. Charlie has his misgivings about this plan, but after one more unfortunate encounter with his boss, decides to embark upon Harper's plan. Of course, Charlie has a high maintenance girlfriend who wants him to make a lot more money, and Harper is trying to find a boyfriend, but as per the rules of romcoms, perhaps Charlie and Harper will have more in common than they might think. This had a bit more crude humor than I might prefer but was still enjoyable. It did remind me quite a bit of the more cynical ‘30s and ‘40s movies like My Man Godfrey or the Shop around the Corner. Overall Grade: B Next up is The Bank of Dave, which came out in 2023. This is basically the cynical British version of a Hallmark movie, but with better production values. It is very, very loosely based on the activities of Dave Fishwick, a successful van dealer in the north of England who decides to start a local bank for local people, feeling that the Big London banks have lost sight of that. To do that, he recruits a London lawyer named Hugh to help him navigate a labyrinth of regulation around financial institutions. Of course the big banks dislike this idea and come after Dave hard. Dave is definitely the local Big Man, and it's interesting that humanity's default mode of government seems to be Local Big Man. However, if one must have a Big Man, one could only hope he is as benevolent as Dave. The movie was pretty funny, though a lot of the humor comes from the UK's class and regional divides, which are rather more pronounced than in the United States. Here in the United States, you can drive for 300 miles and be in the same state the entire time, and the local culture won't change all that much. The cliche is that the US East Coast and the US West Coast look down upon flyover country, but you can drive something like 1,000 miles from New York before you even get to Flyover Country. If you drive 300 miles in the UK, you've probably gone through six or seven regional accents and local traditions. The Bank of Dave does kind of turn into a Hallmark movie since Hugh falls for David's doctor niece. So basically a romance with the backdrop of British class/regional struggle as comedy. Overall grade: B Next up is Cool Runnings, which came out in 1993. A sports comedy film very (and I mean very loosely) based on the debut of the Jamaican Olympic bobsled team in the 1988 Winter Olympics. When sprinter Derice Bannock is unable to qualify for the Jamaican Olympic team due to an accident, he decides to instead to start a bobsled team to represent Jamaica in the Games. To do this, he recruits washed up former bobsledder Blitzer (played by John Candy) to act as the team's coach. What follows is a pretty good example of a sports movie. The team must come together and perform while overcoming their own personal challenges and inner conflicts, especially Coach Blitzer, who has to dig deep and overcome his past to effectively coach the team. It's interesting that sports movies tend to follow one of two trajectories. Either the team rallies and wins the championship, or they don't win the championship and nonetheless achieve moral victory by overcoming their internal difficulties in learning to work together. I won't spoil which path Cool Runnings follows. Overall Grade: B Next up is Uncle Buck, which came out in 1989. This is a coming-of-age comedy film about a 40 year old man, oddly enough. I did think this was pretty funny. Bob and Cindy are a married couple with three children living in the suburbs of Chicago, and when Cindy's father has a heart attack, they need to rush to his side. Due to the unexpected nature of the news, they have to find someone to watch the kids while they're gone. In desperation, they turned to Bob's brother Buck, who alternates between working for his girlfriend at her tire company and making money on rigged horse races. While Buck is kind of a loser, he's basically a decent guy, just averse to responsibility and settling down. He quickly steps up to take care of the children, though he conflicts with the oldest daughter Tia, who is in the grips of a full-blown adolescent rebellion. Buck soon realizes that he's come to a crossroads in his life, which is reinforced when Tia runs away to a party for the weekend. Slightly dark in places, but definitely more family friendly than many ‘80s comedies. Overall Grade: B+ Next up is the Adjustment Bureau, which came out in 2011. It is a science fiction romantic thriller based on the Philip K. Dick story, which is a very odd sentence to say, but it's true. Matt Damon plays David Norris, a congressman from New York who just lost the Senate race. Preparing for his concession speech. He meets Elise (played by Emily Blunt) and is immediately smitten with her. A month later, he runs into her by accident on a bus and receives her phone number. However, soon mysterious suited men with unusual powers arrive and burn the paper with the phone number. The men explain to David that they are The Adjustment Bureau, charged with making sure history unfolds according to the mysterious Plan. The Plan says that David can never see Elise again. David of course is not the sort of guy to take that lying down, so he soon finds himself trying to outwit the Time Cops and find Elise. It was interesting that The Adjustment Bureau was very similar to the Time Variance Authority from the Marvel Loki show, so I wonder if they drew on some of the same sources of inspiration. An interesting movie and worth watching. It actually wrestled with the oldest philosophical question in Western civilization: are all things predestined or do we have free will? Or is it somehow both? I have to admit that the scene where Elise dunked David's BlackBerry in coffee was very satisfying to me personally, since I had a lot of support headaches with Blackberries back in the 2000s. Overall Grade: B+ Now, finally the favorite thing I saw in the second half of the summer 2024: A Fistful of Dollars, which came out in 1964. This was the first Spaghetti Western I've seen, which means it's Italian director Sergio Leone's sort of stylized version of what the Old West was like. Of course, the movie actually ripped off the Akira Kurosawa samurai movie Yojimbo. In fact, it was so heavily ripped off Yojimbo that Kurosawa sued, settled out of court, and received 15% of A Fistful of Dollars' revenue. Apparently Kurosawa made more from the settlement than he did from Yojimbo. Legal troubles aside, it was quite good and I could see how it heavily influenced many subsequent movies. For example, the Star Wars character of Boba Fett was inspired by A Fistful of Dollars and Boba Fett in turn inspired the Mandalorian. Stephen King's rather disappointing Dark Tower series was inspired by Dollars as well. And there are many other examples, such as the scene in The Burbs I had mentioned above earlier. Anyway, Clint Eastwood plays The Stranger, a mercenary gunslinger who seems to be drifting from town to town without a purpose. He arrives at San Miguel, a US-Mexican border town that is dominated by two crime families at each other's throats, the Rojos and the Baxters. Both clans seek to hire The Stranger for their organizations and the gunslinger begins playing them off each other for personal profit. As mercenary and as ruthless as he is, The Stranger seems to have a core of honor to him. A couple of times he goes out of his way to help people because he can, which sometimes gets him into trouble. Definitely worth watching as a classic film. Overall Grade: A So that's it for this week. Thanks for listening to The Pulp Writer Show. I hope you found the show useful. This time on the Couch: Mike, James, and Shée tally up Bruce Wayne's body count with Batman no. 208! Who is the most important woman in Batman's life? Is it Poison Ivy? Catwoman? A random old woman we've never heard of before who will play almost no part in the Bat mythos going forward? Here's a hint: It's the stupidest option. Along the way, revisit Catwoman's petty revenge, Vicki Vale's bizarre antagonism, and Batgirl's sordid history with... Killer Moth. So Batman gets the Joker and Batgirl gets a dude in a bug helmet. And they say the patriarchy isn't real!

34 years ago, today, the first blockbuster, superhero film released to theaters, Batman. Starring Michael Keaton as Batman, Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, and Jack Nicholson as the Joker and directed by Tim Burton, the film was an instant hit and caused "Batmania" nation-wide. In 2023, Michael Keaton returns to the role for The Flash. And with Jason greatly anticipating what that movie could possibly be, he and Ashley decided to go back to where it all started for this week's episode of the Once Again Podcast. Can the movie that lead to the modern superhero movie hold up nearly 40 years later? Find out what we think in this special episode.

Sean Young looked poised to be a star in the 1980s. She appeared in Stripes, she was the love interest in Blade Runner—instantly achieving icon status—and she was great in thriller No Way Out. Then she got cast as Vicki Vale in Batman. That should have brought her career to the next level. Instead, it was the beginning of the end. Years of addressing bad behavior and refusing to flatter male egos had set the stage for Sean Young to be made a Hollywood pariah. And the match that set off that fuse? He refusal to accept that Batman Returns director Tim Burton wouldn't even see her for the role of Catwoman after she was forced to drop out of Batman due to a fractured arm. Mark Peikert walks us through the no-nonsense behavior that primed Hollywood to gleefully take down a woman who refused to play the game, leaving us to wonder what could have been for Sean Young. Some say they can't be killed. Some say they drink blood. Others simply say they are psychotic vigilantes…watchful protectors over the best and worst of retro action cinema. We are THE LAST ACTION HEROES and this episode we're suiting up to stalk the shadowy, crime ridden streets of Gotham in Tim Burton's 1989 franchise maker BATMAN!! Orphaned at an early age, lonesome brooding billionaire Bruce Wayne now stalks the twilight cityscape of Gotham as caped crime fighter Batman, sowing the seeds of fear and justice against the criminal underworld. However, with journalists Vicki Vale and Alexander Knox on his tail and following a fateful encounter at Axis Chemicals one night, the Bats legend is about to become reality with the emergence of a new type of villain with a taste for the theatrical: The Joker! What follows is a bat-shit (excuse the pun) crazy and insanely fun comic book romp that would set the template for action hero cinema for years to come and make a visionary young director every bit a household name as his pop culture creations. With truly excellent, trauma ridden lead performances from Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, a uniquely dark and oppressive take on Gotham and a questionably upbeat, New Wave soundtrack from none other than Prince, join BJORN-man, A-LEONfred, Harvey DANt and JESPER aka: ‘Bob the Goon' as they take on the film that singlehandedly kicked every other 80s era action hero square in the bollocks! Have you ever danced with some podcasters in the pale moonlight? Well, now you can, as Natalie, Stu and guest Scott Driscoll throw themselves into the weird twisted parade that is 1989's Batman. Stu takes us through the pop culture moment that this film created; while Nat gets into a shame spiral about Vicki Vale's alleged weight. Stu and Scott discuss why Batman is a great film, but not the best Batman film. NOTE: Natalie's audio is slightly muffled in the first half of this podcast, due to not realising she was being recorded on her AirPod microphone. Around half way through we had technical difficulties and lost Stu, so there is a sharp cut. However after that Natalie realised her mic situation and switched back to her proper mic and the audio is much better!
Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom are back with another week of DC Comics. It's a pretty solid wee , but with so many books, the guys are dividing it up into two episodes and here is the part 2! Detective Comics #1042 - We've reached the end of the Hue Vile saga as that villain meets his ultimate fate, but like anything in Gotham, we aren't sure we've seen the last of him. Also while this is a satisfying conclusion and certainly does a great job leading into Fear State, where the story really shines is in the humor and quieter moments writer Mariko Tamaki brings to the story. The back-up story, Task Force Z is always a pleasure to read. Writer Matthew Rosenberg is quickly becoming Jace's favorite when it comes to dialogue and both the guys really enjoy the characterization of Deb Donovan and the interesting contrasts that exists between her and Vicki Vale. Writers - Mariko Tamaki & Matthew Rosenberg, Artists - Viktor Bogdanovic, Daniel Henriques & Max Raynor, Color Artists - Jordie Bellaire & Diego Rodriguez, Letterer - Aditya Bidikar & Rob Leigh Icon & Rocket Season 1 #2 - The best thing about a comic when it gets into accurately portraying social issues is for it to feel natural and that is exactly what we see in this issue. As the background of Augustus Freeman is explored and we see the consequences of his actions as Icon affect his present, the subtext of his agency as a person of color is always there. As we are introduced to a potential powerful new threat to Icon and Rocket, the subtext is there. It's fantastic storytelling that makes this story so relevant and grounds it in a realism for present day issues. Plus the artwork is FANTASTIC. Writer - Reginald Hudlin, Penciller - Doug Braithwaite, Inker - Andrew Currie, Color Artist - Brad Anderson, Letterer - Andworld Design Superman Son of Kal-El #2 - Jon Kent attempts to re-establish a secret identity but it falls apart quickly. That leads him to have a very serious conversation with his father about there respective rolls as earth's protectors. What is interesting is how Kal-El sees Jon's role as different than his own, but how does Jon see it and how will the events of this issue affect him going forward. Writer - Tom Taylor, Artist - John Timms, Color Artist - Gabe Eltaeb, Letterer - Dave Sharpe Superman vs Lobo #1 - Lobo takes offense when Superman swoops in and not only helps him save people at an interstellar resort, but gets all the credit for the rescue while Lobo doesn't even get mentioned. This leads the Main Man to come to earth where he plots a rather sophisticated and very meta revenge by attacking Superman on Lex Luthor's recently released social media platform Lexer. It's wild times on this Black Label title. Wonder Woman Black and Gold #3 - Some great stories celebrating Wonder Woman and her different roles throughout her history. A particular highlight is the ESPIONAGE story which hearkens back to the Mike Sekowsky error of Wonder Woman when she was much more spy, than superhero. Writers - Janet Harvey, Robert Venditti, Paula Sevenbergen, Nnedi Okorafor & Aimee Garcia, Artists - Megan Levens, Steve Epting, Inaki Miranda, Jack T. Cole & Sebastian Fiumara, Color Artist - Eva De La Cruz, Letterer - Becca Carey, Andworld Design, Pat Brosseau & Rob Leigh Robin #5 - We see the Bat-family confront Damian about his recent disappearance and what he's been doing while out on his own. There is an especially heartfelt moment between the first Robin, Dick Grayson and the last, Damian himself. How will this affect Damian as the League of Lazarus tournament finally gets underway? Also what is the mysterious book Mother Soul has given so much to acquire? Writer - Joshua Williamson, Artist - Gleb Melnikov, Color Artist - Luis Guerrero, Letterer - Troy Peteri Wonder Woman #778 - The journey continues for Wonder Woman and Siegfried as they travel through both the Phantom Zone & the Fifth Dimension. The guys feel like this story may be starting to drag a little and Janus herself, as an antagonist, may be a little too derivative. If this story sticks the landing maybe all will be forgiven? Writers - Michael W Conrad, Becky Cloonan & Jordie Bellaire, Artists - Travis Moore & Paulina Ganucheau, Color Artists - Tamra Bonvillain & Kendall Goode, Letterer - Pat Brosseau & Becca Carey

Zach & Zo finally go on a roadtrip to one of the most corrupt cities in America: Gotham City as imagined from the mind of Tim Burton. They investigate sightings of a mysterious figure in the Gotham underworld. A man with enormous strength and seemingly impenetrable skin. Most importantly, rumors say that he glides around the city with wings of a giant bat. Also threatening the city is a mob boss who dresses in clown make up murdering people on a whim in broad day light. Zach & Zo talk about what the citizens can do when faced with such ignominious figures. www.backlookcinema.comEmail: fanmail@backlookcinema.comTwitter: @backlookcinemaFacebook: The Back Look Cinema Podcast Instagram: backlookcinemapodcastThe song "It Takes One" by Jes Smith provided by Zapsplat.com
In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films and the first film that he remembers seeing in a cinema as a child: the 1989 film "Batman" directed by Tim Burton. Based upon the DC Comics character of the same name, "Batman" redefined not only the superhero genre of films but its depiction of the "Dark Knight" refined how people interpreted who the character is and it also examined the tragic psychological burdens that he daily suffers with which compel the character of Bruce Wayne/Batman to continuously decide to don the cowl and become a crime fighter and a symbol of justice within the occasionally uncivilised city of Gotham City. The film stars Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Kim Bassinger as Vicki Vale, Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth, Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent, as well as several other great actors in memorable roles. "Batman", like "Superman: The Movie" before it, changed how audiences saw superheroes and revitalized the potential of superhero movies with its relative realistic depiction of extreme characters, places, and situations mixed with thought-provoking storytelling, that would come to revitalize and inspire an entire generation to once again become enthralled by the character of the "Batman". --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

For Sarah and Raf, a certain 1989 marketing juggernaut changed the way they saw movies forever...and thinking about it drives them both a bit batty. In this podcast double feature, the hosts tackle Tim Burton's toxic-candy-colored "Batman" (1989) and the much-maligned "Batman Returns" (1992). Raf discusses how "Batman" laid the groundwork for modern-day comic book movies and ushered in the era of affordable VHS tapes. Sarah, meanwhile, notes that the film's kid-focused marketing and gritty embittered tone make it feel like "an angry divorced dad," though she stans Vicki Vale's bizarre fashion choices. But both hosts are here for "Batman Returns," the film that pushed Burton away from the franchise but won over Sarah and Raf's cine-manic hearts. They'll discuss whether Michelle Pfeiffer's Selina Kyle is actually a good guy, how Max Shreck is Peak Walken, how Bruce Wayne could've been the Penguin (or Shreck) in a different life, whether Batman and Catwoman could've made it work — and, most importantly, how this dark film about murder and corruption is really a Christmas movie. Just like "Die Hard."
In 1989, Danny Elfman redefined the sound of superheroes on the silver screen. His theme for the Batman is explored, as well as his musical treatment of the Joker and Vicki Vale. Prince's music is also discussed, and we break down Elfman's use of rhythm, themes, and textures. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

Thirty years ago, Batman swept into movie theaters, ushering in the modern era of comic book movie-making. Directed by Tim Burton, starring Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, and Michael Keaton as the man who launched fifty thousand letters protesting his casting as Bruce Wayne. Despite a troubled production which saw a writer’s strike, budget overruns, stolen film reels, and intense skepticism of the film’s tone and direction, Batman became the biggest movie of the year and fifth highest-grossing film of all time by the end of its run. Batman became one of the biggest movie franchises of the ‘90s, with another film by Burton and Keaton, and two more directed by Joel Schumacher with Val Kilmer and George Clooney taking turns in the Batsuit. But thirty years later, after Christopher Nolan’s super-successful trilogy with Christian Bale, Ben Affleck’s less-successful turn, and the casting of Robert Pattinson as The Batman in Matt Reeves upcoming film, does this version still light up our Batsignal? Or is the joke on us? Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! These discussions will be spoiler filled and may explicit language, so consider yourself warned. Batman #163 (1964)Its two Silver Age Batman stories in one book….aren’t we blessed? In the first story, Alfred writes some fanfic (for real) that imagines Dick-Batman and Robin Jr. Jr. teaming up with Batwoman II on Earth-40 to face a mad scientist that failed engineering hard and made a fist-ship that should never fly. Thankfully, 100 lb Batwoman II is a kayfabe linebacker and can tackle steel machines into mobsters with ease.In the second story, Joker puts Batman on trial for not allowing crime to happen. Batman cosplays Robin as a smallpox sufferer and go on to thwart Joker’s chances at winning a tour of the Batcave like he’s Vicki Vale or something.Email the podcast at worstcollectionever@gmail.comContinue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter @angryheroshawn and @JenStansfield

From shark repellent to awful misogyny, Andy and Tony explore Gotham city through the lens of two films with the same name and very different themes. Important questions: Has Adam West been to space? How many war crimes had Batman committed? Can Tim Burton make a good female character? Keep an ear out for us forgetting we're doing a Halloween episode for most of the actual podcast. Important questions: Is Seymour a sociopath? Is Audrey better with no character, or a very problematic one? WHO WILL DIE IN THESE MOVIES!?!? A Dame to Kill For’ (2014). On this month's manga episode, Shea and Derek discuss two distinctly different titles. They begin with Batman: The Jiro Kuwata Batmanga (DC Comics). The second in this planned three-volume series, collecting all of Kuwata's Batman work, just came out last month, and the Two Guys look at both volumes one and two. These Batmanga stories were originally serialized in Japan between 1966 and 1967, at the height of the Adam West Batman craze, and both Derek and Shea comment on how much Kuwata's stories were informed by that TV series, as well as by the "New Look" of earlier in the decade. At the same time, this manga never comes across as intentionally campy or self-conscious of itself as a pop-cultural product. In fact, one of the guys' first topics of conversation is how much Kuwata's Batman takes from its American version and how much is unique and original to the manga. Surprisingly, there are relatively few American imports into the Batmanga stories -- Jim Gordon is prominent throughout, and both Alfred Pennyworth and Vicki Vale make brief appearances -- and the villains in Kuwata's stories are either street-level thugs or unique to the manga. Indeed, Derek comments on the weirdness of many of Batman's nemeses in these stories -- at least, more weirdly off-beat than those in the American version -- including Lord Death Man, the Human Ball, Professor Gorilla, the Hangman, and, one of his favorites, Go-Go the Magician. (Clayface is the focus of a chapter in the second volume, but it's a different Clayface from the American version.) These are definitely stories of their time, and the guys point out that Kuwata's Batmanga is perhaps best read as a rich cultural artifact. To fully appreciate Batman, you should understand the property's many historical contexts and manifestations. Next, the guys look at the the first volume in Dark Horse Comics' new Oh My Goddess! Omnibus series. Neither Shea nor Derek knew exactly what to expect with Kosuke Fujishima legendary title, except for the fact that it was a widely popular manga series. Derek expected something along the line of josei, and Shea thought that the title might be defined by several of the stereotypes many readers may have regarding manga. But both were pleasantly surprised, especially Derek, who appreciated the episodic, TV-sitcom-like nature of this seinen manga. In fact, as the guys point out, you can gain about everything you need to now about the series' premise in the book's first chapter, "The Number You Have Dailed Is Incorrect." From there, the remaining 22 chapters of this first omnibus follow suit, occasionally introducing new characters and situations that build upon the foundation laid down in the first. Shea is less impressed by Fujishima's meandering storylines, but Derek enjoys the casual, even charming, manner in which we get to know Keiichi, Belldandy, and the rest of the Oh My Goddess! cast. The reader's comfort and enjoyment levels develop as the series unfolds, and, as Shea points out, taking in a chapter of Oh My Goddess! is like eating a favorite food or returning to a reliable friend. However, for some (such as Shea) this is a title that might be best experienced on a regular serialized basis, and not consumed all at once in omnibus form. Regardless, both of the guys are glad that they've discovered Fujishima's recently completed series -- the final chapter was published in April 2014 -- and they'll probably return for the next omnibus volume that comes out late this year.

Episode 2 of Unseen Footage! Claire's seen the Nolan trilogy of Batman films, but not the 1989 Burton classic that started the entire comic book movie movement. We discuss this Batman, both of our larger theories on Bruce Wayne as a character, Joker as a villain, Kim Basinger's Vicki Vale as a powerless female character, and just exactly who is Michael Keaton?
