For millions of freelance workers in the gig economy, delayed and even stolen wages are a routine hardship that leave many scrambling to make ends meet. More than half of all freelance workers have experienced wage theft at least once in their careers, and the majority find little protection or means of recompense from the government. That's where new "Freelance Isn't Free" laws come in to protect freelance workers from nonpayment. First passed in New York City in 2017, Freelance Isn't Free legislation has helped freelancers recoup hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid invoices over the last 7 years. Now, backed by organizers at the National Writers' Union and the Freelance Solidarity Project, local and state governments are looking to enact their own Freelance Isn't Free laws. The Real News speaks with Eric Thurm of the National Writers Union and the Freelance Solidarity Project, along with Keisha "TK" Dutes of the Association of Independents in Radio.Post-Production: Alina NehlichHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-real-news-podcast--2952221/support.

Shalita Grant from Netflix's "You" and TK Dutes visit friends and discuss natural hair freedom, how to treat 4C Hair with Four Natural Hair Care, the CROWN Act and more with host Marina Franklin. Shalita Grant, a Tony-nominated actress, made headlines when she courageously left a popular TV show due to her struggle with traction alopecia and hair damage, which affected her in front of millions of viewers. Determined to find a solution, she developed a groundbreaking plant-based hair treatment that addressed her own complex type 4 hair issues. This led her to establish Four Naturals Hair in her dining room in Toluca Lake, California in 2019, which has now expanded into a nationwide salon and home care treatment system. With its plant-based active ingredients, the Four Naturals Treatment has become a transformative solution for textured hair, allowing Shalita's characters to look their best. Through her brand, she has empowered her clients, lovingly called Curlfriends, to experience newfound freedom and confidence with their type 4 hair, whether on vacation or in their daily lives. Shalita's commitment to healing and uplifting Black women has also extended to developing a patent-pending textured hair detangling technique that brings pain-free and stress-free experiences to both mothers and their children. Despite her own hair struggles, Shalita chose to rise above and make a positive impact in the industry, while finding joy in her personal life with her partner, former MMA World Champion Jessica Aguilar, and their three dogs in Puebla, Mexico. Keisha (TK) Dutes is an audio producer and the co-host of the new podcast, Open World. To offer your own advice, call Zak @ 844-935-BEST TRANSCRIPT: ZAK: We're home. We're probably not going anywhere anytime soon. And so today's advice inspires you to make your place as cozy and fun as possible without breaking the bank. KEISHA: Hi, I'm Keisha TK Dutes. I'm an audio producer and with my home space, I like to make different rooms so that I can go from room to room and have a different experience everyday. My bedroom is peaceful, I got plants. Then the bathroom is like a black aunty jungle. Cause I know that's where I do my thing. And I get ready for the morning and if I have to stare at myself I want to see jungle wallpaper behind me. You know? hahaha. And the living room is like an abstract-modern thing and that's just cause over time I would buy little things from like vintage stores or through traveling and even if I didn't have like a proper place to stay, I had like a box somewhere with these little things. ZAK: Some of us are living in houses that we haven't put a lot of time into designing just cause, like, you know, we got work, we got family, we got all this stuff to do. But now we might have some time to think about and organize our space. Do you have some advice about getting started? KEISHA: Yes, go through the stuff that you have already. You have so much... I think a lot of people pack away their lives but I went through like, pieces of paper...there's always a bag of envelopes somewhere. Right? Go through that bag of envelopes. Go through that bag of cards. Some of the cards will look nice enough to like, just tack up on the wall or put in a frame. There will be photos that you forgot. Put them on the fridge. Like little stuff. The fridge can be the jumping off point for like...ok, cool...I really like the colors in that photo. Boom, lemme paint my cupboards. You know, like, find your stuff first then start branching out. Going through my stuff and finding things over time it helped me to buy less things. ZAK: You might be searching for something to listen to while you're redesigning your place. If so, check out TK's new project. It's called Open World. It's a fiction anthology podcast about how science and technology serve as a backdrop for imaging a better future. It's really cool. You've been listening to The Best Advice Show. If you have some advice I would love to hear it. Give me a call on the hotline at 844-935-BEST.

According to Kim Williams, it takes real grit to be in the design field. She serves as the group manager for the UX core team at Indeed, where she leads a interdisciplinary team of designers, technologists, writers, and researchers working across the globe. We talked a lot about design leadership -- what it takes to not only build and lead a team, but also how to enable them to do their best work and make sure they have what they need to succeed. From there, Kim shared her journey as a designer, starting from her humble roots growing up in Jamaica to leading design efforts at Ogilvy & Mather, eBay, and now her time at Indeed. It's important as a designer of color in this field that we own our narrative, and Kim's definitely someone who is doing that! Get inspired from listening to her story today! Raking in over $400 million in its opening weekend, Black Panther has broken almost all box office records. But what does that mean for Black Brooklynites, the media they make and the legacy we leave? We discuss Marvel’s Black Panther with film and television producer, Okema T. Moore and Curtis Caesar John, Director of The Luminal Theater, a micro cinema specializing the curation of Black Film. Our engineer, Keisha “TK” Dutes, joins us as interim co-host alongside Mark Winston Griffith. Segment One: Mark and TK talk to Okema and Curtis about the themes, feelings, and critiques that Black Panther brought up within the community. Also, find out the difference between the Black movie theater experience and the White movie theater experience. Segment Two: Curtis John breaks down what makes a film a Black film; and we wonder how does this Black Panther’s success influences the future of Black film. Okema T. Moore schools us on some Black films and web series you should be in the know about. Segment Three: "Tell 'Em Why You Mad" Episode Music: Klaue/Wakanda Trailer, Black Panther 2018 “Warrior Falls” (Black Panther Score), Ludwig Goransson “Pray For Me”, (Black Panther Soundtrack) The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar “Killmonger’s Challenge” (Black Panther Score), Ludwig Goransson Intro and Outro theme Music: “City Survival” by MC K-Swift featuring TreZure Empire.
Black History Month 2018 was one for the books. We saw millions of fans celebrate #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay on Superbowl Sunday, Sade announce her first musical release in seven years for the Ava Duvernay-directed A Wrinkle In Time, the Obama presidential portraits unveiled, and The Golden State Warriors opt out of the traditional White House visit to instead take a group of students to the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture. We even saw a Black Lives Matter flag raised over a high school in Vermont, and of course Black Panther burn up the box office, smashing records along the way. We spent the month honoring the past, present, and future of Blackness in Brooklyn. We got a lesson on jazz great Betty Carter’s legacy from some of her contemporaries and closest friends. We joined a book club that celebrates black literature and womanhood. And we followed a group of students from Brooklyn all the way to Wakanda. #BlackHistory, #BlackFuture, #BlackExcellence. Say it loud in Brooklyn, USA. ••• Brooklyn, USA is produced by Sachar Mathias and Emily Boghossian.
