Mitch has been making powerful images for more than 50 years and has seen the industry change immensely over that time. And he has stayed at the forefront as the photography business has evolved, always on the cusp of technology advances. In this episode, he shows off one of his first large format Polaroid cameras and we discuss one of the more powerful, heavy images you'll ever see. He captured it one night was chasing news in Montgomery, AL in the early 1970's which was a very racially charged, contentious time. Unfortunately very similar to today's society. We also visit about an image that any waterfowler can relate with. And this spurred discussion about how his move in the 1980's to freelancing allowed the perfect confluence of his life's passions...storytelling and the outdoors.

Why are some topics too “taboo” to talk about? Did you know, One in four women over the age of 18 experience episodes of leaking urine involuntarily? Or that one-third of women experience pain during sex? Those two things alone can impact not only your health and fitness but also your mental health, confidence, self-esteem, and quality of living. If we created more awareness around topics such as these, more people would realize that there is a cure and a way to live life free of pain and discomfort. On this episode of the Fall In Love with Fitness podcast, Amadea and I discuss why she loves helping women who experience pain during sex, how she became an expert in the pelvic floor, and why we should create awareness around pelvic issues.

Today’s podcast features personal trainer, massage therapist and musician, Charlie Reid. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area for 8 years of my life brought with it the opportunity to meet and learn from many wonderful and knowledgeable coaches and trainers.  One of those that I met was Charlie, who I met at Pat Davidson’s “Rethinking the Big Patterns” seminar. Charlie and I later were able to both spend time at Kezar stadium learning sprint and movement philosophy from Adarian Barr, while having plenty of conversations on training. Charlie is one of the smartest and wisest coaches that you may not know.  His base of knowledge is massive, as well as the range of those coaches and systems he has spent time learning from.  If there is a system of thought out there in the world of movement and human performance, there is a good chance Charlie has experience with it.  Charlie is not only a strength coach, but also a certified massage practitioner, and spent years as a professional musician. On the podcast today, Charlie helps us “zoom out” our views on things like stretching, corrective exercise and motor learning.  At the core of our chat today is an extended discussion on the redundancy of the term “corrective exercise” and how to look at the body in a manner that leaves us wondering what truly needs to be corrected.  We also get into a learner-centered approach, and how facilitating that approach may differ from working from novices, up to more advanced athletes. And in the sense that you could relate it to just things that perhaps we do in the gym or in rehab or quote-unquote corrective type work. Charlie Reid: Yeah. I mean, a little bit of backstory. I toyed around with some meditation things and I had done this thing called MBSR, which is mindfulness-based stress reduction. And it culminated in a one-day meditation retreat and it was kind of like a collection of different mindfulness techniques. So you got a little bit of exposure to different things, whether that's yoga, walking, meditation, sitting meditation, body scan meditation. But really the one day retreat, which was six hours long, was like the most powerful thing for me. So, you know, my brain was like, I want to do, what's like the Navy seals boot camp of meditation retreats? And talking with some friends and colleagues and whatnot, they said, Oh, the 10-day vipassana, you gotta do that. And so,

Tom DePaola is a Ph.D. candidate studying higher ed and academic labor at USC, and co-author (along with Adrianna J. Kezar and Daniel T. Scott) of the new book The Gig Academy: Mapping Labor in the Neoliberal University. He joins us to discuss the increasing precarity felt by academics and other workers at colleges across the country, and to explore the longer history of neoliberalism’s devastating attack on both the ideological underpinnings and practical operation of American higher education.

Amadea Kezar runs the ASK Physiothérapie clinic on Green and St-Catherine's in Montreal and she invited me to her office so that we could talk about all things pelvis. The pelvis is essentially at the receiving end of the brain and nervous system so there is no wonder that our pelvic muscles and organs, genitals and evacuation system are entirely affected by patterns of fear and stress, post-partum and everyday habits. Amadea is on a mission to bring awareness and healing to these intimate parts. So many people today experience pain with sex and are understandably afraid or embarrassed to talk about it. So many women have issues with post-partum recovery that can take a toll on their wellbeing. We go right into the shame behind pain and the concrete solution Amadea uses to facilitate healing. We talk extensively about the vagina and specific sensitive areas where her patients can feel discomfort. Amadea talks me through what a typical appointment with her would look like and we cover all the bases such as douching and waxing and ways in which partners can get involved in the conversation about intimacy, pain and our pelvis'. We are incredibly lucky to have people like Amadea and her team of therapists out there in the world, educating and spreading awareness about the pelvis because as I learned, these issues are so widespread and have such an impact on our intimate lives. Bottom line, we are entitled to feel safe, and to feel pleasure, and to feel well in our bodies at any given time. This conversation may be triggering for some so please use your discretion.
