The Egoscue Method, developed by Pete Egoscue in the 1970s, is a unique approach to health and wellness that focuses on addressing the root cause of pain and dysfunction through personalized exercise recommendations. It emphasizes the connection between posture, movement patterns, and pain, proposing that most pain stems from compromised posture and repetitive imbalanced movements. Core Principles: Focus on root cause: Instead of simply treating symptoms, the Egoscue Method aims to identify and rectify the underlying postural and movement imbalances causing pain. Personalized exercise programs: Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, Egoscue practitioners develop tailored exercise routines specific to each individual's needs and imbalances. Movement reprogramming: Through targeted exercises and stretches, the method aims to retrain the body's movement patterns, restoring balance and symmetry to the musculoskeletal system. Benefits: Pain relief: By addressing the root cause of pain, the Egoscue Method can offer long-term relief from various musculoskeletal issues, including back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and headaches. Improved mobility and flexibility: The targeted exercises help increase range of motion and flexibility, enhancing overall movement efficiency. Enhanced athletic performance: By addressing postural imbalances and promoting efficient movement patterns, the Egoscue Method can optimize athletic performance and reduce the risk of injuries. Proactive approach to health: By focusing on postural correction and movement reprogramming, the method can help prevent future pain and dysfunction. How it Works: Egoscue practitioners typically conduct a postural assessment to identify imbalances and movement inefficiencies. Based on this assessment, they design a personalized exercise program that may include: Postural awareness exercises: These exercises help individuals become more aware of their posture and how it affects their movement. Stretching and strengthening exercises: Specific stretches and strengthening exercises target tight and weak muscles, respectively, to restore balance and improve flexibility. Movement reprogramming exercises: These exercises aim to retrain the body's movement patterns to promote efficient and pain-free movement. It's important to note that the Egoscue Method is not a quick fix. It requires commitment and consistent practice to achieve lasting results. While it can be beneficial for various individuals, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise program, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. From Pain to Purpose: How To Reclaim Your Life with Core Balance Dr. Ryan Peebles, DPT, is not just a licensed physical therapist in California; he's a testament to the transformative power of resilience, determination, and knowledge. The creator of the Core Balance Training program, Dr. Ryan's journey began not in a clinic or classroom, but on the basketball court and the waves of California's beaches. As a junior in high school, debilitating lower back pain robbed him of his passions: basketball and surfing. The pain persisted and intensified, casting a decade-long shadow over his life. Despite seeking help from numerous professionals and trying a myriad of treatments, from acupuncture to the Egoscue method, relief remained elusive. A chiropractor even grimly predicted a wheelchair-bound future by age 30. However, a pivotal moment in 2010, while curled up in pain, marked a turning point. Dr. Ryan realized that his issues weren't isolated to his back; his entire body was out of balance. Determined to reclaim his life and return to surfing, he embarked on a relentless quest for knowledge. He identified muscle imbalances as the root cause of his chronic pain and began to develop a holistic approach to address it. Seeking a deeper understanding, Dr. Ryan pursued a doctorate in physical therapy, graduating with 'High Honors' in 2015. His education, combined with his personal experience, allowed him to refine his approach. He recognized that the key to alleviating chronic pain lay in restoring the body's core balance. Today, Dr. Ryan's Core Balance Training program has become a beacon of hope for thousands, helping them break free from the "back pain spiral." His journey from pain to purpose is not just about healing himself but empowering others to understand their bodies and reclaim their lives. 3 Top Tips 1. The Body's Interconnectedness: Discover how issues in one part of the body can impact other areas, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to pain and healing. 2. Navigating the Treatment Maze: Gain insights into the myriad of treatments available for chronic pain, their effectiveness, and how to discern which might be best suited for individual needs. 3. Empowerment through Knowledge: Learn the significance of understanding your body's unique needs and imbalances, and how this knowledge can be the first step in breaking free from the cycle of chronic pain and reclaiming an active, fulfilling life. Episode Summary In this episode of the Fit is Freedom Podcast, I'm going to be outlining the top things you can do to deal with aches, pains, and injuries. From prevention to mitigation to rectification, I've learned some things along the way that I hope can help you in your fitness journey.    In no way am I pretending to be a medical expert or a doctor. I have no letters behind my name, but I do have years of experience being an athlete and coaching countless people on their health and fitness journeys. In that time, I've learned a thing or two, so here are some of the things I've learned.  How to Deal With Aches, Pains, and Injuries First and foremost, if you're experiencing discomfort, pain, or something that is simply not right with your body, it is always best to seek the help of a professional first. Your doctor, physical therapist, or trainer is an important piece to both preventing and recovering from injuries!    In addition to utilizing a professional, I've learned some other great tools and tidbits of advice on handling aches, pains, and injuries that fall into two categories: physical and mental. To start, let's dive into the physical ways to handle discomforts while on your health and fitness journey…   Check out our videos on YouTube!   Physical Ways to Deal Listen to Your Body Plain and simple, “No pain, no gain” is baloney! That way of thinking can be really harmful to you in the long run. Should you challenge yourself? Absolutely! Should you push yourself so hard after noticing an ache or sharp pains just to get your reps finished? Absolutely not!  Fitness Flip If you're noticing a twinge or a pain showing up consistently, consider doing a “fitness flip.” Like, if you've been running a lot and training for a long race, throw in some strength training or some upper body work. Changing things up can relieve some of the pressure off of overused joints and muscles, mitigating or preventing any potential injuries!  Go to Physical Therapy PT has some great exercises specifically designed for you, your body, and your injuries! The only problem with physical therapy is the lack of commitment people have. If you put in the work, you're going to see results. Plain and simple!  Join our private Facebook Group!   Acupuncture Everyone is different, and some people may completely freak out when thinking about acupuncture! But I've actually seen a lot of success come out of it from clients and myself alike. I think it can be a very helpful tool to put in your toolbelt. Massage Similar to acupuncture, massage is just a way to take care of your body a little more than you typically do. Massages can be a great tool to work out some aches and pains from training consistently. Not to mention, it's incredibly relaxing!  Egoscue Many of you may not have heard of Egoscue, but it shares some similarities with PT. They look at your body structure and provide you with exercises to rebuild your strength in your body.    Coming Soon! The fitness consistency book that will change your life!  Get updates here.    Yoga In today's society, yoga seems to be transforming into these big, challenging performative workouts. Taking a step back and doing some slow flow, gentle yin yoga with simple moves can really help you prevent or recover from your workouts! Foam Roller and Trigger Balls Boy, do I love to hate foam rollers and trigger balls! They can be painful at times, but they will also yield some incredible results for your recovery. Neuro MD Neuro MD is a therapy device that uses electrical stimulation to relieve pain in your back and other regions. I particularly love using this product for aches and pains because it doesn't have a bunch of cords, and it's easy to set up and use.  Compression Tights   Compression tights apply pressure to your lower legs to help with circulation and lessen the pain when running or working out. This would be a great thing to consider if you struggle with aches and pains in your feet or lower legs while working out, running, or hiking.  Supplementation   In a recent podcast, I shared all of the different supplements I am currently using to better my health. Finding the right supplements can help keep your body in tip-top shape!  Red Light Therapy My final tip on how to deal with aches, pains, and injuries is more of a controversial one! I highly recommend that you do your research as I have about red light therapy. In my life, it has made a big difference! Mental Ways to Deal There are so many ways to deal with the physicality of aches, pains, and even injuries, but it's also important to take care of yourself mentally. Prepare for Withdrawals Working out and moving your body is so good for you. It releases all kinds of feel-good chemicals in your brain. If you have an injury or pain that requires you to take time off, you need to be prepared for feelings of withdrawal. Your body won't be receiving all of those natural benefits, and that can be hard to maneuver.   Be aware that this may happen, and try to find some alternative forms of movement if you can. For example, if you have a dislocated shoulder, you could still go for walks to get some movement in.  Be Aware A way to prevent injury is to be aware of the risks, common injuries, and even your surroundings. If you understand the exercises you're doing and their most common injuries, you can also learn specific ways to prevent them.  Listen to Your Body The first tip for physical ways to reduce injury is also the final tip for mental ways. Paying attention to how you're feeling when working out can really make a big difference!    Schedule a FREE 15 minute discovery call with Kelly here!

On the show this week, I met up with Angi Campos of Egoscue Method San Francisco. I had read about Egoscue Method almost 10 years prior in the book Pain Free by Pete Egoscue. It was recommended by a friend to help treat my low back pain. I found the book fascinating, but the exercises seemed too simple and required 45 minutes of my time, and I just felt like I couldn't commit to that amount of time. Angi helped dispel all those myths and showed me how to correctly implement the Egoscue Method into my busy life. This episode is phenomenal, because we also film an almost 40 minute session of me going thru a typical Egoscue analysis and first time session. Angi used a camera and special computer program to help analyze my posture from four different views. From there, the computer correctly can help diagnose what exercises are needed to help rebalance my body. The photos were to say the least, eye opening. I couldn't believe the mechanical faults I was displaying. If you watch my session, you'll see that I ask Angi, “Based on my photos where do you think I experience pain.” She was able to say, “You probably experience right knee pain.” She was 100% right. I couldn't believe it.Then she walked analyzed my gait and how I walk. By making one simple adjustment, my gait improved 75% better, I was walking lighter (not so heavy like a thud thud sound every time I step). She then had me touch my toes, which I couldn't do without falling over. After a two minute isometric hold, I was touching my toes again. It was incredible! The idea behind Egoscue is restoring the posture and getting to the root cause of your problems to help extinguish pain that you might feel in your low back, hip, or knees (as they ware the most common). This is a phenomenal episode, and if you listen to this episode please contact your local practitioner or Angi at Egoscue San Francisco, because Angi is doing Zoom video conference postural analyses where she can actually use the same computer software to diagnose your structural issues remotely! How cool is that? Your first postural analysis session is free if you just mention JOEL and where you heard the episode. Brian is a world-renowned expert in the field of posture and peak performance. He's personally helped people like Connor McGregor, Tony Robbins, A-List Celebrities, and thousands around the world optimize their posture and become pain-free. I first met Brian after a Tony Robbins event years ago where he was on stage speaking and training 15,000 people. We just hit it off with great energy between us and knew I had to get him on the show for you all to hear these incredible stories and expert advice to become an optimized peak-performing human. Some questions I asked: How does The Egoscue Method relate to the 2-millimeter shifts for achieving success? What separates leading with significance from leading with your ego? How can Egoscue help you achieve high-level performance?  Why does posture matter and how can you improve it? How to powerfully engage your audience when speaking. In this episode, you will learn: The history of Egoscue - Pete Egoscue's journey to finding a way to live a pain free life. Leading with ego or significance - how to go beyond yourself to serve others.  Why it's important to surround yourself with people that add value to your life. How to better handle negative judgments. The power of Egoscue in helping you live a healthy, pain-free, and vibrant life. Granular tips and exercises to help improve your posture. Start them young - how spending time on the ground instead of walking early develops better kids. Tactical ways to powerfully engage your audience when speaking. Exploring Mind and Body

This is a tough one to write about. When you run a public business sometimes it's hard to figure out what to keep personal and what to share with the world. I've always felt it's important to lead by example. Given that we teach health and wellness I feel like my health and wellness should always be optimal. I've had people say, 'what do you mean you can't do that, you're the fittest person I know?' Which makes me feel like people expect perfection but that could only be my perspective. Over 2 years ago I was in a MVA, hit from behind (and the side) not going very fast at all. Since then my back has been giving me issues. I was going to physio and chiro and was at a point only 6 months ago where the pain and discomfort was almost completely gone. This April, shortly after I came back from LA, I got a pinched nerve in my lower back which literally had me on my back for 3 or 4 days. I could hardly stand up let alone walk. Some of you may remember when thankfully Dorothy filled in for live workouts on her own for 2 weeks at the end of April / beginning of May. Since then it's been a continued struggle. The pain from my back shoots down my leg into my calf and runs to the top of my foot and finally makes my toes numb much of the day. I feel like I've tried just about everything. Chiro, massage, acupuncture, cupping, rolling, stretching, thera gun, etc. Egoscue and even Eldoa exercises - along with focusing on anti-inflammatory foods (which is a usual thing but we've been putting more effort into this knowing food helps heal). I also ice multiple times a night before bed which helps me not wake up in the middle of the night with throbbing leg pain. I'm not saying these don't help, they do. Very much. The odd day when I lose all ambition to do anything for my pain it's so much worse. But I would hope after doing these consistently the pain would be gone completely, not just a little bit. Some days are harder than others. Some days mini depression rears its ugly head and I feel like I'll never get better. These are the worst days when I feel like my mental strength (which I'm usually very proud of) completely breaks down. Some days I'm irritable and likely hard to be around. My greatest fear is that the people I love, those closest to me (like Dorothy) won't be treated the way they should when I'm in my most pain and discomfort and lash out for no reason. And I don't think it's a proper excuse to treat people badly when you're in pain or aren't feeling well. Simple tasks like writing an email, answering a question or having a brief conversation is at times a challenge. It's like someone poking me with a needle, when my entire calf aches when I'm trying to focus on something else like a regular conversation. Or someone tapping you on your shoulder when you're trying to focus. I should have mentioned at the beginning, I don't believe chronic pain is something we have to live with. I don't believe we should expect our health to decline as we age. And nothing is going to change my mind. I'm committed to getting better and finding a way to do so. I may have watched every single youtube video on back pain, and herniated/bulging discs. I have talked to my doctor who mostly wants to do a bone scan, and mri (which takes a year to get) for the main goal of back surgery. For obvious reasons I'll avoid this at all costs but I'm also grateful we live in a world where surgery is a possibility when needed. I'm not sure if I'm ready to share this publically, but I know many people struggle with pain. I know a couple people in this group who have their own struggles with pain and discomfort, which is why I wanted to share. I wanted to let you know that you're not alone, and there are people that can relate. I'm not one to share these personal types of stories because I don't want sympathy and I certainly don't want anyone feeling sorry for me. So far, what I've gotten most out of this experience (bes...

Dr. John Lieurance is the guy to go to.  For supplements, the best thing is Kratom from superspeciosa.com and super clean. I just take 2-3 capsules if I’m in pain. It’s potentially addictive (although I’ve never found it to be the case). I always suggest that everyone examine their emotional pain before turning to an escape and using something like Kratom frequently.  Kava is a great natural alternative to Benzodiazepines, Xanax, and Valium, with no addiction risk. I’ve done a lot of research on this and have interviewed many world experts, and I don’t believe you can make it at home.  Dry fasting and Keto can help your body deplete deuterium levels over time.  The best way to decrease deuterium is with drinking water like Litewater. Most retail is completely toxic - non-stick Teflon is the worst! Stainless steel is a marketing lie, with most made from aluminum and nickel - both of which are very toxic. I love the natural and organic feel of Xtrema ceramic cookware.  All glass kettle for boiling water. Coffee makers and electric tea kettles can leech metals and plastics.   52:15 —Justin: What is the easiest and most effective way to structure water at home? I place my water near Somavedic devices.  Water in the sun in a Miron glass water tastes amazing. Run your water through a Vitalizer Plus Vortexer. Today we are talking about not just a morning routine, but our personal daily routine. What daily routine do you execute that carries your energy throughout the day and is a routine that is yours, meaning it resonates with you and you enjoy it? The point to all of this is that we can't follow fads, we can't do what we should do we must do what truly moves us, energizes us, and takes us to the next level. Once we figure that out, we need to find ways throughout the day to keep us in that state so we can deliver all day, not just for 3 hours in the morning. As for me, my routine is to wake up and drink 16 oz of water. Then 30 minutes later I drink 16 oz of celery juice, if you have no idea what I am talking about with the celery juice, go check out Anthony William and learn about the benefits of celery juice. Then, I go do a little Kinrgy each morning, a shout out to the Kinrgy crew who gets me moving each day! I then go onto my rebounder, my little indoor trampoline, and I do 25 minutes of incantations. Yep, I get my mind right and I continue to anchor in who I am! After that it's getting dressed and then doing 15 minutes of priming--a combination of breathing, meditation, gratitude, visualizations, etc. This is a Tony Robbins thing so YouTube the priming video and check it out if you need this in your life, and I would say we all do. That's my morning. But it doesn't stop there. Throughout the day I have alarm reminders on my phone to remind me to do breathing exercises, I do Egoscue movements, I stand up and move around, I mediate at night with Master CO, and I do some tapping before I go to bed, check out Tapping Solutions by Nick Ortner if you want to learn more about that. See, I don't just do something in the morning and then I'm done. I START in the morning and that morning routine is the launchpad for my entire day. And I can tell you, when it was the day after Christmas and I traveled to see family and I DIDN'T do my routine that day, ugh. I felt a difference! As you can see, I'm not exercising or doing a routine because it sounds good. I'm not following the hottest. new exercise routine. I'm doing what I do because it's what is right for me! So here's what I want you to think about, are you doing a routine because you are “supposed to” or have you found a routine that truly energizes you, lifts you up, empowers you, and helps you slay the day? Because maybe, just maybe, you dread your routine or can't stick to that resolution because it really isn't “yours.” Meaning, you are trying to do what you think you are supposed to do instead of doing what you truly need to do for you. Find what works for you. Steal shamelessly from my routine if you want. Then create a daily routine, not just a morning routine. Be Legendary!

Most of us have had a disappointing interaction with the culture and approach of conventional medical care. Perhaps it was a doctor who prescribed a highly addictive medication for back pain while seeming minimally interested regarding the pain’s precise cause. Perhaps it was a doctor writing a script for an old-standby antibiotic for symptoms barely heard out let alone dynamically analyzed. Or maybe it was waiting weeks for an appointment with a specialist only to arrive on time for your appointment then wait for hours and spend 7 minutes with the doctor. Dr. Heather Sandison is not one of these doctors, and her practice is doing its part to drag approaches of yesteryear into the 21st century. After earning her N.D. at Bastyr University outside Seattle, she took her passion for true healthcare to San Diego, CA where she is the founder and medical director of North County Natural Medicine, a pioneering clinic of integrative medicine in Encinitas, CA. Her list of expertise is impressive: bio-identical hormone therapy, integrative neurochemistry balancing, Walsh metabolic integrative psychiatry, mold and environmental exposure detoxification, Egoscue postural therapy, thyroid balancing, gut-brain axis issues and more. She mentors students at Bastyr’s San Diego campus, preparing the next generation of medical professionals to care for the body as a whole, and for the root causes of its ailments. From https://neurohacker.com/people/heather-sandison-nd (Neurohacker Collective) (where Dr. Sandison is advisor & podcast host): "Dr. Sandison’s broad naturopathic education made her particularly appreciative of Qualia’s potential. The feedback from her patients to whom she’s recommended Qualia have been so positive that she’s helping our research team in developing future NHC products. Utilizing bloodwork and diagnostics to create custom stacks is coming down the pike for NHC, and with educations as accomplished as Dr. Sandison helming our research, we’re more than a little pumped regarding our future product lineup." Today’s podcast features personal trainer, massage therapist and musician, Charlie Reid. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area for 8 years of my life brought with it the opportunity to meet and learn from many wonderful and knowledgeable coaches and trainers.  One of those that I met was Charlie, who I met at Pat Davidson’s “Rethinking the Big Patterns” seminar. Charlie and I later were able to both spend time at Kezar stadium learning sprint and movement philosophy from Adarian Barr, while having plenty of conversations on training. Charlie is one of the smartest and wisest coaches that you may not know.  His base of knowledge is massive, as well as the range of those coaches and systems he has spent time learning from.  If there is a system of thought out there in the world of movement and human performance, there is a good chance Charlie has experience with it.  Charlie is not only a strength coach, but also a certified massage practitioner, and spent years as a professional musician. On the podcast today, Charlie helps us “zoom out” our views on things like stretching, corrective exercise and motor learning.  At the core of our chat today is an extended discussion on the redundancy of the term “corrective exercise” and how to look at the body in a manner that leaves us wondering what truly needs to be corrected.  We also get into a learner-centered approach, and how facilitating that approach may differ from working from novices, up to more advanced athletes. And in the sense that you could relate it to just things that perhaps we do in the gym or in rehab or quote-unquote corrective type work. Charlie Reid: Yeah. I mean, a little bit of backstory. I toyed around with some meditation things and I had done this thing called MBSR, which is mindfulness-based stress reduction. And it culminated in a one-day meditation retreat and it was kind of like a collection of different mindfulness techniques. So you got a little bit of exposure to different things, whether that's yoga, walking, meditation, sitting meditation, body scan meditation. But really the one day retreat, which was six hours long, was like the most powerful thing for me. So, you know, my brain was like, I want to do, what's like the Navy seals boot camp of meditation retreats? The Hacked Life

I can't thank Angi enough for offering this service to our listeners, it's people like her that make us realize we are all connected in a much bigger way, and I'm grateful for people like her that are out serving us every day.Timeline12:42 - How Angi got started with Egoscue17:00 - How Egoscue is different20:10 - Why Egoscue works22:18 - What's a typical session like27:02 - What are E-cises and how these exercises turn on our muscles?30:30 - Why just doing exercises to “turn on” the muscle might not work32:40 - Herniated discs & why they are not a big deal34:20 - How Egoscue practitioners can continue to support clients via ZOOM37:00 - Most common injury trends Angi is seeing in the clinic37:52 - Egoscue and professional athletes 41:20 - How often should patients come in and retest?45:20 - How do you make time for Egoscue? In this episode of the Regenerative Warrior podcast, Dr. Carter talks with Brian Bradley about the Egoscue method and how it can fix common body imbalances. Brian has been studying “true” biomechanics and human anatomy using The Egoscue Method for more than 25 years. So what is the Egoscue Method? Developed towards the end of the Vietnam War by Pete Egoscue, a combat veteran who developed the method suffering through myriads of pain problems due to injuries he sustained during the war. The method espouses that the cause of musculoskeletal dysfunction, and subsequent pain, is the lack of motion that humans require to live and thrive. Today's conversation with Brian Bradley revolves around how the Egoscue Method might help improve stem cell therapy outcomes in people with chronic pain problems. They discussed the method in detail and lays out the level of commitment involved for people who might be interested in using Egoscue to manage their chronic pain. John shares how his work in physical therapy led him on a path where he encountered the revolutionary Egoscue Method – a natural, Postural Therapy, focused on the root-source of pain to bring relief to people once trapped in chronic pain. So impressed by the results his family and clients were experiencing that he and his bride felt led to partner with Egoscue as franchisees. And, subsequently rose to becoming one of the top Egoscue operators in the country – but not without precarious, character refining valleys with life threatening health, financial and business low points along his path. John’s abiding faith in Jesus Christ is his life-line to emerging through the flames more dependent on God’s grace and more refined as a disciple maker.     Show Notes: How does John Cattermole define his “Calling” What experiences and clues did John have that convicted him to know entrepreneurship was included in his vocational calling How did the Egoscue Method alter his family’s life and what makes Egoscue such a revolutionary form of self-practiced healing How are posture and stress related to pain and what can you do to leverage these truths What easy and simple exercises can we do to counter the negative effects and monotony of sitting for long periods of time Maintaining your “container” is key - If you lose your body, you lose your capacity to perform and potentially your career How does the relationship of stress correlate to physical pain Worry causes the heart to flutter and the palms to sweat What leads to a feeling of helplessness and victimization Pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you What is one key strategy that helps John balance business and relationships The closer you walk with God the more in balanced your life becomes What has John learned from his trials and tribulations Step-up and live-up to the responsibilities that God has entrusted you with Why is it mission-critical for men to heed their calling Faith lives in our daily choices What wisdom has John learned to do and not to do as “couple-preneurs”  Key Points / Quotes: “It’s our responsibility to carry out the responsibilities that the Lord has entrusted us with. And it’s to do our jobs well, it’s to exercise love toward our families and to be of service to other human beings.” - John Cattermole   Sitting correctly is the most efficient postures to carry out our life’s purpose. Sedentary lifestyles, where we remain seated too long, are an epic global health problem. (Egoscue) This is really a method where we show other people how capable they are of resolving their own chronic pain through postural correction. If muscles are not in use, the body does not send energy to those muscles.   Resources Mentioned: Linkedin: John Cattermole Egoscue of Phoenix John Cattermole (Phone): (602) 443-6818 John Cattermole (Email): JohnC@Esgoscue.com

If you know much about pain management, body alignment, and chronic pain relief, chances are you’ve already heard of the Egoscue Method. As the creator and developer of the method, Pete -- who I have the pleasure of introducing as today’s guest -- knows it intimately and understands exactly how it works. This exercise therapy program is globally acclaimed for treating chronic musculoskeletal pain and offering safe, effective, permanent relief from chronic pain. To hear how it works, as well as to learn about tips and techniques you can use to keep yourself fit, healthy, and pain-free, tune into this episode! Find Out More About Pete Here: egoscue.comEgoscue UniversityPete Egoscue on Facebook@PeteEgoscue on Twitter In This Episode: [01:54] - What exactly is the Egoscue Method, and why would someone need to use it? [03:32] - Pete points out that you don’t need to go to an Egoscue clinic in person; they do Skype appointments as well. [04:50] - In response to Stephan’s description of the “air bench” exercise, Pete explains that exercises aren’t necessarily for the muscles in which you feel them. He also mentions how he came up with many of the exercises. [06:23] - What does the Egoscue Method provide that the Alexander Method, for example, doesn’t? [07:08] - Pete describes how his own experiences led to his creation of the Egoscue Method. This led to his nerve pain completely going away, he says. [08:44] - Most of the Egoscue Method’s public speaking is now done by Bryan Bradley. Stephan then expands on how he became familiar with the method. [10:07] - We learn how Pete’s connection with Tony Robbins came about, and how Tony became a fan of the Egoscue Method. Pete also talks about Tony’s Life & Wealth Mastery program. [13:20] - Stephan’s latest book is on personal transformation, rather than his usual topic of internet marketing. He and Pete then talk more about personal transformation. [14:40] - Pete talks about the way we address pain by looking for the problem then offering the patient a solution. What’s left out, he explains, is the “why” and solving the root of the problem. [17:35] - Stephan brings up a pain of his own, in his left index finger. Pete then walks him through several steps to reduce this pain. [21:35] - Now that Stephan’s finger pain is lessened through moving his shoulders and spine, Pete reiterates that the origin of pain isn’t necessarily where you feel the pain itself. [23:18] - How many different exercises are there in Pete’s database? Over 400, he reveals, then talks about his new machine and how it helps in creating customized menus of exercises. [26:16] - If you have an Egoscue Method appointment, be honest about how much time you’re willing to devote to these exercises, Pete advises. [27:27] - Stephan asks Pete’s advice on sitting. Instead of answering briefly, Pete takes us on a journey through the way cells and the body operate. [30:47] - If you’re sitting in the posture that Pete put Stephan in to help his finger, then sitting itself won’t be a problem, Pete says. He then emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated and explains that chronically dehydrated people have lost their thirst response. [33:45] - Stephan returns to a point that Pete had mentioned, about varying eyesight being a symptom of dehydration. Pete then elaborates on what he means and how this is related to dehydration. [35:13] - Pete offers a formula for how much water to drink daily: divide your body weight in half and then convert that to ounces. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, drink 75 ounces of water a day. [36:11] - Sugar is poison, Pete explains. He walks us through how the body reacts to sugar, and why that’s a problem. He then advises against consuming certain ingredients, saying that “if you can’t pronounce [the ingredients], neither can your body, and you don’t want to ingest them.” [39:24] - Pete explains the origin of Gatorade, and the ways in which it’s now different than it was. He and Stephan then talk more about sugar. [41:36] - Does Pete get his food from local farmers markets? [42:14] - Pete offers his recommendations for those of us who don’t have private chefs. “You can’t unconsciously eat,” he explains. He then reveals why fast food is bad for you, despite using high-quality ingredients: the intention involved in creating the food. [44:59] - Pete shares his thoughts on vegetarianism and the Mediterranean diet. [46:24] - Stephan has recently started blessing his food before he eats it. He mentions what inspired him to make this change, which involves Dr. Emoto’s work with water crystals. [48:11] - We learn about Pete’s exercise regimen. He spends about half an hour each day on his Egoscue Method menu, and another 60 to 90 minutes on working out. [48:49] - The body doesn’t know how old it is, Pete reveals, and each of us knows our own health better than anybody on the planet. [50:49] - Pete asks Stephan if he ever goes to the gym. He then points out the association many people have between effort, results, judgment, and fitness. He then offers his own inspirational definition of fitness. How to take a world class athlete and make them better using nothing but their body weight and what looks like a jungle gym for adults. We discuss the Egoscue methodology which Brian has been an integral part of since he met Pete Egoscue in 1991. Since then Brian has been touring the globe teaching the method and inspiring others alongside Tony Robbins! You have to have some pretty big stones to get up on stage with one of the most powerful speakers of our generation. We also discuss how every movement is a test. We can learn from our athlete’s movements what their limitations are without a formal screen. The movement is the screen. Just call 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail, leave a Skype voicemail to username "pacificfit", or e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com. Listener Julia asks: "I have a question that you probably have not been asked before.  I am a top age-group female, age 56, triathlete who has been competing for 21 years. I've done 11 Ironmans including 4 Hawaiian Ironmans. I'm very strong on the swim and the bike but my running is slow due to my (I think excessive) muscle mass and a knee issue.  My body fat varies between 18-19%.  How can I lose muscle mass?  They say at around 35 years of age you start losing muscle mass…..I'm still waiting! How can I lose muscle mass besides starving; because then I would not be able to train for the 8-10 triathlons I do a season? I do not eat excessive protein or take anything that would “beef me up”.  People constantly comment on my muscles and I do not lift weights." Listener Patricia asks: "I need your help, I am so confused! I am a female, 5'7, 160lbs. I am trying hard to lose weight but I am really struggling in this department. I have been focused since Nov, and even though I have run three marathons in three months, bike long rides every weekend, run, swim and weight train during the week, and eat moderately well, I have not lost a single lb. I have gotten a local personal trainer to help me with muscle gain to aid towards this goal and recently she lent me a bodybugg device. My Polar HR has been indicating I burn approx. 10 cal/min during moderate to intense exercise. Well, I wore the BodyBugg for a 70mi bike ride (windy and hilly) and while I did not hammer it (working on base building) I was working pretty hard. Well, that took approx 4 hours and the BodyBugg says I only burned 1200 calories! According to my HR monitor, I burned 2400 calories. That's a BIG difference! No wonder I can't accomplish any progress. My trainer says 'welcome to the reality of calorie burn' that BodyBuggs are much more accurate because they use body heat. My question is, what's your input on the difference between the two and what should I trust? Also I cycled for 2:20 min. Body Bugg shows calorie burn of 565 vs HR Monitor (Polar) of 833. I ran for 45 min. Body Bugg shows calorie burn of 404 vs. HR Monitor of 450. Hopelessly confused and quite frustrated." Listener John asks: "While it is fresh in my mind, I was wondering if some point you could  give us an idea on training in a city that is not friendly to bikes. This weekend we had a car hit someone riding in a large group of cyclists while obeying traffic laws. In Tennessee, we have passed cycling laws but they don't seem to be getting through to motorists. What are your ideas on how to train when it's not safe to ride all   over town? Some of my thoughts, much more training on a trainer or roller, or finding a short loop in a park? I want to improve my skills on my bike but want to be safe also." Listener Mandy asks: "My husband is reluctant to get into endurance sports because he read an interview with Dr. Ken Cooper that said that the free radicals produced by heavy endurance training cause all sorts of diseases from heart disease to cancer to virtually everything else. What is your take on that?" Listener Chad asks: "I was wondering what your recommendations are for taking salt tablets while racing?  I have read where you can just take them orally and your body will know when to spit them out.  How does this affect your overall health long term? I fall flat after about 3 to 3.5 hours of training or racing, no matter what or how much I ingest for fuel, all of the symptoms that are said to come from low sodium I feel at that point.  So I know I need it, but really would like to know the healthiest way to get it.  Love all your podcasts, and recommend them almost daily to people." In my response to Chad, I talk about the Millennium Sports Athlytes. Listener Chuck asks: "You've talked about the benefits and science of wearing compression socks: would wearing compression tight have a similar effect, or are these socks designed differently?  I have some Under Armor tights and I'm curious if I would get benefit out of wearing these or not." Listener John asks: "In an interview on “goat vs cow's milk”, the guest speaker mentioned that homogenization of milk destroys the fat globules and releases free radicals.  We have reduced our dairy consumption, but still consume low fat plain yogurt, some cheese, whey protein and occasionally raw farm fresh milk.  I like to make fruit smoothies that usually include yogurt, whey protein and sometimes milk.  Is the blending of these ingredients homogenizing the globules and releasing free radicals?" Listener Grace asks: "1. What is your take on Peter Egoscue's pain management methods? I have just started reading this as a way to relieve SI pain and IT band pain. 2. What protein supplements should women take? I have heard so much about whey protein that is not positive, now I am stuck. My training involves running 4 times a week, about 5 miles each and strength training for 1/2 hour each of those days." In my response to Grace, I recommend she check out http://www.runwithnopain.com and http://www.bulletproofknee.com , and also to check out the Mt. Capra Double Bonded whey protein and the Living Fuel LivingProtein. Listener Jim asks: "Do expand a lungs work?" Listener Lorenzo writes: "Dude, my wife stumbled on a new recipe. Our dog is 4 years old today (Chihuahua - Gomez), so obviously we had a party and my wife made him a cake.  She took 1/2 cooked quinoa and 1/2 cooked kidney beans (smashed) and "enough" almond butter to keep everything together.  she made a "cake" out of it. Well I watched my dog eating his cake and wondered "can I have that cake and eat it too?"  So I tried it...it is very good and stayed together extremely well.  Probably would be suited best as  a meat substitute in hamburger patty applications, use at will but if you get rich off of my wife's invention I will need some kickback." Finally, listener Chuck has a call-in comment about the Triathlon Dominator package.
