Today's guest needs little introduction in the world of food and travel journalism, a renowned restaurant critic, a writer whose words can make your mouth water, and a familiar face on TV—many of you will recognise him from his appearances as a judge on MasterChef. It is of course Jay Rayner.Jay's is a name synonymous with gastronomic excellence. As a long-time food critic for The Observer, he's sampled and critiqued some of the best, and worst, dining experiences around the globe. Beyond his razor-sharp reviews, he's a celebrated author, his books like "The Man Who Ate the World" and "My Dining Hell” offering a deeper look into the intersections of food, culture, and travel. And he's back with a new book, “Nights Out at Home, Recipes and Stories from 25 years as a restaurant critic". And he reflects on these years, and the 1000s restaurants he's visited on today's episode. I interviewed him a few weeks ago on the South Bank in London and I loved getting a glimpse into the world of reviewing restaurants, how it works, his tips on what to order when travelling, and the culinary destinations that have stood out to him, lots of restaurant recommendations as you might expect, so don't forget they're all included in the episode show notes here on your podcast app, and on the podcast website too.
Muscles & Mindset Podcast Episode: Finding Your "Enough": Exploring Abundance vs. Scarcity Introduction Welcome to the Muscles & Mindset Podcast with Dr. Ali Novitsky. In this episode, your favorite obesity medicine doc/fitness guru/physician coach delves into the concept of "enough" and how understanding it can lead to a more abundant life, both physically and mentally. This episode is inspired by Dr. Ali's recent six-week slow travel experience in Greece, which provided her with numerous "a-ha moments" that she is excited to share with you. Key Themes What is "Enough"? We explore the idea of "enough" in various aspects of life: Tangible Aspects: Money, weight loss, muscle mass, clothes, shoes, and purses. Intangible Aspects: Emotional and mental fulfillment, showing up as a parent or partner. Abundance vs. Scarcity Dr. Ali discusses how feelings of scarcity often manifest in tangible ways when we feel disconnected in our lives. For example, feeling a lack of money when there is emotional disconnection. Our brains tend to make abstract concepts tangible, which can lead to a scarcity mindset. Personal Experience in Greece The Packing Fiasco Dr. Ali shares a humorous yet enlightening story about arriving in Greece with eight full suitcases, only to realize that she had packed WAY more than necessary. This experience highlighted the concept of "enough" and how we often overestimate our needs. Living Simply Living in a three-bedroom apartment in Syros, Greece, with her family taught her the value of simplicity. They had fewer clothes, shopped daily for groceries, and wasted less. This minimalist lifestyle made her feel more abundant and less stressed. Practical Applications of "Enough" Financial "Enough" Dr. Ali Novitsky discusses setting a tangible "enough" for yearly income and focusing on meeting that without feeling scarcity. If individuals feel scarcity despite meeting their financial goals, it may be rooted in past experiences. Weight Loss "Enough" In her weight loss programs, Dr. Novitsky emphasizes "optimal weight loss," which focuses on maintaining muscle mass while losing body fat. She encourages setting realistic weight loss goals based on muscle mass and body fat ratio rather than arbitrary numbers. Reflections and Changes Personal Growth Dr. Novitsky's time in Greece prompted significant personal growth. She realized that she is enough as a partner, mother, daughter, and friend. This newfound self-acceptance has led to changes in her goals, lifestyle, and what she is willing to tolerate. Professional Offerings Dr. Novitsky introduces several programs designed to help individuals achieve optimal health: Muscles and Mindset: Beginner and advanced strength training programs. Transform for Physicians: A CME program extending from six months to a year. Optimal GLP-1 Weight Loss: Support for those on GLP-1 agonists. Nutrition Training for Healthcare Providers: A six-week live training program starting October 7th. Conclusion Dr. Novitsky encourages everyone to reflect on what "enough" means in their lives and how they can shift from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance. She thanks the audience for joining her on this journey and looks forward to helping them find their abundance. Until next time, stay healthy and abundant!

Some ancient sources believe they were an indigenous people of Greece, while others suggest they might have migrated from different regions, including the Black Sea Regions, Anatolia or the Balkans. Their precise ethnicity and language remain unresolved, though a combination of Proto-Indo European and Native Mediterannean is the most likely. The earliest references to the Pelasgians can be found in ancient Greek literature, particularly in the works of Homer, Herodotus, and Thucydides. In the Iliad, there were Pelasgians on both sides of the Trojan War. WHen Homer explains who the Ancient Trojans were, Pelasgians are mentioned between the Hellespontine cities and Thrace. Homer calls their town or district "Larisa" and characterises it as fertile, and its inhabitants as celebrated for their spearsmanship. He records their chiefs as Hippothous and Pylaeus, sons of Lethus, son of Teutamides. The Iliad also refers to the camp at Greece, specifically at "Argos Pelasgikon", which is most likely to be the plain of Thessaly, and to "Pelasgic Zeus", living in and ruling over Dodona. According to Homer, Pelasgians were camping out on the shore together with the following tribes: "Towards the sea lie the Carians and the Paeonians, with curved bows, and the Leleges and Caucones, and the goodly Pelasgi." In the Odyssey, they appear among the inhabitants of Crete. Which would possibly equate them with the Minoans themselves, who invented Purple Dye and migrated east towards coastal Levant and conquered Egypt. Odysseus, affecting to be Cretan himself, instances Pelasgians among the tribes in the ninety cities of Crete, "language mixing with language side by side".Last on his list, Homer distinguishes them from other ethnicities on the island: "Cretans proper", Achaeans, Cydonians, Dorians, and "noble Pelasgians". A fragment from Hesiod, calls Dodona, identified by reference to "the oak", the "seat of Pelasgians", thus explaining why Homer, in referring to Zeus as he ruled over Dodona, did not style him "Dodonic" but Pelasgic Zeus. He mentions also that Pelasgus was the father of King Lycaon of Arcadia. Asius of Samos claimed that Pelasgus as the first man, born of the earth. This account features centrally in the construction of an enduring autochthonous Arcadian identity into the Classical period. In a fragment by Pausanias, he cites Asius who describes the foundational hero of the Greek ethnic groups as "godlike Pelasgus [whom the] black earth gave up". Sophocles, in one of his famous plays, presents Inachus, as the elder in the lands of Argos, the Heran hills and among the Tyrsenoi Pelasgoi, an unusual hyphenated noun construction, "Tyrsenians-Pelasgians". Interpretation is open, even though translators typically make a decision, but Tyrsenians may well be the ethnonym Tyrrhenoi. A possible connection to the city of Tyre, a possible location where many Minoan Migrants moved to. All of this comes into context when we examine the writings of Pherecydes of Syros, the famous Pre-Socratic, who claims to have in his posession, the Pelasgian Creation myth, who he says was given to him by Phoenican Scholars. The sequence of Pherecydes' creation myth is as follows. First, there are the eternal gods Zas (Zeus), Chthoniê (Gaia) and Chronos (Kronos). Then Chronos creates elements in niches in the earth with his seed, from which other gods arise. This is followed by the three-day wedding of Zas and Chthonie. #gnosticinformant #4k #documentary --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gnosticinformant/message
Karen Lefebvre followed her childhood dream and moved to the idyllic island of Syros, Greece. A chance discovery way back in the 1980s led her parents to an unexpected family stay on the island. Now, prompted by a pandemic, a breakup, wanderlust, and an urge to return to the simple Mediterranean life she experienced as a teen, Karen finds herself harvesting olives, pressing oil, and happily renovating a new home on the very same island that stole her heart all those decades ago.“I wake up and I do some exercises on the balcony, get my sunshine, my morning sunshine, and then I do some yoga, have my breakfast, and then I will go into town and gather whatever I need or pay whatever bills I need to…. Then I'll head down for a swim at about anywhere between 2 p.m. to 4 .pm. And I'll spend an hour or so down there swimming and chatting with my friends, come back up, have something to eat, and then in the evening, I'll get back to doing some work or go to some kind of performance, meet some friends, have some friends over. Yeah, that's a pretty typical day for me.”Karen's life on Syros is a long way removed from the typical stressful worker's life she had back in Austin, Texas. But as the saying goes, ‘Leap, and a net shall appear'. It's pretty quiet on the islands of Greece in March, making it a good time to rent a scooter, get out on the quiet roads, and see what there is to see. That's exactly what International Living Lifestyle Editor Seán Keenan did in March of this year. March is a lovely time to be in the southern Mediterranean. Winter is retreating, in another few weeks the tourist flights will begin to arrive, and the hospitality industry will be at full tilt until October. But before that happens, there's a window of opportunity to catch the full beauty of the islands, as well as a chance to sample what year-round life is like in destinations which change their character entirely from one end of the year to the other. Many of the smaller islands in Greece—Mykonos, Syros, Santorini, Lesbos—spend the winter months in a state of near-coma. Without the driving economic force of tourism, the population reduces, amenities close for the season, and all but the most essential services are put on pause. But that doesn't mean that you need to abandon your dreams of a year-round Greek island life. On Rhodes—way over on Greece's eastern extreme—and on Corfu, at the country's western edge, you'll find hubs of population and activity that continue to thrive all year. Podcast host, Jim Santos, learns all about off-season living on the islands of Rhodes and Corfu, as he talks to International Living Lifestyle Editor Seán Keenan in this week's episode of Bigger Better World. High-risk MDS, often referred to as preleukemia, is a chronic form of blood cancer with a significant level of unmet medical need.MDS is a complicated disease, presenting several obstacles to drug developers, and no new therapies have been approved for the condition in over a decade. But that may be about to change, with multiple drugmakers, including some large pharmaceutical companies, including Takeda Pharmaceutical (TYO: 4502), Gilead Sciences (Nasdaq: GILD0, AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) and Novartis (NOVN: VX) making significant progress. In the last few years, at least half a dozen Phase II or Phase III trials have been initiated globally, with a variety of approaches under investigation.Three such trials have started this year alone, including a pivotal study of Syros Pharmaceuticals' (Nasdaq: SYRS) candidate tamibarotene - an oral RARa agonist which could become the first in a new class of treatment option. In this episode we discuss the treatment landscape in preleukemia, as well as the company's plans for tamibarotene, with Syros chief executive Nancy Simonian and chief medical officer David Roth.

MSC Cruises has commemorated being back at sea for twelve months following the global industry's shutdown in March 2020 as a result of the global pandemic. One year ago on 16 August, MSC Cruises became the first major cruise line to resume operations for international sailings when MSC Grandiosa departed Genoa for a seven-night voyage in the West Mediterranean. This re-start was down to a range of local, regional and national authorities in Europe sanctioning a Health and Safety protocol that MSC Cruises had developed with an external panel of medical and public health experts designed for the wellbeing of guests, crew and communities that the Company's ships would call. A protocol that, eventually, set the standard for the industry and paved the way for more lines to restart. Twelve months on and more than half of the line's fleet is safely back at sea – sailing around the UK, both the Mediterranean Sea and Baltic Sea in Europe, North America and the Caribbean and the Red Sea in the Middle East. More ships are scheduled to resume operations in the coming weeks and months as part of the line's phased plan for returning the full fleet to operations by next year.Remarkably, MSC Cruises has forged ahead with its determined ambition for sustainable growth as it simultaneously returned ships to water. For the line, the past twelve months were a very busy year of return to service but it retained an undiminished laser-focus on the long-term future of the business and in a sustainable manner. Below are some highlights from the past year at MSC Cruises.Luxury Expedition Yacht Crystal Endeavor Makes its US Debut with New October Voyage from MiamiCrystal Expedition Cruises announced a nine-night Caribbean itinerary for new luxury expedition yacht Crystal Endeavor, featuring once-in-a-lifetime encounters on remote islands, calls in exclusive harbours typically only accessible to private yachts and sailboats, and the rare opportunity for U.S. travellers to embark from a close-to-home port and cruise aboard the state-of-the-art expedition yacht during her inaugural season. The new nine-night voyage, Expedition Yachting: Caribbean Mystique, will sail from Miami to San Juan October 25 – November 3, 2021, calling on Great Exuma and Man of War Bay, Inagua Island, Bahamas; White Bay and Great Harbor (overnight) on Jost Van Dyke, and Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands; Gustavia, St. Barts; and Saba, Netherlands; concluding in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Oana Aristide, a macroeconomist by background who started her career at the Romanian Central Bank where she also worked with the office of the Romanian Prime Minister. She has worked as Chief Economist at Dun & Bradstreet in London before leaving it all to manage a boutique eco-hotel on the island of Syros in Greece. As if the refurbishment project of turning a heritage villa into a hotel would not have been challenging enough, the global pandemic delayed the formal opening of Hotel Aristide by one season to the 2021 summer season.Oana is also a published author, with her debut novel (Under the Blue) being published by Serpents Tail in March 2021. A page-turning climate dystopian novel, Under the Blue is a literally thriller about a pandemic and the rise of AI.In our conversation we follow Oana's journey from a Romanian emigrant growing up in Sweden, to being a macroeconomist in Romania and London, to being a hotelier and a published novelist. We talk about what it means to lead the refurbishment project behind Hotel Aristide during a global pandemic, which is incidentally one of the main themes of Oana's first book.Visit the Women in Finance Podcast website for the show notes and to sign up for our newsletter.
Today, I am bringing you a story that is unfolding on a small Greek island - SYROS, where author and economist Oana Aristide has renovated a run-down, neo-classical villa into a jewel box of a hotel of just 9 suites, called Hotel Aristide. Oana’s personal story is a dramatic one. She grew up in Soviet-occupied Romania in her grandmother’s care, when her parents and sister defected - without her - to Sweden. She trained formally as an economist, a role which took her into the halls of presidential power in Bucharest, before a career in economic advisory in London and Europe. On any reckoning, in economics Oana had built the foundation of a solid professional career. But she was busy after hours as well, writing and editing a first novel, Under the Blue, which, with some prescience, describes an epic road journey during a devastating global pandemic, brought on by the unanticipated effects of climate change. Syros Pharmaceuticals is developing a platform for targeting the regulatory genome with therapies to address diseases at a fundamental level. At the end of last year, the company entered into a collaboration with Global Blood Therapeutics to develop new therapies for sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia. Under the collaboration, Syros is using its platform to discover drugs that turn on the production of fetal hemoglobin as a way to treat these rare, hereditary, blood disorders. The production of fetal hemoglobin is usually shut down soon after birth. We spoke to David Roth, chief medical officer of Syros Pharmaceuticals, about the collaboration, how Syros’ approach works, and why activating fetal hemoglobin is viewed as a promising approach to treating these genetic blood diseases.

The SNF DIALOGUES series of monthly events took its first trip outside Athens. A great number of friends of the event, which was open free and open to all, accompanied the SNF Dialogues in its first “escape” outside Athens, and traveled to Syros, the birthplace of Markos Vamvakaris. The visit to Syros took place in accordance with the event's theme, which was dedicated to the history of rebetiko. The event, which was hosted at the premises of the unique Syros Textile Factory, featured Dimitris Mistakidis, musician and teacher at the School of Arts in the Department of Traditional Music at the University of Ioannina, Giorgos Kokkonis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Music Studies at the University of Ioannina, and Karolos and Tanya Veanus Tsakirian, luthiers. The speakers shared their rich knowledge of the roots and influence of Rebetiko on the world music scene, its sociological value, its relatively recent destigmatization, and the cultural trends that have transported it across the globe. The event featured a presentation of the work of the tireless Rebetiko researcher , Panagiotis Kounadis. Mr. Kounadis has recently been developing, with the support of the SNF, a Virtual Museum dedicated to rebetiko. The project is implemented with scientific support from the University of the Aegean, which participates through its Department of Product & Systems Design Engineering, based in Syros. The Kounadis Archive is one of the best-organized archives, primarily featuring the urban folk music of 1900-1960. Established in 2007, it contains one of the richest collections of rebetiko music recordings and manuscripts, illustrating the uptick in creative musical composing during that era in Greece and abroad.

While most drug developers have sought to target aberrant genes or the proteins driving diseases, Syros Pharmaceuticals has developed a proprietary platform that targets the regulatory region of DNA to not only turn genes on or off but modulate their activity as well. The company is initially focusing on cancer and monogenic diseases. We spoke to Nancy Simonian, CEO of Syros, about the company's platform technology, the opportunities in targeting regulators of genes, and why this could represent a broad new approach to treating diseases.
