Happy Halloween B-oo's Crew! This Halloween we travel to Massachusetts to visit the worlds most notorious asylum, Danvers State Hospital! A Kirkbride building known as "The Kirkbride, The Witches Castle, Hell House on the Hill and The Castle on the Hill". There are many places that claim to be "The most haunted," but Danvers, being the inspiration for H.P Lovecraft's Arkham Sanitorium and then becoming the model for Arkham Asylum in Batmnan, seems to hold that title! Also known as the birthplace of the prefrontal lobotomy, Danvers was built to be a gentle care facility, but by the 1930's that would all change. Straightjackets, electroshock therapy, hydro therapy, lobotomies and many other "treatments" were used here....including the "Spread Eagle Therapy!"This is truly the house of horrors. SO get ready B-oo's Crew, because this one will have you re-thinking going to the hospital!Do you have a story you'd like read or played on the show? According to his rider, all Kirkbride appearances must be accompanied by a discussion of Stuart Gordon's 1989 mecha-magnum opus Robot Jox. Written by Joe Haldeman, Robot Jox is a strange remix of The Iliad, but with robots and vat-grown humans. Would Homer, given the opportunity, have called his epic poem Robot Jox? We think yes. The judge that presided over the Salem Witch Trials, John Hathorne, once lived here a few hundred years ago. Send us a Text Message.Hospitals and asylums seem to be among the most haunted of all places. In this episode we explore one of each: Spencer State Hospital and the Old South Pittsburg Hospital. Spencer State, one of over 300 Kirkbride buildings in the nation at the time, began as an overflow for what is now known as the Trans-Alleghany Lunatic Asylum. The Old South Pittsburg Hospital was abandoned because of a need for a larger facility, but rumors and legends live on though many of them are untrue. This week Laura, Krysta and Dean discuss the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, but first Krysta gives us some weird facts about potatoes and other similar tubers. Once we get done digging into that topic (what I did there, did you see it?) we go into the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The building of this facility was initiated in 1851. However, with the Civil War, the Virginia legislature attempted to take the money for it's continued construction and put it into their defense as they seceded from the Union. However, those funds had already been withdrawn by Union Troops and taken to Wheeling, which led to the statehood of West Virginia. After this military start, the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum went on to become a place that under many names attempted to treat the mentally ill, though often the cures were worse than the disease. Once we cover the history of the place we discuss ghosts and paranormal entities that live on site. And we also discuss television showws that have reported on ghostly events there as well as a video game that has an entire area based on the hospital. All that and more on this episode of the Family Plot Podcast!

And, you know that I love strategy, so I'm not suggesting that it's unimportant...but I do wish that we'd pump the breaks a bit and get to the heart of what social media can help us do... ...and that is to be more social. This episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast with social media expert Anita Kirkbride won't disappoint. We'll talk about how success on the platform comes from connecting with other users. We'll also cover the ways you can adjust what you want to see in your feed and make sure your content shows up in the feeds of your followers. But really — we both just want you to stop worrying about conversions and start focusing on connecting. Welcome back to the show Rob Kirkbride. Rob joins me to chat about NeoCon 2022, Fulton Market, industry trends, and most importantly, the new ventures he has started in the past few months. As usual, Rob and I had an amazing conversation full of fantastic insights you won't want to miss. Rob and I both attended NeoCon this year but he got to experience more of the show. What it really showed to him after having several conversations with others in the industry was that the contract interiors industry is booming. But an area that we are all falling short in is developing solutions for the hybrid workplace. Very few companies are still entertaining the idea of completely abandoning the office space but they have leaned into the hybrid workplace model. But what is the solution? Listen as Rob shares what he's doing to help others in the industry to reclaim their content and continue to attract new customers and clients with Write Office. That's not his only new venture though. Listen to the end to hear all about his foray into NFTs and why he thinks it's the right investment for the future. In this episode:[01:35] Welcome back to the show Rob![03:01] Listen as Rob discusses NeoCon 2022 and the new products being shown.[05:33] He shares which international designs caught his eye.[07:13] We lived through a tornado during NeoCon 2022.[08:21] My thoughts on Fulton Market.[11:18] Rob talks about Design Days at Fulton Market.[13:47] Learn about the Frovi product and a couple of Australian and Canadian companies.[19:01] He doesn't believe that work from home customers were very well represented by companies at NeoCon.[20:38] “The hybrid workplace is the greatest opportunity and the greatest challenge for our industry.”[23:22] Why the industry isn't coming up with a plan on what the hybrid workplace should be.[28:18] He talks about a new venture he has started and why he created, Write Office.[37:00] Who in the industry and outside the industry can use his experience.[39:47] The industry needs more people to stand up and share their voice. We're back with another Trevor Report. Trevor planned to focus on second generation contract interiors employees, but his next guest recently found out that his lineage goes back even further. Liam Kirkbride is a fourth generation in the industry and has some amazing insights to share about the manufacturing side of the business. He is extremely excited about the direction technology is going in the industry and has lots of ideas on how it can enhance the buyer and manufacturing experience even more. One of his favorite things about his roles is how creative he gets to be. For instance, as compared with the automotive industry which is also big in his area, he's able to see a project through from start to finish. Rather than building the one car, you get to see how the design of a space impacts mood, emotion, productivity and more. Liam's thoughts on how to bring young people into the industry are spot on. We need to get out there and talk about the industry more. Start showing kids in high school and college why the contract interiors industry is the place to be. Listen in to hear all about his story and the direction he sees the industry going in the future. In this episode:[02:31] Welcome to the show, Liam![02:52] He shares his role with Davis Furniture.[04:50] Learn about his journey and growing up in the industry as a 4th generation.[08:36] The advantages and disadvantages of being a 4th generation.[10:39] He talks about what stands out in the industry.[12:51] What he loves about the industry.[16:01] He discusses the huge opportunities he sees in the contract furniture industry.[17:58] Other technologies he believes could be beneficial to the industry.[20:07] Ways to bring younger individuals into the industry and how to keep them engaged.[26:11] Liam's perspective on supply chain issues.[29:19] Listen as Liam gives his ideas on ways to get younger people into the manufacturing side.[33:25] He challenges leaders to go out and build trust with the younger generation and expose them to the industry.[34:52] Thank you for being on the show! Elaborately conceived, grandly constructed insane asylums—ranging in appearance from classical temples to Gothic castles—were once a common sight looming on the outskirts of American towns and cities. Many of these buildings were razed long ago, and those that remain stand as grim reminders of an often cruel system. For much of the nineteenth century, however, these asylums epitomized the widely held belief among doctors and social reformers that insanity was a curable disease and that environment—architecture in particular—was the most effective means of treatment. In The Architecture of Madness: Insane Asylums in the United States (U Minnesota Press, 2007), Carla Yanni tells a compelling story of therapeutic design, from America's earliest purpose—built institutions for the insane to the asylum construction frenzy in the second half of the century. At the center of Yanni's inquiry is Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, a Pennsylvania-born Quaker, who in the 1840s devised a novel way to house the mentally diseased that emphasized segregation by severity of illness, ease of treatment and surveillance, and ventilation. After the Civil War, American architects designed Kirkbride-plan hospitals across the country. Before the end of the century, interest in the Kirkbride plan had begun to decline. Many of the asylums had deteriorated into human warehouses, strengthening arguments against the monolithic structures advocated by Kirkbride. At the same time, the medical profession began embracing a more neurological approach to mental disease that considered architecture as largely irrelevant to its treatment. Generously illustrated, The Architecture of Madness is a fresh and original look at the American medical establishment's century-long preoccupation with therapeutic architecture as a way to cure social ills. An immersive reading of the poem ‘A Visit to the Asylum' by Edna St. Vincent Millay reflecting on mental institutions and windows.Poem:A Visit to the Asylum Edna St. Vincent Millay Once from a big, big building, When I was small, small, The queer folk in the windows Would smile at me and call. And in the hard wee gardens Such pleasant men would hoe: “Sir, may we touch the little girl's hair!”— It was so red, you know. They cut me coloured asters With shears so sharp and neat, They brought me grapes and plums and pears And pretty cakes to eat. And out of all the windows, No matter where we went, The merriest eyes would follow me And make me compliment. There were a thousand windows, All latticed up and down. And up to all the windows, When we went back to town, The queer folk put their faces, As gentle as could be; “Come again, little girl!” they called, and I Called back, “You come see me!”References: Pérez-Fernández F, López-Muñoz F.
