This is a one-time session with Beth, who wrote in to be coached live on the podcast: “I'm fifty-four-years-old and have been divorced for five-and-a-half years. I've had two long-term relationships and several others that have fizzled out for one reason or another. This last round of online dating, I thought I was very intentional. I found one man who had all the qualities I'm looking for, and we had lots in common, but the attraction was mediocre and did not grow much in the two months of dating. I just ended things with him. I want to have chemistry and compatibility. My therapist has helped me see that I need to step away from dating and do more work on myself. I am willing to do the work, I just don't know what that work is and when I should try dating again? I want to find the right romantic partner. Boundaries are key to living a life with less stress and resentment and can be the difference between feeling secure and feeling frustrated. My guest Sandy Weiner learned firsthand how giving too much of herself to others without limits drained her both emotionally and physically, forcing her to decide what was important and then build her boundaries around those pieces.Like Sandy setting clear boundaries for yourself, allows you to protect the things that matter most - like your peace of mind! Learning how to establish healthy limits takes practice but is worth it in the long run as they will save you from feeling taken advantage of or being overburdened by others.Get ready to level up your life as we dive into building an unshakeable boundary system — discover how to establish rock-solid boundaries in every aspect of your life, from business to romantic relationships. In today's episode, Sandy talks to widows and widowers, giving great advice about dating, explaining how and when to date, and also when it is OK not to date. Key Takeaways: Sandy shares how she started helping people approach dating after/during grieving. When is the right time to start dating after losing your loved one? How does a widow or a widower communicate to a new partner that space needs to be created to honor the late spouse? You can love more than one person at the same time. How we talk about what happens to us is how people perceive it. Be open to something new happening to you. It is OK to be vulnerable and tell the person you are dating how awkward and hard it feels to be dating again. Susan and Sandy talk about how to explain to children the fact that their parents are dating again. What happens when someone is ready to date but does not know how? Online dating: Sandy explains how to approach it and stay safe in the process. Stay away from trauma bonds. Dating can be an opportunity to redefine yourself. Dating is also an opportunity to grow and evolve. Sandy shares her “morning pages” journaling activity as a way of practicing self-care. This week Love & Life partners with Veronica Grant's “How to Actually Feel Worthy in Love” Podcast Tour! We're one of 12 podcasts invited to delve into what it truly takes to date from a place of authenticity and confidence so as to build a healthy, happy relationship. But, how can we do so if we don't fundamentally believe we deserve love? Psychotherapist Elliott Anderson joins me to share a critical strategy he implements with clients and couples—values clarification. As we identify what matters to us and commit to behaving in alignment with our principles, we fortify our identity and confirm our inherent self-worth. For many clients, internalizing this foundation of self-respect provides the first step toward believing love is available to them and, most importantly, that they absolutely deserve it! We're honored to participate in the tour, between Sandy Weiner of Last First Date Radio and Madeline Charles of The Irresistible Woman podcast. Growing up, Sandy Weiner always thought she was going to be using her creativity in purely art endeavors. Her point of view pivoted when she recognized she found value in helping others in creative ways through her coaching. After spending time feeling like she had lost her value, she regained a strong sense of self by slowing down and reevaluating her value and priorities. Sandy’s mission is to help other women rediscover their value through setting limits, speaking up, understanding their worth. Using her three pillars of core confidence, Weiner leads our listeners through an exercise we all can do to identify and keep up with our internal values. This episode, she also gives dating advice that we can use during and after the pandemic. To learn more about Sandy, make sure to visit: Lastfirstdate.com Womanofvalue.com Listen to her podcasts: Woman of Value podcast and Last First Date Radio. And you can order her book “Becoming a Woman of Value” on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Woman-Value-Thrive-Life/dp/B088N3XH1F. Weiner on the importance of caring for yourself first: _12:53 “If you let yourself down, you're actually letting everybody down. And when you're more worried, I read about somebody else than yourself, then you're shifting into something. I think that's not you. And people don't really know you. They don't really know where you begin and end. And so you're not doing anybody a favor and it's just such an important message that we have to get through our heads that we need to take care of ourselves first. And when that's taken care of the right people, we'll accommodate and we'll listen to our boundaries as we will listen to theirs.” Weiner's advice for those questioning themselves: _17:39 “I looked at other people and said, Oh my God, I'll never be that. And I think we have to put ourselves on a pedestal and really understand that we have much more power and ability that we think and just trust them. We can don't listen to naysayers. I mean, people who were like, Oh, you're not making enough money coaching. You should just work at Starbucks. You'll get medical benefits. And I believed in myself and I kept going. And I think that, you know, you can't listen to all those other voices. You've just got to strengthen the voice inside.” — On The Dot Woman Content Corner Looking for more tips, motivation and direction? 2-Minute Tip: Build a Team Sometimes to get better, you may need help, and that's okay. Hire a coach. Join Toastmasters. Ask a friend or colleague. Take an online course. Take a traditional course. Read a book. Subscribe to a podcast about public speaking Or do all of the above. Or some combination of them. The point is you can build expertise, or at the very least, competence in a skill by assembling your own team of experts. They can be in person or virtual. It can be a dialog or a 1-way process. But you don't have to do it all alone. There's a community there you can build or be a part of. Post Tip Discussion: Meet Sandy Weiner I think the best way to sum up Sandy Weiner's approach to speaking (and probably a lot of other things) is "Just jump in and do it -- but don't do it alone." Sandy's first major talk was her TedX talk, which you can see here: [embed]https://youtu.be/yvzUMIcrBYU[/embed] While she may go straight for the deep end, she's successful because she prepares -- she works with coaches when she has a weakness and does the work she needs to do to be successful. I talk a lot about how 90% of the success of a talk is determined before you ever get on stage -- it's in the message, in the prep, and in the rehearsal. And that's how Sandy has succeeded as a speaker. Bio Sandy Weiner, founder of Last First Date, is devoted to helping women over 40 achieve healthy, toe-curling love. Sandy Weiner, founder of Last First Date, is devoted to helping women achieve healthy, off the charts love in the second half of life. An internationally known TEDx speaker, dating coach, speaker, and workshop leader, Sandy specializes in helping women communicate effectively, set clear boundaries in relationships, and value themselves. Sandy has contributed hundreds of articles to several prestigious publications, including the Huffington Post, Psychology Today, and The Good Men Project, and she is the dating expert at Better After 50. She is also the host of Last First Date Radio, an acclaimed show about attracting and sustaining healthy relationships in midlife. Playing Small Moment Sandy had the opportunity to do a TED Talk after discussing her love for TED Talks with a friend, but she was petrified of public speaking. She hired a speech coach and was able to deliver the speech with phenomenal affect. Sandy had to make the choice to play it small or be amazing. The Wake Up Call Sandy looked to the future of her marriage, realized that she would be alone with her husband, once the kids were older, and moved out. This was a thought that she was not looking forward to, and the more time they spent apart, the more their differences surfaced. Style of Leadership Sandy teaches her clients to be their own coach. She says “It’s not about powering over, it’s about powering with.” Sandy believes that empowering to change is much more powerful than shaming into change. What Are You Excited About? She is re-launching Find Love Online After 40, a pre-recorded course that helps women learn how to find love online, successfully. So how do we boomers know that the time is right to start having sex in a new relationship? What are the biggest mistakes us boomers make in regards to sex in new relationships? I know that many people are in long-term relationships where sex has lost a bit of its luster. How can we spice up a tepid or dormant sex life?
