They begin with the story of a WWII veteran's headstone discovered in a backyard in St. Petersburg, Florida. Next they journey to Pennsylvania to visit the oldest narrow gauge railroad in the U.S.; East Broad Top Railroad's mission to return a Civil War hero's gravestone after 118 years results in a touching family reunion. And finally, they unveil the remarkable restoration of a woman's headstone, once discarded near a dumpster, far from the cemetery where she was laid to rest. Bogart and Bacall moved into a white brick mansion in Holmby Hills, and he bought a fifty-five foot yacht called the Santana from Dick Powell, spending about thirty weekends each year on the water. With World War II over, Bogart wanted to do more radio. On September 17th, 1945 he hosted an audition for a new mystery/thriller program called Humphrey Bogart Presents. Meanwhile Bogart and Bacall were on screen together again in 1946, this time in an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe novel, The Big Sleep. During World War II, comedy, drama, news, and variety dominated the radio dial, but after the war, detective shows gained network popularity as programming shifted to smaller studios. They were considered a good deal for advertisers. Although Bill Spier was entrenched at CBS, he still had ties with his old agency BBD&O, as well as with Lawrence White, Dashiel Hammett's literary agent. Both ABC and CBS wanted to bring The Adventures of Sam Spade to the air. Initially, everyone wanted Bogart to be the star. Even with Bogart's drawbacks, it was assumed no other actor could fill Spade's shoes. Auditions were held in April of 1946. Enter Howard Duff. An audition was recorded on May 1st. In June, Wildroot officially signed on as sponsor. Spade would make its debut in July over ABC's airwaves. Not to be outdone, on July 2nd, CBS broadcast an episode of Academy Award adapting “The Maltese Falcon.” Humphrey Bogart reprised his role. We heard the opening portion earlier in this episode of Breaking Walls, here's the close. Meanwhile on October 14th, 1946 Bogart and Bacall reprised their roles from To Have and Have Not for The Lux Radio Theatre. The next January 5th, 1947, Bogart and Lauren Bacall were guests on The Jack Benny Program.
What is money? What makes money better or worse? And how can the past inform our future? Between the rise of cryptocurrencies and the risks posed by central bank digital currencies, these questions have become more important than ever. The Cato Institute is therefore pleased to welcome both Lawrence White and Dror Goldberg to present their latest books, Better Money: Gold, Fiat, or Bitcoin? and Easy Money: American Puritans and the Invention of Modern Currency, respectively, which seek to answer these questions and more. Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank are the two midsize banks that just collapsed. But... how can we have major bank failures, with billions of dollars at stake. Didn't we learn how to regulate banks during the financial crisis of the Great Recession? That was barely 15 years ago! In this episode, my guest, Dr. Lawrence White, explains that almost always when a bank run occurs, it's on a bank that's already insolvent! And he explains that we've been here before. That is, we've experienced how increases in interest rates have caused bank crises in the past. Dr. White has much to say about the impact of the FDIC on our banking system. He tells me about a time before FDIC when banks functioned just fine... that the relied on capital reserves to attract depositors - not an FDIC sign on their window! But Dr. White doesn't just leave here. In the perspective segment of our conversation, he provides an alternative banking system - one without an FDIC and with minimal regulations. To learn more about Dr. White and his extensive research and publications, you can visit his academic homepage. The one thing we all wish we had more of is TIME. You know the saying, "There's not enough hours in the day!" I get it, we're all busy. BUT, if you don't take the time to PLAN for your retirement - who will? Not all recessions are created equal. But economist Lawrence White tells CBS News that the one thing they all have in common is they were triggered by certain events and sometimes a recession can trigger making financial decisions while emotion. Then, Steve talks about his process and what separates him from other financial advisors and how he can help YOU.

Constrained discretion is held up as the reigning paradigm for central banks. But no matter how smart or well-intentioned central bankers are, discretionary policy contains information and incentive problems that make macroeconomic stability systematically unlikely. On this episode of the Hayek Program Podcast, we'll hear a book panel discussion on "Money and the Rule of Law," written by Peter Boettke, Alexander Salter, and Daniel Smith. Salter presents the book's main argument for general, predictable rules to provide a sturdier foundation for economic growth and prosperity. He is joined on the panel by David Beckworth, Lawrence White, and Daniel Smith. The panel is moderated by Peter Boettke.
Is it possible that the consensus around what caused the 2008 Great Recession is almost entirely wrong? On this episode of the Hayek Program Podcast, Scott Sumner and Lawrence White engage with this question as part of a broader discussion of Sumner's new book, "The Money Illusion: Market Monetarism, the Great Recession, and the Future of Monetary Policy." As part of the discussion, Sumner and White address the 2008 crisis in the context of fundamental questions regarding what type of monetary framework provides the best environment for a flourishing market economy. The pair address the use of tools such as nominal GDP targeting to foster this enviornment and consider the school of thought known as "market monetarism," for which Sumner is a leading advocate. They allow the government to do scalpel-like fiscal policies more easily, such as airdropping cash to citizens and stimulating spending. At the same time, CBDC could also allow the government to track individual spending behaviors. China is obviously leading the effort in CBDC adoption for all major countries. As of recording time, it's already run multiple trials in various major cities. This has spurred a debate as to whether the US should follow suit.We discussed:* CBDC and privacy * The consensus from the right and the left on the importance of CBDC, but the lack of urgency for implementation* Countries adopting Bitcoin as a legal tender* Hype vs reality: The possibility of China's CBDC becoming a currency to settle international trade and therefore be a real threat to USD* CBDC's potential cannibalization of private banks If you would like to debate or want to nominate someone, please DM me at @blockdebate on Twitter. Please note that nothing in our podcast should be construed as financial advice.Source of select items discussed in the debate (and supplemental material):Bob's article explaining his position: https://thehill.com/opinion/technology/497427-americas-digital-sputnik-momentLarry's article explaining his position: https://www.cato.org/cato-journal/spring/summer-2021/should-state-or-market-provide-digital-currencyGuest bios: Bob Hockett is a professor at Cornell Law School, focusing on Corporate Law and Financial Regulation. Lockdowns are finally lifting but the fog of misinformation is much slower to dissipate. Jon Miltimore has an eye-opening article on how many Americans are wildly misinformed about the risk of hospitalization due to COVID. There are many voices who have been warning for generations that our liberties are under attack. Given the current increased effort to consolidate more power in the hands of the ruling systems, Judge Andrew Napolitano has some questions regarding who will keep our liberties safe. There are lessons to be learned in the wake of the Boulder, CO supermarket mass murder. Kent McManigal says one of the biggest lessons is to never go anywhere unarmed when politicians are actively pushing gun control. That's when these events seem to occur. By the way, the MSM is nothing, if not predictable, in feverishly advancing their pet policies whenever someone one goes on a murderous rampage. Alexander Riley has penned a memo to the Woke Revolution as to how these things are to be exploited for political advantage. It's definitely worth a read. I'm not trying to start any rumors here but have you noticed how prices are rising lately? A prudent individual might want to start thinking a little more deeply about monetary policy and how to protect yourself against the ravages of inflation. Bitcoin marks its 10th anniversary with a lackluster record: while adoption has increased, it has yet to deliver on several promises. Transactions are too slow and expensive for daily use, and bitcoin is nowhere near replacing traditional central-bank currencies. Lawrence White, a professor of economics at George Mason University and a senior fellow with the Cato Institute’s Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives, credits bitcoin with introducing a remarkable technological breakthrough in money. However, he argues that price volatility is one of its major shortcomings. This may be "baked in," given the fixed supply, limiting its appeal in the face of more stable fiat currencies. Show support appreciated: 35iDYDYqRdN2x6KGcpdV2W1Hy3AjGje9oL Matthew and Fernando interview Dr. Lawrence White, professor of economics at George Mason University and senior fellow at the Cato Institute. This is a continuation of sorts of our very first episode/guest with Dr. George Selgin (who has worked closely with Dr. White over the years, and originally studied under him). Dr. White is an expert in monetary and banking history. He begins with a broad overview of fractional reserve banking, his views according to the modern free banking school, and their differences with 100% reserve Austrian economists. We discuss the development of monies over time, and the various reasons why Bitcoin diverges from this blueprint, such as its prior, non-monetary use cases and fixed supply. We explore why academic experts look askance at Bitcoin. Dr. White gives a primer on the economy and banking reserves through the lenses of a gold standard, fiat standard, and bitcoin standard. We talk a bit about the current global financial system, and the optimistic (yet cautious) role he sees for Bitcoin in it. We conclude with the archetype of "Blockchain Dan" (a path which Fernando and Matthew are arguably on), and reflections from Dr. White on the monetary enthusiasm of undergraduates over the years. Finally, he reveals he is working on a new book comparing gold and bitcoin! Join Russ Roberts as he interviews George Mason University economics professor Lawrence H. White about Renewing the Search for a Monetary Constitution — a new Cato book White has coedited with Victor J. Vanberg and Ekkehard Köhler.Despite their substantial independence and discretionary powers, central banks have generally failed to achieve their goals of maintaining either low and stable inflation or tolerably low unemployment. Many blame monetary discretion for this failure, noting that such discretion tempts central bankers to engage in monetary "fine tuning" that ends up fueling booms and busts, leaving declared objectives to fall by the wayside. Should monetary authorities be reined in by a constitution? If so, how might this be done successfully? The essays in Renewing the Search for a Monetary Constitution, by Lawrence White and others, address these and other crucial questions. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Federal Reserve's sometimes-controversial program of quantitative easing, or QE2, comes to an end in 15 days. Under the program, the Fed bought $600 billion in U.S. treasury bonds, in an effort to keep interest rates low and spur economic growth. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke gave QE2 tepid support at his news conference last April."We were very clear from the beginning that while we thought this was an important step, this was not going to be a panacea, that it was only going to turn the economy in the right direction," he said. Was Bernanke right? Did QE2 turn the economy in the right direction?Lawrence White, Professor of Economics at NYU's Stern School of Business, said yes. "There was more lending, the banks were not just sitting on the cash. They were out-lending more than otherwise would have been the case," he said. "I think the economy would have been in more serious difficulties had the QE2 not happened."White backs up his case, and speculates on what may happen, now that QE2 is coming to an end. MarketsStocks ended sharply lower, as unrest in Greece further destabilized global financial markets. Major indexes had their biggest drop since June 1. The Dow dumped 179 points, to close below 12,000 for the second time in two weeks, at 11,897. The S&P 500 dropped 22 points, to close at 1,265. The NASDAQ shed 47 points, to 2,631.

George Selgin, of the University of Georgia, talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about whether the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913 has been a boon or a bust for the U.S. economy. Drawing on a recent paper by William Lastrapes and Lawrence White recently released by the Cato Institute, "Has the Fed Been a Failure?" Selgin argues that the Fed has done poorly at two missions often deemed to justify a central bank: lender of last resort and smoother of the business cycle. Selgin makes the case that avoiding bank runs and bank panics does not require a central bank and that contrary to received wisdom, it is hard to argue that the Fed has smoothed the business cycle. Additional topics discussed include whether the Fed has the information to do its jobs well, the role of the Fed in moral hazard, and the potential for the gold standard to outperform the Fed.
