In part one of this two-part interview, trumpeter, composer, and 2024 NEA Jazz Master Terence Blanchard speaks about his deep musical roots in New Orleans and how the city's rich traditions shaped his artistry. He reflects on growing up in a household filled with music, his early piano lessons, and the pivotal moment when he switched to trumpet after hearing Alvin Alcorn. Blanchard discusses the educators who had a lasting impact on him, including Roger Dickerson and Ellis Marsalis, and his formative experiences at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and Rutgers University. He also shares stories of touring with Lionel Hampton as a teenager, learning the ropes of the jazz world, and his time with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he honed his skills as a composer and bandleader. Blanchard also talks about forming a quintet with Donald Harrison and their commitment to innovation, as well as launching his solo career in the early '90s. He describes his unexpected entry into film composition, starting with Mo' Better Blues, and how that led to a decades-long collaboration with Spike Lee. Blanchard reflects on the challenges and rewards of storytelling through music. Stay tuned for part two of my conversation with Terence Blanchard, where he discusses his work in opera, his ongoing exploration of sound with his current band, taking on the role of artistic director of SFJAZZ, and his role as an educator mentoring the next generation of musicians.

Альбом продолжает Why Not? ©️ 2023 Smoke Sessions Eddie Henderson - trumpet Donald Harrison - alto saxophone George Cables - piano & Fender Rhodes Gerald Cannon - bass Lenny White - drums Mike Clark - drums on "Scorpio Rising" Recorded on September 13, 2022 at Sear Sound Studio C, New York City Produced by Paul Stache & Damon Smith Recorded, Mixed & Mastered by Chris Allen Assisted by Andrew Kochinka СЛУШАТЬ АЛЬБОМ - https://album.link/i/1695966843 Предыдущий альбом Shuffle and Deal - https://t.me/discor/5715 Лучший трек альбома в плей-листе JAZZ по-русски 7 на AppleMusic и Spotify Поставь лайк ❤️ и подпишись на канал JAZZ по-русски https://t.me/discor #jazz --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message
Free tickets to see Judith at the Jazz Cafe London on Monday 24th of July. www.judithowen.nethttps://www.instagram.com/judithowenmusichttps://twitter.com/judithowenJudith Owen, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, and musical theatre, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. Born into an overtly musical Welsh family, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music, ballet, theatre, and the fine arts. Owen was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved (the mixture would become her signature sound). Owen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/ jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at Ronnie Scotts. The latest iteration of Owen began with the arrival of her 13th album, Come On & Get It. The project is rooted in her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers - Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee - whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (along with Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The album was recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans - the city Owen now calls home - with a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis, Evan Christopher, Ricardo Pascal and many more. The result is the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project. With the London Times calling it ‘one of the most joyous releases of the year', and having garnered support from flagship Jazz radio stations Jazz FM in the UK, TSF in France, and plays across NPR stations in the US, the album has already reached over a million streams on Spotify. Owen kicked off 2023 performing to thrilled audiences in Europe with sold out shows in both Paris and Milan. Accompanied by her All Star New Orleans band ‘the Gentlemen Callers', Owen's live shows are an ‘exercise in confidence' as she “lights up the room with her red hair and her charisma.” “In a snap of her fingers, she takes her .. audience with her, and dictates the tempo to her musicians with a naturalness that is almost divine.” [Toute la Culture] Owen will be on the road for much of 2023 starting with shows in New Orleans this May, before taking a 5 night residency at The McKittrick in New York. She returns to Europe this summer for a series of festival dates and a headline show promoted by Jazz FM at London's Jazz Cafe, before touring across the US in the fall. Judith Owen is co-creator and co-host of the annual “Christmas Without Tears” charity variety show, alongside husband Harry Shearer, that has featured guests including Steven Merchant, Tim Minchin, Catherine O'Hara, and many others. New Orleans is once again gearing up to overhaul its laws governing short-term rentals, like those listed on platforms like Airbnb. And City Hall is under a fast-approaching deadline to pass new rules, set by a federal court. WWNO's New Orleans reporter Carly Berlin tells us what changes might be in store for the city's short-term-rental industry. This Saturday, New Orleans will host the 2023 Miss Universe pageant where representatives from 165 countries will take to the runway to compete for the crown. But last month in Las Vegas, a different kind of pageant just wrapped up. One where the runway is replaced by a stable, and the crown, replaced by a cowgirl hat. Louisiana Considered's Alana Schreiber spoke with Miss Rodeo Louisiana 2022, Sydney Albritton, about her recent competition in Vegas, and what it takes to be a rodeo queen. Each week, American Routes brings you Shortcuts, a sneak peek at the upcoming show. This week, the show comes from Marigny Studios with jazz saxophonist Donald Harrison, who spoke to Nick Spitzer about growing up in New Orleans and putting his own stamp on modern jazz. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Patrick Madden. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our digital editor is Katelyn Umholtz. Our engineers are Garrett Pittman and Aubry Procell. You can listen to Louisiana Considered Monday through Friday at 12:00 and 7:30 pm. A true collaboration and melting pot of influences from around the World, that came together and formed one of the world's most unique cultural jewels. It is a wholly unique, worldwide collaboration that has resulted in an exceptional musical genre never before heard. Influences came from many places: Cuba, South America, Africa, Europe, Canada, America. All contributed to the blending and shaping of a musical genre that is rich in culture and heritage. We, as Americans, are the conservators of this unique cultural phenomenon. The film will highlight 20 to 25 new songs, combining multiple generations of New Orleans musicians. Legacy musicians will collaborate with stars of today and students from the Tipitina's foundation, under the guidance and tutelage of Donald Harrison. This film shows that New Orleans music has always been a collaboration of intergenerational, interracial, intercontinental and genderless effort.New Orleans music includes the creation and influences of American jazz and jazz musicians and the introduction of unique instruments, story songs and life's hardships from around the world.Award winning filmmaker/director/producer/musician Martin Shore started his career as a musician. Transcendent saxophonist talks about learning the secret tribal culture of New Orleans from his father and being taken in and raised by his musical elders like Roy Haynes when he first moved to New York.
Back in the early 70s, drummer Mike Clark and bassist Paul Jackson were best friends living in East Oakland, playing flatbed gigs at Black Panther rallies, and generally raising hell. Cooking was not their forte, so the barbecue joint next door became a hangout. Mrs. Jones (of Everett and Jones) asked them to write a song to promote the spot, and they came up with the first version of ‘God Made Me Funky.' Bill Summers worked with Jackson at the local record store, and he jumped at an opportunity to open a show for Herbie Hancock in the Bay Area. He got the call to audition for Herbie's band, joining Herbie for the album “Headhunters“ and many more. Hancock took a new turn in the 70s, handpicking a new band and sound that would ‘take some more of the earth and feel a little more tethered.' The result was the first platinum-selling Jazz album in history. The lineup on that first album: Bennie Maupin, Paul Jackson, Harvey Mason, and Bill Summers. Mike Clark replaced Mason afterward, and the lineup continued on several key Herbie Hancock releases such as “Thrust” and “Flood.”Mike Clark and Bill Summers are two of a kind - they share a love for music that never dies. The pair kept The Headhunters alive, releasing two albums “Survival of the Fittest” in 1975 and “Straight From The Gate” in 1977, with Herbie as a featured guest. The chemistry between them is undeniable: They have persevered for over 40 years through industry setbacks, the death of band members, and more, to stay true to their mission with the same energy and zeal that the music demands. “We're not in a gym, this isn't a competition… this is art. What Bill and I and The Headhunters do is experience the moment and explore. After the count, we're in that moment, and there is no other. This is an act of passion, of love for humanity, and for our planet.” -Mike Clark“We live this every day. We have some secrets to give to the youth of the world. We're not musicians, we are physicians - we heal people.” - Bill Summers11 years after their last release, The Headhunters are set to release “Speakers In The House,” a new full-length album featuring Summers, Clark, NEA Jazz master Donald Harrison, Stephen Gordon, bassist Reggie Washington, and organist Jerry Z. The album also features Scott Roberts and Fode Sissoko on kora. The Headhunters spirit is alive and well on the album, which fuses the band's African and New Orleans influences with their ever-present technical jazz-funk, rooted in music history and growing in the present moment. ‘We've always made a statement as The Headhunters, and I'm looking at our longevity. Every time we've dropped notes on the wax, it has value and can influence people and change lives.” - Bill Summers“Speakers In The House” is set for release on November 4, 2022.Lean more about Lyte.Find more great podcasts from Osiris Media, the leading storyteller in music. Donald Harrison, Jr. may have been named a 2022 NEA Jazz Master for his advocacy work, but this hard-swinging improvisational saxophonist is also a brilliant player as evidenced by his performances and recordings with musicians like Ron Carter Terence Blanchard, Miles Davis Lena Horne, Eddie Palmieri the Notorious B.I.G., and the powerhouse jazz group the Cookers. Yet, Harrison's passion for preserving and celebrating the music and culture of his hometown New Orleans is unmatched. He founded the Congo Square Nation Afro-New Orleans Cultural Group to honor the cultures brought from Africa that found root in New Orleans and then traveled the world. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Harrison, who had been a dedicated teacher and mentor for young musicians, increased his activism and worked tirelessly to help musicians remain in the city. An intentional and avid student of some of the jazz greats, Harrison has devoted himself to passing down the lessons he's learned to younger musicians. And he has mentored some extraordinary jazz artists including Jon Batiste, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Trombone Shorty, and Esperanza Spaulding. And in this podcast, Harrison talks about it all—from the importance of Congo Square to New Orleans and to jazz, to his playing with and learning from Art Blakey and Roy Haynes, his commitment to learning music from all the eras of jazz and passing that knowledge along to his students, and, of course, his thoughts about the music itself. Billy Harper has had a pretty incredible career. He was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1968. He played with Max Roach. He was part of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band and the Gil Evans big band, and because of those connections he got to play on a Louis Armstrong album. He was on Lee Morgan's final studio album, recorded in 1971. And he's had a solo career since the early Seventies, making legendary albums like Capra Black for the Strata-East label and Black Saint for…well, for Black Saint. It was their first release, and they named the label after it!Since about 2008, Harper has been a member of the Cookers, a group led by trumpeter David Weiss that also features Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Donald Harrison or Craig Handy on alto sax, George Cables — who's been on this podcast — on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. All of those guys have long careers as leaders, but when they come together, playing music from their back catalogs and new material, they're really amazing. I've seen them live twice and it's just astonishing to watch absolute masters get up there and deliver the way they do.I really had a good time talking to Billy Harper. In this interview, we talk about the Texas tenor sax tradition, we talk about his time with Lee Morgan, we talk about the Cookers, about his solo work, about how to teach improvisation, and a bunch of other things. Maintaining the integrity of temperature-sensitive products, especially pharmaceuticals, during distribution requires refrigerated warehouses and trucks. Extending the cold chain to air adds another layer of complexity. Envirotainer was one of the early companies that years ago began providing insulated containers with cooling properties. Since then the technology has evolved. Envirotainer's Donald Harrison joins Air Cargo Editor Eric Kulisch to discuss the latest advances in refrigeration of air cargo containers and tracking in-transit temperature deviations, the COVID vaccines distribution and the logistics of leasing and repositioning containers around the world.Follow FreightWaves on Apple PodcastsFollow FreightWaves on SpotifyMore FreightWaves Podcasts

Theron and Tom sit down backstage to talk about the life and legacy of drummer Ralph Peterson Jr., as well as the art behind composing music. Ralph Peterson Jr. sadly passed away on March 1, 2021, at the age of 58 after a six-year battle with cancer. Peterson was a drummer, bandleader, composer and educator who built a 40-year career after emerging in the 1980s as part of a peer group that came to be known as the Young Lions for their work around the resurgence of acoustic hard bop. On this week's @EchoChamberFP we bring you Spanish romance, a music documentary, and a shuddering indie horror. As well as news on this year's BFI Flare Festival. Dani de la Orden directs 'Crazy About Her' (Loco Por Ella). Which tells the story of how Adri (Álvaro Cervantes) and Carla (Susana Abaitua) meet one night at a bar and have an incredible time together. It was only meant to be one night, but Adri can't stop thinking about Carla, so tracks her down. Problem is, she's a patient at a residential hospital and the only way he can see her, is if he becomes a patient too! Some hail Christopher Wallace (aka The Notorious B.I.G., aka BIG Poppa, aka Biggie) the King of New York, the greatest rapper alive, whether you believe this or not, he blazed a path for defining moment in time. But what lead him to the rap game, how did he develop, who did he hold dear? 'Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell' attempts to pull back the curtain and give us a glimpse into the early years of a young Wallace through rare behind-the-scenes footage and the testimonies of his closest friends and family. 'Lucky' is the new film from Natasha Kermani (director) and Brea Grant (writer & star) on Shudder TODAY! There is one thing that can be said about Ron Carbo “Intelligent.” It is motivating to many individuals to see an African American pave the way for others, but especially in the entertainment community. Ronnie “Ron” Carbo, raised by his mother Marian Carbo and Grandmother Almena Lane grew up in the 7th ward in the great city of New Orleans, La. He spent his teenage years developing his skills as a musician, dancer and as an athlete. While attending Marion Abramson High School, he also attended the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, which at the time was filled with talents like Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Reginald Veal, Donald Harrison and Harry Connick Jr. Although he had a rigorous schedule, Ron found time to gig with numerous local bands as well as participate on a number of sports teams. After graduation from high school, Ron attended Grambling State University to study Music Education and marched in the world famous “Tiger Marching Band.” Upon completion of his first year, Ron was persuaded by life long friend Reginald Veal (bassist for Wynton Marsalis) to transfer to Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. to study with world renowned jazz musician Alvin Baptiste. At Southern, Ron participated in jazz ensemble and the “Human Juke Box” which was another famous marching band from an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities). Although both Grambling and Southern had wonderful music programs, Ron’s desire for something more than a career in music education led him to Boston, MA in 1986 were he attended Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee Ron studied Film Scoring and Music Production and Engineering and acquired a Bachelor of Music degree. In 1989, Ron pursued former Berklee professor, Greg McPherson who had recently resigned from Berklee to work for Maurice Starr as a producer and songwriter for the super boy band New Kids on the Block, for a job doing anything in the studio. This went on for about eight months until that call finally came. It was a position at the House of 2 Hits Recording Studio were artist such as New Kids on the Block, Perfect Gentleman and New Edition recorded their projects, but there was a minor problem. It was a janitor’s position. Although disappointed, Ron accepted the position under the advisement of McPherson. Over the next six months, Ron performed his janitorial duties during the day but because he was the janitor, he had keys to the studio, which allowed him the opportunity to stay after hours. Ron would stay far into the night reading equipment manuals, practicing recording techniques that he observed in sessions during the day and continued to develop his producing and songwriting skills.

Support us here: Secondlinearts.org Connect with us: https://www.instagram.com/secondlinearts/ https://www.instagram.com/roderickpaulin/ RODERICK PAULIN FULL BIO Roderick Paulin is one of the most soulful, versatile and accomplished saxophonists in New Orleans. That status has been understood by musicians for years now, and when an artist as experienced, astute – and not prone to hyperbole – as great New Orleans singer Germaine Bazzle says of Roderick Paulin, as she recently did with unabashed enthusiasm, “I just love the way he plays” – or awardwinning composer and educator Roger Dickerson adds, “Roderick is quite special, truly creative – he was one of my ‘top students' at SUNO (Southern University New Orleans)” – those are cues for the rest of us to take note of the talents of Roderick Paulin. If the name Paulin sounds familiar, there's a reason for that – Roderick is the twelfth of the thirteen children – ten boys, three girls – of legendary New Orleans bandleader Ernest “Doc” Paulin and his wife Betty. “Doc” Paulin – who passed away in 2007 five months after his 100th birthday – led bands on the streets of New Orleans for over 70 years. He insisted that the musicians in his bands adhere to certain standards: show up on time – and arrive dressed in the traditional brass band attire of white shirt, black pants and tie, well-shined black shoes and band cap. “Doc” Paulin also gave many young players their start – a “Doc” Paulin gig was often a player's first paying job, and many who got started with “Doc” have gone on to musical prominence – clarinetist Dr. Michael White, saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr. and trumpeter Gregg Stafford among them. Six of “Doc” and Betty Paulin's ten sons elected to pursue music professionally, and they have worked together for many years now as the Paulin Brothers Brass Band. Roderick Paulin grew up in these musically-rich surroundings, and remembers, even before he started playing alto sax in the fourth grade, daydreaming about someday standing in front of an orchestra and conducting it. Roderick was so intent on getting started learning the alto, in fact, that when his fourth grade band director announced on a Friday that the following Monday he would finally distribute the instruments the students had chosen to play, Roderick walked to the man's house on Saturday, camped out on his front porch all day, and knocked on his door multiple times in hopes of getting his hands on “his” saxophone a couple of days early. To no avail, as it turned out, but he was playing – and loving it – soon enough. Just two years later Roderick played his first gig with his dad's band, subbing for a saxophonist who cancelled at the last minute, but not without some trepidation. “I was worried,” Roderick recalls, “because I only knew maybe two and a half songs – but my dad told me, ‘just use your ear, you'll be fine' – and I got through it okay.” From that point on Roderick made gigs with the “Doc” Paulin band and others, continued to play in school bands, and came up with a way to teach himself more about a side of music he was increasingly drawn to, modern jazz. Community radio station WWOZ featured a three-hour modern jazz program each weekday morning – and Roderick regularly loaded up an older brother's two-cassette jambox with a pair of 90 minute cassette tapes, taped the ‘OZ show – then listened to it when he got home from school. He'd often play along as he listened, and sometimes try to transcribe a solo or whole tune, all the while sharpening his ear and adding to his repertoire. After high school, Roderick studied music at Southern University New Orleans (SUNO), coming under the guidance of two of New Orleans' most able music educators, saxophonist Edward “Kidd” Jordan, and the previously mentioned pianist and composer Roger Dickerson. Their counsel gave Roderick a clear understanding of just how much work – and the sort of work – he'd have to do to get where he wanted to be as a player and all... Support this podcast
Stephen Gordon's bio "I fell in love with all the sounds I heard as a child, so I pursued them" says Drummer/Pianist/Composer STEPHEN GORDON of Charlotte, N.C. - "Rather it was Gospel music at church, Funk and Motown with my Dad, Rock and Metal with my friends, Swing or European Classical literature with my peers and colleagues - I did it all." From the age of 4 years old, it became apparent that young Stephen would emerge into the world bringing forth sound, art, visual perspectives and living melodies to all that he pursued. Through the piano, taking lessons from the age of 5 with many teachers of different perspectives at the guidance of his parents and family, Stephen began playing the trumpet at age 12, which ventured into all brass, woodwinds, and eventually the drums and percussion. "They wanted to expand the Mass Choir at church, so my Dad and I became the rhythm section - That will always be my favorite rhythm section: Me and my Dad." From traditional and contemporary Gospel music, Stephen began sitting in and eventually gigging around Charlotte as a drummer and a keyboardist. "It was the Swing that I heard that I wanted to pursue. When I saw Terence Blanchard Sextet live at 15 years old, I said - Yeah, that's what I want to do; Swing." This path would lead Stephen to graduate high school from Northwest School of The Arts in Charlotte, N.C. and pursue touring and traveling internationally/nationally. "I got so many opportunities to travel with the choir, that when it came to gigging and touring with bands and my friends, I didn't see a difference; I was still going after that sound." These opportunities would lead to Stephen traveling and living in many different places and playing with some of the musicians and educators pushing the forefront of this music - pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jr., drummer Mike Clark, organist Joey DeFrancesco, trombonist Wayne Henderson, trombonist Fred Wesley, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., percussionist Bill Summers, drummer/vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist Aaron Goldberg, trumpeter Bobby Shew, trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Raymond Williams, Sr., bassist Roland Guerin, Poet Abidune Olyewole (The Last Poets), trombonist Tyrone Jefferson - to name a few. Stephen has performed in venues such as Tchaichovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia, The National Concert Hall in Taipei City, Taiwan, Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, The Kursk Philharmonia in Kursk, Russia, Lincoln Center in New York, New York, Ronnie Scott's in London, England, C Venues in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Village Vanguard, The Blue Note and The Jazz Standard in New York, New York, Blues Alley in DC, Babylon in Istanbul, Turkey, The North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, and many other great venues across the world. Beside playing and touring, recording and teaching have been prospects for Stephen to share in his talents and learn and grow as a musician and as a person. As Stephen resides in Charlotte, N.C., you may catch him all over the world on any given day, swinging and grooving. For all info, check out www.stephengordonmusic.com, as well as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram! This great band comprising a groups of living veterans of Jazz music is one of the great working bands of today. Working bands are rare in this day and age but this band tours the world playing in clubs and doing concerts. They play a great repertoire that comes from the members of the band and they have a wonderful collective spirit much like Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from yesteryear. The organizer and the "brains" behind the band is it's youngest member, trumpeter David Weiss. The personal are all long time veterans of the contemporary Jazz scene of the last 60 odd years. Along with Weiss on trumpet is another major voice, Eddie Henderson, Tenor saxophonist Billy Harper is a powerhouse as is it's newest member New Orleans born alto saxophone master Donald Harrison. Piano great George Cables is superb and bassist Cecil McBee has walked with the giants of Jazz as has drummer Billy Hart. The Cookers are a real band and are living proof that Jazz music can still swing, sound fresh and have real blues inflection and not sound cold and academic. These men play from their minds and their souls. "Time and Time Again" is their latest musical statement and it's worth your time.

By Rob Hochschild October 18, 2013 With influences that range from Louis Armstrong to Radiohead's Thom Yorke, trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah '05 is not only on a jazz innovator, he's a musician whose unique vision makes him a must-listen pioneer no matter what you think your preferences are. His music combines New Orleans stomp, indie rock guitar, unforgettable melodies, and social commentary. His latest album, Christian aTunde Adjuah, is a double album so packed with ideas that you may be tempted to take a break halfway through just to absorb what you've been hearing. Only 30, Scott aTunde Adjuah has already released seven albums as a leader, and played on dozens as a sideman. He headlined at last month's Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival, and took the time while he was in town to chat about his latest recording, the current state of the industry, and the myriad ways the culture of his hometown New Orleans is evolving these days. He also reflected on a master class and clinic he gave for Berklee students while in Boston. Although he left Berklee years ago, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah—whose uncle Donald Harrison also attended the college—remains close to the college community, often referring to the people on campus as his "family." MAGNETIZEDTerence Blanchard (trumpet) is one of the most important musician/composer/band leaders of his generation. His emotionally moving and technically refined playing is considered by many jazz aficionados to recall earlier jazz trumpet styles. Born March 13, 1962, in New Orleans, the only child to parents Wilhelmina and Joseph Oliver Blanchard, a part-time opera singer and insurance company manager, the young Blanchard was encouraged by his father, Joseph Oliver, to learn to play the piano. In the third grade he discovered jazz trumpet when a big band, featuring Alvin Alcorn on trumpet, played at a school assembly. In his teens Blanchard attended the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts, where he studied and played with saxophonist Donald Harrison. While performing with Lionel Hampton's big band, he studied for two years at Rutgers University under the tutelage of Paul Jeffrey and Bill Fielder. In 1982 Blanchard replaced Wynton Marsalis under his recommendation in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, working in that band up to 1986 as lead soloist and musical director. He then co-led a prominent quintet with saxophonist Donald Harrison, recording seven albums for the Concord, Columbia, and Evidence record labels in five years, including a stirring in-concert tribute to the Eric Dolphy/Booker Little ensemble. In the '90s, Blanchard became a leader in his own right, recording for the Columbia label, performing on the soundtracks to Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and Mo' Better Blues, and composing the music for Lee's film Jungle Fever. In fact, Blanchard has written the score for every Spike Lee film since 1991, including Malcolm X, Clockers, Summer of Sam, 25th Hour, Inside Man, and the Hurricane Katrina documentary When the Levees Broke for HBO. With over 40 scores to his credit, Blanchard and Mark Isham are the most sought-after jazz musicians to ever compose for film. In the fall of 2000, Blanchard was named artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Keeping up with his love of live performance and touring, Blanchard also maintains a regular studio presence, recording his own original music for the Columbia, Sony Classical, and Blue Note labels. Albums include The Billie Holiday Songbook (1994), Romantic Defiance (1995), The Heart Speaks (1996), the acclaimed Wandering Moon (2000), Let's Get Lost (2001), Bounce (2003), and especially Flow (2005), which was produced by pianist Herbie Hancock and received two Grammy nominations. Blanchard has been nominated for 11 Grammys and has won four in total, including awards for New York Scene with Blakey (1984) and the soundtrack A Tale of God's Will in 2007. In 2005, Blanchard was part of McCoy Tyner's ensemble that won the Grammy in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category for Illuminations. A quintessential sideman as well as leader, he has worked with prominent jazz players including Cedar Walton, Abbey Lincoln, Joanne Brackeen, Jay McShann, Ralph Peterson, Ed Thigpen, J.J. Johnson, Toots Thielemans, the Olympia Brass Band, Stevie Wonder, Bill Lee, Ray Brown, Poncho Sanchez, Dr. Billy Taylor, Dr. John, Lionel Loueke, Jeff Watts, and many others. Scarecrow Press published his autobiography, Contemporary Cat. By April of 2007, the Monk Institute announced its Commitment to New Orleans initiative, which included the relocation of the program to the campus of Loyola University in New Orleans, spearheaded by Blanchard. During 2007, the Monterey Jazz Festival named Blanchard Artist-in-Residence, and the festival formed a 50th Anniversary All-Stars ensemble featuring trumpeter James Moody, Benny Green, Derrick Hodge, Kendrick Scott, and Nnenna Freelon. In 2008, Blanchard helped scored the hit film Cadillac Records. Signing with Concord Jazz in 2009, he released Choices -- recorded at the Ogden Museum of Art in Blanchard's hometown of New Orleans -- at the end of that summer. In 2011, he paid tribute to the innovative Afro-Cuban recordings of Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo by teaming up with Latin jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez for the studio album Chano y Dizzy! In 2012, Blanchard returned to his film work by scoring the soundtrack to director George Lucas' WWII action/drama Red Tails.“I’ve always believed that in life, what you keep in your mind is what you draw to yourself.” That’s how trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchardexplains the title of his 20th album, Magnetic, which finds a stunning variety of sounds and styles pulled together by the irresistible force of Blanchard’s vision. That credo stems directly from Blanchard’s personal faith; raised in the Christian church, he has turned in recent years to Buddhism after meditating with Herbie Hancock while on the road with the legendary pianist. The idea of a spiritual magnetism “is a basic concept in any type of religion,” he says. “Both Christianity and Buddhism have forms of meditation - one’s called prayer and one’s called chanting. But it’s all about drawing on those things to help you attain enlightenment in your life at the same time that you’re trying to give back to the community.”Magnetic gives expression to that belief through the combined voices of Blanchard’s always-scintillating quintet. Its latest incarnation brings together longtime members Brice Winston (saxophone) and Kendrick Scott (drums) with pianist Fabian Almazan, who made his debut with the group on its 2009 album Choices, and its newest member, 21-year-old bass prodigy Joshua Crumbly. In addition, they’re joined by a trio of remarkable special guests: master bassist Ron Carter, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, and guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke. The vast array of approaches undertaken by that ensemble is striking, from the blistering bop of “Don’t Run” to the fragile ballad “Jacob’s Ladder;” the psychedelic electronic haze of “Hallucinations” to the urgent edginess of “Another Step.” As Blanchard says, “It’s a wide range of musical ideas that come together through the efforts of the guys in the band.”Magnetic marks Blanchard’s return to Blue Note Records, which last released A Tale of God’s Will, his triumphant 2007 requiem for his home city, New Orleans, in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. That harrowingly emotional song cycle is just one of many large-scale projects Blanchard has undertaken in recent years. Since first writing music for Spike Lee’s 1990 jazz-set movie Mo’ Better Blues, Blanchard has become a renowned film composer with over 50 scores to his credit, most recently the WWII drama Red Tails for producer George Lucas. This summer, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Jazz St. Louis will combine forces to premiere Blanchard’s first opera, Champion, an “Opera in Jazz” based on the story of the gay boxing champion Emile Griffith. This follows his recent score for Emily Mann’s Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. After the broad scope of such lofty undertakings, returning to a small group setting can be a challenge. “You get accustomed to having so many different colors at your disposal,” he says. “So I try to figure out a way to have as much diversity in everything that we play, the same expansive color palette as when you have an orchestra and voices.”One way that Blanchard expands his palette on Magnetic is through the use of electronics, creating an overdriven, electric guitar-like sound for his horn during “Pet Step Sitter’s Theme Song” or brewing the mind-altering atmospherics of “Hallucinations.” The latter tune, though titled by Blanchard’s 14-year-old daughter, also touches on the lifelong spiritual search evoked by the album-opening title track and “Central Focus,” which was originally recorded twenty years ago on Blanchard’s album Simply Stated. “When chanting for meditation,” he says, “you can have those moments of reflection that will bring new ideas to you. Some people may not call them hallucinations, but I think they’re all related in some fashion.”Not every tune comes from such profound motives. The hard-bopping “Don’t Run” was written solely with the intention of allowing the band to joust with Ravi Coltrane’s soprano and Ron Carter’s mighty bass runs. The title was inspired by a taunt from Carter to Blanchard, asking only half-jokingly when the trumpeter would call on the legendary bassist’s services. “Stop running from me, man,” Blanchard recalls him saying, and when Carter speaks, you listen.Coltrane’s contributions, which also include a taut, powerhouse turn on tenor for “Pet Step Sitter’s Theme Song,” came about simply because Blanchard was blown away by the saxophonist’s latest album, Spirit Fiction. “Ravi has developed a style and a sound that’s very unique,” Blanchard explains. “It’s an incredible feat given who his father was and what instrument his father played. But his being on my record has nothing to do with any of that; his being on my record is simply due to the fact that I love the way he plays.”The same goes for Benin-born Lionel Loueke, who first came to prominence through Blanchard’s quintet before becoming widely renowned as one of the most innovative guitarists and vocalists in modern jazz. “He’s a very unique talent,” Blanchard says. “Lionel always brings a certain spirit and energy to any project that he’s a part of.”Blanchard also readily sings the praises of his core group, which has been evolving over two years together to reach the deeply attuned point at which Magnetic finds them. “I’ve always appreciated the artistry of Brice and Kendrick,” he says of the band’s two veterans. “They’ve very seriously committed to developing their own unique styles of playing.”Of newcomer Crumbly, he says, “Josh is a young guy who’s very talented and brings a lot to the group.” And of Almazan, he continues, “Fabian has been growing by leaps and bounds. His harmonic knowledge has taken the band in interesting directions and he colors things in ways that I think are very fresh and forward-thinking.”So enamored is the bandleader of Almazan’s talents that he affords the pianist a solo spotlight, the captivating “Comet.” Almazan, Blanchard says, “plays with such grace and beauty. We did five or six takes and all of them were so beautiful that it was a hard to choose just one.”Each member of the group provides their own contributions to the album: Crumbly, the lovely and delicate “Jacob’s Ladder;” Scott, the forceful, rhythmically intense “No Borders Just Horizons;” Winston the lithe and intricate “Time To Spare;” and Almazan an “emotional roller coaster” dedicated to his mother, “Pet Step Sitters Theme Song,” which is later reprised as “Another Step.” “We had so much fun playing that tune that we just couldn’t leave it,” Blanchard explains. I thought it showed the diverse nature of the group, when you see the directions that it goes into, totally different from the first take.”In his role as mentor to his younger bandmates, Blanchard takes the mantle from his own onetime mentor, Art Blakey. Stressing the importance for young musicians to compose as well as improvise, Blanchard recalls the legendary drummer’s advice: “Art Blakey told us that composition was the path to finding your own voice. If you improvise, you don’t sit down and reflect coldly on what it is you’re playing because you’re moving so quickly onto the next thing. Whereas when you compose, you have to sit down and really contemplate what each note means and how you get from one to the next. That in itself will create a style.”Terence Blanchard’s own style continues to evolve and expand in exciting and compelling fashion. Magnetic is sure to capture listeners with an attractive power nearly impossible to resist. To Visit Terence Blanchard's website CLICK HERE
Saxophonist, composer and Mardi Gras Indian Chief Donald Harrison, Jr . started learning about Mardi Gras Indian culture firsthand and early. “The first time I put on a suit was at two years old for the Creole Wild West," Harrison said. I was a little chief of the Creole Wild West. I had on a dark blue and white suit my father made for me. I remember them running and going fast up and down in feathers, flying and singing.” He says his mother talks about how he used to play drums on his crib. "They should have gotten me a drum set instead of a saxophone," he said. "I think I have a natural affinity for rhythm.” And a thorough grounding in the powerful connection between music and dance. “One of the great things was that my mother used to make us dance the popular dances. So some kind of way that got into my psyche that you should also play music. When I started to play, it makes you want to dance.” Harrison started playing alto sax at 10 years old, and made a couple of key musical

Today, if the Wu Tang interview doesn't happen, we might actually pull something from the archives, maybe my interview with Dr. Lonnie Smith or Donald Harrison. It didn't happen. Instead we spoke to Robert H. King, former political prisoner, Angola 3, and author of the new autobiography, "From the Bottom of the Heap" (PM Press). We also spoke to Gail Shaw, MD, co-founder of itsabouttimebpp.com, an archive and educational organization dedicated to the preservation of Black Pather Party history. They updated us on Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox's cases. Plus Herman's health. I was to speak to Christian Scott, musician currently in town at Yoshi's Jack London Square, and we'll have to reschedule during his California Tour. The New Orleans native, is on tour with a new CD/DVD "Live at Newport," wonderful product! We closed the show with a track dedicated to Scott's dear friend, who was killed on his wedding day, "Died in Love." Friday, Dec. 5 is still up in the air. What I know for sure is we'll be speaking to someone from ASCAC regarding the conference, maybe Cecil Brown about his Pen Oakland Award. Tune in, it's always fun. I would love to have Sister Souljah on the air. She's here this weekend. We'll also be speaking with honorees and devorah major, who will deliver the key note address at Pen Oakland Awards; other guests include Peter Fitzsimon, who is curator of the Jazz Heritage Center, and the Lush Life Gallery in San Francisco, along with John Handy, muscian and scholar, Lewis Watts, photographer and professor, and Raja Rahim, vocalist. The morning show concludes with a conversation with Boots of the Coup.
