 Diane and I are back doing podcasts and we are very happy to get back at it in 2025. Our first guest for the New Year is Lee Murphy from Nova Scotia. Lee loves running longer distances, Ultramarathons and Backyard Marathons are what get Lee going. We learn how Lee started running and how it has become addictive for him, far better than what Lee was addicted to earlier on in life. His running streak of 807 consecutive days of running 10 km or more is still going strong and we can't wait to see how many days Lee will go. Lee recently ran a Backyard Ultra in Edmundston for 68 consecutive hours and he won the event, amazing. Lee is the Canadian Backyard Ultra champion after running an incredible 456 km (68 yards) at the event in October. Staying healthy and staying social is also why he loves running, as running is often where he finds time to socialize outside of a busy work and family schedule. Lee Murphy, Congressional candidate in Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware worked for Amtrak for 35 years, starting as a track layer and retiring as a conductor and locomotive train engineer on high speed trains between New York City and Washington, DC. Lee got to know “Amtrak Joe” very well over the years, and explains he is not the “every man” and took tons of jobs away from Delaware. Des photos de Joe Biden tout sourire aux côtés de la propriétaire sont affichées sur le mur. Car le candidat à la présidence fréquente les lieux depuis décennies. « Je l'ai rencontré quand il était vice-président. Il est venu déjeuner avec son équipe, raconte Ayleen Beclarian, employée depuis dix ans au Claymont Steak Shop. Il était très humble, il est entré, a fait la queue comme tout le monde. Il a parlé aux clients, a fait des photos avec eux, il était très aimable. » Joe Biden, un homme accessible et courtois, que tout le monde ou presque semble avoir croisé à Wilmington. Tyron Baily, 59 ans, est assis devant le porche de sa maison dans le quartier noir de l'ouest de la ville. Il a rencontré l'ex-vice-président lorsqu'il était employé au supermarché du quartier où vivent les Biden. « C'était mon premier boulot, je remplissais les sacs des clients. Joe Biden m'a donné cinquante dollars parce que j'avais emballé ses marchandises, et il m'a dit de continuer à faire du bon boulot. Il est proche des gens, il connaît tout le monde. C'est mon homme ! » lance Tyron, convaincu que son candidat sera élu. C'est dans la pizzéria de Gianni Esposito que Joe Biden a annoncé sa candidature à la Maison Blanche. Gianni raconte avoir perdu des clients ce jour-là du fait de l'affluence de journalistes et de photographes qui encombraient sa petite échoppe. Et il se garde bien de prendre parti dans la course à la présidence. « Mes vues politiques sont différentes de celles de Joe Biden, mais si les gens m'entendent parler, ils vont dire que je suis raciste ou fanatique. C'est l'Amérique d'aujourd'hui : tu ne peux plus exprimer ton opinion. De nos jours, quand les gens ont une opinion différente, ils deviennent ennemis. Mon business, c'est de vendre des pizzas, et je ne veux être l'ennemi de personne. Joe Biden est un homme bien. Mais est-ce que je vais voter pour lui ? Je n'en sais rien », explique le patron de la pizzéria.« Les marchés boursiers vont sombrer si Joe Biden est élu. En ce moment, les cours sont au plus haut », réagit un client. Erik Anderson, ingénieur de 29 ans, ne bronche pas en écoutant la conversation, mais une fois sorti de la pizzéria, il nous confie : « Je suis progressiste. Être de gauche aux États-Unis, c'est souffrir la plupart du temps. J'ai voté pour Bernie Sanders aux primaires, et je considère que Donald Trump est une menace sévère pour la démocratie. Je ne suis pas emballé à l'idée de voter pour Joe Biden, je ne suis pas super enthousiaste, mais je sais au moins que c'est un type décent. » La gare de Wilmington, un petit bâtiment de briques rouges surmonté d'un clocher, a été rebaptisée Joe Biden Station, car c'est ici que pendant trente-six ans Joe Biden a pris le train pour se rendre au Sénat à Washington. Il rentrait tous les soirs par le même moyen pour s'occuper de ses deux fils. C'est à cette époque que Lee Murphy, conducteur de train aujourd'hui à la retraite, a rencontré le candidat démocrate. Lee Murphy se présente aujourd'hui comme candidat républicain au congrès. « Parfois, si j'en avais besoin, Joe me proposait de me ramener en voiture chez moi depuis la gare. Dans les années 80 et 90, les gens pouvaient ne pas être d'accord, mais tout de même s'entendre et être amis. Mais ces temps sont révolus », constate-t-il avant d'assener : « Je pense que Joe est un bon père de famille, mais franchement, s'il est élu, il sera sous le contrôle des membres les plus radicaux de son parti, ce que je trouve très triste ».À Wilmington, les qualités humaines de Joe Biden sont unanimement reconnues.
