The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the second study session on Lionel Dahmer's A Father's Story. Gus was quite resistant to reading this book. We just concluded our read of Sue Klebold's memoir and an in depth examination of the 1999 Columbine tragedy. In July 1991, research chemist Lionel Dahmer was informed by the Milwaukee Police Department that they were investigating a homicide involving his son Jeffrey. Dahmer initially thought Jeffrey was a murder victim, not a murderer. He learned the grisly details of his son's crimes during the trial which he was found to be legally sane and sentenced to life imprisonment in February 1992.[6] A Father's Story runs chronologically from Jeffrey's birth until his arrest and imprisonment. Dahmer tries to figure out what made his son commit murder, practice necrophilia and cannibalism. He scrutinizes every possible contributing factor to his son's psychosis starting with himself. Dahmer judges himself a poor father because he was emotionally distant towards his son. While reflecting, he "speculates that his own youthful shyness, fascination with bombs and fears of abandonment added up to a monstrous genetic inheritance."[7] A Father's Story is a memoir written by Lionel Dahmer, father of American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. The book was published in 1994 by William Morrow and Company.

Uno squilibrato che raccoglie animali morti trovati al limitare dei boschi e ne seziona le interiora con precisione e gusto preoccupanti.Si ma, gli animali mica li uccide lui. Quindi, ancora una volta, niente di male. Piccolino, timidino… di poche parole. Però un bravo ragazzo, tutto sommato.Uno che ha dovuto imparare a cavarsela da solo perché in famiglia nessuno si è preso cura di lui. I genitori, troppo presi dai loro litigi e dalle colpe da addossare l'uno all'altro, non hanno mai trovato il tempo di ascoltarlo davvero. E pensare che di cose da dire ne avrebbe avute…Certo quel ragazzo ne ha sofferto, ma non è colpa sua. Una vittima che si è visto arrivare l'insostenibile peso della vita addosso. Nei bui meandri della sua mente qualcosa, ad un certo punto, fa capolino. È un mostro che forse c'è sempre stato, ma che raramente si è fatto sentire.La prima volta non si scorda mai, soprattutto in fatto di amore. Nel caso di Jerffrey, l'amore ha il colore del sangue. La morte richiama il piacere, una pulsione sessuale incondizionata che ne determinerà le azioni future. Il ragazzo è ormai solo da tempo: la notte vaga nei night club alla ricerca degli ultimi. Persone alle quali la polizia non da credito. Non importa se puliti o meno: sono gli ultimi. E allora Jeffrey affina la tecnica: dopo averli attirati a casa sua li droga con un medicinale soporifero. Sa che è sbagliato, che non dovrebbe farlo, ma è più forte di lui. Ha bisogno di uccidere per sentirsi appagato. Nel macabro rituale alla droga segue, immancabilmente, un film. Un paio d'ore d'attesa prima che la droga entri nel torrente ematico. Poi è l'ora delle foto ricordo. Innocenti scatti alla vittima denudata. Decine, centinaia, migliaia di foto di vittime poi disciolte nell'acido.Nell'acido vengono sciolte le parti peggiori.Le migliori il ragazzo se le mangia. Prima di tutto le cuoce perché, come sappiamo, la carne cruda se non è fresca si riempie di germi, e nemmeno un abbattitore potrebbe garantirne la salubrità.Quindi meglio arroventare tutto per bene e poi servire. Il cuore, come insegna mastro Hannibal, è la parte migliore. Arrivati a questo punto occorre chiedersi: chi era veramente Jeffrey Dahmer? Uno spietato carnefice, o una triste vittima della vita?
