It's always nice to imbibe with a companion, so this month, we're pairing up last month's “Alcohol Across Cultures” chat with a companion piece on what to do (or not do) when drinking tea and other libations across the globe. So grab your potable of choice (potent or not) and please enjoy this special reissue of our second-ever episode, “Tea & Magnetic Pole Flips”, from March 2018! (Also: It appears that the topic of magnetic pole flipping has stayed in the news even five years later!) This episode, Dean and Tom navigate the cultural dos and don'ts of drinking tea in Morocco, Japan, the U.K., and Argentina - not to mention coffee in Ethiopia, beer in China, and whiskey in Korea! And without even getting inebriated (or maybe they do, as it would explain a lot), they also broach the topic of magnetic pole flipping (not an Olympic sport) and its cultural implications. Get ready to imbibe this episode from a gourd with a silver straw, because, as we all know, “the best things in life are served in a gourd.” Subscribe now! When Captain Hoff (Steve Hoffman) tries to help startups scale their businesses, he discovers a unique pain point that people have and creates a solution for it. How can you take your service and make it a product that you can scale?"The founders of YouTube, when they started, they did not think of the big idea. They did not think, we're going to build the largest video broadcast network in the world. We're going to change how the Internet works and people consume content. They did not think that..."Steve Hoffman is the author of Make Elephants Fly and the founder of Founders Space, a global startup incubator and accelerator. He has over 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur and has helped hundreds of startups around the world grow and scale their businesses. This is Steve Hoffman's story...I'm Steve Hoffman, and I'm the author of Make Elephants Fly. I'm also the founder of Founders Space, a global startup incubator and accelerator. I've been an entrepreneur for over 25 years, and I've learned a lot about what it takes to grow a business. One of the most important things I've learned is that successful startups don't just sell a product once to customers. Instead, they use a recurring revenue model to keep customers locked into their business. This allows them to grow without being limited by the number of people they can hire. I've also learned that it's often more effective to start small and solve specific problems that you notice in your customers' process. This was the case for YouTube, which started as a video datingIn this episode, you will learn the following:1. How do successful startups achieve rapid revenue growth?2. What is the difference between productization and standardization?3. How can thinking small lead to big innovation?Resources:Steve's websiteMake Elephants FlySurviving a StartupThe Five Forces That Change EverythingConnect with Mike & Kevin:Mike's LinkedInMike's WebsiteKevin's LinkedInKevin's Website

Dean and Tom are back to talk about the use and importance of symbols across cultures, otherwise known as "going the full Robert Langdon" (you know, the main protagonist in Dan Brown's novels). Being the super symbologists they are, Dean and Tom decipher what iconic symbols have to tell us about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while also decoding symbols that have arisen from other conflicts, such as in Hong Kong, the United States, and more. We hope you'll crash some cymbals to commemorate this discussion of symbols, symbolizing a celebration of all our new 2022 episodes coming up! In the finale of their two-part gleeful gabfest, Dean and Tom continue to delight in the complexities of humor, language, and culture. Starting a small business can be scary. It's like taking a leap, but even if you're unsure where you would be landing on. Some people start a business out of pure fascination or even as a hobby. But whether you are starting a business to fulfill your passion or meeting your financial goals, you need to have a plan. Starting a small business is no easy task and can take days, if not months, to prepare. The most important aspect to have is the thrive and heart to start a small business, as, without passion, no business can succeed. In business, you are your own boss. You are making your dream a reality--or not! It takes sacrifice (sometimes your career in someone else's business), discipline, long hours, and hard work. But, with courage, passion, and dedication, a business can be the start of something big. During this pandemic, hundreds of thousands of workers were rendered unemployed. And so many took the chance of opening their own small businesses to generate income. To many, they saw the exciting opportunities to ‘create' something new--new solutions, for a new world. There's no perfect time to start a business. What matters is how motivated you are to begin a business and make an impact through that. In this podcast, Ali Lowndes shares about how they started their own business. Ali Lowndes, a designer, and maker based in Dublin, creates laser-cut acrylic jewelry, buttons, handmade greeting cards, retro headbands, and hair accessories. Here, she also talks about how the pandemic helped her business to rise. Listen to some very practical tips on how one should manage their time for their business while being a mother and wife at the same time. Ali also has some essential reminders in showing appreciation to customers. Christians often find themselves entangled in the argument against support of the LGBT community. Are Christians meant to be right winged and labelled intolerant, or should we lean more to the left and be supportive of alternative lifestyles? Getting caught up in political debates does not suit the Church well, and individual Christians need to know how they should react to people who live or support these lifestyles. The answers for all questions regarding righteous living lie in the words of Jesus; this debate is no exception.Music: "Upbeat and Inspiring," "Little Idea," and "Dream Come True" by Scott Holmes, https://scottholmesmusic.com/

World cultures expert Dean Foster and longtime friend Tom Peterson dive into bathroom habits around the world in this episode, with the act of shaving and, yes, using the toilet. Join them as they dissect the features and cultural origins of the Japanese toilet, and why perhaps it isn’t catching on in the U.S. (Or is it? No!) So relax, heat up your toilet seat, and turn down your 1812 Overture, because you’re going to want to hear this. Subscribe now! Have a cultural question or episode idea for Dean and Tom? Please scrape that gunk off your shoe before entering this episode! Dean and Tom explore shoe protocol in the home as well as New Year’s traditions across various cultures, leading them - of course - to find their hands in a bowl of Argentinian (NOT Argentine) pink underwear. This episode, Dean and Tom navigate the cultural dos and don’ts of drinking tea in Morocco, Japan, the U.K., and Argentina - not to mention coffee in Ethiopia, beer in China, and whiskey in Korea! Today, we welcome Betsy Hauser Idilbi, Co-Founder of Tech Talent South to the show. Betsy is rare success in the startup world. She's a female founder, successful raised money for her startup, and lives in Charlotte. Listening to the podcast you quickly pick up on why. She's smart, energetic, quick on her feet, and persistent. She's grown Tech Talent South from 1 city to 11 and recruited some excellent talent to her team. She's kept Tech Talent South in growth mode as industry competitors have shut down and stands poised to grow the company for years into the future. Betsy graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in journalism but knew from an early time she wanted to start something. Her time at Little Idea - which merged with Louis Foreman's Enventys - was instrumental as she learned not many people had the technical school of coding. This lead her off on an adventure that would see her launch Tech Talent South and grow it into the success it is today and will become in the future. Listen in to today's podcast to learn more about Besty and her journey including: How did she find a network of mentors and how important was it for her to have found a female mentor as well (Tana Green of Blue Bloodhound has been a huge help to Betsy)? Why was Atlanta their first location and why was Asheville their second city? The reason they expanded to 4 cities in 8 months? The role hiring the right people has played and how Betsy has tackled hiring so far, including Suzanne Speece and Darryl Jones. How does Betsy view equity as compensation for startups? What lessons has Betsy learned that she wishes she could go back and tell her ‘early founder self’? What was their strategy early on as she watched her competitors develop? Next week we dive further into our interview with Betsy and explore why now was the right time for her to raise money and more about the success that is Tech Talent South.
