The Hunks discuss the 2012 release from Australian artist, Kevin Parker.
Some bands are sprinters; they release new material with impressive speed. But other bands are more like marathon runners, taking their time with each project. Canadian indie pop group Alvvays are the latter since their new album Blue Rev is their first in five years. In this week's Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen review marathoners Alvvays' latest release (25:27) as well as Björk's mushroom-inspired LP Fossora (36:42).The biggest music news of this week was a pleasantly surprising No. 1 single. It's Steve Lacey's R&B hit "Bad Habit," which dethroned Harry Styles' long-running "As It Was" No. 1 and it seems like a very organic ascent (45:58). In other news, indie music celebrated the 10th anniversary of a majorly influential album: Tame Impala's Lonerism. While the idea of celebrating album anniversaries is a relatively new phenomenon, it does encourage younger listeners to revisit classic albums in an age when we're constantly introduced to new music (:29).This week's Recommendation Corner (53:11) has Ian urging listeners to check out his recent interview with Will Sheff and his band Okkervil River's new album Nothing Special. Steven suggests Zach Bryan, a 26-year-old singer-songwriter whose 34-song LP American Heartbreak is one of the year's most sprawling albums.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Siga no instagram: @Noizecast_ . Like We Only Go Backwards". In this episode, we'll be taking a look at Lonerism, the second studio album by Tame Impala. Tame Impala is the musical mouthpiece of Australian multi instrumentalist and experimental virtuoso Kevin Parker. After the success of his first album ‘Innerspeaker', Parker immediately began writing and recording ‘Lonerism' - a 12 track psychedelic journey into his introverted mind - where you get to see the world through his eyes, and from his perspective. Arguably a favourite among his ever-growing fan base, Lonerism was released in 2012 to global acclaim, and still stands up as one of the best albums of the decade. I have a lot of love for this album, and I'm looking forward to breaking it down with the guys. This is Lonerism, by Tame Impala - Carl Other topics include: a keyboard on the ceiling, a high-five to the back-of-the-neck, a little hypnosis, and our first ever legitimate answerphone message! On this episode I am joined by returning guest Marriah and we do a deep dive into Tame Impala's 2012 album "Lonerism".
On this second part of a two part episode, the gang examines psycadelicacy, sleep, and songs about death.
On this episode three big dawgs discuss drinking red wine and smoking spliffs as children while exploring Tame Impala's Lonerism. First friend of the pod, Rex (aka Space Phase) joins us.
Starting off their career as psychedelic explorers, the Australian band Tame Impala spent a decade subverting expectations and mutating their sound in fascinating ways, as well as being an inspiration to musicians as diverse as Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Lady Gaga. Guided by the musical prowess of Kevin Parker, the band's 2010 debut album Innerspeaker was a huge, loud guitar rock album dipped in swirling psychedelic colors. The follow-up Lonerism (2012) dialed down the guitars in favor of a more expansive style, after which Parker swerved into a poppier sound that brought in hip-hop (2015's Currents) and disco influences (2020's The Slow Rush) while upping the sugar content of the hooks. It proved to be a winning approach, and by decade's end, Parker was collaborating with some of the biggest artists on Earth (Kanye, Travis Scott) while the band was selling out stadiums and tons of records. After a long rollout that saw the band debuting new songs on Saturday Night Live in May of 2019, and a steady trickle of singles seeing the light of day as Parker continued to tinker with the album, The Slow Rush was released in early 2020, just before the band launched a worldwide tour.
Tom and Neil dive into the discography of everyone's second to third favorite Australian band and everyone's first to second favorite Kevin Parker project, Tame Impala! From the highs of Innerspeaker, Lonerism, Currents, and the Slow Rush to the lows of the period before they were making music, we tackle it all and answer the question on everyone's mind - are Impalas native to Australia? The answer may surprise you! It's no.

I lead a secretive life, I’m against the world. I feel I am apart from others even if I am socially active. Although I voice sentimentality, I am never so tight with anyone that I cannot get up and go at a moment’s notice if something more exciting comes along. “Only I will care for my needs” is my thinking and as such, when I feel my needs are not being met, I am justified in meeting anyway I see fit.

In this discussion, Ben lays out a nuanced examination of Primitivism — a “mode of aesthetic idealization that either emulates or aspires to recreate ‘primitive’ experience.”☽ In modern Western societies, the primitivist ideal is expressed though various means — a few examples being contemporary dietary fads like the “Paleo Diet,” fitness regimens like barefoot/minimalist running, radical anti-civilizational and anti- technological political philosophies (e.g. the works of anarcho-primitivist John Zerzan and the manifesto of the UNABOMBER Theodore Kaczynski) — as well as in popular films, literature, and art. Primitivist themes and aesthetics run through several popular films, most notably in James Cameron’s blockbuster film ’Avatar.’ To quote from Ben’s essay: “The plot of the film follows the tested formula of primitivist transformation. A man of civilization, in this case the paraplegic US marine Jake Sully, is sent to colonize the primitive lands beyond civilization’s perimeter only himself to ‘go primitive’ after learning of their innocent beauty and recognizing the barbarism of his own destructive civilization.”✛ Ben, in this essay and in this discussion, understands Primitivism as a reverse teleology: “Marx’s communist society or the techno-utopias of Silicon Valley are premised on transcendence. When workers own the factories or robots do the menial labor, humans will be free to pursue their inmost desires. For primitivists, humans have previously achieved this state, and our urgent project is to restore it. We are to move forward into our past; or, equally, backward into our future.”✛ What does this theme of “primitivist transformation” tell us about our current set of living arrangements in the “modern” world? What does this longing for more “primitive” forms of living and being mean within the broader scope of historical development, especially as we enter into the late stage of capitalist development on this planet? We delve into this rich subject in this episode. Ben Etherington is senior lecturer in postcolonial and world literary studies in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts and a member of the Writing and Society Research Centre. He holds honours degrees in Musicology and English from the University of Western Australia. He was awarded a General Sir John Monash Award to undertake an MPhil and PhD in English at the University of Cambridge, where he was later a Faculty of English research fellow. His publications include ‘Literary Primitivism’, the ‘Cambridge Companion to World Literature,’ and ‘Unsettled Poetics: Contemporary Australian and South African Poetry.’☯︎ ☽ Source: http://bit.ly/Primitivism ✛ Source: http://bit.ly/NewPrimitives ☯︎ Source: http://bit.ly/LARBbio Episode Notes: - Read Ben’s essay ‘The New Primitives’ here: http://bit.ly/NewPrimitives - John Zerzan’s response: http://bit.ly/ZerzanLetter - Learn about and purchase Ben’s book ‘Literary Primitivism’ here: http://bit.ly/LiteraryPrimitivism - The songs featured in this episode are “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” and “Apocalypse Dreams” by Tame Impala from the album Lonerism. - WEBSITE: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com - PATREON: http://bit.ly/LBWPATREON - DONATE: Paypal: http://bit.ly/LBWPAYPAL Ko-Fi: http://bit.ly/LBWKOFI - FOLLOW & LISTEN: SoundCloud: http://bit.ly/LBWSOUNDCLOUD iTunes: http://bit.ly/LBWITUNES Google Play: http://bit.ly/LBWGOOGLE Stitcher: http://bit.ly/LBWSTITCHER RadioPublic: http://bit.ly/LBWRADIOPUB YouTube: http://bit.ly/LBWYOUTUBE - SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook: http://bit.ly/LBWFACEBOOK Twitter: http://bit.ly/LBWTWITTER Instagram: http://bit.ly/LBWINSTA

Pete Holmes and Artie Lange are both respected and beloved stand-up comedians who appear on the HBO show Crashing. Created by Holmes and co-produced and often directed by Judd Apatow, Crashing is a semi-autobiographical sitcom about an aspiring comedian named Pete, who is so obsessed with making it as a stand-up, he neglects his put upon wife who cheats on him, leaving him homeless, pitiful, and at the mercy of more established comedians like T.J. Miller, Sarah Silverman, and Artie Lange. The cast and crew are currently shooting the second season of Crashing and the first season is now available on Blu-ray and DVD for your home viewing pleasure. I recently had the chance to travel to Brooklyn, New York for an event to promote Crashing while also benefitting REALgirl, a program that aims to “help end gender inequality by fostering the ability of girls to discover their truest selves and develop the skills, knowledge, confidence and courage they need to consistently make informed life-choices from a place of self-knowledge, self-love and strength.” So yes, there was a night of stand-up at the Bell House in Brooklyn featuring amazing sets by Pete Holmes, Artie Lange, Dov Davidoff, and Beth Stelling. Earlier that day, I caught up with Pete and Artie for a chat about Crashing. They were on a press junket so I was told I’d only have nine minutes with them. But I think because I flew down from Canada and also because we had a nice rapport, Pete bought me a bit more time. It probably helped that Pete and Artie seemed to like my long, salt and pepper hair. At least Artie liked it; Pete found it sucpicious. You’ll see. I’m a big fan of Pete and Artie’s work, both alone and together, so this was fun. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.
Episode 4 - Rachel and Fabrice endeavor to articulate the pains/gains of being alone, lonely, and isolated.

FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP32. Tame Impala. 11.07.12I’m back and I hope you’re all doing well. Thanks for sticking with me during my move and the podcast dry spell. The truth is I’ve hardly had any time to think about recording with the move. I have, however had several ideas floating around in my head. For instance I am thinking of changing the name of this podcast to Digital Spray Paint. And I am going to make the format a bit different, offering more variety, in the ways of interviews with bands, alongside phone conversations with my radio alumni, and comedian friends. With that said I am going to give you one more traditional FeedBack podcast the way it’s been since I started this little project. Also listen for a series I’m calling the 12 tracks of Christmas, that will IV drip songs throughout the month of December for your listening pleasure, as we get ready to start the new podcast format that will beguine soon after the new year. Thanks for listening now here’s the Podcast. A phone conversation with my friend recently had me thinking about how much great music comes out of Australia. With the obvious bands out of the way I posted a FaceBook comment and received several comments from you guys as well, listing a ton of iconic rock, that hails from the land down under. I’m not 100% certain of what it is they do differently there but I can say that Australia has yet to produce a rock band that disappoints me. Tame Impala is a band that popped up about two years ago with their debut record Innerspeaker, and shares an ambiance similar to America’s Interpol. The band was originally known as The Dee Dee Drums and is a c ollaboration of other indie groups fronted by Kevin Parker who also plays drums in Pond: A band that compares to other Australian notables like the Vines and Wolfmother. It’s also comprised of Tame Impala members Jay Watson and Nick Allbrook. Kevin’s drumming would show up again in his work with Mink Mussel Creek a group that was comprised of his friends in the Australian underground music scene as well as members of Tame Impala. The group started recording in 2008 but because of setbacks weren’t able to officially release their record, however in this technology age there is a way to find anything online, and the recordings were eventually released. Which is good for me because otherwise I wouldn’t have a song segue right here. There’s more to Parker than rhythm, he also shows intuition towards recording and effect pedal usage, with nearly 20 pedals in his arsenal while on stage. In an interview with UnderCover TV he elaborated on his take towards using pedals in a new way that helps create a sound that newer musicians are wishing they thought of. This past October Tame Impala released their latest full length titled Lonerism an album that embodies the atmospherical, environmentally, synth blanketed rock that fans have grown to crave. A mention of this new album by one of my FaceBook followers has me leaving you with two tracks from these guys. Go by my site WesTexasMedia.com for a full track list of this episode, check out the video for Expectation, and listen to some more poddy deliciousness.Tracks Heard on this Podcast: It’s Not Ment to Be – Tame Impala Jeremy’s Storm – Tame Impala Fantastic Explosion in Time – Pond Doesn’t the Moon Look Good Tonight – Mink Mussel Creek Expectation – Tame Impala Mind Mischief – Tame Impala Music to Walk Home By – Tame Impala
