Abbreviating names, the big dawg hours, and keeping it casual cool. Gabriel Fernandez (Levitation Room) "East Los Angeles quartet Levitation Room's floaty, cosmic songs are always a trip. Since forming nearly a decade ago, they've self-produced dizzying, otherworldly music that's connected with fellow travelers in the hallucinogenic world of outré rock music. Led by singer and guitarist Julian Porte along with founding members Gabriel Fernandez (lead guitar) and Johnathan Martin (percussion), the band has enchanted live audiences at Desert Daze and on tour with like-minded groups Post Animal and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. The band's vivid sound has found them placed on popular playlists like Modern Psychedelia and the legendary superproducer's Danger Mouse Jukebox. Their 2015 debut, “Friends,” has surpassed 18 million streams. Joined by new member Kevin Perez (bass) in 2021, Levitation Room have continued to expand their colorful, unearthly sound, a process that has culminated with the vibrant new album Strange Weather. Collaborating with former Brian Jonestown Massacre keyboardist Rob Campanella, Jason Kick (Mild High Club), and Black Crowes' Joel Robinow, Levitation Room take a new step in their story and vision with Strange Weather. The record's lyrical narratives—about love in the park, life in the city, and the fact that “The world today is such an illusion”—are appropriately steeped in '60s sonics and a dreamy, lo-fi atmosphere. It's spacey, celestial guitar music for escaping into, and “it feels just like heaven.” 'Strange Weather' will be released February 16, 2024" Excerpt from https://greenwayrecords.com/artist/levitation-room/ Levitation Room: Bandcamp: https://levitationroom.bandcamp.com/album/headspace Instagram: @levitation_room Website: https://levitation-room.com Records: https://greenwayrecords.com/artist/levitation-room/ Merch: https://churchofpickle.com/collections/levitation-room The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

For our first brand new Talkhouse episode of 2023, we've got a short but great chat with three guys from the rollicking Australian rock scene: Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Jack “Cool Breeze” Crowther, and Elliot “Dr. Love Wisdom” O'Reilly. Yes, they have excellent names, and so do their bands. Kenny-Smith is part of the super-prolific King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, which since coming together in Melbourne in 2010 has released an incredible 23 albums—three of those in October of 2022 alone. The band has built up a manic following along the way, building up a whole universe—people call it the Gizzverse—of characters and sounds that range from extended rock jams to jazz to microtonal exploration. If you're not already familiar, there's no perfect place to start, though last year's Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms, and Lava is accessible in its own way. In addition to non-stop touring and recording with King Gizz, Kenny-Smith also leads another band, The Murlocs, which put out their sixth album, Rapscallion, just last year as well. To borrow a funny line from Pitchfork, being a King Gizzard fan can feel like a full-time job, but seems like a fun one to me. Check out “Iron Lung” from that album I mentioned above with the really long name. The other two gents in this conversation, Jack Crowther and Elliot O'Reilly, are part of Babe Rainbow, another hardworking Australian band. Though not quite as busy as King Gizzard, Babe Rainbow has managed to release five full lengths in just the last five or so years as well—including one produced by a member of King Gizzard. Theirs is a slightly more focused take on psychedelic rock—no less spacey but a bit more structured. Here's “Inner Space” from their latest album, The Organic Band. In this conversation, these three friendly guys talk about recent flooding in Australia that involved some cat rescuing, as well as fashion, having babies, surfing, and lots more. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Jack Crowther, and Elliot O'Reilly for chatting. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of guys who don't know each other well, but who've crossed paths a few times over the years—most recently at the Desert Daze festival, Nick Allbrook and Josh Conway. Allbrook is the frontman of the Australian psychedelic rock band Pond, which is sort of inextricably linked with another Australian band, Tame Impala. Allbrook was actually a member of Tame for years while also playing with Pond—which includes some current members of Tame Impala. But Pond, which has been around about as long, has built a sound of its own, much more hard charging than that other band, and released a whopping nine albums of frenetic, fun, fuzzy rock. If you've never heard the band, their album titles give a hint as to what they're all about, from Corridors of Blissterday to Man It Feels Like Space Again. Pond's latest album has a much simpler title, it's called 9, and among its fantastic tracks is this one, “Lights of Leeming.” Josh Conway is a huge fan of Pond, though his own band, The Marias, approaches music with a much gentler soul. Conway started the group with his significant other, the band's namesake Maria Zardoya. Their beginnings are kind of funny: They tried to write songs for film and TV placements, none of which—as you'll hear in this chat—were ever picked up. But, happy with what they'd written, Conway and Zardoya ended up releasing them anyway, and the Marias was born. Their alt-pop is miles from our other guest's on today's episode, with elements of jazz and even reggaeton sprinkled throughout a great debut album called Cinema. Check out “Hush” from that album right here. In this conversation, Allbrook and Conway talk about the work hours of Australians versus Catalonians, about how even a deliberate attempt to sell out can result in great creative work, and how taking a walk under the influence of molly and Outkast changed Conway's outlook. Also, they declare, cheekily, that God is dead, and art is too. Enjoy. Thanks for checking out the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Nick Allbrook and Josh Conway for chatting. Kuti family scion Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 have been relentlessly touring the globe for the first time in years, with an ongoing US, UK, and European tour that has hit stops at major festivals like Glastonbury. The tour is currently booked through October 1 in the US, at the tenth annual Desert Daze in Moreno Valley, California, and through November 7 in Europe, at Villanos del Jazz in Madrid, Spain. Along the way, they have been performing classic anthems from their catalogue alongside new material from their upcoming album, like singles “Love and Revolution” and “Emi Aluta.” These two tracks were recorded live at Clout Studio, the legendary premises of Cool FM 96.9 on Victoria Island in Lagos and are out now. The new Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 record will also include hip-hop versions of some songs from their 2018 Grammy®-nominated album Black Times, in collaboration with Black Thought, co-founder/MC of Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show house band The Roots. The lead single “Kuku Kee Me (Remix)” is an official soundtrack selection for FIFA 23 and will be available for purchase and streaming on September 23 (the animated music video will be released September 22). The track perfectly marries the two artists' unique but global perspectives, combining funky beats and blistering verses to share the message of “people power” in the world today. They last worked with Black Thought on Common's single “When We Move,” which debuted worldwide for UN World Oceans Day before a performance on The Tonight Show, with footage of Seun at The New Afrika Shrine in Lagos intercut with Common, Black Thought, and The Roots live on-stage in New York. The youngest son of visionary Fela Kuti, Seun has continued the family tradition of fusing music and politics into something transcendent. He started opening for his dad at age nine, joined Egypt 80 before he was twelve, and assumed leadership of the band following his father's passing in 1997. Seun performs his father's seminal compositions with his own twists, digging deep into African tradition and culture. Like his parents and grandparents, Seun is a revolutionary activist on the frontlines who has been named Pro-Tem Chairman of Movement of the People, the political party launched by his father. With his weekly radio show, his mythical gigs, and a righteous social media presence, Seun is a towering figure in Nigeria and revered worldwide. His mission is vast: “Inspire Africa to be what it is supposed to be.” In 2011, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80's live record From Africa with Fury: Rise, co-produced by Brian Eno and John Reynolds, landed on both Billboard and digital international charts. The album was their first Knitting Factory Records before joining Knitting Factory Management in 2021. Still retaining members of the group that played, protested, and were arrested with his father, they have a reputation for playing multi-hour shows heavy on group improvisation. “My band Egypt 80 and I hope, as always, that our music will help make the world a more generous, kinder and more liveable place,” Seun concludes, “not only to fans but to its underrepresented people.”Pre-save “Kuku Kee Me (Remix)” here and keep up with Seun on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, & YouTube.DateVenueLocation9/16,City Winery,Washington, DC9/20,Subterranean,Chicago, IL

The Senate just passed a massive bill aimed at fighting climate change, cutting prescription drug prices, and raising taxes on rich companies. What would California gain? Georgia has new tax rules allowing an embryo to be claimed as a dependent on state tax returns. Indiana Gov. Eric Holcombe has signed a law that bans abortion from the moment of conception. I Think This is Great! with Clay N. Ferno Saturday Shorts, March 12, 2022 - "How's your Panny?" 2 Years kerouac100 #jackkerouac #ittigpod #podcast #claynferno http://www.claynferno.com/ http://claynferno.substack.com http://twitter.com/claynferno http://twitch.tv/claynferno http://youtube.com/claynferno "How's your Panny?" - stolen from my friend's Instagram account when they were just getting back into working on concerts again in 2021. I spent a lot of time thinking about time. I spend a lot of time thinking about death. Since the death of my Mother. Tim Heidecker and Weyes Blood's Fear of Death record had a profound effect on me. Fear of Death Live! at Desert Daze 2021 Photo Gallery. We near 1 million deaths in the US from COVID-19, an unfathomable number. “SIRI: How do I know if I have this?” — Thanatophobia Thanatophobia is commonly referred to as the fear of death. More specifically, it can be a fear of death or a fear of the dying process. It's natural for someone to worry about their own health as they age (I'm 46 this year). It's also common for someone to worry about their friends and family after they're gone. However, in some people, these concerns can develop into more problematic worries and fears. The American Psychiatric Association doesn't officially recognize thanatophobia as a disorder. Instead, the anxiety someone may face because of this fear is often attributed to general anxiety. (Great, LOL!) Signs and symptoms of thanatophobia include: anxiety dread distress (!!!?!) Treatment focuses on: learning to refocus the fears talking about your feelings and concerns How are you coping, on this 2 year pandemic anniversary? Are you missing someone? Are you finding more joy these days? Are you going out to shows? When I was riding Uber Eats deliveries on my bike in 2020, I crashed into a pole because I was listening to Oliver Tree. I saw Oliver Tree at House of Blues last night. I got to wear my cowboy hat and jacket. He has a cowboy thing going on too. Most of the people at the sold-out House of Blues show were not wearing masks. My short but succinct review of The Batman. I loved it, it was too long. I haven't done a deep dive into Easter Eggs yet, but I will. I was looking for the snarky Joe Strummer quote about stage time. “these people have things to do”… but I didn't find it. Link me to it below if you know what I'm talking about. I found this one instead: “I don't have any other message than don't forget you are alive” — Joe Strummer Sidebar, went to see an up-and-coming band the other night and it was not for me. I need my bands to rock, my country to make me sad, and my hip hop to make me move. Get out of the fucking middle of the road. I bought tickets (I can usually get a guest list spot) and I fucking left. Snoozefest. Maybe the quote is just “We, The People, Have Things To Do”. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Psychedelic Porn Crumpets over Zoom video! Perth’s prominent experimental quintet – Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – have quickly become one of Australia’s hottest prospects, uncovering all kinds of weirdness and psychotic fuzz in their deceptively concise and punchy sonic warfare. Today they announce their monolithic new album, SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, set for release February 5, 2021. Despite much of this year’s tour plans being put on pause, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have used their time off road to continue preparing themselves for the release of their fourth studio release, and an eventual blistering return to stages around the world with a heavy-hitter of an album primed for the live space. From SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets share a new effervescent taste of music in their new single, “Tally-Ho”. The track revels in creative hedonism, written to engage the senses and make your ears tingle with excitement. “I wanted something that could encapsulate loads of fun and sound a bit strange,” explains founding singer/guitar Jack McEwan, who was awarded first place in Music Radar’s top ten list of the best new guitar players in the world right now. “Like painting a colourful image of this distant world.”Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have already given fans an early taste of the forthcoming SHYGA! era, with “Mr. Prism” back in August. Earning acclaim upon its release across Spotify, Apple Music, Triple J, BBC Radio One as well as NME, CLASH, The Line Of Best Fit and Rolling Stone Australia, “Mr. Prism” signaled something special was building in Perth, that Psychedelic Porn Crumpets were gearing up for something big. The creation of SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, especially off the back of 2019’s acclaimed LP And Now For The Whatchamacallit, came together in a different environment for McEwan and the results speak to the band’s evolution and McEwan’s evolution as a songwriter and musician.“For the first time in a long time I was home without any tours booked, no work, no deadlines and I felt free to create. My writing process became ritualistic; every morning starting with a small walk to the local bottle shop at 11am and writing whatever flowed, allowing myself to design in all styles without boundaries, and not trying to theme the album early on. I haven’t had the luxury of writing this way since the first record, which I spent almost a year working on. It felt like I was myself again, creating without opinion or constraints. I was gliding through weeks with a day seeming to pass,”McEwan explains. In just a few years Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have quickly amassed a dedicated fanbase spanning genres and generations. 2019 saw sold out shows across North America, UK, Europe and Australia; not to mention spots on Desert Daze and Splendour in the Grass. Shyga! The Sunlight Mound carries on and seeds the band as one today’s hardest working acts and artists you need to watch out for. The career-defining record’s pulsating charge and expert riffs build and build until its final moments.Shyga! The Sunlight Mound is out now via Marathon Artists. We want to hear from you! Ben from Boston is my guest this episode! This was recorded the day after Joe Rogan's Spotify deal was announced, so we discuss what that could mean for the future of online streaming. Ben tells a pretty amazing story about seeing King Gizzard at Desert Daze, which led to a fun and long tangent on psychedelics. (We resume talking Gizz at 41:30.)
This week on the show, we revisit a fan-favorite episode: legendary producer and musician Steve Albini, and the game-changing Devo's Jerry Casale. Enjoy! The Talkhouse Podcast recently headed out to the fantastic Desert Daze festival at Moreno Beach at Lake Perris in Southern California. When we weren't catching sets by Tame Impala, King Gizzard, and My Bloody Valentine, we recorded a trio of great talks; this week, we present the first. When I saw that both Steve Albini and Devo's Jerry Casale were going to be at Desert Daze giving talks, I knew we had to pair these two icons of alternative music. They're big fans of each other's work, and halfway through their conversation, Steve said, “This is the sort of stuff no one ever talks about. These are the questions I’ve had for 30 years.” Their fascinating talk takes in the beginning years of Devo’s existence; their complex relationship with Neil Young; Brian Eno’s proclivity for ménage à trois; the differences between poker and making records; and how the name Devo became a category alongside jocks, squares and nerds. Subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. Feel free to DM me to let me know which artist(s) you’d love to see appear on a future episode. —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer This episode was recorded by Keenan Kush at Desert Daze, and by Mark Yoshizumi at Hook & Fade Studios in Brooklyn. Though the uninitiated might assume that all psychedelics essentially do the same thing, anyone who has been there will tell you that each has their own distinct flavor. In fact, some are definitely better than others at producing certain desirable effects. This is why after doing cartwheels down the razor's edge of sanity on acid all through that first night (allegedly), Nathan and Rikki not only knew they were due for a change of internal scenery - they knew just how to get there. Allegedly.

The Talkhouse Podcast recently headed out to the fantastic Desert Daze festival at Moreno Beach at Lake Perris in Southern California. When we weren't catching sets by Tame Impala, King Gizzard and My Bloody Valentine, we recorded a trio of great talks; this week, we present the first.
