Star Trek: Section 31. Initially announced as a television series in 2019, it was later morphed into a Suicide Squad Meets Star Trek movie. The film still stars Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, as the film and the TV series before it had been envisioned as a vehicle for her. However, in this "Lost Era" film, a future Enterprise captain steals the show. In this episode of Twin Cities Trekkies, Wes reviews the film and finds out that Michelle Yeoh did not steal the show as Philippa Georgiou. Real Life: Steven is sick or dead, we don't remember, so Ben and Devon take over the show. Devon is traveling for the holidays so needs to bill as much as possible at work. The jet is tens of millions of times larger than the black hole's event horizon. The galaxy M87, located in the Virgo constellation, provided the first-ever photo of a black hole in 2019, when the Event Horizon Telescope captured an image of the supermassive black hole at the galaxy's center. An international research team has now observed a teraelectronvolt gamma-ray flare seven orders of magnitude -- tens of millions of times -- larger than the event horizon, or surface of the black hole itself. A flare of this intensity -- which has not been observed in over a decade -- can offer crucial insights into how particles, such as electrons and positrons, are accelerated in the extreme environments near black holes. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/12/241213140634.htm  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messier_87  Black holes and why they look like that: https://youtu.be/zUyH3XhpLTo?si=7drAgoVloX9hytmo    New Technology Could Keep Communications Going During Disasters RNZ (12/6) News from New Zealand: “The 'mesh node' is a small black walkie-talkie sized box that connects to a cellphone through Bluetooth. Oh, Chicago.   Once upon a time you had the WLS Barn Dance.  Once upon a time you two professional football teams. One upon a time you had the stockyards. Once upon a time you had the world's tallest building.  Once upon a time you had a music scene that was the envy of the world.    People would migrate to Chicago to play here.  Sure, there were other scenes like Greenwich Village and Haight-Asbury, but for a while (and I don't mean that tiny era with Green and Smashing Pumpkins) that Chicago was the epicenter of great singer-songwriters.  Goodman, Prine, Holstein, Smith, Koloc, Dundee, the list goes on. Add to that Jim Post.  Jim Post is the iconic singer-songwriter of that era now long gone and almost forgotten.  A "self-made man", Post reinvented his style of music, themes of music and in a truly Chicagoan fashion, gave the middle finger to the music industry and set out on his own to make his own.  Poet, theater director and producer and part-time historian recently held " A Night With(Out) Jim Post" at the SPACE in Evanston, Illinois.   There were the singers still around from that era (and still going strong, such as Anne Hills, Howard Levy and Corky Siegal to name a few) but the tone of the evening was a nostalgic look back to Chicago's Folk Heyday, when clubs like the Earl of Oldtown would bring around luminaries to catch the latest, hottest folk act going on at the time.    Do we mourn what we once had? Or do we suck it up and determine that to be a Chicagoan is to truly go it alone?  Richard and Martin discuss that.  Musical clips from the evening at SPACE are also here to enjoy.  You can enjoy the entire evening here.   And yes, Martin pressures Richard to create a Chicago-centric award, the Posties. Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. Dr. Malka Simkovich joined us to discuss her educational background in Second Temple Judaism. She pointed out the dissonance between her TaNaKh studies from her Orthodox Jewish education and Bible studies from academia. In previous episodes (with Rabbi Dr. Joshua Berman, Rabbi Jeremy Weider, and Rabbi David Fohrman), we made our case for the authenticity of our Mesorah, defending it from attacks of Biblical Source Critics. However, in this conversation, Dr. Simkovich takes a different approach. She argues that even if some redaction took place, it should not affect one's commitment to Torah observance. Dr. Simkovich is intrigued by the gap between the eras of the Prophets and the Rabbis. She explains when the name "Judaism" first appeared, and the Judean or Jewish crisis of identity that played out during the Persian era. The question that all diaspora Jews were faced with was, "Has Judaism ended?" By deciding not to return to Israel, the Jews in exile were faced with the troubling reality of choosing to remain with that status. She explains how the rabbis, with their brilliant foresight, rescued Judaism from potentially being lost via the modality of the Torah along with the oral tradition, even after the loss of the Temple and the land of Israel. It is incredible how dynamic, adaptable, portable, and relevant the Torah remains. For those who claim the rabbis invented the oral tradition with the codification of the Mishnah, Dr. Simkovich cites evidence to the contrary from the writings of Josephus, in which he proclaimed that the oral tradition has always existed. She emphasizes that the survival of the Jewish people is nothing short of miraculous, including the impact and success of the rabbis. She insists that learning history shouldn't threaten anyone's faith but rather it should strengthen it (check out her interview on Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin's 18Forty podcast for more on this topic). Dr. Simkovich ends the interview by sharing her experience working with the Catholic Church and the challenges presented by the damaging blood libels that occurred over centuries, which the church is now working to correct. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/judaismdemystified/support

Positively Trek 177: Book Club: Terok Nor - Day of the Vipers This Book's Not Gonna Have a Happy Ending   The Occupation: its legacy looms large over the entire Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series, with the scars of that brutal era still felt by Bajor years later. However, not much has been told about the start of the occupation; what was Bajor like before the Cardassians came? What drove Cardassia to commit the crimes of the occupation? The subject of this week's Book Club episode explores these questions and more!   Before we finish with The Lost Era, there are just three more books to cover: The Terok Nor trilogy, chronicling the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Dan and Bruce talk about the first of these: Day of the Vipers by James Swallow. We discuss the characters both familiar and new, life on Bajor prior to the occupation, the state of Cardassia, dramatic irony, personal stories, scapegoats, the rise of the occupation, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings.   Recommended viewing: “Ensign Ro” - Star Trek: The Next Generation “Cardassians” - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine “The Collaborator” - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine   Show page: http://www.positivelytrek.com/ Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/positively-trek/id1501468628 Twitter: http://twitter.com/positivelytrek Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositivelyTrek   Help support the podcast! When Alec was a small boy, he traveled deep into the woods outside his home in Pennsylvania. With other children, he hoped to catch a glimpse of a man known as the Pennsylvania Hermit, a cave-dwelling old man who had gone insane and hidden himself away from society after his sister was executed for murdering her own children. But when Alec was 6, the Hermit finally died, passing away into legend. By the time the boy was a man, his father had died by suicide, the same year that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died--the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was up to this boy, Alexander Ramsey, to find a way out of the misery of the tangled mountain ridges, the land of the Pennsylvania Hermit and his father's death. It was up to Ramsey to find a way through a tortured American society spiraling out of control. Before long, he would find his way. Before long, he would have blood of his own on his hands. Alexander Ramsey was Minnesota Territory's first governor. He was a congressman, a senator and a secretary of war. He oversaw forced removals and executions. He helped orchestrate three wars. And along the way, he lived a high-octane political thriller of a life filled with backstabbing, unlikely alliances, and tragedy. In this episode, we lay out the forgotten fringes of the social and political world that shaped Alexander Ramsey as he took power for the first time, and as he learned how to wield his political strengths. Positively Trek 155: Book Club: The Buried AgePicard as Indiana Jones? While billed as a Star Trek: The Next Generation novel, The Buried Age by Christopher L. Bennett is also labelled “A Novel of The Lost Era,” continuing the stories set between the end of the classic Star Trek films and the beginning of TNG and “Encounter at Farpoint.” In the pages of this millennia- and epoch-spanning story, we learn a great deal about the history of our galaxy and what made Captain Jean-Luc Picard into the man we see at the beginning of his journey aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Bruce and Dan discuss The Buried Age. We talk about The Battle of Maxia, Picard's trial, a quest to discover hidden secrets of the galaxy's past, the mysterious Ariel, the measure of a man, the lessons learned in this story, the origins of Picard's crew, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings for The Buried Age. Jared and Josie met on a shoot and instantly hit it off. With their love for music forging the connection between them they began working together. Josie has a passion for styling while Jared has had a camera with him for as long as he can remember. They became a great team and have continued to build their brand and relationship off that very teamwork. They created a magazine called Lost Era, which can be found @losteramagazine and losteramagazine.com Jared is continuing to perfect his craft shooting models as often as possible. While Josie attends barbering school and continues to style the models Jared shoots. They have created a boot camp, for aspiring models to learn the craft. How to prepare for shoots, be professional, and know how to pose and how to insure they are well taken care of an empowered by the person behind the lens. Jared and Josie do a fantastic job of making their models feel empowered. In such an industry where there is so much negative attention around what they do. These two have made it their number one priority to make sure the model is taken care of. I had a great time chatting to both Jared and Josie and hope you enjoy listening to. They are young hardworking individuals and make a great team. I'm excited to see them grow and perfect their business in to the New Year. Keep your eyes out for the next issue of Lost Era Magazine and if you want to learn the ins and outs of the trade be sure to sign up for their boot camp asap. You can follow Jared here @jaredwkinley and Josie here @josiepierson Thanks for listening and as always, please leave a review.Cheers, Mike

David R. George III: One Constant Star. Many fans know Demora Sulu merely as the daughter of Hikaru and helmsman of the Enterprise-B. We only catch a glimpse of her in Generations, but as the literary universe has evolved we've come to know her through novels like The Captain's Daughter and Serpents Among the Ruins. For David R. George III, Demora has been an important character and the relationship between her and Captain John Harriman has been central to his view of the Lost Era—the time period between 2293 and 2369. Returning to the Lost Era for the first time in nine years, David's new novel brings us back to Demora, who is now captain of the Enterprise-B. In this episode of Literary Treks, Dan Gunther of TrekLit Reviews sits in for Matthew as we're joined by David to discuss the genesis of the novel, his goals in exploring the relationship between Demora, Hikaru, and Harriman, what it was like returning to the Lost Era after writing so much 24th-century political fatigue, the sense of isolation that pervades Demora's life, and the sense of responsibility that friends and colleagues have for one another. In our news segment we look Cross Cult's covers for a new German edition of Greg Cox's Eugenics Wars duology.

Serpents Among the Ruins. The Tomed Incident is a famous event in Star Trek history. But like so many such incidents, it's something we've heard in passing dialogue but never really learned much about. It was mentioned in three episodes of TNG—"The Neutral Zone," "The Defector," and "The Pegasus"—and one episode of Enterprise—"These Are the Voyages…" Okay... so four episodes of TNG. But what actually happened? This is what David R. George III answers in his Lost Era novel, Serpents Among the Ruins. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones are joined by Drew Stewart and Dan Gunther to discuss the novel, what led to the Treaty of Algeron, why the Romulans retreated from galactic politics before resurfacing on TNG, and to the ban on Federation cloaking technology. In our news segment we take a look at the final covers for Star Trek: Seekers 1 and 2 and get set for John Byrne's New Visions "The Mirror, Cracked."
