Last October, Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as the national president of the Congress party. The election was historic as the party's top post was, from 1978, occupied by a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family (except for brief spells between 1992 and 1998). Officially, the party says it is now ready to hold a similar election to the Congress Working Committee (CWC), its highest decision-making body, but there are still internal debates going on. The last time the CWC had an election was in 1997, under the presidency of Sitaram Kesri. Should there be an election now to the CWC? Here we discuss the question. In this episode, Manoj CG joins host Utsa Sarmin to discuss the highly contested Congress presidential election between Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge. He also talks about Kharge's past work and the challenges ahead of him as the first non-Gandhi president of Congress in over two decades.
The expected has happened. Mallikarjun Kharge is the new president of the Indian National Congress. His rival, diplomat turned politician Shashi Tharoor, garnered impressive thousand-odd votes against Kharge, who was considered to be the establishment candidate. The election does show that inner-party democracy in the Congress party is possible. By holding elections in a transparent way, the Congress has also shone a light on how tightly-controlled other parties, including the BJP, are.
As new president, Kharge must know it can't be Congress politics as usual. His first challenge: Work out the rules of engagement with the Gandhi family.

The Congress presidential election took place today. The result of the election would be out on October 19. Congress's Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge did a tough campaign for the post of Congress President. This is the first time in almost twenty-four years that Congress will get its non-Gandhi president. While Tharoor portrays himself as a symbol of change, Kharge portrays himself as someone who will save the party's ideology and principles. Will the election be a game-changer for the party? Whose leadership will help the Congress party? Will the Gandhis continue to play a dominant role in the party? Listen in. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/business-line/message

FYI Host: @jhansiserani Sound designing: @lalit1121992
