Most accounts of women in mid-20th century American politics highlight trailblazers such as Frances Perkins or the handful of women elected to Congress in those years. But women's participation in politics- both as voters and as party activists- was far more significant than most Americans realize, elevating a group of white middle-class women into positions of influence over Presidents from Franklin Roosevelt to Dwight Eisenhower. Melissa Blair joins Ben & Bob to talk about how and why these women became cornerstones of party politics in these years and why they've largely been forgotten in our national memory. Melissa's book, Bringing Home the White House: The Hidden History of Women Who Shaped the Presidency in the Twentieth Century, chronicles the lives of five influential women whose work was critical in helping their party's candidate win the White House in this era. Melissa Estes Blair is a Professor of History at Auburn University whose research focuses on women and politics in the United States in the twentieth century. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.

A book dedicated to BookTok? Nothing sounds more perfect for the Busy Girls Book Club. Melissa Blair's "A Broken Blade" plays to every fantasy girl's wishes while doing so much more. It somehow wraps up tricky topics like alcoholism, persecution of indigenous people and self-harm into a fantasy novel. Trigger warning implied - it's a complicated read.

Meet Cyrina: As a business mindset coach and rapid transformational therapist Cyrina is passionate about helping business owners understand how to navigate growth. Their business is leading them to a place that is amazing, but also unfamiliar. Her work focuses on mindset and becoming confident to step into the next level, bringing you scientifically proven techniques to get your subconscious on board so you have 100% of your mind working with you and for you, no longer working against you. Why don't you share a little bit about how our subconscious affects our business? So the main thing to understand is that science can hook up things to our brains and measure them. I think there's a lot of misconceptions about your subconscious that it’s this deep dark place or whatnot, but it's our autopilot, it's our programming, and what happens is there's a state they can measure brainwaves. So there's a state that we're living in, between the age of birth and 10, where that's all getting programmed. Then around 12, you start being able to think abstract and more logically, and all that kind of stuff. So that programming is set, and then it's running and a lot of times the way we were raised, the experiences we had, the beliefs about money, the beliefs about relationships, and success, and all those kinds of things are in contrast to the direction we want our business to go. We might have grown up learning that rich people are snobs or greedy, or we don't want to be like those people, or money is evil. You might not notice them until then, and as a business owner, we have to show up more, we have to put ourselves out there, we have to accept more money, we have to raise our prices, we have to sell. So all those things, if there's anything in your past that goes against where you're headed in your business, it's going to mess with you. So it's affecting business owners anytime you're struggling to take the action that you want to take and I think it's something inherent in all of us as well, this idea to put yourself out there and selling your product and service. That takes a lot of belief in ourselves and there's not a ton of people that had the ideal growing up experience where you didn't hit any bumps in the road that knock that down and take your confidence and have at least a couple of beliefs that go against how you need to show up in your business. What is one way to change a limiting belief? To me, the number one thing is knowing that we can change. Old science was like, Oh, well, you're wet cement before age 10 and you're getting imprinted or whatever and then you're just stuck. I think a lot of the belief to overcome is like, "Oh, I just don't do that, I can't do that, that's just not my personality." But when you know, any challenge that you're coming up against, you can change. To me, that's the most powerful one. But it's awareness, it's knowing, okay, I raised my prices and I'm procrastinating, I'm not taking action to let anybody know, maybe there's something here. That process of self-reflection and awareness is a huge step. I have people get out a piece of paper, write anything that they're struggling with, and ask why am I not showing up? Why am I afraid to raise my prices? Why am I freaking out and procrastinating about this? Just that process of asking that question and listening is crucial because our consciousness is just thinking, thinking all day long, your heartbeats and your lungs breathe, and your mind thinks. But if you write down a question on a piece of paper, you ask yourself a question, and you listen, then you're automatically in that different state, instead of just like this constant diatribe from your brain, of all the things, you just kind of get quiet and listen and see what comes up. How is this different than positive thinking? Because that's another avenue that I see is just to remain positive to have a positive mindset, but this seems like it's a different approach. It's funny because your subconscious runs around 95% of your brain. So if in your conscious, you're going, I'm successful, I'm amazing. I'm a millionaire. And you have a subconscious belief, it's going to kind of be like, Yeah, no, whatever. So it's understanding that to make lasting changes, you've got to get that subconscious on board. If you're saying these things to yourself in front of the mirror, a lot of people like the affirmations and these kinds of things, and there's a part of you that's arguing with it. Again, it's really important to listen to the part that's arguing and figuring out okay, what's that belief. That's why a lot of times the affirmations and the things we do in our conscious, don't work as well, because it's only 3% or 5% of our mind. Now, a lot of things you can look in the mirror and say, I'm wonderful, and I'm good and if there's no argument, if there's no part of your mind going, "Yeah, whatever, you're full of crap," then you're good. But if that comes up and you're finding yourself saying them and getting nowhere, that's when you know, there's something going on that's deeper that needs addressing. Can you share with our listeners, one of your favorite networking experiences that you've had? Yeah, so I lived for the past 20 years and Central Wisconsin a couple of hours north of Milwaukee, and moved down here, August of 2019. When I still lived in Central Wisconsin, I had just started my business three years ago, and I was looking for Facebook Groups and I googled, "women helping women in Wisconsin," and "women, Wisconsin entrepreneurs," I just googled it in the Facebook search to see what was there. I found Melissa Blair's group, Wisconsin Women Helping Women Entrepreneurs. So as part of that group already, when I was moving down here, I was like, "Okay, I'm going to just make a post and ask, I need an office, I'm going to look for an office," and someone responded right away. I had we lived down here, I think just a couple of weeks, and I met with a woman named Sarah Feldman. We ended up talking in her office for at least an hour and I told her my whole story. She was really generous with her time and she's like, "Okay, I'm having a women's event in a month, and I want you to be on the panel," And I was like, "Okay, that sounds great!" So it was and it was a fabulous event. She's like, "Let's just cut through the bull, and have women entrepreneurs really talk about it and their struggles and, be open about it." It was a really cool event, you had some amazing speakers. Then at that event, I met Todd Reed, who since then have collaborated and connected with their community. Their networking community is phenomenal, the people are awesome and that was just from a random Facebook post looking for an office. How do you stay in front of and best nurture the network and community that you've created? It's a love-hate relationship with Facebook because this is where a lot of them live. I kind of ebb and flow like I'm on a good amount and then I go over to way too much and then I pull back. But what I try to do in groups is answer questions, share recommendations, share any free content that I have, videos that I make, or podcasts. My main thing is helping people overcome anxiety. So whatever those limiting beliefs are, they show up most of the time and anxiety and overwhelm and so explaining to people grab a piece of paper, start asking questions. You can do that for free right now and you may be surprised what comes up when you just have that conversation. Those kinds of things like sharing whatever info that I'm that I have, that may be helpful really helps, just giving. What advice would you have for that business professional who's looking to grow their network? I think the biggest thing is to show up. Put a post, ask a question, speak up, share. I've heard from a lot of people and I've certainly experienced this myself, where you walk into the room, and you feel like you don’t belong. I think it's having that belief that I do belong here, people want to hear what I have to say, I have something to contribute, I have something to give and walking into it like that like we're all equals, and realizing I'm probably not the only one that's a little nervous right now changes everything. I know in my own life, saying people want to hear what I have to say is a really powerful statement. Again, coming into the networking group space with that, what can I give here, how can I serve here attitude allows people to tell that you're there to give. If you could go back to your 20-year-old self, what would you tell yourself to do more or less of or differently with regards to your professional career? The main thing for me, in my 20s I was just trying so hard to be a success and get people's approval and prove my worth. So the main thing I would say is "Sweetie, you are good, you're valuable, you're worthy, you're enough just the way you are," and instead of trying to earn the worth, get the worth first, then do your business, it'll be a lot more fun. Work on your self-worth, then you're gonna be able to do your business with a whole different healthy way of operating. We've all heard of the six degrees of separation. Who is someone that you'd love to connect with and do you think you could do it within the sixth degree? So I have a four-day-old relationship with a person that I've seen on YouTube that I greatly respect. His name is Dr. Greg Carr. So the YouTube channel is called In Class with Carr and he's like this history Encyclopedia. So when I work with my clients, I empower them with knowledge, right? Like even the conversation we had, is it normal to do this? Yes. When you know it's normal to behave the way you're behaving, you have tons less stress because you don't think you're insane. So to me, he's providing that knowledge around our current political environment going, "Hey guys, here's the deal, here's the history," and just providing so much knowledge that for me is taking my anxiety away. He's in DC and my brothers in Virginia Beach so I feel like my brother might know someone who knows someone in DC. Then there's another networking group that I'm part of called polka dot powerhouse. I would guess, if I said the Facebook page, "Hey, I'm looking to connect with someone, he's at Howard University in DC, does anybody know anybody there?" I bet I could at least get a good start there. What any final words of advice to our listeners around the topic of growing and supporting your network? Just show up, share your gifts, and set that intention. I'm here to meet people and serve. Trust that sales are going to happen, you don't need to worry about that and, always having that intention of giving. Lastly, just have fun! Hey parents! Do you know what Pornhub is? Chances are, your kids know enough about it to carry on a conversation around the lunch table at school. Are you prepared to fight back against this multi-million-dollar monstrosity? We’ve recently had an epiphany—a lightbulb moment if you will. Since we fight porn every day, we took it for granted that everyone knows what Pornhub is, but apparently that’s not the case! (See story below.) Well … you can’t stop an enemy if you don’t know it exists. So today we’re giving you the parent’s definitive guide to Pornhub. Can’t fight what you don’t know A few weeks ago Marilyn was in a women's meeting. The ladies were talking generally about choices, and then they started discussing how you might respond if you see a threat creeping in on someone or something you love. The first thing is to decide between doing something or nothing, right? She had an example to share, so she spoke up: My heart was bursting, because a friend of mine had told me the day before how she had immediately acted on what she perceived as a threat to her whole community. Recently, a couple local radio hosts in our area had been promoting Pornhub on their show—a kind of joke, or a publicity stunt. I wrote about one such incident on our blog [add link]. Well, when my friend heard this happen on a separate occasion she immediately pulled over (she was driving at the time) and wrote detailed notes on her phone about what she had heard on the radio. Then as soon as she got home, she emailed the radio host and lodged a formal complaint with the broadcasting standards council. Yes!!! Citizens in Action! (That’s what we love to see! Just like we were talking about in our episode with Melissa Blair, Campaign for a Porn-free Childhood.) I thought my women friends would be stoked. To be honest, they all looked kind of underwhelmed. That was, until one of them blurted out. “What’s Pornhub?” (Bless her heart for asking!) I was stunned. I had assumed everyone knew about Pornhub—even the blue-hairs in our group. As Forbes magazine points out: [QUOTE]“With page stat numbers in the billions, it's hard to imagine that there are people on this planet somehow not viewing or uploading content to Pornhub. I looked around and I saw many women (younger and older), with the same confused look, waiting for my response. To be clear, they all know pornography is accessable on the web. They just had no idea that it was operating as an efficient above-ground industry. Related Content: Radio Station Promotes Pornography: 3 Easy Ways to Take Action Maybe you already know a bit about how the porn industry operates online. Maybe this is news to you. No matter what knowledge-base you’re starting at, this episode has take-aways for every person concerned with protecting kids from internet pornography. Don’t forget to subscribe to Media Savvy Moms on your favourite podcasting platform! What is Pornhub? [4:20] Pornhub is the largest pornographic video-sharing platform in the world. Oh, and it’s free! Think YouTube, except exclusively for hardcore pornography. [6:15] Learn about MindGeek, the sneaky Montreal based company that is monopolizing the online porn industry. However, if you visit their corporate website, you’d have no idea what they actually do. [7:55] Having trouble believing porn is such a big industry? Here are some statistics from Forbes magazine. Pornhub is very proud and very public about their numbers. Remember, this is just one website. In 2019, they boasted... 42 billion visits to Pornhub 115 million visitors a day 6.8 million videos were uploaded 1.36 million hours of new content (=169 years) 98,000 new models (as in, amature porn stars ... these are human beings) [10:10] Learn about Pornhub’s mission to normalize porn consumption through methods like academic scholarships, attempts to sponsor sports teams, and--of course--advertising. (Did you hear about the outrageous Pornhub billboard on Times Square?) In the end, it’s all about the money. How is Pornhub targeting our kids? [13:30] Have you witnessed the cuteness overload that is “Baby Yoda” from the hit series Mandalorian? Learn how the Pornhub logo became associated with this tiny tot in a viral meme that normalizes porn use by our children. [18:45] Gail Dines from Culture Reframed always says “follow the breadcrumb trail of an average 11-year old” to find out what is available to our children online. Remember, there is no age gate on Pornhub. Unfortunately, if our kids aren’t accessing this site, then their friends at school probably are. That is why we need to have open conversations with our kids! [19:35] How many clicks do you think it takes for a teen to get from SnapChat to Pornhub? Protect Young Eyes tried this experiment with a test phone and posted the results. Listen to find out what they learned. Related Content: Want to protect your kids while they’re using their devices? Click here to get a FREE 30-day trial of the Bark App, or download Bark at the app store and apply the code MEDIASAVVY at checkout. [21:00] When we looked at the statistics, most people (83%) were accessing Pornhub on mobile devices. But do you know what device is overlooked as an access portal when it comes to KIDS and porn in the home? It’s actually gaming consoles. Related content: Tech for the Holidays with Sarah Siegand. And the stats for Pornhub back this up, too: “It should be noted that users were accessing Pornhub and watching porn on their game consoles as well. Sony Playstation led the pack with 51.5% of game console traffic … Xbox traffic accounted for 34.7%.” (Forbes) How can we fight back? [23:15] Tune in for some practical tips that you can apply in your own home! [26:25] Okay, we’ll give you one spoiler. Many of the solutions to this problem go back to basics, like creating a safe place to talk about ANYTHING with our kids. (Remember our Construction Site episode?) Related Content: Teens Reveal 8 Ways to Build Up the Courage to Resist Porn Start a conversation So … now you know what Pornhub is and how it is targeting kids. But what about your friends? Do they know? This week, ask another parent, “Do you know what I learned about PornHub this week?” Have your camera ready, ‘cause you’ll want to capture the look on their face when you say that! ” Or if you’re feeling extra ambitious, bring it up at parent group, like Marilyn did! Do you believe you can change the world in just 10 minutes? This mom does! Find out how she is rocking her neck of the woods when it comes to legislative change and pornography. Want to get involved too? It might be easier than you think. Melissa Blair is a mother of three, blogger, speaker, and activist. She is also founder of Campaign for a Porn-free Childhood, which advocates for Congress to initiate laws allowing parents and guardians the right to protect minors from pornography and indecent internet material. Melissa has actively pushed for changes in public policy in Texas and Arkansas, spent time on Capitol Hill, and visited personally with many of her local legislators and constituents. She is also the state director for Texas and National Projects Director for the National Decency Coalition. The National Decency Coalition is an organization dedicated to making America aware of the dangers of pornography and the public health crisis surrounding the use of pornography. They work to pass state and federal resolutions and legislation which will help decrease easy access to pornography in all its forms. Highlights from this episode: -At the root of public policy, this is about real people. It is about protecting our children. -We need to share our stories. We can’t be closed and clinical. -Getting involved in the legislative process is easier than you think. Start local. Your representatives will be invested in what you are worried about because YOU are the voters, and they want to be re-elected. -Gather your voices. Create a stir and the government will start to hear your concerns, and they will listen. -Be willing to get involved beyond public policy. Pornography is a 600 layered blanket--it’s not a 1 layered solution. Challenge: 3 THINGS YOU CAN DO IN 10 MINUTES TODAY: 1) Find out where your local government stands (For US, look up your state at nationaldecencycoalition.org) 2) Find your local policy makers (For US, Contact Your Elected Officials at usa.gov; For Canada, Find Your Members of Parliament at ourcommons.ca) 3) Send an email. Ask them what happens next. They will call—do not be intimidated. (See sample email that you can cut and paste below.) AND THEN AFTERWARD: Spread the word. Ask others to do the same. Make it easy. Include links and copy-and-paste content. Links/Resources: The Beginner’s Guide to Changing the World: 7 Tips on Creating Legislative Change (article) Citizen's Handbook to Influencing Elected Officials: Citizen Advocacy in State Legislatures and Congress: A Guide for Citizen Lobbyists and Grassroots (book) Talking Points About Pornography - National Center on Sexual Exploitation Sample email: Below is a message that you can copy and paste when you email your local officials. (Just edit the portions within the brackets to suit your needs.) Dear [name of representative]: I am writing to you as a concerned parent. We need your help protect our children from the crisis of pornography. As of today, [your city/state/territory/province] is falling behind in this fight. Meanwhile pornography is fueling human trafficking, child sexual abuse, compulsive sexual behavior, sexual dysfunction, campus sexual assault, military sexual assault, prostitution and objectification at global epidemic levels. Many other legislative bodies have taken aggressive action, recognizing pornography as a public health crisis, and taking measures to help. But what are we doing in [city/state/territory/province]? Our reputation, responsibility and future is at stake here. As a proud [Texan, American, Canadian], we are imploring legislators who have taken up honorable positions to uphold the integrity of their office by taking a stand to protect our most vulnerable. [If your local government is considering a specific piece of legislation, such as the "Pornography: a Public Health Crisis" Resolution in Texas, then this would be a good place to include a plea to support it, and a description about what that legislation would include. For example: We are asking you to help declare Texas as supporting the "Pornography: a Public Health Crisis" Resolution. The resolution recognizes many levels of pornography’s harmful effects on individuals and society and declares the need for education, research, prevention, and policy change. The 2018 edition calls upon state District Attorneys and the Department of Justice to enforce federal obscenity laws and Congress to address the crisis problem of children accessing pornography on the Internet.] We will be the first to fight for children in the digital age. Will you please stand with us and help protect America’s future? Sincerely,
Ever wonder what the term "self-care" actually even means? It seems like such a buzzword lately, which is exactly why we want to unpack this concept together. If you're a mom, a creative entrepreneur, heck, if you're a HUMAN PERSON, learning how to care for your *whole* self in healthy ways isn't just beneficial, it's crucial. One of our favorite filters for self care is the question our dear friend, Melissa Blair once asked us, "How's your head? How's your heart? How's your butt?" I mean... if that doesn't cover it, we don't know what does! Of all the episodes we share, please do not miss this one, sister. It's so, so important and you may be pleasantly surprised by our refreshing definition of self care, because we strongly believe that it shouldn't feel like one more oppressive thing to "get right" or add to your to-do list. In this conversation we share simple and practical ways to: know yourself & explore your needs (what is life giving VS life draining for you) speak up & communicate your needs push back on guilt set boundaries check in with yourself (how do you FEEL? is your body telling you something?) differentiate between self-comfort VS self-care put yourself back ON the list (because let's all be real here- we can't always put ourselves at the top!) This episode was originally #80 but we are re-releasing it as a part of our Summer Series- we hope you enjoy!

Enjoy this episode Let’s meet Melissa, Melissa is all about helping small businesses achieve efficiency and time by blending technology with marketing (https://www.cultivate-communications.com/) Melissa Blair is a serial entrepreneur and a product of 2 entrepreneurial parents. Small business is in her DNA. This is also why she is so passionate about helping other entrepreneurs. She knows all too well how much time, energy, and money it takes to run a small business. As a self-proclaimed ‘marketing geek’ she has worked with a wide variety of software systems on the market that claims to be easy to use. What she found though is that none of those tools were built for the Soloprenuer or 2-5 person companies. They were built for organizations who had a marketing staff or who could afford to hire out consultants to help them. In most cases, it still meant having to Frankenstein together numerous software tools in an effort to build a cohesive system. Her company, Cultivating Sales, has what she has nicknamed her ‘Soloprenuer Software.’ Software that has been specifically designed to incorporate the tools that a small service-based business needs and that is easy to use and at an affordable price. The bold lines and decorative details of Art Deco have stood the test of time and are evident in the architecture of cities like Washington and Baltimore.
