So, when it comes to the vast majority of our B2B model, it's based on networking and being able to build relationships with other lawyers because you do business with those you know, like, and trust.30:29 - Hiring is tough. It's one of those skills that's not easily acquired. And when you start bringing people into your company, that's a really big step because now you're responsible for somebody else and possibly their family. And you have to understand that you have a commitment to them, but they also have a commitment to you. It was like doing the logo, like building a business plan. It looked really good, but I felt that there was no money flowing in from it and that whole process, and I had to take ownership of where I felt like my blame ended and where I would stop blaming my former business partner for my current circumstances and my lack of success. In my case, it was in my coaching business. 27:03 - When you've borrowed people's audiences enough, because you've guested on other people's podcasts, they've heard your message, they want to learn more, and you have your own podcast, then they're in an incubator of being able to consume your content, get to know you, understand your messaging, understand your values, and then discern based on long-form content if they want to buy rather than like short 15-second reels, where you're mouthing something that they may forget in a couple of days, like when you take the time to consume a podcast, three out of four people who listen to podcasts listen to learn something new.30:59 - This is where I get very on with podcasters. Do the guest a favor, release the episode, honor your commitment, and be impeccable with your word, because podcasting can be a really good thing. This is like the secret sauce, guys, like it can be a beautiful way to pick your brain, like where you get the concepts, the knowledge, the book recommendations, the strategies—and you're like, holy crap, I'm getting this for free. Yes, you're getting this because you are committing to share their message and their strategies with the world. And you just simply can't be that, whether you're looking at the customers you serve, the employees you have, or even your own internal goals, I really do think that you've got to get very, very precise on what those goals are and how those goals are brought about through an organization.28:09 - I don't know the right answer for you. I know the right answer for Kajabi was to remain steadfastly focused. The outcome, which was the success of our customers, meant that when our customers needed email, we built email. When our customers needed automated live events, we built automated live events.It meant that whatever our customers needed, we were committed to staying at the forefront of that for them.32:20 - I'm a much bigger fan of actual intelligence than I am of artificial intelligence. That's the AI that I choose to focus on. I think that right now, AI is an amazing tool, but it's a terrible leader. If you're counting on the fact that AI is going to replace your business, then you probably deserve to be replaced by AI. If the world needed information and that was what was important or relevant, we'd already be set; you know, all of the information is online, available for free, and in a disorganized and possibly not true fashion, but it's all out there and available. And AI is learning off of that and is a little bit better. And so the odds are stacked against most people. So, when people go to the bank and the first thing they say is, "Oh, let me go get a small business loan," it's almost like looking for Bigfoot; it's almost nonexistent. But then, a lot of times, people will say, "Well, let me try to go for an SBA loan." Less than 1% of businesses ever get approved for SBA loans, especially in the black community, because a lot of those businesses don't have their paperwork in order.11:35 - I started studying economics because I often say that one of the reasons why a lot of small businesses, especially in our communities, don't make it is that we don't learn the economics of things. We hear about financial literacy, but I think that economics is the second part of that. And so in my four-step Roundtree methodology, I call it that there's four things that you need to focus on, or four steps. Number one is mindset. Number two is understanding the power of credit. Number three is knowing the cost of money. That's the economic part, which eventually will help you build assets and wealth.29:14 - A lot of times I meet so many people who go and get capital or want to go into business, and they're so busy looking at everybody else's lens that they are trying to hurry up and get there, not knowing that the person who you're looking at probably has been in the game or running this race for 20 years, like myself. So, stop trying to compare yourself to somebody who's on chapter 20 and you're still in the introductory stage of your book or in your journey. Because I talk to a lot of entrepreneurs where it's like they have an idea, but they are really hesitant about trying to make any leaps forward with it. And you can always say what if, but at some point you have to just be able to take that step. 26:16 - There's going to be a lot of critics out there. There's going to be a lot of people who are going to laugh in your face and tell you that what you're doing is not worth your time, your energy, or your effort. But, at the end of the day, you need to be the one that can say to yourself, I believe it's worth my effort and my time, and I'm confident in what I'm doing. You're going to have to give autonomy, and you're going to have to sometimes do things in parallel.16:00: So the reality is that marketing in general, for, I'm going to say, more than 90 percent of my clients, is very much an educational journey. Which is why they're probably hiring me. The reality is that a lot of companies go, "I don't know where to start." And they go, "Well, where have you started?" And they go, "Well, I've done this." And I can probably ask 5 or 6 questions within 5 minutes. And I'll be able to identify why they're not successful. 26:58: When you start your business, you're going to have to work with people you don't like because you have to get it going. You have to cross that chasm. You know, you've got to make sure you've got your case studies and your success track record. But once you do that, don't work with someone you don't like. It can be a part of a lot of these initiatives.23:07 - Somebody could put some big money into hydroponics, and this thing could blow up. So, I think that is one of the things, like people just aren't putting money behind it yet because there are a lot of things in this world. We're still stuck on the old stuff. Instead of looking ahead and saying, "You know what? And first of all, it's impossible and second of all, I think the most successful people find the platform of platforms that they're on. That's why they're comfortable with that; they're drawn to it. They're going to do it consistently, right? Because one of the biggest things on authority marketing is that you have to do things consistently.18:50- So there's a deal-maker mentality. One of the reasons I really started the podcast is because I found that every company's trying to grow organically. Everybody's trying to get more customers, more clients, increase sales and marketing, and provide great products and services, right? And you should do that. If you can't get a customer, a client, get another one, and get another one organically, you probably don't have a viable business. Having said that, though, I also would run into people all the time who would be frustrated they weren't growing or they were not growing as fast as they'd like and they were trying to, let's say, access a new market or hire a new talent or get into a new vertical, geography, whatever it was, and they were trying to do it organically. And there are many, many ways that you can do deals to help accelerate that. And if you study the most successful companies, they do both. They have a good, or excellent, organic growth engine. And they also do deals. 33:30-The other huge thing that's been important to me in my life for many, many years now is being of service. But one reason, as you so again brilliantly pointed out, Elzie, is because they go from not having enough customers to having too many. And because they are not focusing on those things that you call as being in the middle, they're so focused on bringing the business in that they're not looking at the customers that are angry and not returning and leaving bad reviews and then bad word of mouth spreads way faster than positive word of mouth, all of these things start to rear their ugly head and it creates this recipe for disaster via failure.11:58 - Document what you do and how you do it. Those two things alone will carry you far. And when you document it, document it in a way that if you were to hand it to someone else, that person could, within reason, not only follow it and understand it, but produce the same result as if you were to do whatever it is that you've written down. Think of this. This is what we call processes in operations speak. Get your processes and your procedures out of your head and onto paper, into some digital format. Whatever you can get it into that can easily be shared with someone else.25:40 - How are stick figures and index cards foundational to your business infrastructure? Here's what comes out of those exercises that I just described. Number one, job descriptions. Now you have succinct, transparent, well-thought out job descriptions, so that there isn't any room for interpretation. You know exactly what you want that specific role to do, and now you're in a better position to go and recruit, interview, and hopefully even offer some type of offer to have someone join your team. It also serves as a foundation for creating an organizational chart for your business. You asked, "What does it look like when you have three to five employees or five to ten, then ten plus?" We always have at least two versions of an organizational chart that we create for our clients. The current state, meaning this is what it looks like now, and maybe for the next twelve months. And then there's a version, this is what it's probably going to look like in three years or five years, just so that everyone has a visual picture of how much the company can grow if they continue on their trajectory.28:05 - The number one benefit truthfully goes back to your customer experience. You got to take a moment and pause and take a deep breath and take a look at the situation, because it's not always as you assume it is. You just rush in. That's going to get you in deeper trouble.12:39 - So, we as employers have to realize that treating our employees with disrespect has huge implications not only for that individual employee, but also for how they treat their colleagues and how they treat their customers. So, all of our research tells us that if you have a culture where people treat each other with respect, that is going to have some significant positive bottom line impacts all the way from customer satisfaction, all the way to retaining your best and your brightest people.16:45 - It's imperative that people understand that our workplaces are more diverse than ever before in our history. And that is not going to change and we're not going to go back to the way it was. And so, if we accept that our workplaces are diverse, we must accept that people are different and have different expectations around what respect is for them. And if we find out what those are and we meet those expectations, we're likely to have a respectful environment.22:28 - People are so resistant and we live in such a highly politicized environment now, where the very term "diversity" is now political and politicized, and it drives me nuts. And my focus is on respect, which is at the core of everything we do here. And if we can help folks understand how important respect is, regardless of who you are. If I treat you in a way that you consider respectful, that's likely to turn out to be a good thing.23:15 - We usually start with education. We help business leaders understand two things, that one, that respect and disrespect are feelings. They're not part of rational cognitive thinking. And feelings are very, very important. Unfortunately, feelings tended to be downplayed or ignored in the workplace. But what we're seeing now is being a part of a team where you feel respected and valued and trusted, and you could say something that's a little bit contradictory of your boss and not get pilloried for it and not get in trouble for it. It was probably some failure. It was probably some lack of ability to be able to find it somewhere else for yourself. And those are the things that connect people to your brand.10:40 - Let's be fair. Everybody is not good at what they say they're good at these days. It's like, "I'm amazing," but you're not. So, we have to be cognizant of that and be very diligent about where we're spending our money. So, I would suggest if you have a marketing coordinator, a marketing director, that you invest in training them, getting them some training on PR strategies. Because the truth of the matter is, an integrated strategy is the best. You need all of it. You need PR, you need marketing, you need advertising. You need it all.19:37 - My podcast network is really just another way of giving my clients and my business partners opportunities to find spaces where they are seen as credible. Every time we open our mouth and someone hears what we have to say, that elevates your brand. Everything you say these days, or type, or tweet, they become a part of your brand. So, allowing for these spaces to be used to elevate people's brands, their message, their stories, I think it was very important. It's called the Empowered Podcast Network. You'll learn something new. You'll have the opportunity to have a discussion about some difficult stuff. And it just feels good sometimes to be able to get it off your chest and have thoughtful conversations about things that everybody ain't ready for. But if you're subscribing to the show, you clearly like what they're delivering, and you're trusting that podcast host to continue to deliver you quality content.21:28 - You don't think people have gone through what you've gone through. I think everybody feels kind of isolated in their stuff until you start talking about it, and then other people that you're talking to will be like, "Oh yeah, well let me tell you what happened to me." Well, because we never talked about it, especially when things happen in Black families. We aren't supposed to talk about it. And so, if there's no engagement other than to say, "I think I have X number of listeners," then what are you selling to the potential audience? So, there really is a challenge in that. In the world of public relations, I consider Andrea Pass Public Relations is a client of mine. So, I'm my own client. So I'm out there like I am today, getting featured on your particular podcast because you reach an audience of business experts and entrepreneurs that would be appropriate clients for me. But it's all part of a process. Is it cut and dry on how it can work? I don't really know because clients are waiting for those analytics. And in a podcast, you don't know the analytics until the podcast could be out six months or a year.09:36 - I think it's about establishing that relationship and seeing where it could go. That this worked out really well. We'd like to have you back. Can you be a sponsor? There's got to be a create the relationship first, because there are so many podcasters today and so many homegrown journalists, people that did not necessarily go to journalism school or have an internship at a TV station, or what have you. So, I think there has to be that recognition that, yes, I might want it to be a business, but let's take the steps necessary.11:41 - In my opinion, podcasters need to listen. You might have a list of questions, but it doesn't mean that question number three has to come after question number two. If the answer to question number two incites something in an effective podcaster, then that could warrant another question, and there should be that comfort level to not have to go down a laundry list of questions a certain way. So, I think that's one of the things. The other thing, I believe that podcasters need to make sure their engagement on social media is up there. And if that means all of your friends and family, and I would have no idea that these are your friends and family.21:23 - I've also flipped things. It is my life-work balance. Work isn't first, life is first. And I think because of that, I'm able to provide a service to my clients where they see results and see results quickly. So, being a solopreneur is exciting. I'm really loving it. I'm a kid in the candy store that if I click with you and you want to hire me, great. If we don't click, that's okay, too. Not everyone is going to be everyone else's cup of tea. And that's all right.25:16 - I don't spend months and months strategizing. But actually, business owners are busy. What happened, and it happened with me in my previous business, I had quite a few consultants come in and do these big pieces of work. They'd make these recommendations. They'd give me the report. The report would go in my bottom drawer, and it would be great at the time when I read it. But then now I'm back into operations mode. I've forgotten all about it and actually, nothing really gets actioned. So, then that's where the accountability piece comes in and the coaching piece, because actually we've got these strategies, and this is what we're going to do. And I'm going to support you with the process and get it done. So, it was kind of desk research, then I started to test the concept and realized actually that's exactly how I thought it was going to go, is exactly how it went. When I implemented the other elements is when I started to see the clients really excel and grow their businesses, and scale their businesses.11:05 - For each individual area, I have a separate kind of package. As I said, I've got Vision:20. I've got "build my strategy", "guide my vision", so there's a variety of different areas. When we take clients through that, the whole thing, we see amazing results. We've had clients scale very low four figures up to six, seven figures and still climbing. Actually, what my clients often say is the most impactful piece is that vision piece. Because really what I also encourage them to do, which is more of a coaching element, is around the idea of thinking big. 15:51 - As much as you want to be doing all of these things, life happens. Giving examples and case studies of this also is usually a big eye-opener for them. Some of them come to me because they've experienced severe burnout because they're tired. They're exhausted. So whilst for some people it is that kind of I want to be the be all and end all, I think sometimes physically, mentally, practically, they recognize actually this is not sustainable. Me taking them through the process of asking them questions and kind of shining a light on that makes them realize how unsustainable actually and we need to do something about it.17:12 - Biggest life lesson, I would say my motto, which is think big, take action, keep pushing. And the next stage becomes shortening the time to collect repetitive data, eventually making you have a better day, less time spent over a computer doing manual stuff.07:57 - You have to collect data. I like to put it this way. It's like human communication, right? I mean, human communication is just collecting data and responding to something. Given any type of business that you need to do, you need to get some sort of requests from your customers and deliver them something. It could be service or a technology product or whatever. So, the best way is to collect that data. You can either talk to them on the phone or you can get them to send you emails. But once you try to categorize this data and you want to navigate within it easily, it's actually where the forms come in to play because you make people reach you with a structured data set and it makes your life much easier.11:36 - You need to keep a very heavy schedule. You need to kind of put stuff on your agenda, et cetera. That's actually for the podcast. You can just do all of them in Jotform. So, you can give your attendees, let's say, or people trying to reach out a form and that would get edited onto your calendar automatically, and you can just move them out, respond them over that calendar that we provide. It's like having your own assistant. Someone addicted to porn, someone addicted to overeating, whatever the addictions or problems in life, you can't overcome it until you're aware of it. So, for me, I've always had pretty good self-awareness, probably to my detriment at times, because I'm overly analyzing what people may think. As a matter of fact, I was talking with one of my best friends this morning. We meet every week for coffee and we're working through the Think and Grow Rich Workbook right now, which by the way, I'd highly recommend everybody to go through. He's a mindset coach. And so, we were going through that today. And one of the things that we read through in the workbook this week was a failure inventory and going through things where you could potentially fail if you don't keep it in check.12:16 - There's always pain in change. It may not be immense pain, but there's some pain in change. I mean, I'm right-handed and brush my teeth on the right hand everyday. But if for some reason my right hand is not available and hurt and I have to brush with my left, that change is painful, and can be because I might hit my gums, or anytime we change, there's pain in it. But when the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, that's when change occurs.23:05 - Well, I think it's just minimizing at the base level. It's just getting your open cycles down to a manageable thing. And then once you realize and understand what causes stress is open cycles, if you start feeling stressed, you know what it's related to and you can do a quick open cycles inventory. Certainly, it doesn't take three hours once you know what you're doing. Because you can go, "What is on my list I need to take care of?" I mean, I've got my date, my planner, right here on the desk next to me, and in this planner, there's a list of 10 or 12 things that I need to get done this week. That's all I do.
