Vane and Jorge sit with the insightful Dr. Lynn Comella, Associate Professor, Gender and Sexuality Studies at University of Nevada-Las Vegas (how appropriate!), and author of "Vibrator Nation: How Feminist Sex-Toy Stores Changed the Business of Pleasure" to get real about porn. This episode came about after we read Dr. Comella's response to renowned anti-porn feminist, Dr. Gail Dines, and Vane expressed being a "porn skeptic" after seeing the current state of porn. Discussion includes: can porn be feminist? Is porn affecting and even hurting sexual interactions today, or is it an empowering form of media? “Self-care has been defined as the process of establishing behaviors to ensure holistic well-being of oneself, to promote health, and actively manage illness when it occurs.[1] Individuals engage in some form of self-care daily with food choices, exercise, sleep, reading and dental care.[1] Self-care is not only a solo activity as the community—a group that supports the person performing self-care—overall plays a large role in access to, implementation of, and success of self-care activities.” “Feminist Porn As A Genre Feminist porn as a “genre” is also fairly tricky to define as it includes so many types of sex acts, orientations, performers and methods. “Gonzo” porn – which has no plot and often the director is part of the action – is quite common, as is “documentary-style” shooting where the performers have whatever sex they like without direction. At the same time, you'll find your fair share of feature-style films with elaborate storylines and great acting. Queer and lesbian porn has come to be heavily associated with it but there's also plenty of heterosexual-themed films as well. Feminist porn doesn't discriminate when it comes to what sex it depicts. Films can show softcore, soft-focus, romantized sex or full-on hardcore, fisting, female ejaculation or intense kink. It can happily depict rough sex, BDSM, choking, spitting, facial cumshots or anything else Gail Dines regularly attributes to “degrading porn”. The sex acts themselves are not a defining feature; an emphasis on agency and enthusiastic consent – especially when it comes to “extreme” porn – takes precedence. Female-identified directors have tended to dominate feminist porn but it's not an exclusive club – male-identified directors have described their porn as feminist as well. And of course, trans and non-binary people feature as prominent creators of feminist porn content.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Radical feminist, activist and writer Elly Arrow joins me today to discuss the many harms of pornography and prostitution. Elly shares her journey from liberal feminism into radical feminism after seeing the real and brutal harms pornography inflicted on women and girls in her life. We cover problems with the term ‘sex worker' and other trade myths, the intentional erosion of boundaries and agency for women in the sex trade, and the bizarre belief that regulating the industry will protect women from the dehumanizing and medically dangerous conditions inherent in the trade. We also speak of the loneliness of sex buyers, the correlations between the sex trade, surrogacy and obstetric abuse and the relationship between marginalized demographics and sex trade capitalism. Elly advocates for the abolition of the sex industry and blogs extensively on The Invisible Man - Germany, where you can find quotes, analyses, statistics, and more on the men who create the demand for the sex trade in the first place. She educates on the intersection of female poverty, lack of rights for migrant women, intimate partner violence and sexual trauma. In this exciting episode of KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION, Donna looks back at Season One and culls the best advice for raising kids from her favorite celebrity friends. Award winning actress Dallas Bryce Howard is adamant that fathers should be just as involved in raising kids as mothers, despite the stigma that says otherwise. In her documentary “Dad” her message is that men are more than providers. They are caretakers. Actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar has clear expectations for his children around behavior: good manners and neat bedrooms. “No” means “no” in his household. Actor Chris Noth believes in discipline. His son isn’t allowed to have a cell phone and his screen time is carefully monitored. Dr. Gail Dines applauds Noth’s decisions. The psychologist says that as soon as a kids have access to a cell phone, the dangerous world of the internet is right in front of them.  This episode contains guidance on a variety of situations that come up in families, but all four segments are based on the universal concern for our young.  http://www.donnatetreault.com/#welcome https://twitter.com/donnatetreault https://www.instagram.com/donnatetreault/?hl=en   https://www.instagram.com/stage29podcasts/    https://twitter.com/stage29podcasts    https://www.facebook.com/Stage29Podcasts      https://www.instagram.com/brycedhoward/ https://www.facebook.com/brycedallashoward https://twitter.com/mpg https://www.instagram.com/mpgosselaar/?hl=en  https://twitter.com/mpg   https://www.instagram.com/chrisnothofficial/   https://twitter.com/gaildines https://www.facebook.com/gaildines Learn more about your ad choices. Every second in America 30,000 people are watching porn, and every day 40 million people visit porn sites. Online porn sites get more visitors each month than Netflix, Amazon and Twitter combined. About 1/3 of all web downloads in the United States are porn related. 1/3 of kids say they've seen porn by the age of 12 and the negative impact of this can be seen in teen pregnancies, low self-esteem and depression. My First guest, Gail Dines is a specialist in the study of pornography, Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Wheelock College in Boston. She is also the author of “Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality”. Gail says developing sexual templates in children are vulnerable to the negative impacts of early exposure to pornography. It's not just girls who are vulnerable, boys too can be traumatized and create unhealthy ideas of what sex is supposed to be, including violence and misogynistic scenarios. Porn talk is the new sex talk and we're going to find out from Gail why we must have this talk with our kids. Gail says if we as parents don’t talk to them, somebody else will. And potentially, that person could be a predator. Then we welcome Pattie Fitzgerald. She's the founder of Safety Ever After, a child safety educator, family coach and former preschool teacher. She penned the book, “No Trespassing: This Is My Body”. Pattie says we need to start teaching our kids about boundaries and ownership of their bodies when they are as young as two years old. She stresses that if don’t teach kids to own their bodies, they’ll grow up to make assumptions and be vulnerable to porn addiction and feelings of shame and low self-esteem. She wants to teach children that they are the bosses of their bodies. Pattie says 90% of children know their abusers and 35% are within the family. She reveals her simple “Stop-Go-Tell” method for children and how it can empower them to say no and stop an unwanted and possibly dangerous situation. Pattie says parents who come to her for help don't just want tips on how to talk to their children about pornography and sex; they want her to write the whole script. Many parents are very uncomfortable having this conversation. But after listening to this episode the hope is that you will feel empowered and walk away with some useful tools on how you can talk to your child about pornography and sex and teach them to have the confidence to create boundaries and make the right decision when it comes to their bodies. https://www.instagram.com/stage29podcasts https://twitter.com/stage29podcasts https://www.facebook.com/Stage29Podcasts/ Learn more about your ad choices. What is Pornhub? A Parent's Guide

Hey parents! Do you know what Pornhub is? Chances are, your kids know enough about it to carry on a conversation around the lunch table at school. Are you prepared to fight back against this multi-million-dollar monstrosity? We’ve recently had an epiphany—a lightbulb moment if you will. Since we fight porn every day, we took it for granted that everyone knows what Pornhub is, but apparently that’s not the case! (See story below.) Well … you can’t stop an enemy if you don’t know it exists. So today we’re giving you the parent’s definitive guide to Pornhub.  Can’t fight what you don’t know A few weeks ago Marilyn was in a women's meeting. The ladies were talking generally about choices, and then they started discussing how you might respond if you see a threat creeping in on someone or something you love. The first thing is to decide between doing something or nothing, right?  She had an example to share, so she spoke up:  My heart was bursting, because a friend of mine had told me the day before how she had immediately acted on what she perceived as a threat to her whole community. Recently, a couple local radio hosts in our area had been promoting Pornhub on their show—a kind of joke, or a publicity stunt. I wrote about one such incident on our blog [add link].  Well, when my friend heard this happen on a separate occasion she immediately pulled over (she was driving at the time) and wrote detailed notes on her phone about what she had heard on the radio. Then as soon as she got home, she emailed the radio host and lodged a formal complaint with the broadcasting standards council. Yes!!! Citizens in Action! (That’s what we love to see! Just like we were talking about in our episode with Melissa Blair, Campaign for a Porn-free Childhood.) I thought my women friends  would be stoked. To be honest, they all looked kind of underwhelmed. That was, until one of them blurted out. “What’s Pornhub?” (Bless her heart for asking!) I was stunned. I had assumed everyone knew about Pornhub—even the blue-hairs in our group. As Forbes magazine points out:  [QUOTE]“With page stat numbers in the billions, it's hard to imagine that there are people on this planet somehow not viewing or uploading content to Pornhub. I looked around and I saw many women (younger and older), with the same confused look, waiting for my response. To be clear, they all know pornography is accessable on the web. They just had no idea that it was operating as an efficient above-ground industry. Related Content: Radio Station Promotes Pornography: 3 Easy Ways to Take Action Maybe you already know a bit about how the porn industry operates online. Maybe this is news to you. No matter what knowledge-base you’re starting at, this episode has take-aways for every person concerned with protecting kids from internet pornography. Don’t forget to subscribe to Media Savvy Moms on your favourite podcasting platform! What is Pornhub? [4:20] Pornhub is the largest pornographic video-sharing platform in the world. Oh, and it’s free! Think YouTube, except exclusively for hardcore pornography.  [6:15] Learn about MindGeek, the sneaky Montreal based company that is monopolizing the online porn industry. However, if you visit their corporate website, you’d have no idea what they actually do. [7:55] Having trouble believing porn is such a big industry? Here are some statistics from Forbes magazine. Pornhub is very proud and very public about their numbers. Remember, this is just one website. In 2019, they boasted... 42 billion visits to Pornhub 115 million visitors a day 6.8 million videos were uploaded  1.36 million hours of new content (=169 years)  98,000 new models (as in, amature porn stars ... these are human beings)  [10:10] Learn about Pornhub’s mission to normalize porn consumption through methods like academic scholarships, attempts to sponsor sports teams, and--of course--advertising. (Did you hear about the outrageous Pornhub billboard on Times Square?) In the end, it’s all about the money. How is Pornhub targeting our kids? [13:30] Have you witnessed the cuteness overload that is “Baby Yoda” from the hit series Mandalorian? Learn how the Pornhub logo became associated with this tiny tot in a viral meme that normalizes porn use by our children.   [18:45] Gail Dines from Culture Reframed always says “follow the breadcrumb trail of an average 11-year old” to find out what is available to our children online. Remember, there is no age gate on Pornhub. Unfortunately, if our kids aren’t accessing this site, then their friends at school probably are. That is why we need to have open conversations with our kids! [19:35] How many clicks do you think it takes for a teen to get from SnapChat to Pornhub? Protect Young Eyes tried this experiment with a test phone and posted the results. Listen to find out what they learned. Related Content: Want to protect your kids while they’re using their devices? Click here to get a FREE 30-day trial of the Bark App, or download Bark at the app store and apply the code MEDIASAVVY at checkout. [21:00] When we looked at the statistics, most people (83%) were accessing Pornhub on mobile devices. But do you know what device is overlooked as an access portal  when it comes to KIDS and porn in the home? It’s actually gaming consoles.  Related content: Tech for the Holidays with Sarah Siegand. And the stats for Pornhub back this up, too:  “It should be noted that users were accessing Pornhub and watching porn on their game consoles as well. Sony Playstation led the pack with 51.5% of game console traffic … Xbox traffic accounted for 34.7%.” (Forbes) How can we fight back? [23:15] Tune in for some practical tips that you can apply in your own home!  [26:25] Okay, we’ll give you one spoiler. Many of the solutions to this problem go back to basics, like creating a safe place to talk about ANYTHING with our kids. (Remember our Construction Site episode?)  Related Content: Teens Reveal 8 Ways to Build Up the Courage to Resist Porn Start a conversation So … now you know what Pornhub is and how it is targeting kids. But what about your friends? Do they know? This week, ask another parent, “Do you know what I learned about PornHub this week?” Have your camera ready, ‘cause you’ll want to capture the look on their face when you say that! ” Or if you’re feeling extra ambitious, bring it up at parent group, like Marilyn did! The mainstream has become increasingly outspoken about the increasingly violent and ubiquitous 97 billion dollar Pornography industry which makes more than the top tech companies combined with 3 billion made annually on child porn. Time Magazine's recent cover story “Porn and the Threat to Virility” examines how men who watched porn as children and teenagers have started a movement against porn. But ironically within the feminist community there are some feminists who defend pornography and attack the voices of radical anti porn activists. Today, we will hear a talk by anti-porn activist and scholar Gail Dines, professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Wheelock College, and author of “Pornland: How Porn has Hijacked our Sexuality.” In a talk titled “From the Personal Is Political to the Personal is Personal: Neo-Liberalism and the Defanging of Feminism.” Gail Dines, explores how mainstream feminism has lost its way by fighting for the individual rights of a small group of elite white women instead of the collective liberation of all women. Dines argues that some third wave feminism offers a pseudo-empowerment to women who conform to the narrow standards of femininity set by porn culture. She calls for a feminism that is unapologetically fierce in its commitment to radical social change. The post Gail Dines talks about the violence of pornography appeared first on KPFA.
