The holidays are upon us accompanied by all the expectations of creating picture-perfect, festive memories for you and your family. For divorced parents, however, this can be a nightmare of navigating what your kids want, what relatives want and what you want. Forget all of that, says Dr. Elizabeth Cohen, a clinical psychologist who specializes in helping parents discover a positive approach to divorce. “Give yourself so much grace and opportunity to learn. If this holiday season, something doesn't work, then you learn for next time what you want to do,” she says. “The holidays come every year.” On this episode of Divorce, Healthy!, Elizabeth discusses the upcoming holiday dread for divorcees with host Ashley-Nicole Russell. The important thing, Dr. Cohen says, is that parents focus on creating safe and connected time with their kids, no matter what that might look like. There's no need to live up to unrealistic expectations. If you feel better about your life after divorce, you will be happier and calmer around the holidays as well, and your kids will feel happier and calmer. “There are invisible gifts that you are giving your child by ending a relationship that's not working for you,” she says.

Dawson co-created the Early Start Denver Model, an early autism intervention shown to improve behavioral outcomes, which has been translated into 17 languages and is used worldwide. Her work showed for the first time that early intervention can normalize aspects of brain activity in children with autism, changing the field's view of brain plasticity in autism, a finding recognized by TIME Magazine as one of the top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2012. A strong advocate for persons with autism, Dawson has testified a number of times before the US Congress in support of major autism legislation and was appointed by the U.S. Secretary for Health and Human Services for two terms to the DHHS IACC. Hey parents! Do you know what Pornhub is? Chances are, your kids know enough about it to carry on a conversation around the lunch table at school. Are you prepared to fight back against this multi-million-dollar monstrosity? We’ve recently had an epiphany—a lightbulb moment if you will. Since we fight porn every day, we took it for granted that everyone knows what Pornhub is, but apparently that’s not the case! (See story below.) Well … you can’t stop an enemy if you don’t know it exists. So today we’re giving you the parent’s definitive guide to Pornhub. Can’t fight what you don’t know A few weeks ago Marilyn was in a women's meeting. The ladies were talking generally about choices, and then they started discussing how you might respond if you see a threat creeping in on someone or something you love. The first thing is to decide between doing something or nothing, right? She had an example to share, so she spoke up: My heart was bursting, because a friend of mine had told me the day before how she had immediately acted on what she perceived as a threat to her whole community. Recently, a couple local radio hosts in our area had been promoting Pornhub on their show—a kind of joke, or a publicity stunt. I wrote about one such incident on our blog [add link]. Well, when my friend heard this happen on a separate occasion she immediately pulled over (she was driving at the time) and wrote detailed notes on her phone about what she had heard on the radio. Then as soon as she got home, she emailed the radio host and lodged a formal complaint with the broadcasting standards council. Yes!!! Citizens in Action! (That’s what we love to see! Just like we were talking about in our episode with Melissa Blair, Campaign for a Porn-free Childhood.) I thought my women friends would be stoked. To be honest, they all looked kind of underwhelmed. That was, until one of them blurted out. “What’s Pornhub?” (Bless her heart for asking!) I was stunned. I had assumed everyone knew about Pornhub—even the blue-hairs in our group. As Forbes magazine points out: [QUOTE]“With page stat numbers in the billions, it's hard to imagine that there are people on this planet somehow not viewing or uploading content to Pornhub. I looked around and I saw many women (younger and older), with the same confused look, waiting for my response. To be clear, they all know pornography is accessable on the web. They just had no idea that it was operating as an efficient above-ground industry. Related Content: Radio Station Promotes Pornography: 3 Easy Ways to Take Action Maybe you already know a bit about how the porn industry operates online. Maybe this is news to you. No matter what knowledge-base you’re starting at, this episode has take-aways for every person concerned with protecting kids from internet pornography. Don’t forget to subscribe to Media Savvy Moms on your favourite podcasting platform! What is Pornhub? [4:20] Pornhub is the largest pornographic video-sharing platform in the world. Oh, and it’s free! Think YouTube, except exclusively for hardcore pornography. [6:15] Learn about MindGeek, the sneaky Montreal based company that is monopolizing the online porn industry. However, if you visit their corporate website, you’d have no idea what they actually do. [7:55] Having trouble believing porn is such a big industry? Here are some statistics from Forbes magazine. Pornhub is very proud and very public about their numbers. Remember, this is just one website. In 2019, they boasted... 42 billion visits to Pornhub 115 million visitors a day 6.8 million videos were uploaded 1.36 million hours of new content (=169 years) 98,000 new models (as in, amature porn stars ... these are human beings) [10:10] Learn about Pornhub’s mission to normalize porn consumption through methods like academic scholarships, attempts to sponsor sports teams, and--of course--advertising. (Did you hear about the outrageous Pornhub billboard on Times Square?) In the end, it’s all about the money. How is Pornhub targeting our kids? [13:30] Have you witnessed the cuteness overload that is “Baby Yoda” from the hit series Mandalorian? Learn how the Pornhub logo became associated with this tiny tot in a viral meme that normalizes porn use by our children. [18:45] Gail Dines from Culture Reframed always says “follow the breadcrumb trail of an average 11-year old” to find out what is available to our children online. Remember, there is no age gate on Pornhub. Unfortunately, if our kids aren’t accessing this site, then their friends at school probably are. That is why we need to have open conversations with our kids! [19:35] How many clicks do you think it takes for a teen to get from SnapChat to Pornhub? Protect Young Eyes tried this experiment with a test phone and posted the results. Listen to find out what they learned. Related Content: Want to protect your kids while they’re using their devices? Click here to get a FREE 30-day trial of the Bark App, or download Bark at the app store and apply the code MEDIASAVVY at checkout. [21:00] When we looked at the statistics, most people (83%) were accessing Pornhub on mobile devices. But do you know what device is overlooked as an access portal when it comes to KIDS and porn in the home? It’s actually gaming consoles. Related content: Tech for the Holidays with Sarah Siegand. And the stats for Pornhub back this up, too: “It should be noted that users were accessing Pornhub and watching porn on their game consoles as well. Sony Playstation led the pack with 51.5% of game console traffic … Xbox traffic accounted for 34.7%.” (Forbes) How can we fight back? [23:15] Tune in for some practical tips that you can apply in your own home! [26:25] Okay, we’ll give you one spoiler. Many of the solutions to this problem go back to basics, like creating a safe place to talk about ANYTHING with our kids. (Remember our Construction Site episode?) Related Content: Teens Reveal 8 Ways to Build Up the Courage to Resist Porn Start a conversation So … now you know what Pornhub is and how it is targeting kids. But what about your friends? Do they know? This week, ask another parent, “Do you know what I learned about PornHub this week?” Have your camera ready, ‘cause you’ll want to capture the look on their face when you say that! ” Or if you’re feeling extra ambitious, bring it up at parent group, like Marilyn did! Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed the show, please leave a positive review or tell a friend! Do you have a question? Today’s guest on Because of Horses is Bob Cacchione — a living legend in the horse world — and one to whom so many owe immense gratitude for founding the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA)! Though the IHSA has helped countless young equestrians explore their competitive riding talents and dreams, their origins were pretty humble. Bob was an 18-year-old sophomore at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey when his parents told him they would no longer pay for his riding. Rather than have that be the end of it, Bob negotiated free use of horses at a local stable in exchange for giving riding lessons, where he then gathered what soon became a competitive team. Next, when he held a show using donated horses, nearby colleges caught wind of the event and what began as a small group of riders soon grew exponentially over the ensuing years. Now, it’s a huge network, including almost 400 colleges across the U.S. and over 8,300 riders in hunt seat equitation, western horsemanship, and reining. Beyond all this though, the organization is about so much more! In a world where show-winners are often those who can afford the finest horses, the IHSA truly levels the playing field. Countless young riders and adult equestrians have Bob to thank for that! In this episode, Bob shares stories of alumni who have gone on to do incredible things in the horse world, gives his take on how he has seen the evolution of youth competition, his predictions on the future of riding, some incredibly touching (and funny!) stories from those who have been involved in the IHSA, and what makes IHSA so remarkable! Topics of Discussion: [:24] About today’s episode with Bob Cacchione. [1:49] Bob shares why what they do at IHSA is so important for the horse community. He also describes how the events themselves are set up and how they level the playing field. [4:52] Bob highlights what’s especially remarkable about IHSA and tells the stories of alumni who have gone on to do incredible things in the horse world! [8:52] Why Bob believes many of those who ride with IHSA go on to remarkable careers in the horse world beyond competing. [12:50] When Bob’s parents stopped paying for his riding lessons at 18, what motivated him to create his own path? [15:22] Elise and Bob discuss the incredibly unique community IHSA is, as well as its broad impact and appeal. [18:34] Bob gives his thoughts on the horse world's evolution as well as his predictions on the future of riding. [20:35] What Bob would like the parents and young riders who listen to Because of Horses to know about IHSA. [22:16] Bob speaks about his retirement from IHSA. [24:05] What does Bob want his legacy to be? [25:45] In a life full of remarkable experiences, what stands out to Bob? [28:08] Has Bob had any “fan” moments when he has met somebody famous in the horse world? [29:31] If Bob could speak to ‘young Bob,’ what would he tell himself at 17 years of age? [31:35] Bob shares some funny and touching stories of meeting people who were involved in IHSA. [38:13] Bob shares some final words on IHSA. [41:45] Elise shares an important announcement about the Because of Horses podcast. Be sure to check out Marko's books as well as his current ministry The Youth Cartel. The books referenced in this Episode are: A Parent's Guide to Understanding Teenage Brains Understanding Your Young Teen As always, you can get in touch with me (Dennis) on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Are you being alienated from your children? Do you understand what Parental Alienation is and what do you do if you find yourself the targeted parent and your children torn from our life. Our show titled is named after the book A Family's Heartbreak - A parent's guide to parental alienation, and today I'm going to speak with the author, Michael Jeffries, to help families better understand Parental Alienation, and it affects. The definition of parental alienation is heartbreakingly simple—one parent deliberately damages, and in some cases destroys, the previously healthy, loving relationship between the child and the child’s other parent. Parental Alienation is harmful to our children's well being. I believe we can stop this destructive behavior if we can just recognize the warning signs and make a choice to not act this way. In this episode of the podcast, I talk to Ron Sandison about the topic of autism. Ron not only has autism himself, he also is an autism advocate. You can find out more about him at his website Spectrum Inclusion. Ron is also the author of A Parent's Guide to Autism: Practical Advice. Biblical Wisdom. My recommended audiobook for this episode is: The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum by Temple Grandin The Autistic Brain is the first book by Temple Grandin that will be neither a memoir nor a book on animals. As always, Temple's ability to cut through the jungle of information and make the science clear is evident with each listen; her skills as a scientist and her original thinking offer some significant new insights into the understanding of autism. Temple Grandin teaches listeners the science of the autistic brain, and with it the history and sociology of autism. By being autistic--by being able to look from the inside out and from the outside in--the author's insights are not just unique, they're groundbreaking. According to Temple, our understanding of autism has been perhaps fundamentally wrong for the past 70 years. You can get this audiobook for FREE with a FREE trial of Audible.

Life teaches us all many lessons; some more than others. Since losing their only child, Roni and her husband, John, have learned what it takes to forge ahead and find new purpose in life; helping others to improve their lives by enhancing their focus on what is actually significant; their children and the other people in their lives. Their beautiful son, Dalton, was with them for 15 years and left for Heaven just after Christmas 2013 due to injuries from an ATV accident. Dalton lived his short life creating smiles, laughter, and happiness by sharing his kind spirit and helping others through tough times. They continue his legacy by counting their blessings for the short time they had him and practicing random acts of kindness in his memory each and every day. Roni and John have been married since 1995 and live in Castle Rock, Colorado. Roni spends most of her time working with real estate clients, yet she's now added speaking to parenting groups, book clubs, and schools, as well as several podcast, radio, and tv programs about the importance of small moments and simple lessons for creating a meaningful life. Any free time is spent with their families in Colorado and Texas, riding ATVs, and camping in sand dunes across the U.S. Roni's books, Parenting At Your Best, A Parent's Guide for Journaling to Their Child, and A Parent's Journal For Their Child are a tribute to Dalton, with anticipation that the stories and advice they offer will inspire others to excellence in their parenting.

In the U.S., there are about 80,000 registered chemicals. Of these, only a few hundred are actually tested for safety, and even that testing is considered inadequate by most toxicologists. Part of the problem is that most chemicals are tested in isolation. In real world application, however, most chemicals are combined with others, and the few studies done on synergetic effects reveal even nontoxic chemicals can become toxic when mixed together. While there are many sources of chemical exposure, our food is a significant one, as most conventionally farmed foods are sprayed with pesticides. The chemical industry would have you believe pesticide residues on food is of no major concern. Learn more at mercola.com

Dr. Michael Schreeinga is an award-winning research psychiatrist, and author of "They'll Never Be the Same, A Parent's Guide to PTSD in Youth". Very important reading for parents and educators to provide the information needed to advocate for our kids.

When computer games are a problem for parents, it's usually because a child/teen has become obsessed and no longer shows interest in "family time." Even when family time isn't impacted, parents may have other questions like: • "Is my child addicted to computer games?" • "Are violent games encouraging my child to be violent and/or desensitizing him to violence?" • "Is all this screen time hurting my child's social development?" Dr. Rachel Kowert, psychologist, online gamer, and author of "A Parent's Guide to Video Games: The essential guide to understanding how video games impact your child's physical, social, and psychological well-being", makes a strong case for the positive impact of computer games and why parents may not need to worry about their kids' love of gaming. About Dr. Rachel Kowert (@DrRachelKowert) Dr. Kowert's research is primarily focused on the social impact of online games. This includes addressing the anecdotal claim that online game players are socially different/deficient as compared to offline or non-players, examining the impact of online video game play on offline friendship networks, and evaluating the tangible social benefits of online game play. In the final chapter in our three-part series (click here for Part 1 about good sleep, and here for Part 2 about the antidote to anxiety), The Modern Parent's Guide to Surviving This Election Cycle, I share about how you can become as educated as possible on the candidates… Because knowledge IS power. I'll be voting a week from today – I share in this episode about why voting at all is so important to me, having only been able to vote in the last three presidential elections – and I hope you will vote too. In this series, I'm also working really hard to be completely unbiased… I don't care WHO you vote for. I just care that you go in with good information and actually vote. Click weturnedoutokay.com/115 for notes and links to the unbiased websites I worked so hard to find for you (we stay well away from the candidates' own sites, as well as any site that hints at bias); get informed and then please go vote!
According to this article last week at Vox.com, 55% of voters were "disgusted" with the campaign… back in September. I'm betting that that number has gone up a bit as this election has changed from PG to R-rated. And if we are that freaked out – how are our kids? When our fear and upset level goes up, so does theirs. You can make both you and your kids feel better by coming to my FREE online class: How to Parent Young Children in this Mixed-up, Crazy World I'll teach you how to: – Coach your kids through the election insanity – Help them feel less anxious – Lessen your own anxiety You can make "Everybody Sucks 2016" a little better for yourself and your kids – Go to weturnedoutokay.com and sign up for the October 20 (this coming Thursday) class! I can help you help your kids through the election craziness, Thursday October 20 at 7 PM Eastern standard Time. See you in class!
How bad is the vague sense of fear, of atmospheric worry, in your life? Because if you feel it, you can bet that your child is getting those vibes from you (and now she's worrying, too.) It's very difficult to escape the news and mudslinging around this contentious election. That's what started me thinking about how to help you feel better during this time of year when it always seems to feel a bit more "serious" than just a few weeks ago – but this year seems amplified by an order of magnitude. So, here's the first of three parts of The Modern Parent's Guide to Living Through This Election! Click weturnedoutokay.com/109 to listen to this episode and to read more about the one thing – THE basic building block – around which we can start to knock back worry and anxiety in our lives, and therefore the lives of our kids.
Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.
The term "special education" is typically used to define "instruction/classes for children with special needs because of physical or learning problems." But what about the special needs of gifted kids? And who falls into that category? The classic definition states that gifted children are those with unusual ability or potential in any one or more of 4-5 areas. Those are: intellect, academics, creativity, performing arts, or leadership. How much ability? How much potential? According to Dr. Jim Webb, author of "A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children", relying solely on that definition is like asking "how dark does dark blue have to be before it is navy blue or darker?" Annie talks with Jim about gifted kids and how parents can best help them understand and use their gifts. About Jim Webb (@SENG_gifted) James T. Webb, Ph.D., ABPP-Cl, a licensed and board-certified psychologist, has been recognized as one of the 25 most influential psychologists nationally on gifted education. In 1981, Dr. Webb established SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted), a national nonprofit organization that provides information, training, conferences, and workshops to parents and educators of gifted children, and he remains as Chair of SENG's Professional Advisory Committee. For years people have come to me when they find a friend or a relative has a child with a diagnosis of Down Syndrome. They have come to me because they know my daughter Uma, (now 10 years old) has Down Syndrome. I am happy to say I am FINALLY doing a show on this topic. I talk with financial consultant, public speaker and author Robin Taub about her book "A Parent's Guide to Raising Money-Smart Kids" and what advice she would give to parents about teaching their kids about personal finance at any age. Long episode description: I was lucky enough to meet Robin Taub at the Canadian Personal Finance Conference in Toronto this fall, and I’m so glad I did. She spoke at the conference about how she penned and published her best-selling book A Parent’s Guide to Raising Money-Smart Kids and how she went from chartered accountant to public speaker, author and personal finance media spokesperson. Although I don’t have kids (and don’t plan on starting a family for a few years yet), raising money-smart kids is one topic I knew I needed to cover on the podcast. I think for all of us to become smarter with our money, we need to be educated about it. And the sooner we learn the fundamentals of personal finance in life, the better chance we have at becoming successful and financially stable adults. I know for a fact then when I do have kids, I don’t want money to be a taboo subject. I want us to talk about it openly so they will have all the facts before they head off to college. We talked a lot about Robin’s book in this episode, largely because she outlined how to teach your kids about money so well. She talks about what to talk about to your kids at different ages and how this personal finance education can truly empower your kids and give them confidence. Like I said at the start of this episode, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a parent or is planning to be. You can buy the book online or check it out at your local library. Getting through adolescence is as hard for parents as it is for teens--maybe harder. First you have to deal with losing the wonderful loving child you once had. Then you have to do battle with this new stranger. Finally, you have to embrace a new independent young adult who may have little time for you. Loss, conflict and acceptance are all part of the process. Learn how to cope. Carl E. Pickhardt Ph.D., Weekly blog: "Surviving (your child's) Adolescence", for PSYCHOLOGY TODAY and author of several books, including SURVIVING YOUR CHILD'S ADOLESCENCE. Susan M. Parenting books touting new philosophies are widely available. Raelynn Maloney's book, Waking Up: A Parent's Guide to Mindful Awareness and Connection (Companion Press, 2011) is not that kind of book. Rather, her message to parents is simple. Using mindfulness is not meant to replace existing parenting philosophies. It is meant to augment what parents are currently doing. Dr. Maloney first encourages and helps parents understand problematic behavior before guiding them through daily activities that are meant to increase moment-to-moment awareness of parent-child interactions. This awareness is meant to help parents be in the moment with their children, rather than 10 steps ahead of the moment. How does being in the moment with your child help you as a parent? Dr. Maloney walks the audience through the importance of mindfulness and how it can be used to improve your relationship with your child, thus tackling problematic child behavior in a different way than most other books on parenting.
