Trent R. Nelson speaks with Michelle Ownbey, publisher of the Springfield Business Journal and Illinois Times, about the latest happenings in the Springfield business community and all of the relevant bits fit for the greater community to learn about. Topics Discussed In This Interview: A distribution center employing 150 to 200 full-time workers at a warehouse the size of almost four football fields would be built along Interstate 55 near the Chatham exit, based on a proposal Springfield zoning officials will consider June 20.   Owners Brian and Melissa Reilly are expanding Cured Catering again, this time by building a new 10,000-square-foot facility.   Structural problems have festered for years at Springfield's tallest apartment building, but court action to fix at least one of the issues at Lincoln Tower Apartments could be coming in the next few months. Both the city of Springfield and the adjacent property owner have filed lawsuits trying to force the owner to make repairs:   After losing more than 9% of its population in recent years, the Jacksonville Regional Economic Development Corporation is offering $5,000 and other incentives to professionals willing to relocate to the community.   Subscribe to the Springfield Business Journal and their weekly Biz Bites email newsletter.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Effect on Emotions Mindfulness has helped me recognize that my emotions feel different when they're regulated versus not regulated. So the intensity of emotions isn't what's a problem, it's my body's ability to process that emotion so that I'm still functioning in a way that is consistent with my values and priorities. Thoughts on Breathing Well, breathing is at the heart of our being. It is the first thing we do and one of the last things we do in life. And so breathing influences everything, both physiologically as well as emotionally. So when we become aware of our breath and intentionally slow it or change it in certain ways, then we experience a different awareness of ourselves. As a result, I am very mindful of the way I breathe. And one of the mistakes I see very often when people are anxious is they think if they take a big, deep breath, it'll help calm them. And that's actually. Not true. Taking a slow out breath is much more calming. When I was in high school, my younger sister, who had some learning disabilities, was being bullied by another girl. This girl was bigger and threatened to hurt my sister physically. Even though I was only a year older and couldn't physically defend myself, I knew I had to protect my sister. I stayed calm, spoke assertively, and convinced the bully that violence wasn't the answer. I had to be mindful of my own emotions and the situation. Surprisingly, it worked, and the bully and my sister became friends. It taught me the power of staying composed in challenging moments.. Hello and welcome to Rad Mom Radio, a podcast dedicated to moms and all their favorite topics – my name's Natalie and I'm your host.Hello and welcome back to the podcast, as always, thank you for joining me for this episode. This week my guest is Dr. Melissa Reilly – she is a Clinical Psychologist and a motherhood coach based in Lititz, Pennsylvania. In her work as a therapist, Melissa observed that her clients that were moms without a healthy mom relationship of their own, were experiencing more intense symptoms of depression and anxiety. This led her to develop her coaching program – Moms Without a Mom.Melissa herself is a mom without a mom and is able to empathize with mothers who experience the loss of their mothers due to physical distance, estrangement, and death. I reached out to Melissa about doing this episode after reading a bit about the focus of her coaching program – mostly because I myself am a mom without a mom – due to estrangement – and I have noticed that this is a topic that is not talked about openly. I'm not a huge fan of sharing a lot of information about myself, I tend to be pretty reserved. But I am a firm believer in the idea that pain has to come to the surface to be healed. The things that we put away in boxes never really sort themselves out unfortunately. Melissa makes some really good points in this episode about why this moms without a mom situation isn't talked about much, why it's a stigma, and why it's incredibly isolating for mothers. I believe that there are so many of us in the world that struggle with this, and I love that Melissa is dedicating her time and energy to helping these moms. If you yourself are a mom without a mom, for whatever reason, and I think it has to be said that the reason should never be something we're judged for – I think you will find so much value in this episode. I know I learned a lot and it gave me a lot to think about regarding letting more people into my life and allowing people to support and care for me. That is definitely something I struggle with – I lean toward being hyper-independent so that I never have to worry about being let down or disappointed. But something that Melissa said in this episode that is so true, is that we were never meant to do this alone – this being motherhood – it is impossible to be all the things we need to be without some kind of help from the people in our lives. Melissa Reilly is a clinical psychologist and coach for moms without a mom, helping them move from feelings of insecurity, isolation and overwhelm to resilience. Through her personal and professional experience, she has come to recognize that Moms without a mom experience grief as part of their motherhood experience, even if they don't realize it. The relationship moms have had (or didn't have) with their mothers impacts how they see themselves but doesn't define them. She believes it isn't knowledge and skills that create resilience; instead, it is born through overcoming hardship, having a community, and living by one's values. She is honored to walk with moms on their journey to becoming the mom they always wanted to be. Melissa's psychological practice, Shoudt & Reilly Psychological Services, has been serving residents of Berks County, Pennsylvania, for over 22 years. "I became the child who made everything easy. I was really good at sensing how others were, and that just became my role." This is Melissa Reilly's story... Melissa Reilly is a mom, clinical psychologist and coach for other moms who don't have a mom to help them through the challenges of motherhood. She became a mom later in life and experienced several miscarriages and a difficult pregnancy. After her son was born, she realized that she was missing something. She didn't have her mom to talk to about the challenges of motherhood. She started noticing patterns among other women who didn't have a loving mother by their side and decided to make it her mission to provide information and support to these moms. In her coaching program, she focuses on three main areas: grief, building a community and mom identity. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. Melissa's episode embodies several different ways one may experience grief. And as she shares each story, she also provides insight into loss from her perspective as a clinical psychologist. At age 4, her older sister (age 7) died of leukemia. Melissa's earliest memories are related to her sister battling leukemia for eighteen months and being bounced from house to house while her parents were away with her older sister for her healthcare. And, once her sister died, life went on as if it had never happened. Many peers didn't even know she had a sister until she was in high school. Her sister's death was something that was not talked about. Once a young adult, grief was once again a part of her life when her grandfather passed away. It would be the first time she and her sister would begin to talk about their grief from the past and present with each other. However, grief would knock on Melissa's door not once, not twice, but five more times. When Melissa was 25, her mother died unexpectedly at age 51 of a heart attack. Even more heartbreaking in that loss was that she and her mother had had a falling out eight months before her mother's passing, only adding to her grief. Seven months later, her younger sister of a pulmonary embolism. She would then experience three miscarriages before welcoming a healthy baby boy after a challenging and trying pregnancy, where she managed to carry her son to 36 weeks gestation. Melissa goes on to share how not all grief requires medication. She provides insight into her belief around this (a belief we both share) and the four women personality types that women (moms without moms, in particular) would benefit from having in their lives. In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Melissa Reilly. Melissa Reilly is a mom of two boys, clinical psychologist and parent coach who is passionate about helping moms separated from their mother by physical distance, estrangement, or death, move from feelings of insecurity, isolation and overwhelm to a place of resilience. In her own words, Melissa says: “Alone in the hospital room six hours after giving birth I felt an unbelievable emotional pain that felt like part of me was breaking.  I lost my mother 15 years previously and yet in that moment the pain I felt over her absence was as if she had just died again.  I couldn't believe that instead of being consumed with joy I was overwhelmed with grief.  What was wrong with me? Moms separated from their own mother by physical distance, emotional estrangement or death experience a grief process that is rarely identified, let alone talked about.  As a clinical psychologist and mom coach I love to help moms without a mom heal through grief, build community, feel joy in motherhood and move from feelings of isolation, insecurity and overwhelm to a place of confidence and resilience.” To find out more about Melissa, check out her website at www.momswithoutamom.com.

Today, I interview Melissa Reilly whose life began in rural upstate New York with her parents and two sisters. Then one of her sisters became severely ill, and she and the other sister were often dropped off with anyone who could take them, so that their parents could take their ill sister for treatments. Melissa was shy with new people and began keeping her voice to herself, learning to observe people and read situations by their behavior. Her sweet sister died a couple years later, and the family went through a tremendous grieving process. Her parents eventually split up. Her mother began to struggle in many areas, and as Melissa grew up and went off to college and entered a graduate program, the miscommunication and frustration between them eventually led to a falling out. Melissa's mother suddenly died eight months later, and it broke her heart that they hadn't been able to reconcile their relationship beforehand. And just seven months after that, her other sister also passed away suddenly after a long struggle with her mental and physical health. Melissa waited 12 years before feeling ready to start a family of her own. She experienced infertility and losses but finally had a son. Wishing for the support of her mother, she realized that she was finally allowing herself to grieve her mom's loss for the first time. She had no mentor, and she felt like something was wrong with her and that she didn't have a voice. She had a successful career, but becoming a mother broke her. Melissa took a step back and it occurred to her that she wasn't alone after all. She shifted her work, feeling the passion to encourage her community of fellow moms without moms that motherhood is hard but rewarding, and that mothers can lean on each other to ask questions and find the support they need to believe in themselves. ___________ Melissa Reilly, Psy.D. is a mom of two boys, clinical psychologist, and mom coach passionate about helping moms separated from their mother by physical distance, estrangement, or death, move from feelings of insecurity, isolation, and overwhelm to a place of resilience.
