Hosted by media industry analyst Johanna Koljonen, it delves deep into the rapidly evolving film industry. The 2024 Nostradamus Report, titled "Paradox of Hope," delves into the myriad challenges facing the film and TV industries, highlighting broken business models, distribution woes, and the impact of new technologies like virtual production and generative AI. Against a backdrop of global crises, including the climate emergency, the industry grapples with unsustainable practices and the dominance of a few major players. However, amidst the chaos, there's a glimmer of hope as audiences show a preference for quality storytelling. This conversation emphasizes the need for collaboration, innovation in distribution, and a shift towards audience-centric content creation to ensure a sustainable future for the industry. It calls for a departure from competition towards an ecosystem mindset, where shared resources and collaboration foster growth for all. Tabitha Jackson is a consultant and film executive. With a 30-year career in film, arts, and public broadcasting, she is committed to the independent voice, the socio-cultural power of cinema, and a more expansive set of makers, forms and audiences. Recent roles include Director of the Sundance Film Festival, Director of the Sundance Documentary Film Program, and Commissioning Editor/EP (Channel4/Film4). Tabitha is currently a Shorenstein Documentary Film Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The host Johanna Koljonen is a media analyst, broadcaster, and experience designer. She is the author of the Göteborg Film Festival's annual Nostradamus Report on the near future of the screen industries, which is in its 11th year. She lectures internationally on changes in the media sector, and on participation and narrative design. Her background is in public service broadcasting; in 2011, she received the Swedish Grand Journalism Award in the Innovator category. Earlier in the year we covered off the 2023 Media Landscape Report that is put together annually by Medianet and in that podcast we only covered the journalist research that gave us intelligence how the media were going. This podcast today is all about the public relation professional, the communicator, the PRO, the flack that is looking after a business and brand that needs to tell their story. The report is fascinating reading with insights that might just reinforce your beliefs and remind you of the challenges that the industry faces both from a personal and business perspective. Amrita Sidhu the Managing Director of Medianet joins Nic on the podcast again to talk through the findings of the report with the focus on the public relations industry. This report covers everything from burnout to exclusives, from relationships to embargoes, from salaries to top story sources. It is an action-packed podcast covering off the key concerns of the communications industry and its desire to reach best practice. The wonderful news for the PR industry is that the media release still plays a very important role in the sources that media uses for their platforms. This rated in number two just behind direct relationships that media uses to source their content. If you have been feeling the pressure, feeling out of sorts, or just looking for some confirmation about some the practices that you have in place as communicators. The talking points in this podcast will scratch your itch as they are what 300 communications professionals have raised as their challenges, concerns and goals. Some of the great lines that were raised in the podcast from the research “quality of pick up is more valued than quantity” hits home as the communications industry has matured and doesn't just look at volume. Another hot tip for the PR professionals for which many are practicing is that “PRs need to think like journalists” and with 35% of the industry having a start in journalism this is happening all the time. We're all aware that since the pandemic, companies around the world have been facing hiring challenges. Between you and me, how could it be otherwise when every business sector has had massive layoffs? So it's time to quit complaining and get on with it. I'm one of those bosses who has figured out that you have to be in permanent hiring mode and that recruiting young talent who have just finished their studies—if you give them a little time—can quickly prove to be more efficient than an employee who says they have three years of experience but who's bounced from job to job without ever really digging in. That means we'll just have to train them anyway. I can hear you saying, what? You train employees who might very well not stay with NATA PR? And my answer is yes! Plenty of them are going to leave, often six months or a year in, whether we train them or not. Yet I have to say, since I've made peace with constantly training and hiring, more than 70% of our new hires have stayed with us for more than a year. And if they do leave, it's often to go back to school, to travel since that wasn't an option for this new generation, or sometimes to choose another profession. I too benefit from this ongoing training by rethinking every move we make at NATA PR and how we can develop processes to make what we do here crystal-clear and easy. And you know what? My training sessions with my employees have become the basis of the NATA PR SCHOOL, where I teach you media relations, simplified. The first thing we do with our young hires is: Show them a completed activity report. This is often an annual report that shows the number of interviews, articles and mentions we got for a client. Step two: Teach them what we did to get those results (e.g. nine press releases + products + two virtual presentations). Step three: Bring them to the front or centre stage to draft an initial email introducing a product, service or company—what we call the brief—which they'll then send out in an email. Centre stage is sending emails and sometimes making phone calls. What are we going to say or write? What is essential? That's already 50% of the work. The next step—Step 3 in our model—is to identify what I call the “real” influencers. It's just a question of finding who's interested in the product or service you're selling. Yes, we have powerful tools to run media searches, but just like you, we'll Google it. Sometimes, reaching out three times to journalists/influencers whom we've done research on to find out if they've recently written about the same type of subject is better than sending out a thousand cold emails to a list of contacts you got from a friend. According to CISION's annual State of the Media Report, the #1 complaint of journalists is the low volume of interesting emails (barely 25%) based on the business sectors they write about. So you'll understand that there's no point in sending them an email about a new clothing collection when they only write about electric cars. But will you get more from them if the information you're sending them is related to the topics they cover? So now it's your turn to include simplified PR in your marketing plan. Enrol in our programme and I'll teach you our fast and effective method that will only take an hour or two of your time each week. Clients have told us that trendy young agencies no longer use press releases to reach journalists or influencers. I was obviously very surprised and, I admit, worried. Certainly, the press release – like everything around us – has gone digital. Sent out by e-mail, it's still the agency's #1 tool. We send out several products during the year, and to me it would be unthinkable to do so without a press release! So, I continued my research and consulted the annual publication from CISION: The State of the Media Report. It states that 63% of respondents said they wanted a press release from public relations professionals. This figure was more than 70% in some European countries. Journalists love the press release. Media professionals have ranked it the most valuable type of content they receive from their PR contacts. They've chosen the press release as their top source. This is nearly universal, with journalists from around the world citing press releases as their most trusted source of information. So here are a few suggestions from the CISON report to make your press release as effective as possible: 45%: Use a clearly stated news hook (often the title) 27%: Tell a story conversationally: avoid technical jargon 17%: Fit in some quality quotes that add depth to the story More than 27% are looking for great images, compared to 13% for video. Use some great pictures, and you'll maximize your chances of a feature! In short, the press release is the number-one tool you need to develop. We have our own techniques at the agency, and we'll teach you our tips for creating simple, effective press releases that get straight to the point. So yes, the press release is alive and well! Contact us! We'll be happy to advise you. Most importantly, get on our mailing lists so you don't miss a thing: www.natapr.com.

These were already turbulent times for journalism, and that was before a global pandemic put issues like trust, bias, and the impact of digital technology into even sharper focus. Cision has published its 2020 State of the Media Survey. They received more than 3,000 responses from journalists in print, broadcast, digital, and social media across 15 countries. The results paint a picture of an industry that is coping with new and familiar challenges in the wake of COVID-19 but also shows signs of optimism for the role that journalism will play in the recovery. Seth Gilpin, Product Marketing Manager at Cision, joins Hacks and Flacks to cover the major insights from the survey, including important lessons that PR and communications professionals need to know. The Cameroonian army has denied media reports that nine soldiers have been arrested in connection with a military operation last month in which more than 20 civilians were allegedly killed. Defence officials initially said five civilians died after being accidentally caught in crossfire between the military and separatist rebels in the western village of Ngarbuh. However human rights groups said Cameroonian soldiers and armed ethnic Fulani went from house to house shooting dead the residents, including 13 children. President Paul Biya ordered an investigation into the incident after several countries, including the US and France, condemned the killings. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices. Dear Friends ! Now as it is estimated that about 40% votes in India would be influenced by Social Media , every Political party in India have opened special Social Media Cells to suite their respective interest .Its natural that there would be many well designed Social Media Postings being manufactured to suit the respective parties . We need to be careful while sharing them in our Timeline and pages . Please dont forward any Political Messages from these cells or individuals representing these cells unless you find them to be really worth in the best interest of the Nation . The parties would try to use us and our contacts to spread their messages . In the process of sharing their messages we might lose friends in the platform . Lets not open ourselves to be used by sharing every post that comes to our timeline . Lets Scan them like a Swan and share only that which we have understood well to be Worth for the Nation Building .with regards, Santakar Chelapila

On this week’s #MediaSnack we mark the one-year anniversary of the landmark Media Transparency Report published by the Association of National Advertisers on 7th June 2016. In the last few weeks, we’ve been counting down to this date and considering the various impacts and changes that have been triggered by the report. This week we devote the episode to Media Technology and consider what’s happened in the previous 12 months and what are likely to be the changes we will see for the future. It is hard to think of anything that is transforming marketing and media more than technology, and the last year has seen some dramatic changes both in the technology market and also interestingly the attitude and behaviours of marketers towards data and technology. We discuss how data and analytics are no longer a fringe consideration or something which marketers are happy to automatically outsource to third parties, we have observed and consulted with many advertisers this year looking to get control of their own data, build analytics capabilities and start to understand the impact that media investments make on business outcomes. Tom and David can see a clear trend for advertisers wanting these skills to be far more within their own control, blending customer data, marketing campaign data and their own business KPIs to have (sometimes for the first time) a perspective on the VALUE of media not just the price. This has a beautiful knock on effect into how media will be bought and sold in the future, because once the buyer (the advertiser) knows the value of media then they know clearly the price they are prepared to pay for it. In a world where technology is also transforming the media buying market, making it more transparent and subject to supply and demand (auction) pricing, then the buyer demand can properly set the price. We expect that technology will slowly revolutionise the media buying market to a point where is becomes fully open, democratic and transparent – a simple auction based marketplace where buyers and sellers interact to set a price defined only by supply and demand, rather than a vendor’s rate-card or agency mark-up. In that world, buying at scale ceases to give competitive advantage, whilst buying smarter (by using data and analytics) is where competitive advantage in media will lie. In the last year we have also seen massive progress in accountability and measurement for media investments. The ANA report triggered more interest amongst senior marketers for media dollars to be held to account and that has required better standards and processes for measurement. The most vocal advocate for improved measurement has been Marc Pritchard at P&G who has suggested that the company will not be placing media dollars into companies that cannot be measured according to third party verification and consistent standards. This has led many vendors and technologies to seek accreditation from companies like the Media Rating Council (MRC). We have also seen more consistent use of viewability standards and platforms like Google and Facebook opening up to third party audit and not “marking their own homework” The greater demand for transparency and disclosure has lead to changes across the media supply chain, with many of the large agency groups also making moves to provide more transparency operating models, notably Havas’ recent launch of a fully disclosed media buying model, which has met with mixed support from across the industry but a sign that agencies are listening to the new demands for accountability and transparency from advertisers.

Clarion's Meira Svirsky & Elliot Friedland discuss the role of the media in the war on terror after President Trump released a list of 78 attacks he says were under-reported.
Journalists witness and recount the horrific consequences of armed conflict, and are also among the most at risk of being wounded, kidnapped or killed as they carry out this vital role. Journalist Peter Cave, international law academic Dr Emily Crawford and the Australian Red Cross' Director of International Humanitarian Law and Movement Relations Dr Phoebe Wynn-Pope join Richard Aedy, host of ABC Radio National’s Media Report, in discussing the media's role in conflict, the safety of journalists and the changes to conflict reporting brought about by social media.
Six-time Walkley Award-winner Pamela Williams was awarded the Walkley Book Award in 2013 for Killing Fairfax (Harper Collins) – an expose of the fortunes of Fairfax Media inspired by the huge rounds of redundancies and cuts that arrived at the media company after years of challenges to its newspaper business model. Judges described Killing Fairfax as a detailed, insightful and powerful explanation of what happened when digital adventurers ambushed the traditional Australian media empires which had built what had been considered impregnable fortresses out of the revenue from newspaper advertising. The fortresses crumbled – and were hastily subjected to desperate reconstruction plans – as the digital interlopers gained strength, income and influence. As an investigative reporter at The Australian Financial Review, covering politics and the business world, Pamela Williams has won five Walkley Awards since 1994, including the Gold Walkley in 1998 for her coverage of the war on the Australian docks. She has also won the Graham Perkin Journalist of the Year award. She is the author of two best-selling books – the political campaign book, The Victory – on the rise of the Howard Government and the business book, Killing Fairfax, which detailed the collapse of the advertising model which had been the financial backbone of the Fairfax Media Empire. This fascinating discussion will be hosted by Richard Aedy, host of ABC’s Media Report. Richard began his journalistic career in 1988 in New Zealand and has worked as reporter, producer, executive producer and presenter in three countries, including four years at the BBC in London. As a journalist, Richard has covered crime, aviation, industrial affairs, science, health, technology, education, economics, epidemiology, indigenous issues, social change and the media. He has made award-winning documentaries in Colombia, East Timor, the United States and the UK. After more than 20 years, he remains interested in everything. Richard is a former Reuters Foundation Fellow at Oxford, former presenter of The Buzz and he presented Life Matters from 2006 to the end of last year. He is a lifelong media junkie.
