Remember the good ol’ days when a president could be talked out of his worst impulses? So do we. This week the guys had a chance to chat with one of the people our current president should have listened to: Wisconsin Representative (and Marine Intelligence Officer) Mike Gallagher. The Congressman takes us through the poor leadership, political and operational failures, and the dangers we face now that Afghanistan has collapsed. (And if you can, please donate to this GoFundMe campaign to help the family of Rob’s friend Habib.) The hosts also get a chance to chat about progressive colonialism and Peter’s good feeling about the California recall. Music from this week’s podcast: Memory Motel by The Rolling Stones

Season 3 Episode 16 aired on 3 Dec 2020. We are in the final stages of Season 3 now so hang in there it's been a busy year. This episode is unique in that it is perfect in terms of a live take, there were no drop-outs or Wi-Fi issues and all the levels were fine, no editing needed at all. Quite amazing really, the traffic on the road was so backed up I literally was left with 5 min to set up and get on air, it just shows, when you expect the worst you get the best. The show goes live at 7 o'Clock so it was fitting that we started with The Quireboys and their opening track off A Little Bit of What You Fancy called 7 o'Clock, then we had a bit of Kid Rock and some Motörhead. We were all over the place going as heavy as Parkway Drive and as light as Manfred Mann. It looks like it was the first-ever show without an Aussie band, that wasn't intentional it just worked out that way. We also only had 3 SA bands which was also unusual, so in general, this show is a bit different. It was Ozzy Osbourne's birthday so we said hi to him. I really enjoyed Edguy's little dig at the record industry called ‘Life of a Bonus Track'. It's a bit of fun that they recorded in a couple of minutes to satisfy some contractual commitment and it's funny and clever. I also took the gap to hit you with Steel Panther's Death to All But Metal'' and forgot to warn listeners about that little gem. If anyone is offended then I have to say they are probably listening to the wrong radio show J. Check out the video to that track in the website blog section. The highlight for me was a tip of the hat to Wolfgang Van Halen and the way he is handling the death of his much-loved father Edward. We played his track ‘Distance' and then took a listen to the great man himself with a track called Stay Frosty. Another personal highlight was realizing how cool the vocal by Dave Matthews is on The Rolling Stones track Memory Motel. Other than that there was the usual fare, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, W.A.S.P. you know the drill. Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth), Cliff Burton's Base solo Part I was played to remind you that the next Rock Review I do will feature the mighty Metallica. The answer to the inaugural TSORR eclectic thread puzzle was Nita Strauss, I'll tell you why next week. There are 3 connections to Ms. Strauss in S3E16. Artists featured: The Quireboys, Kid Rock, Motörhead, Rainbow, The Offspring, Die Toten Hosen, W.A.S.P., Warrant, Cinderella, Saxon, Metallica, No Friends of Harry, Alice Cooper, Halestorm, Ozzy Osbourne, Red Dragon Cartel, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Coheed & Cambria, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Black Stone Cherry, Junkyard, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Manfred Mann, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Wolfmother, Desperado, Edguy, Steel Panther, Mammoth WVH, Van Halen, Springbok Nude Girls, Stiff Little Fingers, Ramones, Foo Fighters, Tom Waits & Parkway Drive. PS, just realized that the show is not Aussie free, Wolfmother are in there with ‘Pyramid'.
Since Season Two has not materialized, and the world is now a different place since the promise of Season Two, we have a season ready for you, but not a real season, whatever that means anyway, but an "unreal season," one centered around uncertainty, featuring Ophira Eisenberg from NPR's Ask Me Another, Nick Flynn, the author of "This Is The Night Our House Will Catch Fire," Moth storyteller Ed Gavagan and others. Stay tuned and stay safe and healthy!

Real Estate REality Check | Real Estate & Business Career Success Education and Training
Introduction: Today we are fortunate enough to have with us marketing and social media guru to the stars, Mark Zablow. Mark is the founder and CEO of Cogent Entertainment Marketing, a leading influencer and experiential marketing agency that was voted #2 in Ad Age’s Best Places to Work in 2019. Mark and the talented and innovative Cogent team work with such companies as Corona, Snapple, Pepsi, Best Buy, DIRECTV, and AT&T. Episode Notes: At 1:50, Mark Zablow touches upon the real value of influence, building trust, and authenticity by association. At 4:00, Mark discusses work ethic, “hustling like an intern,” taking calculated risks, and imagination. At 6:05, Zablow believes that the ability to improvise on your feet is key in the business world. At 7:36, he notes that as the world speeds up, history starts to fall part, while also mentioning the importance of teaching history. At 9:44, Zablow shares a story of the Memory Motel in Montauk, and hitting rock bottom early on in his career. At 12:27, he talks about Cogent’s culture, and managing and leading with empathy. At 14:52, Mark dives into recruiting and retaining talent, the ability to control the experience team members have in their journey at Cogent, and Cogent Palooza. At 18:11, Zablow stresses the importance of being able to communicate with the younger generations and the need “to be 21 years old every day.” At 21:17, he defines Cogent as a nontraditional agency that is an extension of himself (as everything he has done since birth has been unconventional), while noting that being normal is boring. At 24:19, Zablow turns the table and asks Larry Haber his thoughts on an interviewee sending a follow up email post job interview. At 28:04, Larry Haber shares a story from a 1990’s Columbia University graduation ceremony he attended for a former employee where actor Brian Dennehy gave the commencement speech. At 29:56, Mark speaks about leveraging the “gig” and influencer economy, and the younger generations spending in micro-buckets. At 32:03, Zablow dishes on the great conversations he has had with Uber drivers. At 36:05, he relates a few of Eddie Murphy’s lines from his favorite movie “The Distinguished Gentleman” to that of what Cogent does. At 39:23, Mark touches upon being a pawn in the game of life, and the need not to “reinvent the wheel.” At 41:50, Zablow shares a classic line preached at Cogent in that, “we don't have problems, we have challenges.” At 43:20, he talks about his wife being the reason he is able to continue to stay focused and see the big picture in certain situations. At 47:48, Mark speaks to being more receptive to feedback from those he works with compared to early on in his career, and why one must keep people close that aren't afraid to confront you. At 49:52, Zablow explains why he did not have the balance early on his career, and how that changed once he got married and had a kid. At 52:30, he dives into getting his ya-ya's out when he is surrounded by close friends and family and during rare situations where “responsibility drops.” At 57:01, Mark Zablow closes out the podcast by discussing imagination being the secret to life, happiness, and success, along with how his parents helped make the impossible happen.
One summer in 1973, two men robbed a bank in Stockholm. They held four people hostage for six days. Swedish psychiatrist and criminologist Nils Bejerot coined the term "Stockholm Syndrome" to describe the response of the hostages. One of the bank robbers, Clark Olofsson, told us, "It was fun." How did I get here? And what am I supposed to do next? and the book that helped them answer those oh-so-existential questions. All episodes drop March 21st over in the Self? Help! feed. But today you get a sneak preview of episode one with Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Hidden Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking.1 Listen in to hear how Do What You Are[2] helped her change careers and find her true self.

Oh it's getting DEEP with Memory Motel this episode. Terence Mickey takes us back into our memories and gets into the science and stories of how memory affects our lives. But realistically, we spend a lot of time talking about our most treasured items, and our most terrible reminders of exes! Memory Motel is a sonic love letter to memory and what's revealed about ourselves, our wants and desires, when we go back to find meaning in what's been lived. Show launch: 3/15/16.
In the Spring 2014 issue of American Road Magazine our Memory Motel column was all ears as we swept down into the mountain resort of Steamboat Springs to visit the Rabbit Ears Motel. Ironically, as Greg Koehler, our guest and owner of the motel will tell us, the name has more to do with geology than a certain rascally cartoon character. On the other hand the inn's overactive sign did create something of a distraction for visitors to the famous Steamboat Springs right across the street. Greg also shares an honest look at the hard life of maintaining a motel. It's a real labor of love.

In the colonial days of Ichabod Crain, the Headless Horseman and the Knickerbockers, a stagecoach, post road connected New York City and the state capital of Albany. The little city of Hyde Park along side the mighty Hudson River marked the halfway point in the long journey and was a frequent overnight lodging place. That Post Road still exists as US Route 9. In a recent issue of American Road Magazine the Memory Motel column featured The Roosevelt Inn, a family owned, modern day rest stop for travelers in Hyde Park. In this first of two podcasts Karen Rudowski who runs the Inn along with her mother shares the unique nature of this quaint motor court and its historic surroundings.
