Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Amanda Gari, granddaughter, old Banjo Eyes himself, Eddie Cantor. Amanda was a great guest who talked about her loving, if somewhat. compromised grandfather she knew after a series of medical events slowed him down. We talk to Amanda about the massive star Eddie Canter was from the 1920s to the 1960s. He worked with everyone from Will Rogers & W.C. Fields, wrote an iconic song we all know as “Merry Melodies” and made a hit of the song “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”. Eddie even shows up in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire played by Stephen DeRosa). And we are barely scratching the surface here. We also talk to Amanda about her father, Roberto Gari who was a painter and actor whose portrait of Judy Garland hangs in the Museum of the City of New York and his rebirth in his later years as Amy Sedaris dad Guy Blank in her hit series Strangers with Candy was as unexpected as it was funny. Not to be outdone, we talk to Amanda about her birth being announced on The Ed Sullivan Show, her acting and singing career in cabaret as well as her own ‘Banjo eyes” that she's used to comedic effect in many of her stage and screen gigs. We're “Makin' Whoopie” on this encore episode, as we tip our caps to the man who started the March of Dimes charity. Everyone has a story. Take a listen.

We all know Big Chungus, a screengrab of Bugs Bunny mocking Elmer Fudd from the Merry Melodies episode, "Wabbit Twouble". But what is chungus beyond mere celluloid and ink? Chungus is many things, comes in many forms, and represents many emotions. One being something coined in this episode; horrorful. Join us as we uncover all of the complexity and depth that is Big Chungus.[body] Linktree Find out more at http://20kleaguespod.com This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

This week on our Top 5 series we discuss who we think the most underrated looney tune characters are. First and foremost, do we agree on what underrated means? Has the spelling of Looney Toons ever existed? Do you remember Merry Melodies and Silly Symphonies? Lastly, how does Mitch McConnell and Adolf Hitler fit into all this? This is a good one, you don't want to miss it! "What, no Mickey Mouse?"Legendary animation historian Jerry Beck joins the podcast for a multi-episode discussion on Looney Tunes. In this first episode, Jerry provides background on how he got into animation history and the importance of his friendship with the iconic Leonard Maltin. And he provides a brief history of Looney Tunes starting with the character of Bosko, which was influenced by the popularity of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. Mickey's popularity led moviegoers to pressure the studios for more animation, and led to the popular saying of the day, “what, no Mickey Mouse?” That pressure eventually led to the development of Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies to create musical cartoons for theatrical release. Jerry also discusses the development of the Looney Tunes “stars”, including Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and that wacky rabbit Bugs Bunny. He also discusses the impact of key directors including Tex Avery and the voice of so many Looney Tunes characters, Mel Blanc. Whether you know the history of Looney Tunes already or are a novice, Jerry tells the story in terms we can all enjoy.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Amanda Gari, actress, singer and impressionist who talks to us today about her grandfather Izzy Iskowitz, better known as Eddie Cantor. Starting in the 1920s until the late 1950s, Eddie Cantor was one of America's biggest stars – from vaudeville to Broadway, from radio to television, from film to recorded music, there was arguably no bigger star in the first half of the 20th Century than Eddie Cantor, the man they called “Banjo Eyes." Amanda's tales of growing up around her composer mother Jane Cantor Gari, actor/painter father Roberto Gari and her grandfather Eddie, we learn a great deal about what it was like growing up Cantor. We touch on names like W.C. Fields, Will Rogers, Fanny Brice, Sammy Davis Jr., Amy Sedaris, Judy Garland, Shelly Winters, Ronald Reagan and many more. We learn that Cantor co-wrote the theme tune to the iconic Warner Bros. cartoon Merry Melodies which began as “Merrily We Roll Along.” Cantor's hyperkinetic energy and manic stage presence, are no match for Cantor's generosity. He started the March of Dimes charity at the behest of President Franklin Roosevelt, made the song “Making Whoopie” famous, whose stance against Hitler & fascism prior to WWII caused his sponsors to leave his radio program, how he was the first president of the Screen Actors Guild and how his influence made a hit out of the then-unknown song, “Santa Clause is Coming to Town.” But even knowing all that, the moment you won't to miss is Amanda's spot on impression of Flipper that really leaves you wanting more. On the next Rarified Heir Podcast.
The hits keep on coming with another Simpsons: Treehouse Of Commentary, this time looking at the 4th "Simpsons Halloween Special", also arguably one of the best ones ever made as it includes "The Devil & Homer Simpson", "Terror At 5 & 1/2 Feet" and "Bart Simpson's Dracula". We'll look at what Merry Melodies cartoon inspired the "Homer in Hell" scene and how it was Matt Groening's favorite piece of animation, what Disney villain made a brief appearance, and ask the burning question...who the hell is James Coco? That's just in the first segment! Plus special musical guest, former With Faith Or Flames guitarist Eric Weatherford's brand new Synth-wave project SHREDDERFORD helps us get spooky with the Halloween jam "Ghoul School". The film that finally puts two things together that no one asked for, no previous commonality, no established universe, no real similarities, and no capability of accomplishing something someone might label "good". Cartoons and basketball just don't go together. Hot off the success of Roger Rabbit, well ok, not hot off. More like many years later....someone decided to mashup our reality with the physics defying world of Bugs Bunny. Now that possibly could have worked, if they had chosen to focus on that. But Space Jam focuses on the life and times of Michael Jordan, which has nothing to do with cartoons. Nothing. So the Looney Tunes take a back seat to MJ. Sure he's the greatest (LeBron?) but he's not what is putting butts in seats here. Otherwise you'd just have a film starring Michael Jordan. Come on... Beyond the idiocy that is the concept, the film is garbage. The most fatal flaw that Warner Bros. committed here is that they thought people came for Looney Tunes because of Bugs, Daffy, and Yosemite. Little did they understand, those characters were just the delivery vehicle for the shear brilliance that was Chuck Jones and Mel Blanc. THOSE guys are why we came. Proof required? Try watching a Merry Melodies after a Looney Tunes. Without Chuck Jones and Mel Blanc the WB crew is just another bland unmemorable troop of talking critters. The voice acting sucks, the animation sucks, the jokes suck, everything sucks. Pick up a copy of Justin's novel. The Golden Right on Amazon Prime
Looney Tunes! Merry Melodies! They're two different things! That's just one of the many thing you'll learn in this episode. Granted, we don't discuss what the differences are but it's been a long week, what do you want from us? Also we solve a listener problem from a bartender concerning their fellow bartender's terrible fake New England accent. If that's not enough, we also announce that we're coming to SXSW in Austin, Texas on March 11! Tickets are on sale now at tcgte.com/tour

Seijun Suzuki's 1966 film Tokyo Drifter is more comprehensible than Branded to Kill -- it does actually have a discernible plot for most of the film -- but barely -- there's an extended fight scene that plays like a Merry Melodies short. The studio didn't like this one either. While Tokyo Drifter didn't lead directly to Suzuki's firing, it did get his color film privileges revoked, which is why the later Branded to Kill is in black and white while Tokyo Drifter has, quite honestly, a really excellent integration of color and non-color footage.
