I am so stoked to share this with you today. Bible connection are on my favorite things list. Special thanks to Michelle Stevens for sending me a short clip from Myron Golden. I checked out a bunch of his stuff and found two Genesis stories that connect in an interesting way. Both of them relate in this way: count your blessings and don't miss them in pursuit of what you don't have, in search of what you lack. Satan works hard and well in the powerful gaps of life. He draws our attention to what is missing and makes them into much more than what they really are. He did so with Adam and Eve. They walked past amazing fruit trees to get to the one they were told was bad for them. Why in the world did they do that and how are we sometimes like them?In the case of Hagar and Ishmael, their situation was the exact opposite. They were in a wilderness, not a garden. And yet, the same problem popped up. She missed what God was doing because of the overwhelming weight of what she didn't have. Her story may connect to you in a personal way. If so, I hope God opening her eyes becomes your story as well.- When is the last time you counted your many blessings, naming them one by one?- Why do you think we are so fixated, so often, on what we do not have?- Is the focus on what we lack healthy? Won't we just move on to something else we lack?- What do we learn about resources and abundance from the garden of Eden?- What do we learn about resources and abundance from Hagar in the wilderness?

As Americans grapple with the devastation wrought by the dual pandemics of racism and Covid-19, it is critically important to understand the vast racial disparities Covid-19 has exposed within the African American community (specifically), but communities of color (generally). The legacies of housing policies sponsoring residential segregation, and the associated racial gaps in wealth, educational achievement, health inequities, and lethal police encounters resonate nationally, but global white supremacy and migration patterns have contributed to powerful displays of international solidarity. In this episode, Dr. Louis Woods speaks with experts in multiple fields to examine how the sudden shock of the Covid-19 pandemic has illuminated the centuries-old pandemic of racism in western culture, and particularly in the United States. Sociologist Dr. Tony Brown discusses underlying health disparities. Dr. Terah Venzant Chambers describes educational funding discrepancies contributing to racial achievement gaps. Dr. Sharita Jacobs-Thompson explores the invaluable contribution her co-taught “History of Policing” class has made to DC Metropolitan veteran officers and police cadets. Dr. Michelle Stevens examines the link between PTSD and trauma in the black community and emphasizes the critical importance of self-care. Dr. Glenn Chambers provides international contexts to the global protest movement associated with murder of George Floyd. Dr. Louis Woods then concludes with an analysis of historical housing policy and the generational impacts witnessed today. It took the world stopping, for a critical mass of white Americans to hear, in many instances for the first time, the legitimate outcries of police brutality made generationally by African Americans. This podcast episode provides a holistic exploration to the tragedies that made this latest iteration of white police terror both a national and an international movement. This episode is part of RTN's Pass The Mic Project. This episode was recorded by, and remains the property of, Dr. Louis Woods.

I first met Michelle Stevens in 2014, back when I was an acquiring editor for a startup book publishing company. We took a meeting with her and her agent after reading the proposal for her book, which combined a memoir about surviving childhood sexual abuse with solid explanations of the psychology involved in the dissociative identity disorder that Stevens, among others, developed as a result of that protracted trauma. I was impressed by the proposal, and the meeting, but I wasn't the one who got to make those sorts of decisions, so we ended up passing on the book—fortunately, Scared Selfless wound up with a great publisher who was able to support the book in a way it deserved, so chances are that, sometime in 2017, you might have seen her in a magazine you were reading, or on a daytime talk show... Happily, she and I were able to keep in touch, so when she came to New York City to do some media, we were able to get together for a frank conversation about—among other things—what dissociative identity disorder is (and what it isn't), about how surviving her trauma motivated her career in psychotherapy, and about what it's like to come forward with a story about surviving sexual abuse in a country where, let's face it, the outcome of the most recent presidential election suggests our concern about sexual assault is not what it should be. I'm delighted to finally be able to share this conversation with you.

If you are an older job seeker, you have probably wondered if your age has been a factor in not getting an interview or a job offer for a position you wanted.Ageism is a very real thing, but not every rejection is due to age discrimination. Guest Jacob Share says being the right cultural fit for a position is the most important factor in your being invited into an organization. People want to hire people they will enjoy being around on a day-to-day basis. If you are finding it difficult to get an interview, Jacob recommends using LinkedIn as a tool to find other people who have similar characteristics and experience. Observe which companies have hired them and reach out to current and past employees. Ask for a copy of their resume so you know exactly what type of information the company is looking for. Many positions in today’s job market are filled by personal or professional referrals, so networking can be an important aspect of your job search. We discussed tactics you can try to squash common concerns a company may have about your age: Your experience may merit a higher salary than the company has budgeted for. During the interview, state how your experience can add up to cost savings in other areas. They may be looking for a long-term employee and think you could retire soon. Make it known you intend to grow with the company and describe your loyalty to previous companies. You may not be able to work for someone younger than you. Cite examples of how you are already working with younger people. This Week’s Guest: Jacob Share Jacob Share is the founder of JobMob, an award-winning blog that serves a global audience. Tonight's special guest is Dr Michelle Stevens from Los Angeles, author of the newly released book "Scared Selfless: My Journey from Abuse and Madness to Surviving and Thriving." A shocking, inspiring, and enlightening new memoir, "Scared Selfless" chronicles Michelle's improbable journey from horrendous child sexual abuse, loss, and mental illness to healing, recovery, and happiness. Not until she remembered and confronted the full extent of what had happened to her was Michelle able to find the path to recovery and ultimately triumph. As a child, Michelle Stevens was the victim of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather, Gary Lundquist—elementary school teacher, neighborhood stalwart, and brutal pedophile. He locked her in a cage, tortured her, and used her as his sex slave, subjecting her to inconceivable cruelty. She was forced to perform in child ography and trafficked in a child sex ring. To cope with the trauma, Michelle unconsciously repressed the memories of what she had experienced and developed multiple personalities. Years later, Michelle was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), more commonly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. The disorder is caused by severe and repeated childhood trauma, usually physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse. Though DID itself is rare, its underlying cause is not. Not until Michelle remembered and confronted the full extent of what had happened to her, was she able to find the path to recovery and ultimately triumph. She's now a successful psychotherapist, expert in trauma, and a prominent advocate against child abuse.

Dr. Michelle Stevens talks about surviving a childhood of sexual abuse, the mental illness that resulted, and how common abuse is (up to 40% of women and 14% of men have been sexually abused during their childhood). She also discusses why her brain developed multiple personalities, why we cannot expect victims to come forward after abuse, and what’s it like to finally reveal this to the people in her life. Dr. Stevens also tells the story of how she met her wife on — spoiler! — a blind date 23 years ago. Michelle Stevens

The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

As a psychologist and survivor of horrific child abuse, Dr. Michelle Stevens is in a unique position to write and speak on the subject of trauma. Her dual roles as therapist and patient allow her to comprehend psychological issues from the inside out and the outside in. This gives her an uncanny ability to explain the complicated nuances of trauma in ways that are accessible to a broad audience. She strives to use this gift to educate others on the effects of abuse and violence, while inspiring survivors to overcome their pain After suffering more than ten years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of a sadistic pedophile and the sex ring to which he belonged, Michelle escaped and went on to study writing at New York University. Michelle earned her doctorate in psychology from Saybrook University, where her thesis was honored as the “Dissertation of Distinction.” She has presented her research to the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation and the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, where she also received an award for Outstanding Research.
