Paul Cimins interviews Mitch Malloy, an American singer, best known as the former lead vocalist for the rock band Great White from 2018 to 2022. Malloy studied music at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. He got his first break when he was signed to RCA. Malloy's self-titled first album featured session musicians such as Mickey Curry, Hugh McDonald and Michael Thompson.[1] His first single as a solo artist on RCA records, "Anything At All", was a top 20 rock charting hit and a pop hit in the US.[5] His third single, "Our Love Will Never Die", earned him an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.[1] His second album, Ceilings And Walls, featured guest musicians such as Bernie Leadon, Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrack.[6] He auditioned to be the singer of hard rock band Van Halen after Sammy Hagar's departure.[7][8][9] Malloy recorded various demos with the band, and Eddie Van Halen gave Malloy an instrumental demo to use for his own endeavors. This song was released by Malloy in 2015 as "It's the Right Time".[10]The riff reemerged in the sessions leading up to Van Halen's 1998 studio album Van Halen III in the song "That's Why I Love You." The song was scrapped from the record in favor of "Josephina."[11] Malloy has had a lengthy career featuring in various bands as lead singer, releasing solo albums, and making guest appearances as well. His latest album marks his first time completing an entire release all on his own.[12] Visit his website to learn more about him. www.mitchmalloy.com

Some of the most popular songs from The Cult come from Sonic Temple, their fourth studio album. They garnered some attention in 1985 when the single “She Sells Sanctuary” off their second album hit the US charts, and they had established a solid following as a “post punk” or “goth rock” band, but Sonic Temple would put them over the top with its more hard rock appeal. The band lineup for this album consisted of Ian Astbury on vocals and percussion, Billy Duffy on guitar, Jamie Stewart on bass and keyboards, and newcomer Mickey Curry on drums. Prior to Curry, the band had relied on Eric Singer for the first demos, and Chris Taylor for second demos at the drums. While the critical reception was mixed with some considering the work too conventional, the commercial success was undeniable. The album shot up to the top 10 in both the UK and the US, and was certified gold in the UK and platinum in the US.Creative differences would destabilize the group on their fifth studio album and the group would break up after 1998. However several reunions took place over the years, and the group is back together as of 2022. Brian leads the discussion of this album.Sun KingAstbury and Duffy wrote this song, inspired by Louis XIV. Known as the Sun King, Louis XIV is the French King who moved the royal court to Versailles. The track is an explicitly masculine one. “I'm a sun king, baby, let me take you by the hand. Sun king, honey, we can rule across the land.” Fire WomanThe first single from the album is this well known track. As with all the tracks, Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy wrote this hit which peaked at number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks charts. Astbury has stated that this is a universal symbol, an archetype of the femme fatale.Edie (Ciao Baby)Edie Sedgwick is the inspiration for this song. Sedgwick was an actress and socialite who traveled in Andy Warhol's circles in 1960's New York. Sedgwick lived fast and died young of a drug overdose. She was 28 when she died. Her last film was “Ciao! Manhattan.” This is not the only song inspired by Sedgwick, as Bob Dylan's “Just Like a Woman” is supposedly inspired by Edie Sedgwick as well.Sweet Soul SisterThis track was written in Paris, inspired by the Americanization of European culture. It was the fourth single released from the album. The song observes the love/hate relationship that comes with both the attraction and resistance experienced as a response to American culture, particularly in France. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The main theme from the television series "Saturday Night Live" Mike Myers joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, and original cast member Gilda Radner died in this month in 1989. STAFF PICKS:So Alive by Love and Rockets Rob begins the staff picks with a group that sounds a bit like INXS. This single is off the self-titled fourth album from Love and Rockets. “You're legs are strong and you're so, so long, and you don't come from this town.” The single made it to number 3 in the U.S., and was considered the number 1 modern rock song in the U.S. for 1989.Walkin' Shoes by Tora ToraWayne features a rock-blues number from a group out of Memphis, Tennessee. This underrated song made it to number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the sound reminds us of Motley Crue and Led Zeppelin. The group won studio time in a Battle of the Bands contest. Tora Tora is still recording as of 2022.Dreams In the Dark by BadlandsBruce's staff pick is a hair band formed by former Black Sabbath members Ray Gillen (vocals) and Eric Singer (drums), former Ozzy guitarist Jake E. Lee, and former Surgical Steel bass player Greg Chaisson. After Lee was fired from Ozzy's band by Sharon Osborne, he was motivated to form this band. As mentioned previously Eric Singer had a hand in the demos of The Cult's album, and would go on to join KISS. Good Thing by Fine Young CannibalsBrian wraps up this week's staff picks with the second big hit from FYC's album, “The Raw & the Cooked.” Fine Young Cannibals hail from Birmingham, England, formed in 1984 and disbanded in 1992. COMEDY TRACK:Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child by Mojo NixonThis boogie-woogie comedy track is a good example of the type of parody song for which Mojo Nixon is famous.

We're back with a new episode, and we're excited to announce our new partnership with Top Shelf Music! On today's podcast we are joined by Rob Hammersmith, drummer for multi-platinum selling rock band Skid Row. Rob's musical journey began at an early age after a family trip to see Roy Orbison. Soon after that concert he got his first drum kit and crafted a makeshift "drum cage" out of PVC pipe. He was immediately hooked, and before long Rob was playing in cover bands in upstate New York. He quickly developed an appreciation for a solid back beat and playing for the song, an approach to drumming that he still considers the foundation for his style today. His early influences, and still some of his favorites to date, were drumming greats John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Phil Rudd of ACDC. Rob also sites Mickey Curry as a major influence. Originally from the small town of Olean, NY, Rob later settled in Atlanta, GA, and quickly gained attention in the rock underground. After several years of touring and recording with the Atlanta rock band 'Rockets to Ruin' and touring with 'Gunfire 76' (featuring Murderdolls frontman Wednesday 13), Rob was offered the drum position in Skid Row in April of 2010. The band has since toured several times nationally and internationally and has recorded two EPs of a three part trilogy, United World Rebellion - Chapter 1 and Rise of the Damnation Army - Chapter 2. A full-length album, third installment of the trilogy is currently being recorded. This year the band celebrated the 30th anniversary of their iconic hard rock masterpiece, Slave to the Grind by playing a handful of shows performing the album in its entirety. We find out what Rob's been up to as of late and talk about when touring will start up again, his influences, and the new album in the works. We also talk about food (Sushi), motorcycles, and Skunk asks a very important question. Born in 1956 in New Haven, Connecticut, Mickey took up drums when he was 11 and played with local bands. *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen The Rich Redmond Show is sponsored by: Big Dot Lighting - Commercial LED Lighting Specialists -and- Bruce Cline Home Loans & Mortgage Refinance | Movement Mortgage www.musiciansmortgage.com His early inspirations ranged from Ringo Starr and John Bonham through to Chicago's Danny Seraphine and - under the influence of his older brothers - the classic R'n'B of Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and James Brown. Mickey got serious about drums from the age of 13 when he and two of his brothers formed a school band called The Rack. Later, Mickey went to a state school for music, but the academic route was not for him and he left early to play in bands. When he was 17 he joined the Scratch Band in Connecticut where he first gained recording experience. Next Mickey started to make the two hour train journey into Manhattan and eventually joined a band called Tom Dicky and the Desires. They were managed by music mogul Tommy Mottola who also managed Hall and Oates - big news in the early 1980s. Impressed by Mickey, Mottola asked him to record Hall and Oates' new album ‘Private Eyes'. Around the same time Mickey met top producer Bob Clearmountain who'd just found a new singer called Bryan Adams. Within months Mickey had recorded Adams' second album ‘You Want It You Got It'. Next thing Mickey's out on tour with Hall and Oates. All this was in 1981 when Mickey was 25. This was his big-break year and he's never really looked back. The calls started to come in thick and fast - Tom Waits, Cher, Tina Turner, Los Lobos. Mickey worked with Hall and Oates through till 1986, since then he's been Bryan Adams' regular drummer. He says “I get to sound more like me on Bryan's records than on anyone else's”. He's also had considerable success recording and touring with The Cult. He played on their 1989 album ‘Sonic Temple' which sold three million. During the period he was playing with Hall & Oates, Curry met producer Bob Clearmountain, who had recently begun working with a young Bryan Adams, and appeared on Adams' second album, You Want It You Got It. His appearance on nearly all of Adams' subsequent albums coincided with his rise to prominence. Following his stint with Hall & Oates, Curry began touring full time with Adams, a collaboration that continues to this day. Other notable sessions have been with Alice Cooper, Stevie Winwood, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Carly Simon, T-Bone Burnett and Richard Thompson. Plata þáttarins er svo platan Sonic Temple með The Cult sem kom út í apríl fyrir aldarfjórðungi, 25 árum! Sonic Temple er fjórða plata The Cult og þeirra vinsælasta plata. Hún hefur að geymna smelli á borð við Sun King, Edie, Fire Woman og Sweet Soul Sister. Sonic Temple er síðasta plata Cult sem bassaleikairnn Jamie Stewart spilar á, hann hætti 1990, og fyrsta plata sveitarinnar sem fyrrum trommari Hall & Oates og Bryan Ferry, Mickey Curry spilar á. Velgengnin sem Cult öðlaðist í kjölfar útgáfu Sonic Temple slátraði bandinu næstum því. Hún kom út á þeim tíma þegar Guns´n Roses var stærsta rokkband í heimi og á vissan hátt var Cult stærra um tíma. Sveitin fylgdi plötunni eftir um allan heim, tapaði bassaleikaranum á leiðinni og í kjölfarið varð Cult að tveggja manna bandinu sem það hefur verið til dagsins í dag. Ian Atsbury syngur og Billy Duffy sem er mynd af framan á plötunni að spila á Gibson les Paul, spilar á gítar. Þeim buðust tveir upphitunartúrar þegar Sonic Temple kom út, annarsvegar með ozzy Osbourne, sem þeim fannst of óldskúl á þeim tíma, og Metallica. Plata þáttarins er svo platan Sonic Temple með The Cult sem kom út í apríl fyrir aldarfjórðungi, 25 árum! Sonic Temple er fjórða plata The Cult og þeirra vinsælasta plata. Hún hefur að geymna smelli á borð við Sun King, Edie, Fire Woman og Sweet Soul Sister. Sonic Temple er síðasta plata Cult sem bassaleikairnn Jamie Stewart spilar á, hann hætti 1990, og fyrsta plata sveitarinnar sem fyrrum trommari Hall & Oates og Bryan Ferry, Mickey Curry spilar á. Velgengnin sem Cult öðlaðist í kjölfar útgáfu Sonic Temple slátraði bandinu næstum því. Hún kom út á þeim tíma þegar Guns´n Roses var stærsta rokkband í heimi og á vissan hátt var Cult stærra um tíma. Sveitin fylgdi plötunni eftir um allan heim, tapaði bassaleikaranum á leiðinni og í kjölfarið varð Cult að tveggja manna bandinu sem það hefur verið til dagsins í dag. Ian Atsbury syngur og Billy Duffy sem er mynd af framan á plötunni að spila á Gibson les Paul, spilar á gítar. Þeim buðust tveir upphitunartúrar þegar Sonic Temple kom út, annarsvegar með ozzy Osbourne, sem þeim fannst of óldskúl á þeim tíma, og Metallica.
