Since their inception in 2018, Talking Drums have provided some of the most inventive, quietly sophisticated and all round highly sought-after dancefloor cuts on vinyl, providing an “a home for poorly executed dance moves, misjudged vibes and narcotic bravery.” Emanating from Manchester's musical centre, and blurring the boundaries between edits and otherwise, Phantasy are delighted to have the minds behind jump from wax and into our long-running mix series… “We took a break from our full time hobby inventing increasingly idiotic DJ names to lay down a little bit of cosmic wobble, wormhole funk, daft disco and TD XXXclusives. Illicit edits, remixes for friends and a little OG energy suitable for all ages and most situations. Many thanks to the marvellous folks at Phantasy Sound for inviting us into their orbit.”

A motivação e a inspiração vão estar lá 100%. Previously, he has played a solo at a corporate gig called Hackathon , KTPO, has performed percussion with eminent DJs from India and across the globe also have been playing at the prestigious event, Fete de la Music ‘World Music Day' organised by Alliance Francaise since 2007 and have judged quite a few battle of the bands in the country. Being part of full-length studio albums conceived by bands like ‘White Mug', ‘Dark Light' and ‘Traces' and working with various artists like Mr. Edsel Correya, Mr. Yash Gowda, Mr. Khussh Mehta and several others for studio tracking has helped him deepen his understanding. Had been part of Australia's Oriental / Indo/ Latin Jazz fusion guitar maestro – Peter Dickson too. Not wanting to limit himself, he leapt towards ‘mridangam' to understand the tradition and intricacies of percussion in the Carnatic style. He is currently learning under the world renowned Vidwan Shri. Amrit Khanjira. He was a recipient of the ‘Best Drummer Award' from YAMAHA at Asian Beats festival, 2010. I have also received laurels in college fests such as New Horizon MVJIT and lots more. Saint Evo is an Artist and a DJ/Producer hailing from the savannah plains of Kajiado County, home of the famed Maasai people, in the Republic of Kenya. Being the energetic choleric-sanguine DJ/Producer that he is, Saint Evo is celebrated as one of the pioneer producers of the Afro House sound in East Africa. In 2020, he was ranked number 8 on the Traxsource Top 100 Afro House Producers chart. On his debut year on Traxsource, Saint Evo was ranked number 41 on the Afro House Top 100 Artists for the year 2018 and this was followed up with a ranking of number 21 on the Afro House Top 100 Artists for the year 2019. These rankings have confirmed that he is the leading Afro House Producer in the East African region and that he is making a positive mark on the Afro House scene at large. According to Saint Evo, musical freedom is a priceless commodity that demands constant vigilance at the altar of creativity in order to guarantee its longevity. As such, Saint Evo endeavors to capture and acoustically materialize sounds from the Equatorial region of Africa, fusing them with vocals from renowned unique artists such as Viiiictor May (South Africa), Audius (Australia), Venessa Jackson (South Africa), Nomvula SA (South Africa), FLERIIN (Russia), Tabia (South Africa), Crescent Von Croon (South Africa), Lizwi (South Africa), Idd Aziz (Kenya), Rocio Starry (Spain), Toshi (South Africa), RubyGold (South Africa), Kwame (Kenya), Madigari (Namibia) amongst others, in the creation of musical works that reflect the redolent recondite narratives of this African region. In his exploration of the fusion of sounds from the Equator and other spaces, Saint Evo continually seeks to collaborate with an array of producers and percussionists from around the globe. Thus far, he has worked with Coflo (USA), DJ 84 (South Africa), Mtsepisto (Swaziland) Stopher CM (South Africa), Freddy Da Stupid (Mozambique), Over12 (Portugal), Shona SA (Zimbabwe), Benjy (France), Cocosoul (South Africa), Chinjong X Chinjong (Cameroon) amongst others. Correspondingly, Saint Evo's prescient vision has been to evangelize to the world this Equatorial sound. In this vein, the past few years have witnessed his musical productions making a mark on the international Afro House music scene, where he has released musical gems with reputable record labels from Africa, Europe & North America. In 2019, Saint Evo launched his own record label, Celsius Degree Records. As a DJ, his sets are characterized by an array of African drums infused with smithereens of fecund slivers of synths and basslines of electronic music. Through his monthly show titled Talking Drums hosted on his Mixcloud channel, Saint Evo showcases Afro House music from Africa and the world that resonates with his musical philosophy.

Drum Codes [Pt 1]: The Language of Talking Drums

For hundreds of years, the Yorùbá people of West African have used “talking drums” to send messages across great distances. West African languages are highly musical, full of rising and falling tones. The pitch of talking drums can be adjusted to mimic these tones, so drummers can “speak” to one another. The drummer encodes the language, converting it into drum patterns, and in the process, poeticizes it. In part two of 'Drum Codes', airing next season on The SpokenWeb Podcast, we sit down with a master drummer and learn more about how drums function as information compression tools.SpokenWeb is a monthly podcast produced by the SpokenWeb team as part of distributing the audio collected from (and created using) Canadian Literary archival recordings found at universities across Canada. The Talking Drum is one of the most sacred instruments of West Africa. Shaped like an hourglass, the drum has a unique melodic sound which means it can imitate the tones of language and in this way speak words. Along with its spiritual power and healing properties, the talking drum is also a source of history, poetry and proverbs. Bridget Kendall traces the story of the talking drum to the present day with Mohamed Gueye from Senegal, who descends from a hereditary drummer family, Richard Olatunde Baker who specialises in the talking drum of the Yoruba of Nigeria, the Ivorian-French poet and novelist Veronique Tadjo who focuses on the influence of the talking drum on African literature and the Senegalese-French social anthropologist Dr Hélène Neveu Kringelbach. Michael Spiro is a world-renowned percussionist, recording artist, and educator, known specifically for his work in the Latin music field.Spiro's formal education includes a bachelor's degree with honors in Latin American Studies from the University of California, and three and a half years of graduate work in ethnomusicology at the University of Washington. His practical education consists of a seven- year apprenticeship with Francisco Aguabella (a relationship which continues today) and extensive study throughout Latin America.
