In the winter of 1829, Dutch-Belgian anthropologist Philippe-Charles Schmerling discovered a fossil in a cave in Engis, Belgium — what looked like the partial skull of a small child. Schmerling is often called the father of paleontology, but even he had no idea what he had stumbled upon. Decades later, as other similar fossils came to light, the significance of Schmerling's finding became clear: it was the skull of a child Neanderthal. It was not only the first Neanderthal fossil ever uncovered — it was the first fossil to be recognized as early human.Although Neanderthals died out around 40,000 years ago, advances in genetic sequencing have revealed that their DNA lives on in all of us today — in our immune systems, vulnerability to certain diseases and, as more recent work has found, the likelihood of being an early riser or "morning person."In this episode, Sam and Deboki unpack the ancient human journey and the complicated web of relationships between ancient human species. Although Homo Sapiens are the only surviving humans today, for hundreds of thousands of years we were not alone.Links to the Tiny Show & Tell stories are here and here. One speaker will talk about 'Shiny Object' and why it's not a "bad" thing, One speaker will talk about Human Design, And another on Myers-Briggs, and many more! Join my email list if you're interested in learning more about the "Working How We Are" Audio Summit and you'll be the first to know! https://www.westelizabeth.com/vip-list-signup This episode is a Re-Release from my original Episode 12 titled It's Okay to Not be a "Morning Person" Self-awareness for me has been life changing in the best of ways...one of my fave quotes by Maya Angelou is "When you know better, you do better". I was always drained and exhausted for most of my life...I was a caretaker for many years (fourteen) and I had to grow up fast and with this said I never got a chance to do as one of my friends Mika said 'Self-Discovery' until the pandemic in the Fall of 2020. Wow, right?! I WISH I knew all of these traits about myself...I certainly would have 'done better' in taking self-care and in recharging which has created a sense of calm, relief and dare I say happiness in my life that I never have had before. :) Enjoy! Elizabeth ---------------------------- Copied and Pasted from Episode 12 "It's Okay to Not be a "Morning Person"" It's okay to not be a morning person. For the most of my life I felt like something was wrong with me for not being a morning person and told that that was "lazy". Even if I slept in on the weekends mind you! We're all groomed to be "morning people" as everything from elementary school, college and working for corporate has the hours of anywhere from 8am-5pm or 9am-6pm!! Come to find out that I personally tend to "peak" work wise in the afternoons so I'm talking about this and mentioning that it is okay to not be a morning person. Shout out to all of my night owls! Nothing against being a "Morning Person" if that's what you are then that's fricken awesome! Shoot, being honest I sure wish I was too! I was in denial but now I'm embracing this trait about myself! :) Also, we can change depend on what season of life we're in so we'll see if I stay or change my night owl status. ;-) I mention many women entrepreneurs that have also admitted that they aren't "morning people" either. These are women that are very accomplished and successful in their businesses. Further proof that it's "okay" to not be a morning person. :) IG handle: @imelizabethwest ----------------------------------- Show Notes & Mentions: 1. We all know this person. And now they have their own song.
Mason Lowe (drummer of Seattle's feel-good, classic rock-inspired outfit Bread & Butter) has just announced his debut solo LP Morning People, due out June 23rd on Seattle's Killroom Records. The advance single Plastered features pounding, hyperactive guitar riffs over loping drums before opening up into a delightfully poppy chorus with descending melodies. Reflecting on the process behind the album and first single Lowe said, “When I started writing songs for this album, I was going through a long lonely period. But "Plastered” was one of the last few songs written for the album. And by then, I was in L-U-V love. I was a straight-up twinkle toes motherfucker! This song is about someone getting steamrolled by love, is heading off the rails, and is just letting it happen.” In a record with lots of different vibes, this is one of the heavier songs. Mason says, "I don't know where that riff came from! It's a mystery. I'm not a bombastic dude. I'm the kind of guy that tiptoes around my house when I'm alone.” The accompanying video for Plastered features Shane Herrel (Bread & Butter) and Maria-Elena Jaurez (Acapulco Lips) playing maniacally crafted homemade instruments throughout a psychedelic journey without ever leaving the Lowe's garage. Morning People, combines the sounds of glam rock, 60's girl groups, and grunge. The result is an open-hearted, sunny record - a nostalgic sweet pop album that is hopeful, beautiful and utterly sentimental. Nods to Big Star, The Shangri-Las and The Beach Boys are present throughout. Morning People was recorded by Lowe during the height of the pandemic while he was struggling to keep the doors open at a Seattle human services nonprofit. But these are not 12 songs of loneliness and exhaustion. This is a dozen songs about new love, hot crushes, and friendship. Mason dragged his weary buns into the basement with 6-packs of Rainier tallboys to record heavy riffs, light harmonies, and tight arrangements. How tight? None of the songs on this album make it to the three-minute mark. Where did this burst of positive energy come from? "I have no idea,” Mason says. "Work was really tough. I had a lot on my mind. A lot. But I dived into music in a way I never have before. This was a super serious time, but the songs that came out are really poppy and fun. I don't know why. I'm not a sunshiny person. Really!" Hello...thanks for listening! Join my newsletter... https://www.westelizabeth.com/vip-list-signup Looking forward to the longer days! In the U.S. anyway....as of Winter Solstice (which is usually around December 20 of every year)...the days start to get longer! I always get excited because minute by minute I start to notice exactly that and I love it! On March 12 of this year we lost an hour but the good thing is that this helps with the days to get longer. :) On March 20 of this year it was the first day of Spring and the days will continue to get longer and the flowers will blossom and the birds will be chirping too! Being a 'Night Owl' we especially are excited since we tend to stay up later at night and wake-up later in the day than 'Early Birds' do. I talk more about this on my episode #12 titled It's Okay to Not be a "Morning Person". Did you know that we're all 'born' not as morning people? There are 4 different 'chronotype's' as they're called! Spring is also a reminder of new 'blossoming' ideas and opportunities and I speak more about this on this episode! 1. Are you at one with midnight, or up before sunrise? In this episode, Ella Al-Shamahi investigates when we naturally feel tired and awake, known as our chronotype. Our chronotype depends on our lifestyle, our environment, where we live, and is also influenced by our genes. In this episode, Ella Al-Shamahi uncovers fascinating research which suggests our chronotype can be traced back over 100,000 years ago, to when our early modern human ancestors interbred with Neanderthals. She speaks to geneticist Tony Capra how DNA from our Neanderthal ancestors may be influencing our present-day sleeping habits and shares her revelations with professional early riser and BBC Radio 1 Early Breakfast presenter Arielle Free.

Tyler puts Chase on the spot with a question about their differing lifestyles: Are morning people or night owls more lazy? Society certainly seems to encourage one and judge the other. If they are awake for the same amount of time are they getting the same amount of work done? Why isn't going to bed at 8pm viewed as laziness? Also Chase doesn't eat breakfast with people, and Tyler calls 10:34am "first thing in the morning".

Does the early bird get the worm?Or are night owls more productive?I used to wake up super early because I HAD to and even though I am super chipper in the morning when I didn't have to wake up early in the morning anymore, I started to test some things out...What I found was that I actually do my best work from mid-morning to late afternoon and often get a burst of more brain energy around 7 pm.But when I was waking up super early, I was missing those workflow times because I was TIREDSo I said screw it...and decided to listen to my bodyWhat about you? Do you listen to your body or do you feel like you have to wake up super early to be productive? It's what I explore in this episode.
