Thomas Hübl is joined by renowned storyteller, author, and scholar of mythology, Michael Meade. They discuss transformation as an essential element of life, and how embracing radical transformation—both personally and as a collective—allows us to get in touch with our deeper selves. Michael draws on his knowledge of ancient rites of passage, mythology, and initiation rituals to help define the liminal space humanity finds itself in right now. As we stand on a cultural and environmental threshold, we have a choice: either let go of our egos and open our wounds to be cleansed and healed, or resist change and remain disconnected from life, death, and nature itself. He and Thomas also explore what it means to be an elder across different cultures, how seemingly apocalyptic turmoil is really a lifting of the veil, and the divine value of stepping into the unknown. ✨ NEW Self-Paced Course from Thomas Hübl: Navigating the Levels of Trauma Healing ✨ A 6-module online training to manage anxiety, overwhelm, and nervous system dysregulation during times of accelerated change and disruption. Explore a new paradigm to move fluidly between different types of trauma healing and learn new tools and approaches to better manage and integrate what is occurring both personally and collectively. Talking points: masculinity, psychology, myth, JungHot on the heels of the legendary John Lee, I interviewed another founding elder of men's work: Michael Meade. This is a powerful discussion focused on how essential "descent" is for men, and how it's almost completely disappeared from society in favor of endless, destructive growth and commodified "mastery". Powerful words from one of the wisest teachers out there, in my opinion.(00:00:00) - The importance of descent in a man's life(00:11:51) - The signs of descent, and the role of technology(00:22:28) - How the old worldview has collapsed, and the result is collective despair and grief(00:29:39) - How do you deal with the feeling that things are ending?(00:35:20) - The intersection of myth and AI; will they come together? Michael Meade is the founder of Mosaic Multicultural Foundation, a nonprofit network of artists, activists, and community builders that encourages greater understanding between diverse peoples. In this conversation, Michael and Lian explored the wonderful topic of how mythic narratives reveal hidden knowledge for healing and making things whole, especially for those of us working as change-makers and healers of others. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: I've noticed that so many people can connect the dots back to events in childhood that seeded their destiny, or marked their soul, as Michael said. Michael's own story of being gifted the book of mythology was a beautiful example of this. I also loved how he said that our calling will keep calling! Stories are a way we can enter the dream, the other world, as a group - and discover our place in the story. As Michael said, archetypes come with vital energy and intention - which is exactly what we need right now for healing ourselves and the collective Myths show us that beginnings come with endings and that as Michael said “the cracks are where the archetypes get through.” Resources and stuff that we spoke about: Mosaic Website: https://www.mosaicvoices.org/ Living Myth Podcast: https://www.mosaicvoices.org/podcast Michael Meade Events: https://www.mosaicvoices.org/events Michael Meade Courses: https://courses.mosaicvoices.org/   Thank you for listening! Episode SummaryIn Episode #33, Dameian Hartfield joins the podcast for a deeply honest conversation, recounting some of the major moments in his life. In many respects, this podcast is a continuation of an ongoing conversation we have had as friends for nearly two decades, where Dameian speaks his truth and in doing so acts as an ambassador for the greater good, sharing the realities of what comes with growing up in an at-risk community like the Nickerson Gardens Housing Projects in the Watts neighborhood. Beginning the show with his reasons for a slow-cook approach to doing this podcast and then his experiences doing gang-intervention work and some of the key dilemmas and pressures that went with it, we get a feel for the values and lessons Dameian has earned in his life. For example, he describes how political agendas and lack of trust between different organizations in a community add more pressure to one's that are already struggling. We also see how he positioned himself in relation to those politics. Following that, we begin to hear about the challenges that come with life after being in a gang. The uphill battle of re-establishing a positive reputation along with carrying the war-like events of street battles without a reconciliation process to move forward in the way military veterans have is a hard edge to have in one's reality. Sharing with us some details of his journey, like being shot at the age of fifteen and having to deal with conflict zones like ‘Hamburger Hill,' we come to learn why the trauma of being a young, misdirected, urban warrior would need healing places like the one where we first met — at a men's retreat held by the Mosaic Multicultural Foundation deep in the redwoods of Mendocino, California. It was there Dameian and I have formed a relationship that has transcended our native neighborhoods and social upbringings. Next, Dameian takes us into the powerful decisions and transformations that took place for for him as he spent a decade in prison, repaying his debt to society. We hear how he learned to become a communicator, leaving behind his older strategies of simply acting in ways that he thought were needed. Dameian made key decisions to use his prison sentence for his own personal development, even knowing he had a very real possibility of never making it out. In this part of the podcast, we get some profound contours of Dameian's path through this important period of change and soul searching. Further on we learn about how, when he was on the run for a case against him, his relationship with his mother kept him from getting into deeper trouble, perhaps even getting killed. Dameian also walks us through how his Mom imparted to him the realities of the financial struggles they had, and pulled along his questions and challenges into a place of greater understanding and participation in the struggle. Even in his darkest moments of despair, his Mom was able to help him see beyond his hopelessness. In these stories we get a powerful picture of his mom's capacity to guide in the face of adversity, and the important impact that had. In total, this powerful, authentic episode takes us underneath the illegality of gang life in an at risk community, providing us with a sincere portrait of the human lives in and around those situations. And just when we think we are wrapping up, Dameian takes us a step further into his life experiences. He closes out our conversation with an incredibly moving and undeniable accurate portrait of what the challenges of being a black man in the American story is like. *****Dameian Hartfield primarily grew up in Nickerson Gardens housing projects in Los Angeles, California. He also spent part of his youth in Pomona, CA. Currently, Dameian spends his time growing his company, 1 Tamu Essentials, with his wife Dana, and spending time with his kids and grandkids. Episode Summary Michael J. Meade, D.H.L., is a storyteller, author, scholar of mythology as well as the founder of Mosaic Multicultural Foundation and the creator of the Living Myth Podcast. In Standing in the Rivers of Time, Michael offers us his rich understanding of story and myth as we venture further into our season two conversation around passages in general, and rites of passage in particular. By focusing on the importance of ordeals and their role in challenging the ego and awakening the deep self, Meade shines a clear light into the territory of individual and collective rites of passage in our time of ‘collapse and renewal.' Like a river, the show courses its way through many more moments in Michael's life, touching on an array of themes like finding one's lineage, kinds of mentoring and the need for confirmation, time and timelessness, violence, trauma and peace, the muses and the mystic as well as the ancient sense that the world is flooded with an eternal knowledge which we all need to find ways to tap into. Your invited to drop-in to this extended show where Michael Meade offers a profound guidance through matters of myth, massive planetary adversities, and his own stories of finding his way in the world. In this week's episode, Amrit interviews Michael Meade, a storyteller, scholar of mythology, anthropology, and psychology, and author. He is the founder of Mosaic Multicultural Foundation and host of the Living Myth Podcast. Please check into this beauty here: https://www.livingmyth.org/contactMichael and Amrit, talk about the importance of having a deep connection to our soul to find our spirit and live authentically, and about the knowledge that keeps pouring in to awaken us. When we find our gifts and share them, we can consciously connect and become creative. We can change the world, heal it from its wounds, and have a worldview based on connection. The dive deep into the origins of Michael's mythical journey, myth as language, and why people have lost their vertical imagination. They converse about ways in which the soul grows and finds its unique project and path in life, and what supports it on the journey. Michael was given a book on mythology on his thirteenth birthday. Though he immersed into it, it would take another 20 years before it became evident it was his path in life. At the age of twenty, Michael was drafted into the army of the Vietnam War. Refusing to take orders, he was sent to prison's solitary confinement. After six months, he came out knowing he had a unique connection to something meaningful to him which guided him to his current calling as a renowned storyteller. Meade called this initiation. His soul grew and found its unique project in life, by reaching wisdom and descending to the depths of his soul for love and healing. This transformation is about separation, ordeal, and the conscious return to community. Michael talks about the genius path. “Genius” is referring to the unique spirit that is in each person's soul. Everybody is born with a spirit which means they are gifted. When people discover their gifts and share them, they become creative and can even navigate through turmoil. Transformation at the level of the individual heart and soul generates the imagination and collective energy needed for the renewal of community as well as a restoration of nature.Vertical imagination is the center of mysticism. It is the capacity to imagine the height of heavens and feel the depth of the underworld. In order to stay connected to the spirit, we need to have been in the depth of our soul. Meade believes there is a loss of vertical imagination in the world today which leaves people separated from the deep self and soul. Knowledge is pouring in all the time to awaken us. We must be drawn out of ourselves to become ourselves, and the soul knows that. Call it the awakening of your innate genius, your purpose. When you hear the call you must follow it so you don't lose the thread of your life. This thread represents the hidden eternity within and the capacity to awaken to how and where they are threaded into the chain of being. The world is in trouble. Disconnection from nature and each other takes us to places of darkness and suffering. Michael sees darkness as the opportunity to interact with creative energy. We are living at the end of an era and are on a path to create a new one. If we have that deep connection to your souls and live as our own true selves, we can naturally become agents of creation and change this world.Tune In: Welcome Michael Meade to Inspired Evolution!: (00:00:00)Michael's journey into mysticism:(01:28)Myth as a real language:(04:07)Being vertically connected and what holds us back from these vertical imaginational pieces:(07:11)About what loss of imagination may be in service to:(10:52)Why many disconnect from mythical imagination:(17:41)Sense of listening and connection available in today's age:(25:04)Assuming responsibility in a collective awakening:(33:03)Support on a mythical journey:(43:05)Michael Meade books:Awakening the Soul: https://amz.run/4m9i The Genius Myth: https://amz.run/4m9j Fate and Destiny: The Two Agreements of The Soul: https://amz.run/4m5C Mentioned resources:Carl Jung: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Jung Connect with Michael Meade:Website: www.mosaicvoices.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelMeadeMosaic/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelmeade_mosaicvoicesTwitter: https://twitter.com/MMeade_MythYoutube channel: https://www.youtube.com/mosaicvoices Join the Inspired Evolution Community:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InspiredEvolution/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/InspiredEvo/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/InspiredEvolution/ Website: https://inspiredevolution.com/ Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/inspiredevolution. A Mythic Response to Our Times   In this profoundly deep and freewheeling conversation we cover so much soulful ground. We begin with one of our favorite topics that Michael Meade has been teaching on for years: Your innate genius. He tells of the origins of his teaching about genius with severely at-risk youth, and about how in honoring our unique genius we are all equal, across race, class, and other categories. We also explore the ancient notion that “the genius hides behind the wound,” made popular by Carl Jung; and the fact that for so many during these intense times, core wounds are activated, which means genius is nearby.    We explore the perspective of these times being one of initiation that can awaken us to ourselves, our gifts and wounds. Michael speaks about the function of community in initiation, what he’s learned over 35 years of studying and creating rites of passage. Micheal explains that while we are in a big time of “not knowing,” the soul knows exactly what this is in terms of initiation. Michael says we’re being called to new levels of humanity; to seeing one another as our home; and to the possibility of protests being rituals. Michael also speaks about the rituals that happen at his men’s retreats where the central part is opening the wounds of the culture with honest talk between men from widely diverse backgrounds; and the healing that comes from making a ritual of what happens.    Michael also talks about the second half of the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” which states, “If the young people aren’t welcomed into the village, they will burn it down just to feel the warmth,” and how we are seeing this happen now around the US and beyond.    We explore the topic of soul and Michael’s emphasis on the fact that if we want the world to change, it has to start in the human soul. We also weave a beautiful thread speaking to elders, deceased writers, people we revere - and the ways their souls are still reverberating in the world today.    Michael also discusses the importance of transformation in these times - that we must schedule that which is not working before building the new or returning to “normal.” He also elucidates beautifully the returning interest in rites of passage today. We also explore reimagining education, healthcare, politics; the way everyone’s genius is called forth by the times; and we end exploring the meaning of “apocalypsis” which is not the end of times, but collapse and renewal as we see in the model of the natural world.    What a wild and wise ride we had!! We hope you enjoy listening as much as we did.    Michael has a new live online series coming up which we highly recommend, and he’s offering our listeners a discount.  Read more below:   Thursday, July 2 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Pacific Time - Rites of Passage: Collective and Individual Friday, July 106:00 pm – 7:30 pm Pacific Time   - Die Before You Die Friday, July 17 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Pacific Time  - The Pathless Path Each 90-minute event includes story, poetry and a Q&A session. The crises of cosmological, mythological and psychological disconnection from nature and from each other may drive us to places of darkness and suffering; and yet there is great potential in that darkness to interact with creative energy. Retracing meaning through archetypal myth offers an opportunity to understand the great challenge of our time to heal the planet from its wounds, and to refresh our dominant worldview with one based on connection. This week, journey into Michael Meade’s expansive vision of awakening ancient meaning for the individual and collective consciousness. Michael Meade, D.H.L., is a renowned storyteller, author, and scholar of mythology, anthropology, and psychology. On this excerpt from the latest Living Myth Premium episode, Michael Meade answers questions about the soul posed by listeners.  One question is “what is the meaning of the original agreement of the soul?”  Another is “why is this first agreement so important that it is indelible in the soul?” Using ancient stories about the origin of the soul, Meade offers a compelling commentary on the soul’s way of bridging the two worlds, the eternal and the time bound.  Rather than being separated from the divine by an “original sin”, old stories depict the separation as an original forgetting of the unique pattern in each soul.  The rest of life involves a longing to reconnect to the eternal and live out the soul’s first agreement and original intention in life. This excerpt is from the first of a two-part Living Myth Premium podcast series on the two agreements of the soul. MAKING SOUL FOR A TROUBLED WORLD, with Michael Meade   How to make more soul for a world that seems to be falling apart?  “What you love is the cure”, reminds us mythologist Michael Meade.  In this conversation with the renowned storyteller, author, and scholar, we speak about why it's of the essence to get closer to what you  love and do more of it, so you can be in conversation with your own soul, harvesting its timeless resources for living a meaningful life and making more soul for the world. Join us for this rich conversation on the significance of lunar knowledge, embodied soul wisdom, mythological acupuncture, and living with purpose in times like ours. “We all hope our lives have meaning. The way to make sure of that is to love what we love and make more soul for the world. When we make more soul through our personal genius,  life is more present, things are more connected, and the world secretly more united.”   ABOUT MICHAEL MEADE Michael Meade, D.H.L., is a renowned storyteller, author, and scholar of mythology, anthropology, and psychology. He combines hypnotic storytelling, street-savvy perceptiveness, and spellbinding interpretations of ancient myths with a deep knowledge of cross-cultural rituals. For more information about Michael's work, books, and podcast:  www.mosaicvoices.org www.livingmyth.org THIS EPISODE's QUOTES “It can feel at first that we are falling, but really what we do is fall to the ground of the soul,  where we have each inherited deep resources for life. And in the soul there resides the genius of a person' life–– the spirit that is already there. There is a deep spirit in the soul of each person, and when things are falling apart, it is soul that we need to bring everything  back together.” “So we are experiencing in culture a loss of soul. And we are here to make more soul. It begins with the individual, with everyone's personal genius,  and once enough soul has been made by individuals, then we can reconnect to the collective and begin to change life. And our issues right now are so profound and widespread that we need many people's genius, and many people's soulful connections in order to build our way back to a meaningful culture, and a meaningful connection of culture to nature.”
