Dr. Carolyn Dean joined us on the show today to talk about a topic we don't discuss much on Extreme Health Radio. We talked about the importance of minerals and why minerals are the key to building great health. For those that don't know Dr. Carolyn Dean is the author of The Magnesium Miracle, Solve It with Supplements: The Best Herbal and Nutritional Supplements to Help Prevent and Heal More than 100 Common Health Problems and Dr. Carolyn Dean's Natural Prescriptions for Common Ailments. If you're interested all of Carolyn's books can be found by clicking here. We talked a lot about how important magnesium is in the body. Magnesium is similar to vitamin D3 in the sense that it's used by literally thousands of enzymatic process in the body. Magnesium is critical for our health yet about 99% of people are magnesium deficient. We're low in magnesium because magnesium is literally used in just about every aspect of our cells. Magnesium seems to be used for everything, much like vitamin D3. We also talked about the other minerals of the body as well, not just magnesium. We talked about how many health ailments can be traced back to low mineral counts in the body. Some might argue that minerals are more important and necessary for our health than vitamins. Personally I think both vitamins and minerals are equally important but people often overlook just how important minerals are to our health and vitality. I hope you enjoy this show with Dr. Carolyn Dean! If you liked it, please share! This episode was really fun to record because I had the opportunity to interview a good friend of mine, Dr. Robyn Murphy! What we unpacked in this episode is, what I really believe, is going to be the new frontier of health and medicine. This new frontier I'm talking about is this idea of ‘precision medicine' and individualized medicine. When I first started my career, that meant that we listened to the individualized stories, symptoms, and experiences of our patients to craft a unique approach to their health. Nowadays, however, this idea of individualized care and precision medicine means that we're able to look at the blueprint of your health; your actual DNA, to be able to understand how we can craft something that not only incorporates your life stories but enables us to address your health in a manner we never thought was possible. Dr. Robin Murphy is truly an expert at dissecting the intersection between genetics and lifestyle medicine. As the Scientific Advisor for DNA Labs — a Toronto-based genetic company that does lifestyle genetic testing as well as pharmacogenetic testing — there is no better guest than Dr. Murphy to discuss this concept of individualized care and unpack how it is going to directly impact the lives of our patients. Key Takeaways: [:47] About today's guest, Robyn Murphy! [2:05] Welcoming Dr. Murphy to the podcast! [4:11] Robyn shares the history of how genetic testing has been used in medicine. [6:40] Robyn provides context on why genetic testing is so incredibly important — but it also isn't the ‘end-all, be-all.' [11:18] Why learning about these lifestyle genetics is so empowering in terms of taking control of your health. [12:18] Robyn highlights the categories of genetic markers that are most commonly examined. [14:27] Why it's so crucial to work with a strategist to be able to dissect this information. Robyn shares how she clinically leverages this data to build out a unique lifestyle prescription for patients. [17:38] When prescribing a patient a diet or lifestyle that is based on their genes, are they expected to adhere to it for the rest of their life? [19:44] Robyn explains what epigenetics is all about! [23:42] Robyn speaks about some of the research around the genetic understanding of mental health. [29:42] Robyn provides her thoughts on pharmacogenomics. [33:03] Robyn shares what genetic testing actually looks like in practice as well as the privacy laws around it. Now sitting at nearly 150 episodes, I've come to realize that there's one topic that we haven't unpacked or explored nearly as much as we should have. And that is autoimmune conditions. Autoimmune conditions affect women infinitely more frequently than they do men — and especially for busy, stressed-out ladies like ourselves! So today, I've asked one of my friends — Dr. Alison Danby, a renowned expert on autoimmune conditions — to come on and share her wisdom all about autoimmune conditions. She's going to take us through why it is that so many women are actually missing out on the opportunity to be diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and what we should all be looking at not only to reverse them but to prevent them from emerging in the first place! Before her journey led her to naturopathic medicine, she received a Bachelor of Education in secondary school mathematics and health education at the University of Exeter, UK, teaching in England and Canada for two and a half years. Dr. Danby knew she wanted something different, though, and so she returned to Canada to attend medical school — but not your regular medical school. She wanted to learn proactive medicine so she completed a four-year program in Naturopathic Medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) in Toronto, Ontario. Dr. Alison Danby always knew there was more to learn and more to offer her future patients, so to further her education and compliment her background in Naturopathic medicine, she delved into the world of integrative and evidence-based medicine. She completed Advanced Training in Applied Functional Medicine at the Institute of Functional Medicine. Dr. Danby believes in the life-changing effects of Naturopathic Medicine, and so for the last half-decade, she has also been a representative on the Provincial and National Associations of Naturopathic Doctors. Many people think mineral deficiencies only occur in the developing world where food is scarce; but the reality is that most people are deficient in at least a few vitamins or minerals. Our soils are over-farmed leaving our foods nutrient poor, so even people eating the highest-quality of foods are susceptible to imbalances. Enter: magnesium. It's the 8th most abundant mineral on earth and affects everything from bowel regularity and cramps to sleep quality and digestion. It's found in nuts, seeds, greens, and even rice—and yet, most people only get about 1/2 their daily recommended allowance from food alone. For yoga students, magnesium is one of the top minerals (right up there with sulfur) as it helps muscles relax and balances the nervous system—both essential for bendy bodies. On this week's Yoga Talk Show, you'll learn why magnesium deficiency is so common, and more importantly, some very simple tests to fix it safely at home. ------------ Listen & Learn: Why most people only get about 200mg of magnesium per day How magnesium dosage will self-regulate by sending you to the toilet if you have too much Why magnesium is essential for ATP (energy) production How to get tested for magnesium deficiency Recommended dosage: up to 600 mg/day of magnesium citrate (orally) or 2 cups of Epsom salts in a bath ABOUT OUR GUEST Carolyn Dean is a medical doctor and naturopath.
