Today our guest Brooke Ansley, a 700-hour Certified Hypnotherapist, 200-hour Registered Yoga Instructor and creator of Happy Body Blueprint, created a community that teaches women how to reclaim control over their health and habits with self hypnosis. And, she recently launched her new podcast, Happy Body to make an even further impact on wellness. She used to pride herself on how busy she was. You know that “hustle” mentality that sucks the soul right out of you? She equated her hustle directly to her worth. As it often happens, a defining moment wakes us up from being unconscious to our actions and behaviors. After a regular doctor appointment that resulted in sending her home with meds which only exacerbated the feelings of being disconnected from her body, she changed everything. The gift in this overwhelming challenge sent her on a transformative health and wellness journey. Her story is very relatable. Training her critical mind reinvented every part of herself and her life. It became her new career platform to help women with tools to live more in a state of calm, peace, spiritual connection and dignity. Brooke's story could be the solution you are looking for to tame that everyday overwhelm and anxiety. Join her community at happybodyblueprint.com and listen to happy body podcast. This interview with Kailey Lena is a breath of fresh air. Kailey is the founder of Energetic Wellness, a Registered Nurse, 200 hr Registered Yoga Instructor and Energy worker. The essence of her work is to facilitate self-healing by helping clients identify underlying mind, body and spirit challenges. Kailey started out in traditional medicine, working at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor in the Pediatric Cardiothoracic ICU. She decided to pursue more holistic and root cause healing, connecting her patients with the energetic and spiritual systems that we all have within us. Coupled with lifestyle coaching, Kailey uses the Morphogenic Field Technique. The morphogenic field is the extension of the body's nervous system. Our bodies are pure energy at their cores, and each cell communicates through electronic signals. These electronic signals stimulate our hearts to beat, our lungs to breathe, our reflexes to keep us safe, and the manner in which our cells react to good and bad substances that we introduce to our bodies. This is our built-in, intelligent system that allows us to evolve, maintain youth and generate more energy. Tapping into your unique field of energy allows for infinite possibilities for healing and personal growth. While Kailey is passionate about helping everyone, her focus is to hold space for young adults as they enter a new world of starting careers, friendships, families, habits and lifestyles that will shape their health and wellbeing. Please share this episode with a young adult in your life that could benefit from this message! In this Moxie by Proxy episode, Sarah Getz explores the moxie of her father, The New Yorker magazine cover artist Arthur Kimmig Getz. We talk about Arthur's creative and pragmatic moxie and explore the intergenerational and intentional moxie of Sarah in her yoga instruction and her own medium for her creativity–writing. Between 1938 and 1988, Arthur Kimmig Getz created 213 covers for The New Yorker, making him the most prolific cover artist for the magazine of the twentieth century. Arthur was also a fine artist, wrote and illustrated children's books, and taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, the University of Connecticut, and the Washington Art Association in Washington, Connecticut. In addition to his New Yorker covers and spot drawings, Arthur's illustrations were published in numerous other publications. Arthur was also a fine artist. In 1960 he was offered his first one-man show at the Babcock Gallery in New York City. The gallery director requested that Arthur, already well known for his covers, exhibit his fine art under a different name, concerned that his association with “commercial" (illustration) art would hinder his recognition as a fine artist. Arthur chose to use his middle name, Kimmig, for his signature on his fine artwork.Sarah has a moxie of her own. She teaches yoga-inspired somatic self-care practices both online and locally. The former director of Yoga at Space in Lakeville, CT, Sarah has been a Certified and Registered Yoga Instructor since 1994. Sarah is a word witch, a cat lady, a cancer survivor, a tree hugger, and a devotee of unsweetened chocolate. For more information about Arthur Kimmig Getz and Sarah Getz, visit the podcast show notes at our Main Street Moxie website. This episode is sponsored by Elyse Harney Real Estate and North East Ford.

No matter what study you read on body image, the results are disturbing. One says that more than 90 percent of women are unhappy with their bodies. Another says that 46 percent of 9-11 year-old girls are “sometimes” or “very often” on diets, and 82 percent of their families are ‘”sometimes” or “very often” on diets. And it's not just an issue for women. It's reported that more than a third of all men are unhappy with their bodies and 20 percent say they would consider plastic surgery. But why? Why are we so unhappy with ourselves? Where did we learn what our bodies "should" look like? And what would it take for us to be "happy?" To help us answer these questions, we turn to Certified Health and Wellness Coach Shelby O'Keefe in this episode. Special Guest: Shelby O'KeefeShelby is a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and an ADAPT Certified Functional Health Coach (A-CFHC). In addition, she is a 200 Registered Yoga Instructor with an emphasis in Trauma Sensitive Yoga. Her expertise is in positive psychology, body and mind connection and empathetic communication. Welcome back to The Simplicity Sessions, I'm delighted that you've joined us today. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. This is a special episode today because it is my birthday. I have a unique birth story as I was adopted at birth; I was raised by my wonderful adoptive parents and met my birth parents when my daughter was 10 months old. I wanted to tell you this story because it made me into the woman, mother, and wife that I am today. My birth parents had me when they were 15 (mother) and 16 (father) years old. My mother didn't even know she was pregnant until she was 5 months along because she was having irregular periods due to her young age. My adoptive parents already had a daughter but decided to adopt another child after tragically losing my older brother Christopher at 19 months old after recovering from surgery to repair five holes in his heart. Soon after I was born and my adoptive parents took me into their care, they found out they were pregnant with my younger brother, Matthew (younger by 8 months). Life as a child within my adoptive parents' family was wonderful. I always felt loved and supported by my parents who told me I was adopted at a young age. I took pride in my adoptive status. I gave an award-winning speech in grade three on my adoptive story. My parents gave me the forms to find my birth parents at the age of 17. I was excited; however, I didn't fill out the forms right away because I had the opportunity to finish high school early to move to Japan and work as a model. I went away to school when I got back from Japan. It wasn't until I was married and pregnant with my first child, Emerson, that I decided I wanted to find out more about my birth parents to find out the family health history. After filling out a series of forms and a lot of patience, I finally got the chance to meet and speak to my birth mother. I discovered that my birth parents stayed together, got married, and had three more children: Matt, Spencer, and Emma. A fourth child, my parents' second pregnancy, was lost (another boy), which was similar to my adoptive parents' experience. I was very nervous when I first met my birth parents, but I was fortunate that my adoptive parents prepared a number of pictures when I was a baby to show my birth parents. I discovered that my birth siblings did not know about me. My birth parents never told them about me because my birth was a secret due to the nature of the times and how people would react to a young teenage pregnancy. It took me a long time to figure out how I felt about gaining an entire family that I did not know well. I would spend a lot of time with my birth parents and my birth siblings, but it was difficult to accept that my daughter would call them grandparents. Over time, I was able to get over the emotionally draining times and grew a bond with my birth family. I am forever grateful that I have this big extended family from which my husband, kids, and I interact with on a regular basis. Meeting my birth family and being raised by my adoptive family with such love and support throughout my life has shaped me into the person I am today, and for that I am eternally grateful. If you have a question for me and my team, send it over to hello@jennpike.com or via Instagram at @jennpike and I'll do my best to share helpful insights, thoughts and advice. And my sister lost him.” “I have a baby coming in September and I have a baby coming in October. Would you like one of these babies? There has never been a moment in my life where I have not felt loved from inception.” “I am so grateful to my mom and dad for being the home that my soul and my spirit needed in order to become the young girl, the mother, and the woman that I am today, because they're responsible” “...now I think I'm ready to fill out the forms because I want to know more about my health history. I want to know more about things that I need to understand in my own body and if I'm susceptible to anything. Now that we're starting to have children, I want to know it for them.” “...she says, hi, can I speak with Jennifer? And I said, yep and start crying. She says ‘hi, my name is Leslie. I am your birth mom'” “But at the same time, it was so emotionally draining and exhausting. Now we are at these points in our life where we have a really great relationship.” “I believe that I have had such a healthy relationship with my whole adoption story and with all of these new things happening and meeting my whole birth family, because my mom and dad were honest with me from day one.” “And that we may not arrive here in the family that we are going to be raised by, but we can most definitely end up in a family that we are meant to be loved and raised by. I think one of the most pivotal parts of our conversation, which is about three quarters in, is driving home this message: weight loss is the first goal for many of the clients that Breanne works with. But the key is actually being able to maintain the weight you use for as long as possible. Now in order to really wrap your head around what I mean by that, you are going to have to listen to the full episode, as we lay the groundwork up to that point in the conversation. Our goal is that this important message resonates with you and you leave us today with a deeper understanding of your own body and how your decisions affect it. You can find links below, in the ‘Connect with us' section, to Dr. Breanne Kallonen's multi-platform health services as well as her social media and websites. They have lots of things going on and it's not always easy to prioritize, getting in crazy amounts of nutrition every single day. The way that I look at weight loss, especially weight loss resistance - how can we help them to make it as easy as possible. “ “Diving into the research and looking at the impacts of insulin and how we can use meal timing for that, and really strategic workouts.” “Maybe being normal doesn't necessarily mean optimal” “Over time as our food quality has gone down, or just the types of foods that we're eating, I saw research studies showing 88% of the US population has insulin resistance. So if you're eating and you're continuing to spike your insulin all the time, insulin is a fat storage hormone, making it really hard to lose weight.” “The reality too is that our human bodies are constantly evolving. And especially like if you're working with women, I mean, there's different times of the month. There's different phases in our life where we're going to need a different amount of each of the macronutrients in order to feel our best and for our body” “When you're running the functional tests, you're running the full blood lab, like thyroid panel, all of that, you're running like, are you doing GI map, test and Dutch testing, those types of things for the gut. It depends on the individual.” “How can scaling back on exercise cause me to lose weight? Well, it's a lot of inflammation and exercise can increase your appetite too. So if you don't have your nutrition and your sleep and your stress dialed in. You're not going to see the results that you want from the exercise, or it could be detrimental.” “Maintenance is the most important part. That's where people really struggle is how do I create a sustainable lifestyle that feels flexible, that I can sustain” “Some individuals are not necessarily hungry. Their satiety cues haven't caught up, but again, the point is not to suffer through hunger. If you're hungry, have something” “If we're struggling with resistant weight loss and the obesity epidemic and diabetes, there is no better time. Just learning how to properly fuel your body to maintain health long term.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Welcome back to The Simplicity Sessions, I'm delighted that you've joined us today. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. Today's conversation is with Susan Baker. Susan Baker is the mom of two beautiful children, Andrew, 13, and Abby, 9. She is the author of Life, Love & Autism, an online blog that chronicles her family's journey of growth and challenge, including love, loss, and an autism diagnosis. She is a holistic nutritionist by training and has been in the natural health industry since 2001. She continues to inspire health in others through her online programs and social media presence. Susan lives in Toronto with her husband and children. "Life, Love & Autism is a beautiful documentation of life as a family. Often hilarious, sometimes hard, but most certainly, inspiring, Life, Love & Autism is raw, real, and relatable. The stories go far beyond autism; they are about the human connection and what brings us together. The joy, the challenge, and the learning that comes from it all. A journey-- lived, documented, and shared.” Jenn and Susann discuss how Susan's life has changed after having children and searching for ways to improve the quality of life of her eldest, Andrew, who was diagnosed with non-verbal autism. You will hear about the inspiring story of a mother that will do anything to help her child become all that he could be instead of trying the “fix” him. Quotes “My spirituality really allowed me to see this unfolding in a way that was meant for my life.” “Can it be okay to be, you know, yeah? The opposite of strong, can it be okay to accept help? Can it be okay to say, you know what? There are other people in my life who love and care for my children and they can take care of them just like I can” “It's not another woman, another person is being open about it. You can feel and see yourself inside of that. And that's what I think, you talk about these stories going far beyond what you and your family unit are experiencing. That's where the connection piece comes in and why people are so drawn to it.” “What does this child need? I just said I don't know, but I will never give up. I will never give up on my child. And that wasn't me thinking there was some kind of miracle solution that I was missing. It wasn't about that, right? It wasn't about waiting to fix this child, but it. I know there's more, I know there's more and so I'm open and I don't know what that looks like. And within a couple of weeks, I met a family who was using a method of communication that involves spelling on a letter board, a very simple method, but it's one that's unconventional.” “I am, I would say, yeah, a new version of Susan Baker, which is somebody who continues to work at this, but is so much more trusting in the process of life. And partly because I can look back on examples of where I pushed myself to trust in the process of life. And it unfolded in a way I could never have predicted, but that brought me to an incredible place because I trusted in this process and I let go where I thought I should be going, what I thought I should be doing, what I thought I should be doing for Andrew or Abby. Um, and that's very difficult for my personality, but you know, I'm 44 this year and that is who I am now is just somebody who is more open to. You know, doing things in a way, I guess I, I'm not typically programmed to do it, you know? Last week, I was discussing Leaky Gut; what it is, what the heck is going on and what are some of the things that you can start to do or things that you can begin to be aware of and understand in your body that can make a big difference in your digestive system. Today, we are going to talk through additional steps and tactics that you can do regarding nutrition and supplementation to support your digestive system. Now, a little disclaimer - while I am a practitioner, I may not be your practitioner. So what I'm going to talk about in this episode, as I did last week, is not necessarily me saying, you need to go out and buy this and take this and do this, I'm going to talk in general terms. Quotes “Bone broth, the reason I love it is because it contains collagen and it's got great amino acids, glycine being one of them that can really help to heal the damaged cell. “Fermented foods can really help to support the pH balance and microbiome as a whole.” “Coconut products tend to do really well for people with gut issues because they're loaded with medium chain fatty acids, and those can be easier to digest than some other fats. They also work really well to help to lubricate the digestive system, keep the bowels flowing well.” “Sprouted chia or spread and flax hemp. I find to be really powerful and quite a neutral seed for people who may have sensitivities. These are also really rich in protein and amino acids and a great source of fiber” “Think about those things first. Think about your stress. Your sleep, your environment pay. And then we look at the supplements that can help.” “Probiotics are meant to help to replenish and support healthy, good bacteria. And essentially to crowd out the bad bacteria, prebiotics feed the probiotics (prebiotics are the food for the probiotics).” “When I'm working with somebody who has H pylori or who has CBO or who has candida, I won't start with the probiotics right out of the gate. We do a kill protocol. We do a heal protocol. We do a reinoculate rebalance protocol and it has to happen in steps for a lot of women.” “Remember, it's never going to be just the one thing you can't go out and simply just start to take supplements and then expect digestion to be healed. You can't just remove food and add in bone broth and expect everything to be healed. It's going to be a combination. It is going to take effort, but within that, there also has to be learning and understanding” “Make the investment in yourself, figure out what's going on. So you can get to your healing much faster because whatever's going on in your gut or your butt or the combination of both it's impacting the rest of your health. Overall, it's going to impact your weight. It's going to impact your immune system. It'll impact your energy. Sleep, your hormones, your hair, your skin, the way that your brain functions, your cognition, your sharpness, your clarity, your focus, it will impact all of those things.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. She is a sexual health disruptor and evolver, a naturopathic doctor, and the author of The Pink Canary. We're taught that we're supposed to have a sex drive, that you're supposed to naturally be hornier than you are, and that your sex life is supposed to peak. And so many women hit a point in their life where they think, “That did not happen to me, it is not happening to me- there must be something wrong with me.” We talk about issues that can impact feminine libido, including stress, communication, and health, including mental health. We don't just talk about what's going wrong; we identify some of the more common things that women are feeling and going through, and then really give you feasible solutions. If you have a question for me and my team, send it over to hello@jennpike.com or via Instagram at @jennpike and I'll do my best to share helpful insights, thoughts and advice. Today, I am speaking to one of the women in our Audacious Woman mentorship programme, Shannon Feir. She is a registered nurse and has been on the front line this entire year and a half and working in healthcare for 30+ years where she has seen a chronic level of burnout and burnout culture. In this episode, we will be discussing how to do ‘all the things' without burning yourself out, without creating a health issue for your own self and body. Shannon is real and loving and brings wonderful humour to our conversation. Shannon has worked her entire career, decades, taking care of other people and being a nurse and really excelling at it. But she wants something more. She's raised her children and she's at a time in her life where she can start to make some different decisions. So as a nurse, a self-care and resiliency coach, and a heart math certified practitioner, she helps kickass female healthcare workers build resiliency. She does this by being on the front lines for decades and she offers coaching and programs to help women show up and do the job that needs to get done in those moments on your feet, on your toes - when you need critical thinking in the moment. To inquire about and join The 12-week Frontline Resiliency Reset Formula program, click the following link: https://www.shannonfeir.com. Quotes: “I feel like over the past 30 years, things have certainly changed, in the culture of healthcare, particularly with women.” “My mission now has been to help women in healthcare build their resiliency so that they can balance their career in healthcare, as well as having a beautiful life that they desire at home.” “You wear the mask at work when you support people, you take their energy on, and I feel like the culture of healthcare, we have not done a fantastic job on building resources internally, whether it's your organization or from a personal perspective where we support each other” “We don't have the tools inside. We're not taught the tools to be able to be vulnerable, right. When you get home.” “Like you get guilt, you feel guilty about wanting more, so you kind of stay small and then that's kind of how burnout starts. Right. It's slow, it's not just one event. It's not like one thing happens, it's this cumulative stressors that you don't process” “We need to have that permission to be vulnerable. And if we can't do that at home because of, you know, PHIPAA, confidentiality, whatever. You know, we need to have somewhere, we need to have a group where we can be supportive to each other and allow the permission that it's ok not to be ok.” “I wholeheartedly believe that in order to prevent and manage burnout, you need to have a foundation that improves your personal resiliency.” “My goal is to reach my hand out to these women, thousands and thousands of women, to show them that it doesn't have to be so hard. So think like undigested food pathogens, bacteria viruses, to be able to pass out into our bloodstream, which is going to cause us inflammation and massive digests.” “So what happens with leaky gut is that over time, and this can be for a few different reasons that we'll talk about, these junctions start to break down. Your retaining wall starts to falter, starts to crack, starts to have seeps and openings. And now things that should not be getting in or moving out are, and this is what creates a response or reaction in your body. This is when you start to have food sensitivities and allergies and auto-immune responses and things that are characterized like IBS, hormone imbalances, different gut infections and more” “When you have some level of increased intestinal permeability, which is what leaky gut is referred to, there is a crack or multiple cracks, and now we're having things get in that are causing us those issues.” “Tons of people are walking around with something called H pylori. And if you have H pylori, which is a gut infection, this is a bacteria that specifically goes in and decreases the amount of hydrochloric acid that you can produce in your. Today, I am going to be discussing a new topic for this podcast, CBD. This is an insightful and educational conversation with Danny Dolgin, CEO and co-founder of Eaton Hemp. Now, I do want to preface this by saying I did not have anxiety, I didn't have insomnia, I didn't actually have anything going on that typically people would start to use this for. For me, I was getting so many questions from women in my community, asking my opinion about CBD and my experience. And I couldn't give my opinion, because I'd never had an experience. I'm not going to recommend something or talk about something that I've not yet used. So after trying it myself, through a great partnership with a strong focus on education, my goal today is to help you to understand a little bit more about what CBD is and what it is not. If you have a question for me and my team, send it over to hello@jennpike.com or via Instagram at @jennpike and I'll do my best to share helpful insights, thoughts and advice. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, I am going to speak to a question that I received while writing a big article for a strong fitness magazine that is all around the importance of the education that we really should have access to as women, about our cycles, cycle syncing and that level of connection. The question was ‘Why is it important for women to recognize and honor that they are cyclical and not linear beings? What's the benefit there for the average woman?' This is the kind of information you can anticipate coming out in the fall. Not only in this article, but in some additional resources that we are creating for you. My main mission is to help women, to help young girls, to help all of us connect to this deep knowing and understanding of our bodies, because we have been given, in my opinion, the most incredible gift of life being a female. And there's so much that we can tap into, but we don't, we don't know that because we're not educated about it. Socially, in so many areas of the world, it's not acceptable to even talk about these things, let alone understand more about what's going on. You have to dig, you have to search. And it shouldn't be that way. The very fact that we are born women into this world means that we should have full accessibility to understanding or getting the manual for or, at the very least, a blueprint to the body that we have been blessed with. Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite in order of priority: Speaking to your questions How every day is different Optimizing your hormonal health Observation is key to a healthy reproductive system Tracking your cycle Where is our manual, our blueprint? Symptoms are our messengers So please do not hesitate to book in a call with one of our team via https://jennpike.com/thehormoneproject Links and resources mentioned in this episode will be shared in the Online Work with Jenn section of these show notes. You were never in the same cycle phase twice. Every day is different. Your body is physically, physiologically, mentally and emotionally in a constant state of ebb and flow.” “When you show up each day to your body, to your life, to your calendar, to your workouts, your nutrition, and you engage in the same activities of hustle and grind, energy, you are living counter-intuitively to your own body's hormonal fluctuations. And it's completely counterproductive. This is a huge energy waste for women and often leaves them exhausted and burnt out.” “When you learn how to plan your workouts, your nutrition, your other activities of life around yourself, You'll be optimizing your hormonal health finally, to begin to understand when it is the best time of month for you to push or pull back, to put yourself out there or to take more rest.” “The truth is that observation is the main event and the telltale sign of a healthy reproductive system. Your period is the culmination of the other three phases that lead into and result in shedding your uterine lining.” “It is extremely beneficial for women to know this information as they transition into perimenopause. Instead of feeling like you are surprised and you just woke up one morning and everything shifted, you would be able to go back now and actually track that data that you have been collecting and start to understand and see when changes happened. Ask yourself the question, what was going on?” “The reason it's so important for us to track is not just to have another app in our life. It is so that we actually have our own. Interpersonal or internal recognition of what is going on in our body.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Like that was my bigger, why, which was a great motivator and great start. And I had that energy and that like, anger of like, I'll show you I'll show I'll prove you wrong. But when you're trying to prove the world wrong, you burn out and you're doing it from an angry place, but it got me started. So. Then I fell in love with meditation and mindfulness because of his behavior, not my behavior, his behavior.” “So now my focus is how good can it get? How good can I feel? Um, And I watch how cultural perceptions of who I need to be shows up and how far removed I am from that.” “you have to observe your own behavior and go, why is it that when I actually create space for myself, I'm so incredibly uncomfortable.” “ I had to rise and it was, it sucked and I had to figure it out, but it forced me to take my power back. It wasn't about so much the treatment. It was the journey to get there. Um, it forced me to take my power back. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, I will be sharing with you about energy expectations, expectations we have for ourselves, as well as those put onto us by others in our family, community, place of work, and society as a whole. Our individual capacity is a currency and we need to be aware of how it impacts us and those around us when we are beyond capacity, essentially when we are over spending. Today, we will talk about how we as women already carry a disproportionate amount of the responsibility, support, and work to take care of our families, our careers, and our communities, and how the last 16 months have impacted what's happening globally and in our own backyards. We will delve into how we can support each other but ultimately how we can each support ourselves by doing the work, because while we can support each other, no one else can do the actual work for you. And I want to say to all of you that I see you. I see you in my clinical practice. I see you in my programs, in my community, through my zoom screen. And I see you in the mirror. I see you and I am you too. Energy flows where attention and intentions go. Never forget that. They are part of the team of support. They're your support network. They can't move in with you. They can't make the changes for you.” “No one else can do the work for you. Nobody else. People can be the connectors, the conduits, and they can help to show you and teach you. They can educate you with the different tools and resources and opportunities, but no one can do it for you” “It's us being aware of being at capacity feeling spent and exhausted, and then how that impacts the way that we show up, how we treat other people, the words that we use, the tone that we use, the energy around it, it all matters so much. “I see you. I feel you. I am feeling it too. Women are not doing okay right now. Mothers are not doing it right. We already carry a disproportionate amount of the responsibility, support, and work to take care of our families, our careers, our communities, and in the last 16 months have had the impact of what's happening globally and our own backyards. The four walls of our home, the chambers within our hearts and the cells of our very being and spirit pushed to the very brink of our individual capacity. We have been coerced into a place of constant fear and anxiety. We have outsourced our health to others. We have disconnected from trusting our own bodies, our deep knowing and guidance from within we've stopped asking how do I feel? And we've replaced it with doing what you're told and what will they think? The more I sit with women in practice. In my mentorship in community and in real life, the more I hear and I feel their struggles. We are exhausted. We're overworked. We're making decisions that don't feel real true, or like they are our own, we're taking care of others when we long to be taken care of, we're longing to see and feel the light at the end of a very long and what feels like never ending tunnel women, tune out the judgment and tune. To your body. Stop bowing to the shedding and be open to the cutting. What could you do today? What do you need today? Rest nature, alone, time connection, fun, delicious food, a hug, a movie. A good cry, pleasure. All the rules, the list and the rigid boxes we are trying to live inside of. They are slowly eroding away at the strong, bold, loving, fierce, courageous, feminine desire, filled audacious women that we are, the rules are slowly killing us in a way that many aren't able to do. I see, I see you. I see you in my clinical practice. I see you in my programs, in my community, through my zoom screen. And I see you in the mirror. I see you and I am you too. Energy flows where attention and intentions go. Never forget that. Where will your energy go? Now? Take a deep breath and a moment to really sink into it. Sending you all big love. “If you don't talk about it, if you don't share, if you don't let other people know, if you don't ask three little words, I need help. Not only are you harming yourself, you are making it impossible for another woman to do that for herself. Understand that every single time that you squeeze and contract your muscle of courage and bravery and audacity, and you speak with your shaky voice and you type with your shaking things. You are creating global permission for another woman, for young girls, for women everywhere to do the same.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. From the media perspective, they'll say that is an anti-something or a conspiracy theorist.' “It's not that we just can't accept that our world is changing, It's what do I do about it?... every voice is so important in this evolution that we're going through. But there are different ways that you can go about it. It's a matter of what your comfort level is” “If you are living in a lot of fear and uncertainty we have to start really, really small. We have to start within our own four walls. How can you create a deeper level of calm, certainty, warmth, and connectedness in your own home?” “We've got to be balanced out ourselves first before we branch out. And I think that is such an important reminder.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, we will be discussing a question that I hear a lot, one that I think about often, which is How can I heal my hormones for good? As women, our bodies are ever-changing, ever cycling, ever-evolving and therefore there is going to be a bit of undulation that will happen based on where your body is at, how your body is feeling, what you are experiencing. What I want to share with you today is how you can work on the foundation so that you can make sure that things like your gut, adrenals, blood sugar, your thyroid, and your sex hormones are getting the attention and the care that they ultimately need. You can find a graphic on this topic on our Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/jennpike/ Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite in order of priority: Digestion and Gut Insulin levels Adrenal function and hormones Thyroid Sex hormones Symptoms are our messengers So please do not hesitate to book in a call with one of our team via https://jennpike.com/thehormoneproject Links and resources mentioned in this episode will be shared in the Online Work with Jenn section of these show notes. We want to make sure you are able to digest what you're consuming, break it down, pull the nutrients from it, and that you're free from digestive issues, gut infections, inflammation. So it's really important that the digestive and the assimilation piece is happening as well as the elimination piece, that you're pooping on a daily basis.” “From there it's then working on supporting your insulin, managing your blood sugar and your insulin levels... if your blood sugar is not stable and you are now in a state of stress as a result of it, That will impact your digestion and increase your rate of inflammation.” “Your adrenals are so critical because it is how our body is responding to stress. It is what is building up our resiliency, helping to support our immune system, helping to support the thyroid, helping to support ovarian health.” “Your brain health is super important and your mitochondria health mean everything” “I encourage you to prioritize in order of gut, blood sugar, adrenals, thyroid, then the sex hormone.” “The symptoms are the messengers. It's what we need to pay attention to. You want to start to write some things down, collect some data about your body, pay attention, and then begin to start to put these things into place.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. And it's not just about what we eat, but it's how we live when we eat, who we eat with” “Our hormones function in different ways. They relate. They are chemical messengers, writing a story, they are energetic messengers and they're led and driven.” “When we focus on what's good in our lives, what we're focusing on is where we feel love, what you know is beautiful in our lives, the things that bring us joy and pleasure, that's oxytocin. That's the hormone of oxytocin. It's a different energy. It's the most alkalizing hormone in our body. It's the most healing hormone in our body. And let's focus on those things that are good, noteworthy, positive, beautiful, bring you pleasure, joy, connection, the relationships, and people that you love and laugh with” “You have to be very intentional nowadays to choose the joy, to find the happiness and the bliss. So no more snacking and just creating these lifestyle practices to empower our physiology.” “Keto green is really helpful at any part of the life cycle, but it is essential and mandatory in menopause and perimenopause. It is essential and mandatory in perimenopause because these hormone shifts and this declining glucose, you know, this decline in progesterone and estrogen Our brain needs estrogen.” “How you're beginning the day to set yourself up before your breakfast is important, and then at the end of the day, priming your nervous system and getting your body ready for a good night.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, we will be opening up about our individual capacity and how to recognize when we are beyond capacity. And in order to feel resilient or to have true resiliency, you have to first understand what your individual capacity is. I believe it is important for each of us to reiterate to ourselves and the women in our lives that it is ok to say no, to give yourself that permission, and treat yourself with more love and self-compassion. Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite: Beyond capacity Capacity is learned How our cycle can affect our capacity Gut instinct Giving yourself permission to say no So please do not hesitate to book in a call with one of our team via https://jennpike.com/thehormoneproject Links and resources mentioned in this episode will be shared in the Online Work with Jenn section of these show notes. Then I pay for that when it's in the second half of my cycle, or when I'm feeling heavy” “Where do you hear your own voice? Where do you have the time to grow your own self-awareness and to form and choose your own opinions, your own core values? In any capacity in life.” “It's okay, to be honest and say, when someone asks, Hey, could you help me with this? I'm sorry, but I'm at capacity. Hey, could you go get this for me? I'm sorry, but I'm at capacity. Whatever the thing is, it's actually okay. If your gut instinct is like, I literally don't have room for that.” “I am only one, but I am one. Today, we are speaking with the lovely Dr. Jordan Robertson ND, a naturopathic doctor who specializes in women's health, hormones and fertility. She is the host of the Women's Health Unplugged podcast and author of Carrying To Term, the practical guide that teaches you specific strategies to support your fertility journey and reduce the risk of miscarriage or pregnancy loss. We begin this episode on a very personal note. Jordan shares with me her own experiences, suffering from multiple miscarriages and her fertility struggles. And how, even as a health professional, she really struggled to advocate for herself, as well as the proper testing, treatment, and care she knew that she needed and deserved. One of the biggest takeaways from today's conversation with Jordan is that we have the ability, as functional health practitioners, to see a woman's health vulnerability before it actually gets to a point where she needs further intervention, whether it be medical or otherwise. Not only are we able to recognize this, we then do our utmost to support and implement strategies to help her get better. Your story matters, we need to band together and work together. Not only as clinicians and practitioners but women as a whole to stop this dismissive nature around our health and our wellbeing from happening. She is known for her relentless search for the best quality evidence in integrative medicine and her willingness to stand up for women as they pursue their health goals” “When I wrote Carrying to Term back at the beginning of my career, it was right on the heels of me having three miscarriages. And at that time I was a graduated health professional, and yet I still couldn't really advocate for myself.” “Can we change a woman's story? Can we help her support herself so that she doesn't suffer… the answer is yes?” “Regardless of the age of the woman or the health concern, the story that she has to tell matters. And what I mean by the story is that there are clues hidden in your health history. There are clues hidden, maybe in your family history that would potentially change what your baseline risk is.” “It pays off to chat with someone about what those underlying conditions are how they can specifically contribute to miscarriage. Because for women with PCOS, it's not the same reason that women miscarry as it is the reason why women with endometriosis miscarry, you probably need slightly different supports.” “With perimenopause, it's stretched out over years and years of experience, which coincides with maybe having adult children, aging parents, at the peak of their career… pinnacle years for women, where they are also having the hormonal carpet pulled out from underneath them.” “The best way to describe perimenopause is like it's Sunday and your uterus thinks it was last Thursday, right?” “When women track their cycle, they actually develop self-compassion for themselves.” “The stress of worrying about menopause actually worsens your menopause… energy flows where attention goes” “Something women can do for themselves - A is be mindful of their non-exercise movement cause your bodies were made to move, but also reflect on what your barriers to movement are.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, we will be discussing your hormone concerns and whether they are being dismissed. One of my biggest concerns as a healthcare practitioner who has chosen to focus on women's health and hormones is that when it comes to women's hormonal health, Our concerns, our symptoms, our issues are far too often being dismissed. And what's important to understand is that our intuition, that guides us, is often a direct conduit for that inner balance in your body. The way we feel when things are not right, is literally your body communicating with you on the deepest level. And you know when something is off and this should be taken seriously, you should be taken seriously and it should be addressed in a caring and thoughtful way. Even with the best practitioner, their job and role is to educate you, to help support you with the tools and the resources to empower you, to guide you. But you, you are the only one that can create the power pause that can either put things into action for your health. So I want you to start to peel back. I want you to begin to take note of what is truly going on in your body. Then find the team, create your village. This is what my team thrives off of, is helping women just like you. Not by doing it for you, but by linking arms, cutting through the BS, and doing it alongside you. So please do not hesitate to book in a call with one of our team via https://jennpike.com/thehormoneproject Links and resources mentioned in this episode will be shared in the Online Work with Jenn section of these show notes. Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite: There isn't always a pill for the ill Attention disparity Dismissal culture If you are being dismissed, find another practitioner Take control of your own health Create your village, they are out there! And no one is going to look any deeper.” “We cannot just be handing the pill out like candy and like it's a prescription for solving every single hormonal problem because it is compounding the issues that are really going on. And that type of prescribing, in my opinion, is part of the dismissal society that is happening right now” “This is why ladies if you are a woman who has been dismissed, I'm going to strongly encourage you to stand back up on those strong legs and two feet that you have got and walk yourself into a different office. Walk yourself into a different virtual setting, which is how many practitioners are functioning now until you find the person where you're like - Everything they say, the way they describe it, how they teach that is resonating with me.” “You also cannot hand over the responsibility of your health to anyone else, whether this is the best practitioner, someone that you super connect with, or somebody not so much. They get directly into the body, into the stomach without having to go through all of the other channels.” “I think sometimes we get very wrapped up in just the physical of like what we eat and what we supplement with without taking into consideration everything else.” “The first law is what I call the love vitality, the vital force.” “The second is the law of disease...the founder of naturopathic medicine states that disease is caused by three things...and in modern language, these are - deficiency, toxicity, and weak vitality.” “Looking at their symptoms which are really a reflection of an imbalance of imbalances. It's the way their body's pivoting, almost light a fighter... I don't see their symptoms as something that's wrong. It's more like this is the way their body compensated for an imbalance.” “I think it's how we've been taught. It's how we've been trained. You know, there's a pill for your ill. So just tell me the ill, give me the pill and let me move on. But then that person never actually feels better. They don't achieve vitality.” “ The powerful thing is that it's not having the right modality or having the right supplement, it's having the right way of thinking. I find that so liberating” “Your body will never lie to you” The fourth law is the Law of Compensation. Again from the founder of Naturopathic medicine, in his book, Nature Cure, written in 1913, he said that - ‘Everything you do to the body has first a primary action that is easily observed, and it's short-lived, It's transient, it lasts a short time. Then there's always a secondary reaction that goes in the opposite direction of the first that is actually much more long-lasting and more potent.” “The sixth law is the Law of Synergy - we can combine different therapies, different modalities, and they have a much greater effect than if they were just used individually...certain plants, when used together, are much more powerful than by themselves.” “A lot of that convenience, food, and lifestyle is leading to a very inconvenient decrease in our health” “Cytokines, in their very essence, are signaling cells and they're little proteins that cascade, one into the next.” “The seventh law is arguably the most important of them all, the Law of Intention. We really are the summation of what we think and feel and believe. And so what we intend, if we can visualize healing, that has an enormous impact on the outcome.” “Listen to your body, listen to its feedback, and then start to apply these different healing laws” “You just have to be willing to sit back and observe to sometimes press pause and to allow the innate power and ability of your body to step forward.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, we will be discussing an important topic that came up during a Hormone Project team meeting a few weeks ago. One of our program advisors who speaks to women on a daily basis with a primary aim of determining how best we can support them came to the realization that close to every discussion included the relationship between hormone issues and digestion, the gut. This posed the question of the chicken or the egg, which comes first, hormonal issues or gut issues. Irrespective of which came first, with decades of experience working with women struggling with their hormones, I can attest that digestion is always impacted. I know this is sometimes so overwhelming because you were never taught this. You were literally never taught anything about your health, other than follow the food guide and get seven to nine hours of sleep and drink some water. But that's why you've joined our conversation today, that is why I'm here, to dive deeper with you so that you may gain a deeper level of understanding for yourself. So today, I'm going to talk you through four different hormones that can be specifically impacted, or areas of hormones in your body, by the gut. This is because your gut microbiota, your microbiome, influences nearly every single hormone in your body including the ones I'm going to focus on today in bite-size form. These are your thyroid hormones, your estrogen, melatonin, and main stress hormone, cortisol. Links and resources mentioned in this episode will be shared in the Online Work with Jenn section of these show notes. Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite: Chicken and the egg Hormones specifically impacted by your gut Impact of low microbiota on thyroid health Your microbiome, a key regulator of estrogen Melatonin - it helps you fall asleep and stay asleep Our relationship to light Cortisol and evaluating your relationship with sugar and starch Dirty Dozen Test, don't guess. Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do! They are your thyroid hormones, your estrogen, melatonin, and main stress hormone, cortisol.” “If you have an imbalanced gut microbiome, your thyroid is definitely going to be impacted by this. And some of the things that you might feel symptom-wise will be things like weight, gain, sensitivity to temperature. Your skin gets drier, your hair gets dryer. Your memory gets impacted, your cognition - that sharpness, that clarity, and that focus in your brain, that really starts to diminish, brain fog and constipation. “ I'm going to say this at the end of every point that I give you today, you want to make your gut health a top priority.” “ If your health is not in its optimal state, then we want to be looking at what are some of those possible triggers of inflammation... like gluten and dairy ...and remove them. It doesn't necessarily mean that as for life, it is for a period of time.” “Your microbiome, it's a key regulator in the levels of circulating estrogen in your body, your microbes in your gut, they actually produce an enzyme that's called beta-glucuronidase and that converts estrogen into its active forms.” “Estrogen is a potent promoter of tissue growth throughout your body.” “Melatonin helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. That melatonin, in order for your body to actually produce a sufficient amount, needs plenty of serotonin. This is the hormone that helps to regulate your mood. And over 90% of your serotonin is actually produced by your bacteria that lives in your gut, not between your ears, not in your brain, which we were taught.” “Our relationship to light is very important to help to regulate all of the various systems and the organs and the hormones in our body.” “Melatonin is one of our primary antioxidants. So it's really important to also help with our immune system.” “In relation to cortisol, you have got to evaluate your relationship with sugar and starches” “Purchase organic wherever possible - if you're on a budget and you need to start somewhere, download the app from the environmental working group, look up the dirty dozen.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Quotes “Having this really hard relationship with food, I really wanted to share how food can be delicious and it can be nourishing and we can find that balance.” “I realized that the old ways of doing things of me just coming home after a long day, and either throwing something together really quickly or, um, you know, just eating takeout all the time, wasn't going to work anymore. I wanted to nourish myself, I wanted to nourish my family” “You need your meals to be satisfying and to balance your blood sugar so that you actually stay full and fueled.” “We have taste buds for a reason. If we're not enjoying our food, then it doesn't matter how healthy the meal is. We're not going to stick to whatever plan we're on if it doesn't actually taste good and it's not delicious' “Fruit is great for a smoothie, delicious and nutrient-dense. But if you put so much in there that. Spiking your blood sugar up to a million and then it's dropping down. You will be hungry really soon after. So having that balance in there, making sure there's some sort of a protein in there.” “Breakfast and lunch are important too. Especially if those are busy times of the day and you're not actually getting balanced meals” “ I think that midday fuel really sets us up for the rest of the day.” “I'll prep a Mason jar salad for lunch, and I'll just layer things in there” “I love having those options on hand that does have a good amount of protein in them to keep you satiated, that are easy to grab and throw together, and don't require a lot of cooking.” “Oftentimes in the afternoon, we might want something sweet because we're feeling a little bit low energy so having something in the fridge that I can grab, that's got a little bit of fat, a little bit of protein, and that tastes delicious.” “Whenever I talk about food, I love talking about the concepts of variety and balance. So we know that variety and balance are really important for nutrition, but they're also really important for satisfaction when it comes to food.” “I always recommend when you are doing your meal planning, especially if you're not used to meal planning, or you're just starting to meal plan, or you're just meal planning for a busier week - to look at your week, to look at your schedule and ask yourself where you need the most support.” “ Front-loading with those foods that make us feel really good because we show up as the best version of ourselves and we're feeling good throughout the day when we're not showing up at our meals super hangry.” “ Allowing that space for flexibility, but also creating that place where you can create that convenience.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, we will be delving even further into our ‘Distilling Our Thoughts' discussion over the past few weeks. This bonus episode is in response to the many questions that my team and I have received since we released our first episode three weeks ago. Today, we will be discussing the hustle, the ambition that we all have to achieve. This is a good thing, don't get me wrong. I am a very ambitious woman. However it is equally important to celebrate what it is that we've achieved, and what we've accomplished to give our bodies, our nervous system the opportunity to pull back, ask ourselves how am I doing? and create that pause. If you haven't yet listened to Part One or Part Two of this topic, please feel free to pause this episode, go listen to Distilling our Thoughts linked here and then join us back on this episode where I will do my very best to answer your questions. Links and resources mentioned in this episode will be shared in the Online Work with Jenn section of these show notes. Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite: Your questions on Distilling Our Thoughts Creating the environment within ourselves to tune in Expectations - our own and others Hustle culture Intentional mindset Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. We're going to drop some of those balls. We're going to break some of them. Some of them need to stay on the ground and not be picked back up. Right. That is a good thing when we do that.” “We have to start gauging - I only have this many hours in a day and this much energy in a day. Then you probably need to schedule 50% of what you normally do so that you have grace, you have the room in order to be able to still show up and to still feel good and not burnt out and polled and resentful and exhausted.” “Sometimes the expectations we put on ourselves, when we stand back we actually recognize this isn't even mine. Like I don't even care about this, but we've taken it because that is the impact around us. So you have got to get clear on those boundaries and by getting clear on your boundaries, you have to first get clear on your priorities. That is where you come back to that tune in.” “How many of you right now, like raising a hand and I'm raising both have achieved the thing, and yet still not felt fulfilled. Right? This is like that, that culture we're in the hustle culture, which has the only way to achieve, right?” “I think so many of us have been taught our worth is attached to productivity and that when we are not being productive, we are lazy… instead of thinking about it being lazy or doing nothing. Think of it as being intentional, right? Intentional about taking care of yourself, attentional or intentional, rather about doing what lights you up.” “it's just about making a decision and it doesn't have to be a massive one. It can be the tiniest one. It could even be listening to this again, and actually just soaking up what I was saying when it comes to the seasons and animals in our life, and nothing being in full bloom all the time.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. This is a conversation with Nicole Jardim. Nicole is what I would call, a period wizard, in terms of helping women repair their periods and get to that stage of having really healthy menstrual cycles. She is a certified women's health coach, a writer, speaker, and mentor. She is the creator of Fixed Your Period. a series of programs that empower women and menstruators to reclaim their health in a really positive way. Her work has impacted the lives of tens of thousands of women all around the world, helping with period problems, PMS, irregular cycles, PCOM, painful, heavy periods, missing periods and so much more. What I really love about Nicole's work is, that rather than just treating problems or the symptoms, she works with women to help to address the root cause of what's really going on physically, mentally, and emotionally. Quotes “You can have a conversation with your practitioner about what is going on because bleeding doesn't happen for no reason. Hemorrhagic menorrhagia does not happen for no reason” “When to my mom’s gynecologist and she said, Oh, I think I'll just put you on the pill. And this should take care of all of it, you know, in one fell swoop. And it actually does do that right away, you start to feel better, your periods lighten up and they're not as heavy, they're less painful and regular. And that's what happened to me. And then I started having all these side effects from being on the pill, which does happen.” “ Finally I went to school to learn this stuff because I thought - if I could help myself, maybe I can help other people too.” “The other thing that is often overlooked is progesterone, estrogen, testosterone. These hormones that are produced because of ovulation are so critical to our overall health.” “This just becomes a ubiquitous part of a woman's health journey. Is she just stumbles from one suppressive form to the next masking it as she goes” “And I fundamentally believe that our bodies were not created in such a way that we would be miserable for one or two weeks, every single cycle, because our menstrual cycles, in my opinion, are not this design flaw.” “I want everyone to know that what you experience shouldn't feel negative and it really shouldn't disrupt your life.” “I find it fascinating that pain in any other part of your body is taken seriously, generally speaking by medical doctors and practitioners. However, period pain, when you have pain in your uterus, that's not taken seriously at all. That's just like, Oh, that's totally normal. So how have we normalized pain as it relates to our menstrual cycle and our uterus.” “Diet is the bedrock. It's the foundation for healthy or unhealthy periods and it's not just our periods. Right. It's really how we feel all month long and particularly how we feel in those one to two weeks before our periods...I think that that's the first and mostly the easiest place that people can start with, just by bringing in more food that is nutrient-dense and is going to support ovarian function.” “Pandemic Periods - I think about the collective stress that we're all experiencing that is basically never happened before” “How do you Nicole, create more simplicity and ease? ...it's really living in tandem with my cycle, in my opinion, it's the best tool that we have to create more of this simplicity and ease in our lives because we all work really hard to do the things that we do.” Learn more about Jenn’s work: Jenn Pike Ignite your Life with Jenn Pike The Hormone Project The Simplicity Project Shop for books, DVDs, programs, and much more! http://www.jennpike.com/ Simplicity TV on Youtube Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, we will be delving further into what we discussed last Thursday on the episode ‘Distilling Our Thoughts’ discussing tune-ins weekly, monthly and quarterly. It is no easy task sometimes to distill down our thoughts, so I hope that this deeper dive into what I do for myself through weekly power pauses and utilizing my journal as a landing page for my thoughts, helps you and can support you on your journey. If you haven’t yet listened to Part One of this topic, please feel free to pause this episode, go listen to Distilling our Thoughts linked here and then join us back on this episode to dive further. Links and resources mentioned in this episode will be shared in the Online Work with Jenn section of these show notes. Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite: Refresh of Distilling Our Thoughts Part One Think of your journal as a landing page for your thoughts Power pause Elimination, take action, delegation, and automation. It's a blank page, pen to paper, and it's where I literally take anything and everything that is occupying space in my head. And in my heart and I just barf it out onto the page, through my pen, and seeing it helps me to not feel it all. And when I can look at it, then what I'm able to do is break it down into four categories - elimination, take action, delegation, and automation.” “Really figure out what can get done because you do not actually have an infinite amount of energy and time. You have a finite amount of energy and time. If we're talking in the literal sense of your minutes and hours and days in a week.” “I can't do everything all at once. And so I will put it in my eliminate for now pile. And if it continues to show up in my brain dump month, over month, and year over year, then that's a passion project. That's no longer just a goal that I have. It's actually something that means a lot to me and I want to bring it to life. And that's pretty much how every single thing I've ever created in my business over the years has happened.” “I call this a power pause for myself. It has helped my brain. And my nervous system so much. And when I start to feel myself kind of sliding back over into my old habits, which for me, it's very easy to take on way more, especially in my follicular and arbitrary phase. It's super easy to say yes to everything and everyone, I come back to these pages that I fill out every weekend.” Learn more about Jenn’s work: Jenn Pike Ignite your Life with Jenn Pike The Hormone Project The Simplicity Project Shop for books, DVDs, programs, and much more! http://www.jennpike.com/ Simplicity TV on Youtube Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Learn more about the products I recommend and some of our amazing partners Skin Essence Organics is Canadian-founded, organic, non-GMO, not animal-tested- this company is one that we love and have around the house. There are certain products from Skin Essence that I used in my skin care that I adores in Question 1 during the episode. Fresh is a product that is like nutrition for your skin as it helps remove the impurities, even makeup, from your skin without hurting it. I pump a dime-sized amount in my hand, add a little water, and then massage all in my skin everywhere, even down my neck. Fresh is antioxidant rich and used to tone and clarify skin, which helps with your breakouts because it helps maintain your skin’s natural pH balance. For a toner I use a mixture of Doterra oils and add Frankincense, helichrysum, lavender, and geranium in a spritz bottle for my face. I roll a little bit of Emortel and Frankincense roller Baum anywhere where I might have any scars from previous breakouts or wrinkles. Finally I apple a light oil from Skin Essence that is called light or soothe or Rose hip. If it’s your first time ordering from Skin Essence, use my code JENNPIKE20 for 20% off. Use code JENNPIKE15 at check out and save 15% off your order for every order after that. Saint Francis Herb Farm provides some of the products for treating Poison Ivy that my son got the other week. I used two different things: 1) Vitamin E cream, which its good to have in any home that has kids or anyone that works with their hands where there is a chance to get scraped or have small cuts; and 2) Rose Hip Oil was added to an Amber bottle where I added eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, and frankincense (5 drops of each oil in a 30 mL bottle of Rose Hip oil. I put this on my son morning and night and it made such a huge difference. Another tip of treating Poison Ivy is ice packs. A couple of velcro ice packs placed in the areas that were really itchy decreased the itching helped a great deal. You can use the code JENNPIKE15 at check out and save 15% off your order. doTERRA oils are used to answer the last question in today’s episode: What do I use to freshen my laundry. First of all, I don’t use fabric softener or Downy sheets was they are carcinogens, respiratory triggers, and skin irritants. They are also loaded with Reno estrogens, which impact your endocrine system. I do use dryer balls made of wool from GoodJuju. Use code JENNPIKE at check out and save 10% off your first order. I combine the dryer balls with deTERRA essential oils. I love lemon, grapefruit, wild orange, or lavender. I pop those in there and it makes the clothes smell fresh. Quotes “what they offered me was. Go back on birth control, lose weight. Take Metformin. I decided I didn't want to do any of that. I was at a healthy weight. I should say that I was not overweight by any means. I did not need to lose weight, but that's one of their kind of blanket, pieces of advice that they'll give. And so I decided to start my own journey of trying to heal this naturally.” “And my periods started to come more often. From 60 days to like 45 days, 35 days. And I was getting them every like 28 to 32 days. It took some time. I'm not saying this happened overnight by any means, but this was over the period of like a year or two. And it was that focus on creating safety in my body physically, as well as mentally, emotionally that made those changes.” “You said that this is how reproduction is actually happening in our body, whether you want to get pregnant or not. And here's what we're not taught as women you obviating and having the ability to conceive is not just about procreation. It is actually a marker of your longevity of health.” “are you just focusing on convenience? With your food or are you actually trying to find the stuff that's most nutrient dense? And sometimes that goes against the grain of like, um, you know, protein shakes for breakfast every day, or like meal replacement, bars and stuff like that. Like, those things have their place, right?…how can we switch that into something that's maybe equally as convenient, but has like a lot more nutrient density.” “…so many women are like, Oh, I don't eat breakfast because I'm just not hungry yet. So I don't eat, but if you don't give your body that consistent fuel, then it's going to go into that fight or flight mode…” Learn more about Jenn’s work: Jenn Pike Ignite your Life with Jenn Pike The Hormone Project The Simplicity Project Shop for books, DVDs, programs, and much more! http://www.jennpike.com/ Simplicity TV on Youtube Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, we will be discussing journaling and weekly tune-ins. It can be really difficult sometimes to distill down our thoughts. To have the focus, to understand some of the more important things that we could be doing for ourselves in order to feel our best and then have the energy, the cognition, and the fortitude to want to move forward towards some of the goals and intentions that we set for ourselves. And so what I created for myself is actually what is referred to as my weekly tune-ins. And I use this as a tool with the women that I mentor inside of the Audacious Woman, which is a year-long mentorship that I started just this past year. In today’s episode, I will take you through weekly tune-ins verbally so please feel free to take a moment to grab some paper and take notes throughout. Links and resources mentioned in this episode will be shared in the Online Work with Jenn section of these show notes. And then what I'll do is I'll take a look at what's happening in my calendar.” “I move my body for me as a woman completely based on my cycle. So I do cycle sinking and that's what. Sanct, my online membership studio is all about, so everything I do, I come back to looking at not my work calendar or my family's calendar, I look at my own body.” “Second thing I do is think about this from my mind. What you focus on expands. So how can you support your mind this week to channel your energy into focus and to clarity and to a priority? ...How can I support, you know, this, this jungle gym between my ears.” “The next thing I tap into is my heart. I asked myself, how am I feeling? How are you feeling?, that you are allowed to feel the things that you're feeling genuinely and wholeheartedly and how you're feeling allows you to express or acknowledge your feelings. “How could you fit more of you into this week? We will delve into how to support yourself via sleep, stress reduction, lifestyle, and environment, as well as nutrition and supplementation. And now there are two ways to test your testosterone. You can do it through your blood work and discover what your serum testosterone is. And then you can also do the Dutch test, I actually recommend both.” “In the blood, we're going to see the amount of testosterone freely circulating. Remember it is like a snapshot. It's like a selfie of what's going on in that moment with the amount of testosterone that you have available. But what the Dutch tell us is that plus how you actually metabolize, how you break this down or attempt to break it down and which pathway it gets moved in your body.” “Making sure you're getting an optimal amount of nutrients into your system, specifically for testosterone - we're looking at things like zinc, methylated B vitamins, magnesium, selenium, making sure your iodine is healthy enough (this is also really important for your thyroid), Iron, Vitamin C and getting enough protein, supporting your cholesterol as well.” “Prioritize your sleep and your stress.” “Disclaimer - The other thing is making sure that you are supplementing intelligently. Now again, I'm giving you general education. I don't know you. In this Simplicity Bite, we will be discussing bowel movements, more specifically constipation. Constipation affects a range of bodily functions due to the interconnected nature of our gut. A lack of daily bowel movements can cause symptoms including inflammation, estrogen dominance, headaches, low energy, and acne. Therefore it is important to induce regular bowel movements as it is a key indicator of our overall health. Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite: What is constipation? At what frequency should we have bowel movements Digestive Reset A key identifying tool of our health (present and past tense) What are you putting into your body? And this is really going to present some different health symptoms if we don't start to get things actually moving.” “If you're eating all the time, right, like you never stop eating, this actually can slow down your migrating motor complex and impact your mobility.” “ When you're under a tremendous amount of stress, this actually shunts both the blood and the hydrochloric acid and the enzymes in your gut away from being able to effectively and efficiently break your food down. This then can lead to things like SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).” “Starting to simply observe what it is that your habits are and then how your body responds can be a really powerful way to potentially heal yourself to change some of the things that are causing some of the problems.” “Take into account some of the things that I've chatted with you about today, maybe it's a great opportunity for you to sit down and create that timeline for yourself and start to connect some of the dots so that you can determine what some of the best suggestions that I gave you are to start with today.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. The emotional, psychological connection between a person, what a person wants to do and what a person is able to do and learning why it's so difficult for someone to bridge that gap, because everyone knows what unhealthy eating looks like in their own life.” “ In my opinion, I think there's too much information. So for the average individual, you don't know how to discern what you actually need or how to then apply it into your life.” “If you can be resilient and stay positive. And just when you slip and fall, just pick yourself back up and go, okay, that happened. And this is why it happened. And it's not the end of the world. And I'm just going to pick myself back up tomorrow. That person is eventually going to succeed, whether it's six months, one year, five years, but managing that mindset is the trick.” “The more reactive you are, the less time you give yourself to assess what's going on, what you're feeling and how you should react. Just asking simple questions.” That is the best opportunity to stop and be curious because what's done is done. There's no point in holding it against yourself. What you need to do is now reflect on that moment, in that situation in a positive way. So you can actually get something out of it in the future. And that's just what I tell people what's done is done. Get something out of it. So what was it, what was the chain of events that led to that consequential behavior?” “Pick little things you can change and manage that give you a feeling of self control, that gives you the psychological reward of - I've identified the problem, I've picked how I'm going to manage it and I'm just baby-stepping. So I just made a little augmentation to my routine and I can do this consistently. And once you can prove to yourself that you can make those little changes for a few weeks. Now, you can make the next change.” “We've had to step into a place of radical resiliency on many levels, right? Like in our, in the economy, in work and finance and our relationships, all of it. I think actually the one area that we really, we could have used the most help in this year, which is the understanding of our health and how to be healthy” “Changing the environment where the behavior usually lives. And if it's on the couch in front of the TV, go for a walk for 20 minutes or do some yoga in another room because just doing that can number one, break up the pattern. And number two, give you the time and space in order to really assess what you're going to do when you return and it doesn't have to be perfect and it doesn't have to change everything, but you'll find when you have those little gaps and those changes in the habit and routine that you're so used to the leads to the same outcome, it gives you the time and space to manage that part of your day differently.” “How your actions affect your mind in the aftermath is going to determine your future habits and behaviors, which over time will determine the outcomes in your health. So it all starts in the mind and how you manage those, those difficult times, because difficult times aren't going to go away.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. It plays massive essential functions in our body, and it's only when things start to go sideways that that's when the chaos actually starts to happen.” “Your cortisol is made by your adrenal glands, which sit on top of the kidneys. You have two adrenal glands and they are supporting your blood sugar regulation. They're supporting your metabolic function. They're helping to reduce inflammation, helping to control your blood pressure. Forming memories, helping with your brain function.” “If you've read my book The Simplicity Project, I talk about this and I always give the same example that your adrenals are your body SWAT team, meaning they don't work 24 seven. They're not on call all the time. They get called in when s*** hits the fan. When it is go time. We need the best of the best.” “When you have really low cortisol or you have symptoms of low cortisol, you might be the person that is feeling like you are tired all the time. Right? This is chronic fatigue.” “Women with high cortisol...They tend to have higher blood sugar, which also contributes to that weight gain around the belly, the insulin resistance. The body has become less sensitive to utilizing and producing an uptaking insulin in the body.” “When we're talking about the adrenals, running a Dutch test would be really beneficial. This can be a useful place to start to properly assess what might be going on. That's something that we do inside The Hormone Project. You can also just book and get on the phone with one of our team members and do a hormone project discovery call.” “The first thing I want you to remember is that cortisol is high or low for a reason. Okay. And so we're trying to identify what is the trigger?” “Sleep has a massive impact on our adrenals and on our nervous system as a whole.” “The other thing, ladies, you need to eat food. You need to stop dieting and stop abusing fasting. Your cortisol levels need balanced blood sugar and adequate micronutrients.” “ Unregulated blood sugar equates to unregulated adrenals.” “Using blue light blockers at night is a really big one so that you can decrease your exposure to blue light. There is a free app you can download onto your devices called FLUX.” “I’ve been using an Aura ring for years now. It tracks things like your sleep and your steps, but more importantly, your heart rate variability and can give you indications about your readiness and how rested you are. And how your body is really doing.” “If you are struggling and you feel more confused than you did before, please do not hesitate to book in a call with one of our team via https://jennpike.com/thehormoneproject” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. And then most people are feeling okay afterward but because of what happens in the gut and it's kind of actually an acute case of auto-immunity, where your immune system in the process of attacking whatever pathogen has come in accidentally attacks the nerve cells in your migrating motor complex, which is the heart of all of SIBO.” “It really just depends on you. There is a very diverse toolkit and lots of options, and unfortunately, some people do need all of those options in order to kind of hone in on the one that resonates or on the combination of things that resonates because the bacteria in your gut are incredibly diverse.” “IBS is the most prevalent gastrointestinal diagnosis in the world” “Where people kind of get too bogged down in thinking that CBO is kind of a disease and how do I get rid of CBO? When in reality you should be asking the questions of why did I get CBO? What it is and what it isn't.” “There had to be a vulnerability and a catalyst. And then you bring those two together and now here we are, or all your vulnerabilities just eventually added up right over time.” “The hallmark would be the consistency. So, you know, kind of feeling that way and the bloat every time you eat, waking up with a flat stomach, but as soon as you eat breakfast, that changes” “Primary test is something called a breath test.” “Start to pay attention, you will know. It's trying to find this homeostasis and maintaining a level that helps to maintain steady energy levels.” “First of all the immediate benefits. Number one, you are going to notice a decrease in your cravings. When your blood sugar is stable and balanced, you're going to notice an increase in your energy. You are going to have a steadier mood, a more restful sleep way, less brain fog. You're going to feel a whole lot sharper. So you're going to feel clear in your mind. Your skin is also going to feel and look more clear. You will have less weight gain, less inflammation, overall, a much stronger stable immune system and balanced hormones and a healthier gut will be a far more realistic intention to create for yourself and goal to achieve.” “The long-term benefits are you are working towards preventing heart disease, preventing insulin resistance and type two diabetes preventing type three diabetes, which is dementia, which also reduces your risks of Alzheimer's and reducing your cancer risks.” “The relationship between your, your blood sugar levels and your sleep they're cyclical, you have unstable blood sugar. It's going to make it that much more difficult to not only fall asleep but stay asleep. And when you don't get enough sleep, your body becomes less effective at regulating your blood sugar. Meaning that you're going to have higher levels than normal. And go back into that rollercoaster effect.” “Brain fog... You just feel like you're in a fishbowl, right. It's kinda cloudy... Studies have shown and proven the link between dysregulated blood sugar and glucose levels and impaired brain function.” “Managing insulin levels helps...to support clear skin and weight. So when you have elevated insulin levels, it actually increases the activity of your acne-inducing hormones and those pesky cravings. So having a diet or nutritional lifestyle that is focusing on foods that are higher in fiber, lower glycemically, lower in sugar.” “Now, when we talk about things like your gut health and how this is impacted, there's a massive interplay between your microbiome and your gut, and your metabolic health. So your diet, it is impacting the composition literally of your microbiome, which is that ecosystem in your gut. And that in turn is impacting your insulin production. So we have this ability in our body. If everything is running as smoothly as supposed to be, the gut is nice and strong.” “We really want to work at making sure that those of you who have dysregulated blood sugar, who maybe have type two diabetes right now are helping to control your blood sugar and support those glucose levels so that we can decrease your risk of any other issues happening.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Quotes “This is often a misdiagnosed issue going on for so many people and called things like chronic fatigue, or you just have a weak immune system and it's just brain fog. It's just this. And just that. And really it is this combination, this grouping of symptoms that can oftentimes be pushed off as something else.” “Part of what had you dig deeper and be like, there has got to be another reason or not necessarily a reason, but there has to be another way to, to help our bodies move through this and to get stronger. We can't just continue to feel this way.” “I was able to figure out there's a propensity for high intracranial pressure and we needed to bring the pressure down and when we brought the pressure down that was a great help for symptoms but it was still not hitting the underlying problem, but we couldn't ignore it. So I went ahead and released that in a book, The Driscoll Theory, it went worldwide. It was awesome because it changed lives immediately. But we still weren't done.” “My son, he is a poster child for recovery. This is my greatest victory in life. It really is to get answers for him and to see him doing so well.” “Diana, I believe we all have a divine purpose. This definitely is yours because there's not a lot of people who would be able,12 years down the line, still wake up with that same, not just curiosity, ...but a calm nature..., as well as a certain level of ferrosity” “We just have to keep at it and keep looking for the answers.” “That is crazy hard and crazy that patients have to be the ones to lead the charge. I think it won't always be that hard. Better labels, we’ll know more about genetics and we'll be able to identify these things much earlier with the validation the patient needs and that objectivity that they don't have to fight for the help that they need.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Welcome back for another bite of Simplicity. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. In this simplicity bite, we will be discussing Adult Acne. We will talk through different causes of acne in adulthood, the purpose of our pores, and the direct correlation between skin issues and imbalances in our nutrition, gut health, and hormones. I will also walk you through the three phases of detoxification relating to gut and liver function, nutritional intake, and breakdown. Given the current reality we are all facing, masks are a big part of our lives so I will be sharing some tips with you on how to take care of your skin in and out of the home. I want to preface that we are all different and so it is important when listening to this episode, to take from it what connects with you, what resonates. If you have a question, send it on over to hello@jennpike.com or via Instagram at @jennpike and I'll do my best to share my insights, thoughts, and advice. Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite: Different possible causes of adult acne Just how common acne is in adulthood We have pores for a reason Call back to our skincare episodes with Skin Essence founder, David Brooke Lifestyle irritants Direct correlation of skin issues with imbalances in nutrition, gut health, and hormones Three different phases of detoxification Stress breakouts and impact of your mental health on your physical health The importance of good hygiene and a cleansing routine Taking care of your skin before, during, and after wearing a mask Inflammatory foods and leaky gut Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do! You can connect to this episode on iTunes, Spotify, or Stitcher by searching The Simplicity Sessions, or visiting www.jennpike.com/podcast. Join our Free Facebook Group called The Simplicity Sessions Community. Quotes: “Acne is something that I think so many of us believe only happens when we are in puberty, but it can happen as an adult” “To preface this episode by saying that every body is different. So as I say, time and time again, I don't know you, your history, your current status, what's going on. So I want you to be able to sit back and take this through a big lens and pull from it what connects with you, and then some of the pieces that don't resonate, then that message is just not for you.” “What we do have to remember is that we have pores for a reason, right? We have endo and exogenous organs and systems for a reason. Meaning we are meant to draw things in, absorb and bring them into our body. And we are equally meant to be pushing and releasing things out.” “Hormones can definitely cause skin issues to flare, but they all begin within the gut.” “Stress increases certain stress hormones in the body, particularly the production of cortisol, which can definitely cause you to have stress breakouts. “Remember your body has to be able to filter...I've seen a huge increase in dealing with acne all around the area of wearing a mask” “The final thing that I would say is Don't try to navigate this by yourself. If you're really struggling when it comes to your skin, work with somebody on this, reach out to us. You can book a call with one of our team members and talk about what you've been struggling with. We will be very honest with you and let you know if myself or one of our coaches inside the Hormone Project are a good fit. And if not, we will refer you.” Online work with Jenn: Register for my signature program The Hormone Project and work with me 1:1 to support your health, hormones, and more via the following link www.jennpike.com/thehormoneproject. Quotes “What did we inherently know from nature then that we have lost touch with now? And how has that affected us? How has it affected our bodies? How has it affected us socially? How's it affected us spiritually. And when we start to look at coming home to ourselves, a healing, the starting point with that often is figuring out how we can become more in touch with nature. “Coming home to ourselves and learning how to reconnect with nature and how she can nourish us.” “How afraid people are to really listen to themselves. Because if they start listening, they might have to change... And if this last year has taught us anything, it has forced us into situations where we don't have a choice anymore. We actually have to start listening. So maybe that's the silver lining of the whole situation is that we're learning to listen “Learning to nourish the body with what nature would naturally be giving us in every season...what's going on in our body. What imbalances are going on, but also what does nature have for us in this moment.” “I know if I don't teach you the why behind the what. And I don't help you understand all the connections, you are going to end up in the next X amount of time, down the same rabbit hole and repeating the same pattern.” “You can be better right now for a short period of time, or we could take a little bit more time and go on a journey together and teach you. And now you can have lifetime knowledge that anytime something happens, you now know how to best support yourself. “We do kind of a breaking down of what their current lifestyle is, and then spend the rest of the time building back up...Now you have the knowledge to start to explore that area and there's the empowerment piece.” “I believe if we can connect people and empower them with this type of information, it's going to change, not just their lives, but it's going to change how they interact, you know, with what their buying power is with their social presence.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years.
