In this episode we explore the inspiring concept of Critical Hope with Tara Mahoney. Co-authored with Kari Grain, their article “Not All Hope is Created Equal: Climate Action Research as a Source of Critical Hope” is a rich resource for how to find your way when dealing with complexity in climate work and action research. Joe and Blane first introduce Tara and begin by asking her to define critical hope, and how it departs from optimism, including a walkthrough of the seven principles Kari Grain developed in her previous work [2:26]. The conversation then turns to the role of emotion in climate action research, and specifically the role of community in processing anger and grief [08:12]. How does critical hope then translate when working in a research context, which typically asks researchers to be emotionally removed? Tara shares how the Community Engaged Research Initiative grapples with balancing emotional and logical lenses within a research project [12:52]. These kinds of collaborations take time, and Tara reflects on the importance of trust and true relationship building [20:22]. Joe then probes how different research paradigms, like Two-Eyed Seeing, can be used in these more critical and participatory engaged research processes, especially in contexts collaborators may hold completely opposite worldviews [21:55]. Tara then describes the case of the Climate Disaster Project, which illustrates how media can be a powerful tool for bridging some of these worldviews and opening up dialogue. Running through the conversation is the positioning of researchers as community organizers. To conclude, Tara reflects on the example of co-creating the Climate Resilience Roadmap in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside [32:27] and wonderful outcomes of leading with practical community needs, instead of theory [37:06]. Closing off the episode, critical hope is shared as an undercurrent and practice for individuals and communities facing some of our most complex societal ailments.

Dean has spent over 30 years perfecting his approach to whitetail communication using 100% pure scent — and in this masterclass, he shares how hunters can use scent not as a gimmick, but as a tool for understanding and influencing deer behavior. We cover: Mock scrapes, drag rags, and the concept of the "virtual deer" Why buck urine is underrated early in the season Dean's scent layering strategy through all phases of the rut How scent helps you “talk” to deer using their own instincts And how the industry has changed since this episode first aired — including CWD laws, synthetic scents, and ATA/RHA certification Dean's methods are still converting skeptical hunters to this day — and his passion for woodsmanship through scent makes this one of the most timeless episodes in our archive.

Today's podcast: The passing of Rex Murphy. Guest: Catherine Swift. Multi-decade friend and president of Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses of Canada. Also member of our Beauties and the Beast panel. And: Callers, reflecting on what made Rex special.   Selina Robinson was until recently a senior cabinet minister in the British Columbia provincial NDP government of David Eby. Then her comment on a B'nai Brith organized panel show that before Israel became a state its territory was just "a crappy piece of land with nothing on it," where several hundred thousand people lived, but it didn't produce anything and didn't have an economy. The backlash to MLA Robinson's statement caused her eventual and bitter resignation from cabinet and the NDP party as she claimed antisemitism exists among NDP caucus members. Now MLA Robinson accuses premier Eby of "gaslighting" the Jewish community with empty promises to do something about antisemitism (per Vaughn Palmer in Vancouver Sun). Guest: Selena Robinson. Independent MLA, British Columbia.   Canada's system of MAID (Medical assistance in dying) is under increased international and national scrutiny and criticism. In 2021, more than 10,000 people chose to die with physician administered drugs. The question of whether mental illness is a sole qualifier for MAID was addressed in parliament, reminding that in 2015 the Supreme Court ruled adults with "a grievous and irremedial medical condition" were eligible for assisted death. Now there is growing fear people under economic strain are accessing MAID.  In 2021, more than 10,000 people accessed MAID in Canada, while at the same time the numbers of doctors engaging in providing medical assistance in dying is dropping. Meanwhile a leading United States medical ethicist is calling for MAID to immediately be adopted in the State of New York.  Guest: Dr. Arthur Caplan. Mitty Professor of Bioethics. NYU Grossman School of Medicine.  Author: Smart Mice, Not so smart People.   Split headline: Canada's divorce rate is at its lowest in 50 years. However, Fewer people are entering marriage. This according to a report from the Vanier Institute of the Family. What gives? Hold on though! There's another consideration. What is happening to couples who live together in common-law relationships, but choose not to marry? Jean Vanier changed Richard and Hazel's lives. He founded the L'Arche movement – a global network inspired by Christian teaching – where people with and without learning disabilities live together in community. During his life, Vanier was hailed as “a living saint” and “a prophet”. But shortly after his death, a deep and disturbing secret emerged – that Vanier founded L'Arche to hide a mystical sex sect, coercing and abusing at least 25 women, all without disabilities. Richard and Hazel were stunned when they discovered the truth. Now they and 150 L'Arche communities are coming to terms with what has happened.

Jean Vanier was the founder of L'Arche, a network of intentional communities where people with and without disabilities live alongside one another in mutual friendship. While he was considered a “living saint” up until his death in 2019, allegations that he had sexually abused six adult, nondisabled women sent shockwaves throughout the L'Arche Community. And more recently, a nearly 900-page report was released last Monday shed more light on the scope of the abuse. Jenna Barnett has been following this story since it broke. She is the host of the new podcast “Lead Us Not” from Sojourners. We talk to Jenna about Vanier and how L'Arche is responding, as well as larger questions about how we hold in tension the good works created by deeply flawed, charismatic founders. During Signs of the Times, we talk about the developing situation between the church and the government in Nicaragua, where four priests were sentenced to 10 years in prison, as well as Notre Dame's new food delivery robots. (After we recorded, news broke that the four priests were part of a group of 222 political prisoners who were deported from Nicaragua and will take refuge in the United States.)
