Passive house has become synonymous with the rapidly arriving new normal for our homes and buildings and offers layers of positive outcomes. Thermal comfort, IAQ/IEQ, durability, and low energy use are typically the incentives for owners, architects, builders and trades. As it turns out, there may be broader societal benefits tied to thoughtfully managing heat flows in and out of a building as well. Good ol' thermodynamics isn't getting the flashy attention of solar PV, wind turbines and batteries, but the demand side may well be where we win this fight to protect ourselves and our planet from the worst, most devastating impacts of the climate crisis.Join Kristof in this wide-ranging conversation with Lisa White, the Co-Executive Director of Phius, where they unpack the positive ripple-out impacts that passive buildings have on our energy grids, and our decarbonization efforts. Seen holistically, buildings are a powerful enabling technology for the ongoing energy transition away from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy. Starting with a perspective on the current state of the grid and its ongoing evolution, the conversation here positions passive buildings in relation to the decline of the fossil fuel era and the dominance of renewables.Lisa WhiteLisa White is the Co-Director and a technical lead for Phius. Ms. White has been with Phius since 2012. She led the building certification review team for seven years and is an instructor for Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC®) training and WUFI® Passive energy modeling software training. She holds a degree in Environmental Sustainability with a minor in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Master's in Energy Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago.Ms. White has a strong understanding of high-performance building design and how this is integral to the transition to a renewable energy grid. Her Masters' thesis posed the question “What do Net Zero Buildings Cost the Grid?”, combining the concepts behind how building loads are shaped, how design techniques can alter that shape, and how that ultimately impacts the electricity generation resources needed to meet the load – all while considering the shift to more intermittent, renewable energy resources. Ultimately, this research concludes that energy conservation and demand response in buildings is a critical up-front investment to facilitate this transition. At Phius, White works on the development of new and existing professional training courses and has delivered professional training to more than 800 students. She has taught introductory and advanced seminars at professional conferences and universities nationwide, including guest lecturing at the Harvard Extension School. She is a longtime member of Phius' technical committee and was instrumental in the development of the Phius+ 2015 Climate-Specific Passive Building standard, followed by the 2018 and 2021 updates. Alongside standards development and research, White works directly with the Fraunhofer Institute of Building Physics to develop and implement new key features into the WUFI Passive energy modeling software that Phius uses for passive building certification. While in her previous role as Certification Manager, Ms. White reviewed and provided feedback on energy models, drawings, details, planned mechanical systems, etc. to more than 500 project teams working on passive building designs across the world.Ms. White has written and co-authored many publications, the most recent being a cover-featured article in the ASHRAE High Performing Buildings magazine. She has presented at numerous national and international conferences on topics related to grid-friendly buildings, assessing resiliency and passive survivability, measured data for high performance and net zero buildings.TeamHosted by Kristof IrwinEdited by Nico MignardiProduced by M. The teaching of reading is something that is relevant to all our learners including those with severe and complex learning difficulties but the questions is… Where does phonics fit in? Why should we include this within our reading framework and what will it look like? How will learners with the most significant complex needs gain from an inclusive reading curriculum? These are all questions that Dr Sarah Moseley addresses in today's podcast ‘Teaching Phonics to ALL learners - what about SLD and PMLD pupils?'. Sarah is an Educational Consultant and joins Dale to talk about the process of learning to read and the importance of including accessible, meaningful, and engaging phonics instruction in this. Recent publications by the DfE and Ofsted have placed a renewed focus on the teaching of reading for all learners, which includes the teaching of phonics. This has caused much discussion and some concern amongst special schools. There is a lack of support in terms of professional development and how to ensure that the teaching of phonics is relevant, accessible, and engaging for all learners. We discuss: how to ensure approaches are accessible to all the importance of barriers to learning how to make phonics relevant and meaningful for older learners why engagement is the key to understanding how understanding of the alphabetic principle is the key to learning to read Listen to strategies for working with learners with diverse learning needs, including pre/nonverbal learners and those with more complex Special Educational Needs. Ensure everyone has the opportunity to unlock the door and enter the incredible world of literacy. The first sentence of this podcast will probably resonate with many people. Shona Minson courageously talks about the impact upon her health and wellbeing of working intimately with traumatised children and mothers. It is a very honest conversation and we are grateful to Shona for sharing her reflections with us. Shona is currently a British Academy Post Doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Criminology. Since March 2020 she has been researching the impact of COVID-19 prison lockdowns on children who have a parent in prison. She has provided training to judiciary on the sentencing of mothers and primary carers in England and Wales, Northern Ireland and New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. In 2018 she released the film series 'Safeguarding Children when Sentencing Mothers' for sentencers, advocates, probation staff and women facing sentence in England and Wales. She has more recently been involved in a similar series for criminal justice professionals in Scotland, which was released in April 2021. After graduating from St.Anne's College, Oxford in Jurisprudence Shona was called to the Bar of England and Wales and practised criminal and family law from 1 King's Bench Walk, London. Her professional experience led to her research interest in the points of intersection between family and criminal law. She obtained an MSc (Distinction) from the University of Surrey in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Social Research in 2012. Her Masters research explored the impact of motherhood as mitigation in criminal sentencing using interviews with members of the judiciary and an analysis of sentencing transcripts. Shona then moved to the Centre for Criminology at the University of Oxford and funded by the ESRC she undertook DPhil research which analysed the place of children in maternal sentencing decisions in England and Wales. She explored the status of children of prisoners in English law and engaged directly with children and their carers to explore the nature of the impact of maternal imprisonment. She also interviewed members of the Crown Court judiciary to examine sentencing practice. In 2017/ 2018 Shona was employed by the Faculty of Law as the Research Officer on an ESRC Impact Acceleration Award funded project in association with the Prison Reform Trust and Dr Rachel Condry. ' Addressing the Impact of Maternal Imprisonment: Developing Collaborative Training' . It built on the findings of her doctoral work and provide information, in the form of films, to sentencers and legal professionals to aid consistency and understanding in maternal sentencing decisions. The films were launched in January 2018 and are available for sentencers, advocates and probation staff. An additional film was made for women themselves facing sentence and it can be viewed here. Shona shared her research findings with the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights in March 2018, in particular with regard to the state duty to protect children from discrimination which they may face as a consequence of the status or activities of their parents (UNCRC, Article 2). As a consequence the JCHR held an enquiry into the right to family life of children whose mother is imprisoned. Reading is high on the educational agenda due to the impact that it can have upon the mental well-being and academic success of children and young people. Recent documents have placed a renewed focus on the teaching of reading for all learners, this includes those with the most complex needs. The issue for professionals is that there is a lack of clarity about what this means for these learners, in particular those learners attending special schools and specialist facilities. This has led to confusion for all involved. Dr Sarah Moseley, Educational Consultant, joins Dale for this week's podcast ‘Creating an inclusive reading curriculum for all learners'. Sarah discusses the why, what and how of teaching reading to all learners and provides ideas and strategies to create an inclusive reading curriculum framework. Listen to find out how we learn to read and the foundation skills involved that support learners to develop an understanding of the world around us. Understanding the importance of literacy rich environments and experiences will enhance the learning opportunities for everyone. Her gifts of interpreting prophetic events increased even more after reading the Book of Revelation and Hal Lindsey's Great Late Planet Earth at age 13. From there she continued writing speeches for college involving Biblical and Scientific issues affecting this generation. Her Masters thesis was entitled, "Light: A Theory Of Alpha And Omega - From The Beginning Until The End." Joye continued her research and received accolades from her Curriculum Professor during her doctoral studies for her final paper, "A Theory of Alpha And Omega - From Beginning Until The End."DR. JOYE'S RESEARCH...Dr. Pugh's dissertation, "A Program to Decrease Obesity in the Mentally Retarded Adult Population" was a major applied research project encompassing 18 months of training and data collection which allowed her to scientifically prove her theory that mentally retarded adults could achieve the same physical level as that found within the normal population. The subjects, some both mentally and physically handicapped within the clinical trial she developed, all achieved and were presented Presidential Sports Fitness Awards; something no other mentally retarded group had ever achieved. Many of her adult subjects went on to compete in athletic events against non-handicapped individuals thus proving mentally retarded individuals do not have to remain on the sidelines of life but can successfully engage in strenuous and advanced levels of competitive sports without adverse effects. Dr. Pugh is keenly interested in how the spirit within human beings allows subjects with limited mental and physical capabilities to transcend established expectation. Her theories prove that if the normal population could somehow transcend expectation then there would be no limit to capability; as capability is harnessed by what one believes one can achieve. Most importantly, for over 40 years, now, Dr. Pugh has been involved in researching Biblical prophecy. Joye consults with people from around the world on various issues and current events involving science and religion. She also serves as a consultant in education with MUFON regarding the spiritual and religious aspects of paranormal and UFO experiences.https://www.drjoye.com/
I welcome Dr. Sarah Pospos to the show to discuss her interesting career path in the world of psychiatry, specifically telepsychiatry. Dr. Sarah is a devoted B.rad listener, and in this show, you'll learn about her highly integrative approach to psychiatry—as you'll hear, I had to push and prod her to even talk about prescription medication! She is a strong supporter of incorporating exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress management, time management and breathing exercises and yoga in order to handle the very common, prevailing mental health struggles that have escalated in recent years, especially in the age of quarantine and the accordant lifestyle disruptions (such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, etc). The immediate successful interventions that can concur with something like a simple breathing exercise or a quick workout will be great takeaways from this show; in fact she cites research that proves a single workout can alleviate the acute symptoms of anxiety! You'll also hear about imposter syndrome: why it's become so prevalent and how to combat it without becoming overly arrogant, egoistical, and narcissistic, and learn a lot about how to achieve balance in both your brain and in your life. Dr. Sarah Pospos is a sports and perinatal psychiatrist and former student athlete. Her Masters in Psychopharmacology and Applied Psychology allow her to add even more insights on all things medication and human behavior—she has published quite a bit on work burnout, anxiety and depression at UCLA, UCSD, Harbor-UCLA and UCSB. Dr. Sarah is devoted to helping working professionals feel their best again, especially when dealing with anxiety, depression or other psychiatric challenges associated with work stress, intense workload, deadlines, no work-life balance and others. She incorporates exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress management, effective time management (especially as a full-time psychiatrist and new mom of 2 under 2), and other sustainable lifestyle changes. TIMESTAMPS: Dr. Pospos is a psychiatrist who believes exercise, nutrition, and sleep and such are preferable to medication for handling life's struggles. Welcome to the second episode of The Ocean Embassy. Today I am interviewing someone super cool. Melissa Cristina Marquez is a wildlife scientist, science communicator, author, TV presenter and a lot more. We talk about her research on ocean predators' habitat development, the way in which she relies on marine technology in this work and why science communication and social media is vital for her future work. We also address the systemic issues Melissa has faced throughout her career such as sexism. Melissa has a Puerto Rican-Mexican background and holds a Bachelor degree in Marine Ecology and Conservation from the New College of Florida. Her Masters degree took her to the other side of the globe: she studied Marine Biology at the Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, and then moved to Perth, Australia to start her PhD research at Curtin University. Her research focuses on understanding what oceanographic processes influence the composition, distribution, and habitat use of Chondrichthyans in the Western Indian Ocean as well as local people's perceptions about sharks. She is a member of the board for Women in Ocean Science, coordinates the Mentorship program at Minorities in Shark Sciences, regularly writes for Forbes and advises organizations on their science strategies. I wanted to interview Melissa because she is a pro at communicating science and research about the wildlife in our oceans that gets very little talked about in public. It amazes me how important also research such as hers is in order to place small details of one animal's habitat into broader context of climate change. Cover art: Simon + Anna Madlener. In tandem she raises awareness of the societal unconscious bias that marginalises, isolates and strips women of their self-worth and role within society. She integrates her coaching experience, and her ten years of teaching yoga, to create a coaching program to help women transform how they view themselves from the inside out, and re-envision their lives with a renewed sense of purpose. “As a childless women, I am passionate about helping women to realise how much worth and potential they hold within themselves, and how they have a valuable role in society”. Sophia Andeh is a coach and founder of Butterfly and Beyond. She has coached team members in the pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years, and now has a special interest in coaching to help childless women create a fulfilling life without children. Her Masters research exploring the experience of coaching in childless women received an award from the European Mentoring and Coaching Council, UK, for the dissertation with the highest potential for societal benefit. Lou Walker Lou is a health coach. She helps clients change those sticky habits that get in the way of health and living life to the fullest. She has a particular interest in the benefits of eating ‘real food', weight management, and workplace health and wellbeing. As well as working one-to-one with individual clients, she works within organisations, coaching people, running workshops and helping employers make it as easy as possible for people to be healthy at work. For 16 years Lou was a leadership development consultant, specialising in behavioural diagnostics and personal development. But a longstanding interest in the relationship between health and performance led her to a Masters degree in Obesity & Weight Management and a postgraduate certificate in Human Nutrition, and then a career change towards health coaching. Her Masters research was the first academic study into workplace cake culture. Its findings have implications for workplace health and Lou is campaigning to help organisations rethink workplace snacking and food-based reward culture to reduce workplace sugar consumption.Outside of work she is an athletics coach and sports massage therapist, an ambassador for the UK Public Health Collaboration and on the Steering Group for the Real Food Campaign. In this episode, athlete and researcher, Lou Walker started her low carb journey to find out what was the optimal for her Ironman performances. Lou didn't have any ailments and wasn't over weight but she edged her family towards low carb by cutting out potatoes, rice and pasta. She then signed up for The Real Meal Revolution and went fully keto.Lou recognises that stress and boredom make her want to eat carby foods but she doesn't give in to the urges.Lou has swam in open water and accessed the fat on her body to keep her energy going. This helped her not have to take in nutrition whilst she was swimming.Bread is a treat for Lou on Christmas Day and her birthday.Lou did a Masters in obesity and weight management. Her original research was on cake in office culture. She interviewed 1000 UK office workers to understand what office cake looks like. Nikoleta was so open about having eating disorders, both anorexia, and bulimia. Her blog features the underdog as she has a passion for helping others. She's a freelance writer, does PR and covered 2019 Oscars. Her Masters was completed in Chicago, by route of Bulgaria, Sweden, and Africa prior. She's learned how to recognize toxic environments and remove herself from them and fights against body-shaming and helps others with eating disorders. IN HER WORDS: I came to the US at 15 alone to pursue the American Dream. I am 34 now and a single parent with a 9-year-old daughter. I went through a divorce, abuse, trauma, several heartbreaks, losses, immigration, depression, anorexia, bulimia, body shaming and I am a fighter, an ironwoman, as my father and an ex liked to call me and still standing! I am still going through heartbreak as my last boyfriend of 5 years left me to pursue fun and other women. I met him during my divorce. I love entertainment. I am an entertainment journalist, a publicist, and editor and I have interviewed a lot of celebrities and covered the 2019 Oscars. I want to empower women who have been abused, left, oppressed and be their voice for change. I have seen my mother oppressed growing up and still do, I have been through it with my father, men I dated, men in business and I worked with. As women, we have to always fight against being oppressed and objectified by men and that has been my life's fight and the one I got most wounds in. Host Nancy Kahn is joined by Dr. Barbara Morrill who presents Part II of our series on the life of Etty Hillesum. Etty was a young Dutch Jewish woman of twenty-seven, who found an inner path to liberation, and ‘union with the ground of her being' in the face of the horror of her times, the Nazi genocide sweeping across Europe, which ultimately engulfed Etty and her family in late 1943. The life of Etty Hillesum moved from chaotic family dysfunction, to the healing of her own inner distress, depression, mood swings and somatic complaints, toward a vast inner life of spaciousness and presence, even with the awareness of the Nazi horrors that awaited European Jewry. Her mode of resistance was journal writing, and contributing to others, and as Denise de Costa says, ‘It was with her pen, rather than with her sword that she battled to save humanity.' (de Costa, 1998). Dr. Morrill explores aspects of Etty Hillesum's process of transcending the hate of her time, by “reposing in herself” which may be seen as a model for engaging the seemingly ubiquitous rise of nationalism, neo-facism or neoliberalism throughout much of Europe and the United States in our time, and in a broader sense, the tension that exists between democratic and fascist principles, or open and closed systems in all times. Listen live on Sunday, 11/17, at 7 pm on KPFA Radio (94.1 FM Berkeley and beyond) or visit the archives at kpfa.org/program/talk-it-out-radio or iTunes. Barbara Morrill, PhD, is core faculty and former chair of the Integral Counseling Psychology Program at The California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. She is a Clinical Psychologist licensed in CA, and has been in private practice in Palo Alto for 28 years. Barbara has spent much of her life exploring women's social, psychological, and spiritual development, with an emphasis on intergenerational trauma. Her doctoral dissertation was entitled: Quest for Wholeness; The Individuation Process of Seven African American Women. Barbara's study of Etty Hillesum began in 2000, culminating with a presentation at the 2008 International Transpersonal Congress, New Delhi, India, entitled Being in the Face of Annihilation: Transformation Through Writing as Inquiry in the lives of two Dutch Women During the Holocaust: Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) and Jetteke Frijda (1925-present). Her continued study has been about the Evolution of Consciousness as well as a spiritual practitioner with The Diamond Approach with A.H. Almaas and Karen Johnson for 14 years. She presented on Unfolding Toward Being; Etty Hillesum and the Evolution of Consciousness in January, 2014 at the Second International Congress of the Etty Hillesum Research Center at Ghent University in Belgium. This was published in the on-line Journal, Integral Review in 2015. Barbara presented at the Third International Congress in September, 2018 in Middelburg, Holland: The Contours of These Times; Etty Hillesum as Chronicler of Love Transcending Hate in Her Times, for Our Time, For All Time. This article will be published in a book entitled: The Lasting Significance of Etty Hillesum's Writings in November 2019 published by the Amsterdam University Press. Her Masters work was done at Boston College and Doctoral work at the former Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, now Sofia University. Dr. Morrill shares her personal journey to Amsterdam to walk in Etty's footsteps and the outline of Etty's short life. Part-one covers the evolution of Etty's development as seen through her writings and letters as she learned to love, reflected on her struggles to meet her needs, focused on her own healing, and faced her imminent death during the Holocaust. "Starve Your Fear By Feeding Your Faith" Heather Thomson 1. Heather mentioned that she “starves her fears by feeding her faith” and it is not that we will never feel fear, but what does it take so that we can do “it” afraid. I often reflect on what it takes to FEAR – Face Everything And Rise instead of FEAR – Forget Everything And Run. Is there something you have been putting off for the fear that is will not go as planned, go perfectly or perhaps even go better than you could imagine? – as that brings up a whole other level of fear. Think about one step you could take to help move you closer to being able to feel your fear and do it anyway. 2. Heather shared her thoughts on the adversity advantage and I do believe that it is not what happened to us that is the story – but how we react to what happens to us that will enable us to soar and shine. We all have things in our life that we wish had gone differently. Take a moment to reflect back lightly on a challenging time. Did it make you better or bitter? Do you view yourself as a victim or victorious? It is not always easy to see the good, and there is nothing wrong in taking the time to grieve and heal – and then it is important to release the negatives of your past so that you can cement and build your positive future. 3. A Masters In Heart & Hustle. Heather shared her unconventional backstory to success. Her Masters came from working in the fashion world instead of being in school. She talked about getting a foot in the door and the importance of constantly being open to learning. I often talk with people who feel that they don’t have “enough” credentials behind them to go for their dreams, and this is something I struggled with for many years. If you knew that you only needed to know a little more information than the people you want to inspire and motivate – would you already be out in the world sharing your message? 4. Heather is a big advocate of mentorship and talked about the importance of helping others rise as we travel our own path to success. Is there someone that you could reach out to mentor under? Someone who is already doing what it is you are wanting to do? Can you trade your time their information? Now look back and is there someone you could mentor? Someone who could help you with their time in trade for you sharing your tips and strategies for success? 5. Heather talked about the importance of knowing our light and being able to shine brightly and also how it sometimes will serve the work we are doing to allow those around you to take center stage. Technology is reducing our ability to being able to read a room and recognize what it needs. Emotional Intelligence is defined as the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. – EQ or emotional intelligence is just like a muscle, you have to use it or you lose it. Unfortunately, as we are all behind our screens so much it is something we can all use to cultivate and strengthen. Notice the next time you walk into a meeting, a party or just meet someone for the first time. Can you listen more than you talk and can you bring into the room what it is that people are hoping to find?
