Ash and Cam talk about the Fall River satanic cult murders! Jeepers Creepers!Young sex workers started turning up brutally murdered in the Fall of 1979 in Fall River, Massachusetts. All signs initially pointed to a 26 year old pimp named Carl Drew, who was also the alleged ring leader or a local devil-worshipping gang of pimps and sex workers. Seventeen year old sex worker Robin Murphy's testimony put Drew behind bars for the rest of his life...But was this a case of a satanic cult, with a cunning leader, at work? Or a story of small town jealousy and gossip, mixed with a smidge of satanic panic, that lead to a series of tragic murders?Like what you're hearing? This week’s episode involves a twisted web of convictions (perhaps wrongful), acquittals (also possibly wrongful), the murder of a young woman and the disappearance and probable murder of a second young woman – all wrapped around two potentially really bad guys and one no-doubt-about-it nasty scumbag.  The story unfolds in tony Putnam County, an affluent New York City suburb north of Manhattan in southern upstate New York, where in October 1994 12 year-old Josette Wright disappeared.  Just over 13 months later, Josette’s remains were discovered.  Two young men – Anthony DiPippo and Andrew Krivak – were charged and, in 1997, convicted of Josette’s murder – in separate trials.  DiPippo has always maintained his innocence. Krivak confessed.  Seems simple.  Except…well, a couple of things.  It turns out that Krivak has claimed, almost from the moment he accepted his sentence, that his confession was coerced, and there’s evidence to indicate the investigator who questioned Krivak used tactics that may have led to a false confession.  And Anthony DiPippo?  Well.  He has been granted three separate trials – convicted the first two times and finally acquitted in the third.  So how can two men convicted of the same crime have been dealt such different outcomes?  It all revolves around our certified scumbag in this matter – one Howard Gombert, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence for the sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl in Connecticut in 2000 – and who is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of 17 year-old Robin Murphy in April of 1995.  Women’s underwear with Robin’s DNA on it was found in a trunk of what can only be described as “trophies” in the home of Gombert’s girlfriend – but with Robin’s body having never turned up, prosecutors have been unable to arrest Gombert for her murder.  And then there’s this:  there are ties between Robin Murphy, Josette Wright and Howard Gombert that make Gombert a more than reasonable suspect in both cases.  Add to all of this the fact that Anthony DiPippo’s original trial attorney had also represented…wait for it…Howard Gombert!  Join Melissa as she unravels the tangled facts and seeks to get to the bottom of who killed whom – and if you know anything about either case, please call the Putnam County New York Sheriff’s Office at (845) 225-4300.

This episode was really fun to record because I had the opportunity to interview a good friend of mine, Dr. Robyn Murphy! What we unpacked in this episode is, what I really believe, is going to be the new frontier of health and medicine.   This new frontier I'm talking about is this idea of ‘precision medicine' and individualized medicine. When I first started my career, that meant that we listened to the individualized stories, symptoms, and experiences of our patients to craft a unique approach to their health. Nowadays, however, this idea of individualized care and precision medicine means that we're able to look at the blueprint of your health; your actual DNA, to be able to understand how we can craft something that not only incorporates your life stories but enables us to address your health in a manner we never thought was possible.   Dr. Robin Murphy is truly an expert at dissecting the intersection between genetics and lifestyle medicine. As the Scientific Advisor for DNA Labs — a Toronto-based genetic company that does lifestyle genetic testing as well as pharmacogenetic testing — there is no better guest than Dr. Murphy to discuss this concept of individualized care and unpack how it is going to directly impact the lives of our patients.   Key Takeaways: [:47] About today's guest, Robyn Murphy! [2:05] Welcoming Dr. Murphy to the podcast! [2:39] Robyn sets the stage by sharing her story and what makes her uniquely qualified to talk about precision medicine and individualized care. [4:11] Robyn shares the history of how genetic testing has been used in medicine. [6:40] Robyn provides context on why genetic testing is so incredibly important — but it also isn't the ‘end-all, be-all.' [11:18] Why learning about these lifestyle genetics is so empowering in terms of taking control of your health. [12:18] Robyn highlights the categories of genetic markers that are most commonly examined. [14:27] Why it's so crucial to work with a strategist to be able to dissect this information. Robyn shares how she clinically leverages this data to build out a unique lifestyle prescription for patients. [17:38] When prescribing a patient a diet or lifestyle that is based on their genes, are they expected to adhere to it for the rest of their life? [19:44] Robyn explains what epigenetics is all about! [23:42] Robyn speaks about some of the research around the genetic understanding of mental health. [29:42] Robyn provides her thoughts on pharmacogenomics. [33:03] Robyn shares what genetic testing actually looks like in practice as well as the privacy laws around it. Experiencing goosebumps indicates healthy life and good relationships, a new study has found. The research was part of the Summer of Goosebumps study, which was commissioned by global credit card and payment services company Barclaycard. Matthew Sachs, a researcher from Harvard University, and Robin Murphy, a professor at the University of Oxford, both led the study. They determined whether or not experiencing goosebumps says something about a person's state of health and personality. During the Reading [RED-ing] and Leeds music festivals last summer, the researchers analyzed how 100 participants responded to a live music performance. The participants, who wore a monitoring device, underwent a series of tests that measured their heart rates, movement to music, and instances when they had goosebumps. The participants also answered questions about their personalities. Results showed that 55% of the participants experienced goosebumps during the live performance. Among these participants, 66% considered themselves emotionally and physically healthy during the course of the experiment. Those who felt goosebumps at some point in the experiment also labeled themselves as empathetic and agreeable in relationships. With these findings, the researchers concluded that experiencing goosebumps while being fully immersed in a live music performance affects individuals' well-being and temperament. After the experiment, the researchers conducted a follow-up survey among 2,000 adults. Results of the survey revealed that 77% of the respondents experienced the phenomenon. The survey also found that positive emotional events, such as hearing certain words of affirmation and seeing a newborn child for the first time, caused some respondents to experience goosebumps.

This week we catch up with Aldo Hernandez and Dr. Dan Berger of Iceberg Projects to talk about Art +Positive, Act Up, and the legacy for the 80s and 90s. From Iceberg Projects... Iceberg Projects is pleased to present selections from the Art+ Positive archives, curated by Dr. Daniel Berger and John Neff. The first exhibition of the group’s archive, this show is the first step in an ongoing project of research and scholarship around the materials.   A June 1989 Vanity Fair profile of Mark Kostabi included this quotation from the celebrity artist:   These museum curators, that are for the most part homosexual, have controlled the art world in the eighties. Now they’re all dying of AIDS, and although I think it’s sad, I know it’s for the better. Because homosexual men are not actively participating in the perpetuation of human life.   That summer, Art+ Positive organized as an affinity group of ACT UP New York in protest of Kostabi’s remarks and other instances of “homophobia, AIDSphobia, and censorship in the arts.”   Art+ Positive members included Dennis Davidson, Bill Dobbs, Lola Flash, Catherine Gund, Aldo Hernandez, Leon (Tracy) Mostovoy, Robin Murphy, Ray Navarro, Hunter Reynolds, Jody Rhone, Julie Tolentino and David Wojnarowicz. Collaborating artists also represented in the archive include Donna Binder, David Bradshaw, Ana De Orbegoso, Martha Fleming & Lyne Lapointe, Diviana Ingravallo, Zoe Leonard, Anthony Viti and Michael Wakefield.   Iceberg’s exhibition will include artworks and a rotating display of documents, ephemera and protest signage from this collective of artists practicing at the intersection of the HIV / AIDS crisis and the Culture Wars of the Bush era. A workstation in the gallery will be used in cataloging and digitizing the archive during the run of the show.   Equipped, created by Ray Navarro with assistance from Zoe Leonard, will be among the works exhibited. An image-text triptych in artist-designed frames, Equipped slyly mobilizes references to queer sex, AIDS medicine, and censored public speech. It was included in the 1990 PS 122 exhibition An Army of Lovers: Combatting AIDS, Homophobia, and Censorship, which opened on the day of Navarro’s death. The elements of a large collage installation by David Wojnarowicz, also shown in the PS 122 exhibit before being dispersed into different collections, will be brought together for display at Iceberg for the first time in 25 years.
