For his visit, the PM chose the historically significant Dhyana Mandapam inside the Swami Vivekananda Memorial, situated on a rocky islet. Modi started his meditation with prayers at the renowned Sri Bhagavathi Amman Temple before boarding a special boat to the mid-sea Vivekananda Memorial. The National Capital on Wednesday witnessed light rains and thunderstorms amidst record breaking temperatures and a severe heatwave. On the same day, Mungeshpur in Northwest Delhi had recorded the highest-ever temperature in the city at 52.3 degrees Celsius. Delhi water minister Atishi announced that a Rs 2000 fine would be imposed on anyone found to be wasting water. This included washing cars with a hose, letting their water tanks overflow or using private connections for commercial activity. With the BJP turning up the heat on the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD over the growing influence of his aide and former bureaucrat V K Pandian, Patnaik on Thursday sought to make it clear that Pandian is not his “successor”, and speculation suggesting this is “an exaggeration”. On whether his party has a succession plan, Patnaik reiterated that the successor “will be decided by the people of the state. That is the natural result in these things”.Days after former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif admitted that Islamabad had violated the Lahore pact, India on Thursday said an objective view is emerging on the issue in the neighbouring country. Sharif on Tuesday said Islamabad had “violated” an agreement with India signed by him and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999, in an apparent reference to the Kargil misadventure by General Pervez Musharraf. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said quote, “You are aware of our position on the issue. I need not have to reiterate that. We note that there is an objective view emerging in Pakistan as well on this matter,” Unquote. On Sunday night, an Israeli air strike on an area designated for displaced Palestinians in Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip, resulted in the deaths of 45 people and injured 249 others. A social media campaign titled 'All eyes on Rafah' emerged after the loss of at least 37 lives on May 28, gaining significant attention. In response, Israel launched the campaign “Where were eyes on October 7th?” referencing the October 7 Hamas-led attacks that killed at least 1,200 people. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Pakistan's new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has his task cut out for him. From steering the economy out of choppy waters to dealing with a belligerent opposition that continues to contest the results of February's general elections, Mr. Sharif has to show that he is up to the job. As Cabinet formation and election of a new President await Pakistan, Mr. Sharif will also be watched for his ability to deal with the country's permanent establishment – the Army. Will the fact that he has more patience than his brother Nawaz Sharif allow for political stability in governance? To discuss these issues, I am joined from Karachi by Shahzeb Jillani, co-host of Dawn TV's current affairs show, Zara Hut Kay.
Pakistan's elections took place 10 days ago. While the formerly ousted prime minister Imran Khan's party won the most seats, a military backed coalition with the incumbent prime minister Nawaz Sharif's party seemed likely - until serious information regarding election manipulation came out. KCSB's Annabelle Hurst has the story.
NOTE: Shebhaz Sharif, brother of Nawaz Sharif, was sworn in as Prime Minister on 3/4. This episode was recorded several days before, on 2/29.This week, A'ndre chatted with Uzair Younus, Principal at The Asia Group and host of Pakistonomy, about Pakistan's recent elections involving jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, recently-unexiled former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and the military actors who may ultimately call the political shots. Uzair provides a general history of Pakistan's politics, giving context around each of the major players and dissecting the claim that 'the military' is in charge of Pakistan, and why 'the military's' preferred Prime Minister has changed over the years. A'ndre and Uzair also chat about who exactly 'the military' is, and why it should not be considered a single entity but rather as several key actors in the security and defense apparatus. Uzair provides key political profiles on Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif, and outlines why it appears neither of them will be named Prime Minister after a chaotic election cycle. The two discuss why Pakistan's elections are so significant, and conclude with a conversation on what the implications for U.S.-Pakistan relations are.
Thrice bowled out of office by Pakistan's Generals, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is handing power to his daughter. The Generals alone, though, can't be blamed for his failure to build democratic institutions, modernise the economy and make peace with India.----more----Read full article here: https://theprint.in/opinion/security-code/nawaz-sharifs-pm-tenure-shows-pakistani-politicians-can-never-solve-countrys-core-problems/1983265/

Security personnel fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowds. Meanwhile, Delhi's borders were further fortified, with security personnel deployed in large numbers and barricades laid out across all possible entry points. Among other things, the farmers are seeking MSP guarantee for 23 crops, waiver of their debts and withdrawal of cases registered against them during the 2020-21 farmers' agitation.Prime Minister Modi began his speech at the World Government Summit in Dubai by thanking ‘his brother' the UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for a warm welcome to the country. The PM also said, quote, "Over the last few years, people's trust has increased in the Indian government. People have trust in the intent and commitment of the Indian government. This was possible only because we prioritised public sentiments in governance." Unquote. With a day left for the deadline to submit nomination papers for the February 27 Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP and Congress released their official list of candidates for the polls. The Congress nominated veteran leader Sonia Gandhi as its candidate from Rajasthan, spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Himachal Pradesh and former minister Chandrakant Handore from Maharashtra. In Bihar, the party re-nominated party leader Akhilesh Prasad Singh. The BJP, meanwhile, announced Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan as its Rajya Sabha candidates from Odisha and Madhya Pradesh respectively.Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has cancelled the Jharkhand leg of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which was scheduled to start today. He will instead join the ongoing farmers' protest. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on X, quote, "The Yatra will resume at 2 PM on the 15th of February, with a public rally in Aurangabad, Bihar that will be addressed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi." Unquote.PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, who was widely expected to be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan, has instead nominated his brother, former PM Shehbaz Sharif to lead the next coalition government. Party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Nawaz's daughter and party's senior vice president Maryam Nawaz has been nominated for the post of Punjab Chief Minister. In other news, the workers and supporters of Imran Khan's PTI have launched nationwide protests over the alleged "rigging in the general elections".This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

*) More than 100 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes on Rafah A series of Israeli air strikes on the southern Gaza city of Rafah has killed at least 100 Palestinians, according to health officials in the besieged enclave. The strikes hit over a dozen houses and several mosques in different parts of Rafah, authorities said. TRT World correspondent Mohammad al Kassim reported that at least 40 air strikes hit several locations in Rafah and that Israeli naval and artillery shelling took part in the violent attacks on early Monday. *) Trump's remarks put allies at risk: NATO The head of NATO has warned that Donald Trump was putting the safety of US troops and their allies at risk. The Republican presidential front-runner said Russia should be able to do “whatever the hell they want” to NATO members who don't meet their defence spending targets. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said “any suggestion that allies will not defend each other undermines all of our security, including that of the US.” *) Death toll in Senegal protests over delayed election rises to three The death toll amid protests in Senegal over the postponement of the presidential election until December has climbed to three. The announcement of the delay just three weeks ahead of the planned February 25 vote triggered violent clashes between protesters and police in Dakar and several other cities. President Macky Sall said the delay is necessary because electoral disputes threatened the credibility of the poll, but some opposition lawmakers have denounced the move as an “institutional coup.” *) Khan-backed independents dominate parliament in Pakistan ballot: commission Pakistan's national election vote count concluded with independents, mostly backed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, winning 101 of the 264 seats, the election commission's website showed. The final tally was released more than 60 hours after voting ended on February 8 national elections, a delay that has raised questions about the process. The independents came in ahead of the party of another former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, which won 75 seats, making it the largest single party in parliament as Khan's independents ran as individuals. *) Scholar fired for criticising Israel slams German academic censorship Ghassan Hage, an internationally renowned scholar, has slammed German academic institutions for suppressing criticism of Israel, after he was abruptly fired over allegations of anti-Semitic social media posts. He said: “What to me is a fair, intellectual critique of Israel, for them is antisemitism.” The scholar said he finds “Germany's pseudo philosemitism self-serving, and at times racist, instrumentalised to racialise the Palestinian and more generally the Arab and Muslim community in Germany.”

Former Pakistani prime ministers and bitter rivals Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan have both declared victory in elections marred by delayed results and militant attacks. Nawaz Sharif has revealed his party would talk to other groups to form a coalition government as it had failed to win a clear majority on its own.
With most results declared in Pakistan's parliamentary elections, candidates affiliated with jailed opposition leader Imran Khan have won the most seats. But his rival, Nawaz Sharif, has already declared himself the winner. Neither group appears to be on course to win a clear majority. Also in the programme: we speak to a Democratic Congressman about the recent row over US President Joe Biden's age and memory; and the gang warfare is getting worse in Haiti with January being the bloodiest month yet in two years.(Picture: Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif speaks at the party office of Pakistan Muslim League. AP correspondent Karen Chammas reports on Pakistan's national elections.
A country that's broke, beset by radical insurgents and on the front lines of global warming needs leadership its citizens can trust. But Thursday's elections follow a familiar pattern of revolving door politics. Out is former prime minister Imran Khan, who first lost his coalition and then his freedom after feuding with the military-backed establishment. In is a scion of Pakistani politics, Nawaz Sharif, whose return from exile was made possible by a Supreme Court rule change that enabled him to run despite a corruption conviction. The same Sharif once ousted in a coup is back in favour. Why? What's the army's calculation? And how does a youthful nation break out of the dynastic politics of old? The third player in Thursday's elections is Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of assassinated prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Why do dynasties dominate in Pakistan, and what's the alternative?Produced by Charles Wente, Guillaume Gougeon and Imen Mellaz.

Pakistan is a textbook case of Chinese control over countries that are willing to barter their sovereignty and autonomy for pittance.

Three-term Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif is back in the country after his second spell in exile. In episode 1335 of #CutTheClutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta looks at Sharif's journey, his removal from power (by different authorities each time), why he matters, and why India should take note of his comeback.
Today, Les, Jess, and Jamil discuss the former 3-time Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif's return from his self-imposed exile, and lo' and behold, even though he's banned from holding public office, his lawyers are confident he can be elected as the country's next Prime Minister. This comes as Pakistan is in its worst economic crisis ever, the previous Prime Minister is also facing corruption charges, a “caretaker” Prime Minister is making deals with China, and Sharif's party is losing popularity all the while dealing with its own Taliban insurgency. Is the Pakistan military giving Sharif the green light to run for Prime Minister? Who is really calling the shots in the Pakistan government? How might the chaotic hold-up in Congress benefit Pakistan?Hear our experts debate these issues and more in 10 minutes on our latest episode of Fault Lines! Want to learn more about this topic? Deliveries of aid began to arrive in Gaza from Egypt, via the Rafah border crossing. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
A special conference in Cairo to discuss the conflict in Gaza has ended without agreement. It was attended by leaders and other representatives from more than twenty countries. We have an interview with the Norwegian foreign minister Espen Barth Eide, who was at the summit. Also in the programme: Israeli violence against the Palestinian surges in the West Bank; one of England's greatest-ever footballers, Bobby Charlton, has died at the age of 86; and a former Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, returns from exile. In this episode, Amber and Uzair talk Nawaz Sharif's return to Pakistan and what it means. We also talk about the ongoing series of interviews of political leaders after they had gone missing. In particular, Amber explains the ethics of journalism and how some of these interviews violate these ethics. We also talk about the Supreme Court's ongoing hearings and its implications. In this episode, we chose not to talk about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and this was a conscious choice. If you'd like to listen to what is going on in Gaza and what the ongoing conflict means for the region, check out the latest Pakistonomy here - https://youtu.be/K45m1I-eXOk If you have suggestions, please leave a comment about what your top nazuk mors for Pakistan are. Nawaz Sharif has promised to return home to save his increasingly beleaguered party ahead of elections. But to sit in Parliament, he has to get the Suprme Court to overturn a court judgment which held he didn't meet Pakistan's constitutional requirement for MPs to be pious and honest.
