Pope Francis has been laid to rest at his favourite church in Rome, Santa Maria Maggiore, after a funeral attended by hundreds of thousands of people. Many lined the streets to see his coffin being taken there from the Vatican on an adapted popemobile. He is the first pontiff in more than 120 years to be buried outside the Vatican. Also in the programme: With tensions high between India and Pakistan after a shooting in Kashmir, we have an interview with the politician son of assassinated Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto; and an attempt to crack down on so-called 'headphone dodgers' on trains and buses.(Photo: Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re blessed Pope Francis' coffin during the funeral mass.
God Lytt!

*) Gaza's Nasser Hospital ‘has become a place of death' — UN An official from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, expressed concern over the state of the Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Younis in the south of besieged Gaza. Jonathan Whittall, senior humanitarian affairs officer at OCHA in the occupied Palestinian territory, said: “The conditions are appalling. There are dead bodies in the corridors. Patients are in a desperate situation.” He also added that the hospital “has become a place of death, not a place of healing.” *) UN official says ‘there needs to be an explanation on how the veto is used' Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the five countries that hold the veto power at the UN Security Council “have a great amount of responsibility, and there needs to be an explanation on how the veto is used.” The spokesperson's comments came after the Security Council failed to adopt a resolution on a humanitarian ceasefire in besieged Gaza for the third time. *) Russia rejects US claims of nuclear space threat Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Moscow has no intention of deploying nuclear weapons in space and that his country has only developed space capabilities similar to those of the US. Putin's statement followed the White House confirmation last week that Russia obtained a “troubling” anti-satellite weapon capability, although such a weapon is not operational yet. *) Pakistan parties reach power-sharing agreement, Khan loyalists left out Two Pakistan parties have reached a power-sharing agreement that will return Shehbaz Sharif to the premiership, leaving out politicians loyal to jailed former leader Imran Khan despite winning the most seats in this month's vote. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan Peoples Party said they had settled days of negotiations on securing a majority to form a coalition government that will also include several smaller parties. Under the deal, the PML-N and PPP will put forward former leader Sharif as prime minister and Asif Ali Zardari, the husband of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, as president. And finally… *) Eagles' iconic ‘Hotel California' lyrics at centre of rare manuscript trial In the mid-1970s, the Eagles were working on a spooky, cryptic new song. On a lined yellow pad, Don Henley, with input from band co-founder Glenn Frey, jotted thoughts about “a dark desert highway” and “a lovely place” with a luxurious surface and ominous undertones. The song, “Hotel California”, became one of rock's most indelible singles. And nearly a half-century later, those handwritten pages of lyrics-in-the-making have become the centre of an unusual criminal trial set to open on Wednesday.
Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, has received several jail sentences in recent weeks, all in the lead-up to Pakistan's general election, today, on 8 February. In Khan's telling, this is about Pakistan's military keeping him and his followers out of power. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we'll look at Pakistan's political history, Imran Khan's rise to power, and what might happen in the election… Squiz recommends: Reading: For a deeper dive into the different parties contesting the election and their policies, Al Jazeera has a comprehensive explainer piece. Listening: The BBC has a podcast series about the assassination of Benazir Bhutto from 2018.
A country that's broke, beset by radical insurgents and on the front lines of global warming needs leadership its citizens can trust. But Thursday's elections follow a familiar pattern of revolving door politics. Out is former prime minister Imran Khan, who first lost his coalition and then his freedom after feuding with the military-backed establishment. In is a scion of Pakistani politics, Nawaz Sharif, whose return from exile was made possible by a Supreme Court rule change that enabled him to run despite a corruption conviction. The same Sharif once ousted in a coup is back in favour. Why? What's the army's calculation? And how does a youthful nation break out of the dynastic politics of old? The third player in Thursday's elections is Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of assassinated prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Why do dynasties dominate in Pakistan, and what's the alternative?Produced by Charles Wente, Guillaume Gougeon and Imen Mellaz.

Sometimes in life you stumble across a book that contains an unbelievable but moving story, and Stephen Chua's story is just that. It contains all sorts of incredible things during his time spent in the special forces branch of the Singaporean army from 1981. He moved up the ranks fast, and made it to the level of Colonol by the time he was 21 years old, because he had some special abilities. From the age of 3, he had had very high levels of gamma brainwave activity, was very strong for his stature, and was highly intelligent scoring very high on IQ test's during his time in the army. He talks about reptilian type hominids that appear to be a hybrid between reptiles and humans, that are living on our planet in the jungles, under ground, in Area 51 and even on Mars. Him and his team had to go in and apprehend them when a reptilian hybrid was about to kill the Pakistan PM, Benazir Bhutto in 1995, and also another one that was about to kill the Singapore PM. They were also sent in to Thailand, Japan and Malaysia to eliminate other reptilian type beings, as they were stealing children and killing people. But it is his tales of Area 51 that are most interesting, because it not only looks like the US military are working with extraterrestrials, but they are working with malevolent ones. Is this the deep state I wonder? Because of his unprecedented high levels of gamma brainwaves he was recruited to fly a new type of technology, where you fly the plane with your own mind - not using AI. This was most likely extraterrestrial technology because the US military were not able to use it and many pilots had died trying to fly it, until Stephen came along. He also describes the 3 different types of extraterrestrial beings that he met on the base, who needed to be escorted by armed guards, using energy weapons, because they were so nefarious. One of the species even had portals on the base that went between there and their own planet and there were people traveling between mars and earth - in many cases highly trained technicians - who were working in a base on mars. However, the saddest part of this story is that 4 days after Stephen decided to speak up and share his incredible accounts, he died under suspicious circumstances. It is an amazing story, and if he had lived longer I have no doubt he would have been able to share more. In 1988, a 15-year-old Kamila Shamsie stayed up all night to watch Pakistan elect its first woman prime minister. Years later, and politics is still very much at the centre of the writer's life – on and off the page. The Pakistani / British writer has long been a vocal critic of the UK government's immigration and civil rights policies, and yet she only felt able to write Home Fire – which offers a piercing critique of Islamophobia within the British political establishment – after she became a citizen of the country. Today on Ways to Change the World, Kamila Shamsie joins Krishnan Guru-Murthy to discuss her Pakistani upbringing, how politics shaped her writing and her view of Suella Braverman's ‘racist' immigration policy. Produced by Silvia Maresca and Alice Wagstaffe
Carol Costello is one the most authentic and trusted journalists in the modern era. Watching her conduct an interview is like a masterclass in how it should be done. Her warm and inviting presence always made her guests comfortable and willing, to tell the truth - no matter how difficult or sensitive the topic happens to be. I swear, she is either Wonder Woman in disguise or was gifted her very own "Lasso of Truth" by her. She's that good at getting real, truthful answers from whomever she might be interviewing. I've been a huge fan of Carol's for as long as I remember, and I still can't believe she said yes to come onto the show. She tells it like it is, and honestly, in a way we all need to hear it. Gosh, how I miss seeing her on television every day. But she's creating even bigger RIpples today. Helping the next generation of journalists learn to think for themselves, question everything and pursue the facts, not simply strive for the likes, the views, or the notoriety. Why? Because journalists should never be part of the story. The good ones know how to tell it so that we understand and, hopefully, learn from it. To that end, I am grateful to know people like Carol are out there shaping the hearts and minds of our future journalists. Carol's Bio: Carol Costello is an award-winning journalist and former anchor and correspondent at CNN and HLN. Her distinguished career as a local, regional, and national broadcaster spans three decades, covering a broad range of world leaders, events, and politics. Carol serves as Special Advisor and Ambassador at LMU and teaches a broadcast journalism course in LMU's journalism program. She also hosts “Carol Costello Presents: Blind Rage,” a true-crime serial podcast and “I Hate Your Generation,” a podcast series exploring the generational divide. In 2019, Carol created Project Citizen, a special program at LMU that provides resources and mentorship for student journalists. Project Citizen's core mission is to discover ways to ease the partisan divide in our country. Carol also serves on the journalism professional advisory board at Kent State University in Ohio and is a mentor to its journalism students. In 2001, Carol joined CNN as an anchor on “Headline News.” From 2002 to 2009, she anchored “Daybreak,” the network's former early morning news program. And from 2012 to 2018 she anchored “Newsroom.” She also sub- anchored and was a political reporter for “The Situation Room.” Carol contributed to CNN.com Opinion from 2015-2017. In 2018, she hosted HLN's Across America with Carol Costello. At CNN, Carol was at the forefront of some of the world's most significant stories. She was part of CNN's Peabody Award-winning coverage of the Gulf Oil Spill, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2008 presidential election. She also reported on Pope Francis' visit to the United States, the Boston Marathon bombing, the last space shuttle launch, the Ohio midterm elections, the shooting at Virginia Tech, the tsunami disaster in South Asia, the Russian school hostage crisis, and Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. Carol interviewed four former U.S. presidents: President Jimmy Carter, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, and President Bill Clinton; and she covered five presidential inaugurations as well as the 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2016 presidential elections. Before joining CNN, Carol worked at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., where she was an anchor and investigative reporter for five years. Prior to that, she spent three years at WBAL-TV in Baltimore. She began her career as a weekend anchor and reporter for WAKR-TV in Akron, Ohio, then moved to WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, to serve as the station's principal weeknight anchor. Costello earned a degree in journalism from Kent State University in Ohio. Carol's reporting has been honored numerous times, including a 1991 Emmy Award for a special on crack and cocaine, a UPI award, and several Associated Press awards. She received an Emmy nomination in 1993, then again in 2008 for outstanding coverage of a breaking news story after Benazir Bhutto's assassination. In 2009, she received an individual Emmy nomination for Outstanding Morning Program. Carol has been interviewed by the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Associated Press, Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Magazine, Columbus Monthly, Akron Beacon Journal, and the Canton Repository.

Based in Mumbai, Aayush Puthran is an experienced cricket reporter and analyst, with a strong focus on women's cricket. He has written an inspirational book, Unveiling Jazbaa, which weaves together the astonishing personal stories of the creators and players of women's cricket in Pakistan.Aayush begins by explaining the Urdu word Jazbaa. It has no precise English equivalent, but conveys a cocktail of emotions and passions which generate stunning unexpected achievement. It has been regularly applied to the Pakistan men's team: he thought that the women's team also deserved it, to convey their determination to step out.He outlines the early history of Pakistan women's cricket in the 1970s, largely confined to well-connected women in élite institutions. As in India in the same era, it was much easier for women to take part in individual sports such as running or badminton or in hockey.Aayush tells the dramatic story of the Khan sisters of Karachi, Shaiza and Sharmeen (who sadly passed away in 2021). They pioneered Pakistan's international women's team against entrenched opposition and often great personal risk. Daughters of a wealthy father and a cricket-crazed mother (who had postponed her wedding to watch Pakistan play the West Indies), they had discovered themselves as cricketers during their English education during the 1980s. They identified with Pakistan's increasingly successful men's team of that period, but had no women's team which they and others could aspire to. They therefore decided to create one from nothing. He explains the political background which made their ambitions and activities so dangerous. Pakistan's then military dictator, General Zia ul-Haq had formed an alliance with deeply conservative fringe religious movements. They had promulgated the so-called Hudood Ordinances, imposing severe controls on the lives of women and girls, especially all activities outdoors, with severe punishments for alleged female transgressors of any kind. They could play cricket and other sports only in enclosed private spaces, such as the compound at their father's carpet factory. When Zia was killed in an air crash in 1988 and replaced by Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan's first female Prime Minister, the sisters thought it would be safe to organize a proper cricket match involving former men's stars including the great Zaheer Abbas. They were mistaken. The religious ultras were still strong and the sisters faced death threats. They were forced instead to play an all-women's match in the compound with a massive police presence, and their father demanded that they fly back to England immediately it finished.Continue reading here: https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/episode-113-a-story-made-for-the-movies-pakistan-womens-cricket/Get in touch with us by emailing obornehellercricket@outlook.com, we would love to hear from you!

I think it's America's turn to elect a celebrated athlete for head of state. Feeling good about OJ. Here comes Number 47, President Juice.Hot Pocket goes to its roots, trouble's brewin' in the motherland. Here's a 101 course on how Imran Khan got in and out of the Prime Minister seat. We make the case that this is a story about foreign meddling. America's unsavory history with the Pakistani military, the secret letter from the state department, and the falling value of the US dollar should raise some eyebrows. And then we kick Benazir Bhutto back down the glass ceiling. Our mantra stands: If you're in America, focus on what America's doing.
