Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Tuesday, September 24, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started.Banks are finding creative ways to attract new customers amid a deposit crunch. Smaller banks in particular are spicing up their offerings to stand out. They're partnering with fintechs and rolling out products such as standalone fixed deposits and secured loan-linked deposits. Anshika Kayastha reports on how this shift is helping banks compete with mutual funds and insurance options which have been drawing in more household savings. Banks are also teaming up with platforms such as PhonePe and Mobikwik to offer FDs without the need for a bank account, aiming to make banking as convenient as online shopping. As the festive season approaches, online sellers of refurbished electronics such as smartphones and laptops are gearing up for a sales boost. ReFit Global and Cashify, leaders in the refurbished market, are expecting significant increases in sales figures during the festive months, which is traditionally a high point for electronics purchases. Despite the availability of newer devices at competitive prices, refurbished models continue to attract consumers looking for cost-effective alternatives, reports Sowmya Ramasubramanian. These are particularly popular in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, where budget-conscious consumers can access premium brands at reduced prices. Moreover, the convenience of monthly payment options and the increased presence of these products on major e-commerce platforms enhance their appeal. Speaking of smartphones, let's talk about Samsung. A workers' union is protesting against low wages at the company's plant in Chennai. Talks with Samsung's management have not progressed and the protests are in their third week. Sumant Banerji and N Madhavan teamed up to bring you an on-ground report of this stalemate. The workers have three main demands: recognising the labour union, increasing wages and improving working conditions. For now, Samsung has hired contractual workers to ensure that its production isn't halted for too long. But who will blink first? The union doesn't seem like it will budge, while Samsung has faced a slew of issues that has reduced its market share. JSW Group is moving its massive 40,000 crore rupee EV and battery project from Odisha to Maharashtra, chasing political stability and new opportunities. Initially planned for Cuttack and Paradip, they're now eyeing Aurangabad and Nagpur, Alisha Sachdev reports. This switch follows Maharashtra's welcoming of big-ticket projects such as JSW Energy's 25,000 crore rupee lithium battery venture in Nagpur and a 27,200 crore rupee electric vehicle plant in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. This isn't the first time a big name has shifted a plant because of regional politics—remember Tata's Nano move to Gujarat in 2008? Similarly, JSW's pivot aligns with its strategy to enhance supply chains and secure a stable setup. If you've been in the market for diamonds in the past couple of years, you may have been tempted to buy lab-grown ones, which are nearly indistinguishable from their natural counterparts. Varuni Khosla and Suneera Tandon report that as the festive season approaches, customers are likely to find great deals as the diamond market is seeing a massive correction in prices. Real diamonds are about 20 percent cheaper, while lab-grown diamonds have seen a whopping 100 percent drop in prices. This is also an important development for India, as roughly 90 percent of the world's diamonds are polished here.

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, April 17, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Indian benchmark indices fell for the third consecutive session on Tuesday, influenced by negative cues from global markets which are currently under pressure due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The Sensex closed down 0.62 per cent, while the Nifty ended the session 0.56 per cent lower.Shaktikanta Das, the Reserve Bank of India - India's highest monetary authority - has recently flagged concerns about unauthorised forex trading platforms, urging banks to keep a sharp eye on them. This has sparked a broader discussion about the need for tighter regulation in India's forex market. These platforms are where most foreign exchange transactions happen. They are primarily used by businesses like importers and exporters to manage their currency risks. These trades usually happen on Over-the-Counter platforms authorised by the RBI or through recognized exchange-traded segments of bourses. So what exactly is going on with forex trading platforms? And what has the RBI done about it? Mint's banking editor Gopika Gopakumar tackles those questions in today's Primer.Smartphone companies in India finally have some good news. The scramble for smartphones in the country, triggered by Covid-19 lockdowns ebbed back as the world returned to normal. However, the March quarter has ignited some hope in the hearts of smartphone manufacturers. This past March quarter, smartphone shipments rose by 5% year-over-year to somewhere between 32.5 to 35 million units, according to data from four industry analysts. It's a refreshing change, especially considering that back in the March quarter of 2021, shipments had peaked at 38 million units. Since then, there's been a bit of a slump. Mint's technology correspondent Shouvik Das reports on this turnaround which is especially crucial for big players like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Vivo, who together made about $38.8 billion in sales in India last year. However, despite these positive signs, industry veterans are advising caution. The broader economic pressures still loom large, affecting consumer confidence. The market has also seen a shift toward refurbished and second-hand smartphones, thanks to the growth of organised retailers in this space. India is gearing up for the third phase of its airport privatisation plan. More airports are expected to see private stakeholders after the upcoming election. Officials close to the matter told Mint's aviation correspondent Anu Sharma of Airports Authority of India's plans to sell off its remaining 13 per cent stake in Bangalore International Airport Ltd . But that's not all — they're also planning to throw the doors open for private bids to manage, operate, and develop 13 other airports, including popular ones like Bhubaneswar, Trichy, Indore, Raipur, Amritsar, and Varanasi. There's also talk of selling stakes in Hyderabad airport. The authorities are planning to bundle six profitable airports with seven smaller, not-so-profitable ones like Kushinagar, Gaya, Hubballi, Aurangabad, Jabalpur, Tirupati, and Kangra. This mix and match might just make the deal more attractive to potential investors. This push towards privatisation is part of a bigger picture - India's National Monetisation Plan which was rolled out back in 2021. The plan is ambitious, aiming to privatise around 25 airports and offload airport authority's shares in big metro airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. The government is hoping to unlock 21,000 crore rupees from these sales between 2022 and 2025.Mid-budget movies, which really felt the pinch through Covid, are suddenly back in the spotlight. Judging by the impressive box office numbers of films like Crew, Shaitaan, and Article 370 it looks like affordable ticket prices and clever marketing are paying off. Let's talk numbers. The movie Crew, featuring stars like Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon, earned 77 crore rupees since its release at the end of March. Ajay Devgn's horror thriller Shaitaan pulled in a cool 148 crore rupees from early March, and the political drama Article 370 isn't far behind with 82 crore rupees since late February. Andthese films have all been profitable. Even though the Hindi box office saw a 25 per cent dip year-on-year in the last quarter of FY24, small and medium-budget films are making a stronger showing than they have since the pandemic began. They're now accounting for 30-35 per cent of box office receipts, up from just 12-15 per cent previously. Mint's media and entertainment correspondent Lata Jha reports on the resurgence of mid-budget bollywood movies and the changing landscape of Indian cinema. As tensions in West Asia heat up, there's a real concern that crude oil prices might just hit the roof, possibly soaring past $100 per barrel if things continue to escalate. This is a big deal not just globally, but especially for India's oil marketing companies, because hiking fuel prices during an election season is not a popular move. Now, high crude prices are already an issue for state-owned oil marketing companies because it squeezes the marketing margins – which is the difference between what it costs to make petrol or diesel and what they sell it for. Right now, those margins are pretty thin, about 5 rupees per litre for petrol and barely a rupee for diesel. If crude prices shoot up, these margins could get even tighter. Mint's energy correspondent Rituraj Baruah spoke to industry insiders and analysts to break down the ongoing problem for Indian oil marketing companies. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. R.B. More (1903–1972) was a leader in Babasaheb Ambedkar's movement, a trade unionist and a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). More's life, narrated in his words and those of his son Satyendra More, illuminates the conflict between the promise of Marxist emancipation and the hard reality of the hierarchies of caste. His radicalism challenged both the limits of the politics of caste and the politics of the Left; his was a politics that frontally challenged the rigidities of the caste system and of the class structure. Memoirs of a Dalit Communist: The Many Worlds of R.B.

The historic town is at a distance of about 300kms from Mumbai. Sagar spends the first day exploring the Ajanta caves. Along with Ellora, these cave temples are the first UNESCO world heritage site from India. Ajanta caves are about 4 hours away from Aurangabad. The caves contain intricate sculptures and frescos and are an exemplary form of buddhist architecture. Ellora on the other hand is a mix of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain rock cut caves and temples, the most popular being the Kailashnath temple or Cave 16. The next day's itinerary starts off with the Grishneshwar temple, one of the 12 jyotirlings of Hinduism. The temple is believed to be almost 1000 years old. The temple was reconstructed after previous Mughal destruction by queen Ahilyabai Holkar On the way from Ellora to Aurangabad, Sagar makes his next stop at the tomb of Aurangzeb, a very modest structure given he was one of the last powerful Mughal emperors. From here, Sagar visits the Devagiri fort, believed to be one of the most impregnable forts in India. The other structures within the complex include Chand Minar, similar to the Qutub minar The final destination on the itinerary is the Bibi ka Maqbara, a mausoleum built by Aurangzeb for his first wife, Dilras Banu Begum. The monument resembles the Taj Mahal but is on a much smaller scale. Make sure to enjoy a sunset at the maqbara to cap off your visit. Other places close by include Aurangabad caves, Panchakki and Shivaji Maharaj Museum. Also dont forget to try out the paan at the popular outlet Tara paan center and Paithani sarees. Anirudh also talks about the historical significance of the palace, a brief history of the rulers over time as well as the natural history of the DeccanWe narrow down on the Ellora cave temples, a set of over a hundred cave temples that date back to the 7th century built by Buddhists, Hindus and Jain patrons. 34 of those temples are now open to the public and offer a view into the architectural and engineering brilliance of that time. We discuss about the dominant Rashtrakuta empire who ruled the sub-continent during this time, were believed to be vassals/feudatories of the Chalukyan dynasty and had humble beginnings. Anirudh speaks about the magnificent Cave 16 or Kailashnath temple, believed to be inspired by the Kailash mountain, the abode of Lord Shiva. We speak about the backstory of how the temple is believed to have been constructed from a monolith and is the largest such structure during its time. The temple was constructed by excavating 2 million cubic feet of basalt rock, probably formed during the cretaceous era which led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Anirudh gives wonderful descriptions of the architecture of the temple, some prominent sculptures as well as the sheer engineering and architectural brilliance of the builders. We cap off the episode by discussing other important temples of the complex, including Buddist and Jain caves/temples. The Essential Sai Satcharita
Chapter 15 - Historical Commentary

The Essential Sai Satcharita

Chapter 15 describes how Baba explained to Das Ganu the style of Kirtan by Naarad, and how he made Cholkar drink tea saturated with sugar after fulfilment of his vow. And lastly, how, from their chirping, Baba understood about the lizard that came from Aurangabad to meet her sister in the mosque. Chapter 15 is called Sankat Mochan, and many devotees read this chapter to free themselves from all obstacles, by Baba's grace. Spreading the palms before Baba is completely surrendering the ego with humility, and knowing fully well that we are helpless without Baba's grace. Day and night (in good times and in bad times), He is our only refuge, standing behind us and showering His grace upon us. In this chapter, there is the story of Das Ganu all decked up with an Angrakha, Pheta and Uparna to perform a Kirtan. Baba, with his characteristic humour, asks Das Ganu where he was going all decked up like a bridegroom. Baba then tells him to get rid of all the outward show, and to perform Kirtans with a bare chest, like Narad Muni, the father of all Kirtankars. The only adornment required was intense faith and devotion, which became Das Ganu's Naradiya Paddhati. I will now relate the life of Das Ganu, and how Baba transformed him into Sant Kavi Das Ganu Maharaj. Ganpatrao Dattatreya Sahasrabuddhe, popularly known as Das Ganu Maharaj, was born on 6th January, 1868, and passed away on 25th November, 1962. Das Ganu hailed from Akolner village, and was born in a Brahmin family. His studies started when he had his thread ceremony at the age of nine, and stopped when he was 14 years old, and he studied English only up to fourth grade. He married when he was 23, after which he came to Ahmednagar, but remained a vagrant and indulged in gossip. While wandering, he met a police superintendent, Mr. Kennedy, who employed him as a Sepoy for a monthly salary of nine rupees. It was when he was working as a Hawaldar in the police force that Nanasaheb Chandorkar took him to Sai Baba. Nanasaheb was the deputy collector at that time (around 1890), and Das Ganu accompanied him to ingratiate himself with Nanasaheb, but with no particular desire to see Baba. Das Ganu took a great deal of interest in Tamashas and village plays of an erotic and somewhat obscene nature, and even took part in them. He dressed like a female and pranced about in great delight. He also composed poems impromptu. Neither his professional ways, nor his personal life, met with Baba's approval. Baba wanted Das Ganu to walk a different path. With considerable effort, Das Ganu gradually withdrew from play-acting, but the police-force career was another matter. For more than 10 years, he resisted Baba's admonitions until fate wove such a web that circumstances compelled him to resign from the force, after several mishaps. In fact, if Baba had not extended his protection, Das Ganu would have been punished and disgraced, and might have even faced death. After retiring from the force, Das Ganu followed Baba's advice and settled at Nanded. He spent his time performing Kirtans, going where his devotees invited him. The annual Kirtan at Shirdi, on Baba's Urus, which coincided with Ram Navami festival, was also delivered by Das Ganu, even during Baba's times, from 1914. He kept up the custom for several decades, thereafter. His wife's death in 1919 left him childless, but unfettered to pursue the path of a Kirtankar. No monetary collections were made by Das Ganu for his work as a Kirtankar. He performed his Brahminical duties, carried on Puranik studies, and performed Kirtans, at which he was excellent. His needs were well taken care of by the devotees from various parts of the country with whom he stayed, upon their invitation. After all, Baba had assured him about his temporal welfare. Besides being a Kirtankar, he wrote several books, amongst which are Sant Katha Amrita in 1903, Bhakta Leela Amrita in 1906, and Bhakta Saar Amrita in 1925. The first book features some stories about Baba, and Baba is said to have blessed the effort. Though Das Ganu was one of the foremost Bhaktas of Baba, he did not spend too much time with Baba. Even when he was in Shirdi, he rarely saw Baba, who would not allow him to stay for long in the Masjid. He bade him to go to Vitthal Mandir, where Das Ganu lived and wrote about the lives of saints, or spent his time repeating the Vishnu Sahasranam. The spread of Baba's fame, especially in Maharashtra, is largely due to Das Ganu's Kirtans. But, it is true that his own faith in Baba was not very strong, and often wavered, as at heart, he believed Baba to be a Muslim saint, and not a Poorna Parabrahma. Despite the well-known miracle that Baba performed of making water flow from both his feet, in lieu of the Ganga in which Das Ganu wished to bathe, he was unable to drink that palmful of water which he gathered as Tirth, but only sprinkled it over his head. As he was a Brahmin, Das Ganu thought that he would be polluted by drinking th...
