LinkGevity, founded by two sisters, is developing anti-necrotic technologies, especially for application in kidney disease.Carina Kern is the CEO of the company, while Serena Kern-Libera is the chief operating officer. After reading an article about how space-travel is especially damaging to the kidneys, they applied for a place on the inaugural NASA Space-H Accelerator program, and how medicine can support human deep-space missions.LinkGevity was selected for the program, which is in its inaugural year. LinkGevity was selected as its research has uncovered technology with significant potential to minimize the health and performance risks in human spaceflight.LinkGevity's anti-necrotics applications cover four major areas: organoid preservation and growth; cryopreservation; organ growth and preservation; and kidney protection.LinkGevity's novel proprietary Blueprint Theory of Aging, developed by Kern, offers a multi-disciplinary framework for understanding the development of age-related diseases and deterioration. The theory enables the company's AI to accurately identify and target key biological pathways involved in aging and deterioration, with necrosis being one of the most critical processes addressed. To talk about the company's technology, and its application to space, we had a conversation with Carina Kern and Serena Kern-Libera.01:48-05:45: About LinkGevity05:45-06:39: What is the goal for LinkGevity?06:39-09:07: Is early intervention important?09:07-11:10: What is the Blueprint Theory of Aging, and how do you identify and target key biological pathways involved in aging and deterioration?11:10-13:51: Applying the theory13:51-15:03: Necrosis and LinkGevity's Anti-Necrotic technology15:03-18:37: Blocking necrosis and treating disease18:37-19:06: Drug delivery19:06-20:54: The importance of AI20:54-24:43: Connecting LinkGevity's work with space24:43-26:24: The SPACE-H program27:18-28:13: Other biotech involvement in the program28:13-30:13: LinkGevity's presentation at Space-Comm30:13-31:00: Keeping space medicine simple31:00-32:18: The future for LinkGevity32:18-33:14: LinkGevity's timescale33:14-33:47: Clinical trials33:47-34:53: LinkGevity's future space work34:53-35:30: Different space opportunities35:30-38:12: LinkGevity fundingInterested in being a sponsor of an episode of our podcast? With any type of surgery there are risks and possible complications. We are tackling a topic on this episode of the DiepCJourney podcast that is frequently discussed in the community served at DiepCFoundation. I reached out to an expert in the field for our discussion on fat grafting in breast reconstruction. Dr. Emily A. Williamson founded Plastic Surgery Northwest in Spokane Washington in 2010 after completing her surgical training at the prestigious University of Washington Plastic Surgery Residency. She works with a group of five other surgeons performing various aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures including autologous breast reconstruction like DIEP flap. Preoperative patient education and counseling is imperative to minimize fears about fat grafting. Dr. Williams discusses how a skilled surgeon minimizes the occurrence of fat necrosis for both implant-based and autologous breast reconstruction. She describes how fat is utilized to achieve symmetry but also signs and symptoms of fat necrosis and what can be done for patients who develop this after a fat grafting procedure. I had a question on one of my YouTube videos in which I was trying to explain the procedure for broken toes called "closed reduction." That's the fancy term for popping the broken bone back in place or "re-setting the fracture." You may have heard someone say, “Well, I had a fracture and the doctor had to "set it" or the doctor had "put the broken bone back in place.” There is a risk and a benefit to everything. Even with non-surgical fracture treatment. Putting a fractured piece of bone (in a broken toe) back where it belongs is more likely to make it heal in the right position, because you put it back in the right position. If you leave the broken bone in the wrong position, it may heal and then cause problems later because it's crooked. Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast we're talking about the biggest danger with popping a broken toe back in place.

For the 49th episode on the Empowering NICU Parents' Podcast, we review necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) which is a life-threatening newborn condition that involves ischemia and inflammation of the bowel. Necrotizing Enterocolitis is a complex disease that despite decades of research, is still not well understood. The evidence continues to support the concurrent presence of several factors that when combined with a trigger, may lead to a disruption of the normal intestinal bacterial flora followed by an altered inflammatory host response. On this episode, you will learn what factors place infants, especially premature infants, at an increased risk to develop NEC. The common clinical symptoms that infants present with once they develop NEC will be reviewed as well as when they are most likely to occur. Additionally, we touch on some of the subtle behavioral changes infants may display at the onset of the disease that are often most obvious to the parents. Next, the diagnostic tests and labs that are typically done once NEC is suspected will be reviewed followed by a description of the Bell staging system which is used to provide a more uniform clinical definition for NEC. The typical management for NEC will also be discussed, followed by a review of some of the common preventative measures that have been put into place in NICUs today to continue to decrease the incidence of NEC. We close out the episode discussing what the prognosis and mortality rate is for infants who have been diagnosed with NEC. The episode is a great overall review of NEC that will be beneficial for NICU parents and clinicians. Start listening now and get ready to be empowered! Is there life after death? An estimated 9 million Americans from believers to atheists have had a near dear experience, according to the National Institute of Health. This is happening all over the world and 17% occur to people who are clinically dead for a several minutes. On the 50th episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, Army Veteran and Psychotherapist Brian Hoyland shares his remarkable near death experience that he claims took him into the presence of God. Brian's military experience exposed him to toxic chemicals that led to heart failure. He underwent a heart transplant like Paul Cardall. The two discuss what it's like to recover from a heart transplant. About Brian HoylandI began my adult life by joining the U.S. Army Military Police Corps after high school; I served my country all over the world and was disabled due to injuries sustained during service. I then went on to obtain a master's degree in counseling psychology and started working as a psychotherapist with other combat veterans in the Department of Veteran's Affairs. I then worked as a program director and clinical supervisor with criminal offenders for the prison system in MN. I took a job with a private company working with recently released offenders to advance my career and it came with a large pay increase, but 4 months after I started I suffered a major heart failure and almost died. This was just the beginning of what my life would be like for the next couple of years. After having been exposed to toxic chemicals while in the military, I developed an autoimmune disease that would eventually kill me. One night, 8/2016, I suffered sudden and mysterious heart failure, the cause of which took several months, much testing and quite a bit of suffering to discover. The whole time God was gently calling me to repair my relationship with him and it was working. Then, just after the cause was discovered I had a massive cardiac arrest and died for 10 minutes 01/2017. Yet, in that moment, I had a near-death experience, visited heaven and talked with Jesus. I never lost consciousness and I remember my 7 hour fight in the ER, my death, Heaven and my return without a break in my conscious thought. This experience transformed my life as I learned valuable lessons about myself, my life, my faith and our God. When I died I stood face-to-face with God and God showed only love to me and I could feel that love was the same for every human being and it was pure and that God is LOVE (1 John 4:7-8)! I documented my experience in my journal, because While God did let me choose to return, I had failed to ask him how long I could expect to have until I returned to Heaven, so I wanted to be sure if it wasn't long that I would be able to share it. Amazingly, I lived for another 2 years and received a heart transplant on Ash Wednesday 2019. Upon biopsy of my heart after transplant, my Mayo Clinic transplant team told me that there was not a medical reason for my heart to have been functioning at all with such extensive damage. I however knew the cause. So I decided that I must write a book about my story. I tried to share how all of the suffering I endured leading up to the NDE and for the 2 years following until I received my heart transplant, helped me to see God's hand in my life and even during extreme suffering just how faithful and gentle God has been with me. And I want to share this with anyone who will listen. I want people to take away that “God loves them and has a plan for them and will stop at nothing to accept them into heaven if they are willing to trust in him. When I wrote my book I was pressured to take the central focus out and replace it with a more acceptable term so as to increase sales. Can you guess what that was? If you guessed Jesus you were right. Everyone felt referencing Jesus so strongly would turn people away and limit my audience, but how could I have the audacity to leave out my savior, the only reason for my visit at all.Get a copy of Brian's book "From Sudden Death to Paradise" under his alias T.S.
