Thanks in part to a high concentration of the most high-volume judges, the UFC's 2024 debut got off to a smooth start in terms of scoring. Even the many stoppages were clean from the referees. But no perfect night at UFC Apex gave Scott and Dan a couple Contested Rounds to wade into the new year. Plus, word of a 10-8 training session with the Nevada State Athletic Commission gave the CSJ reason to revisit a few lopsided rounds from the end of 2023. linktr.ee/couchsidejudges
Recently described at The Godfather of PED testing in boxing, Dr Flip Homansky was a physician on the Nevada State Athletic Commission for some of the biggest fights in history. Dr Homansky also served on the NSAC Medical Advisory Board Chairman having worked at the Chief Ringside Physician for almost three decades. He is the former Association of Boxing Commissions vice-president and current vice-president of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association. Fascinatingly, he allowed Evander Holyfield to box on against Mike Tyson in the infamous Bite Fite (from a medical perspective), he was there for the Fan Man incident when Bowe fought Holyfield, and he's seen fighters at their best and worst over the years. He's been in the locker rooms with the likes of Tommy Morrison and Marvin Hagler and he is one of the sport's most-respected voices. It has been said: "There is probably no one in the world with more medical experience as it relates to boxing."

On today's episode of UFC Unfiltered, Matt Serra and Jim Norton are joined by ESPN MMA journalist Brett Okamoto for a detailed recap of last Saturday's UFC Fight Night: Pavlovich vs. Blaydes event. With heavyweight Sergei Pavlovich steamrolling Curtis Blaydes for a sixth-straight 1st-round knockout win, the guys discuss where Pavlovich stands in the heavyweight division and what it might take for the 30-year-old to secure a fight against legends like Jon Jones or Stipe Miocic. Then, Jim takes the guys through the rest of Saturday's fight results as Matt explains what he liked from fighters across the main card and prelims. As the topic shifts to the Nevada State Athletic Commission and their decision to use instant replay and change Bobby Green's stoppage win over Jared Gordon into a no contest, the guys engage in an insightful conversation about other problems with state athletic commissions in which Brett takes a hard stance against the idea that open scoring can fix the recent problem of poor scorecards from cage side judges.

Las Vegas referee Kenny Bayless paid his dues to get where he is. He spent years as an amateur official and then had a long apprenticeship on the Nevada State Athletic Commission before going on to become one of the world's leading referees. He was the third man in the ring the night Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Manny Pacquiao and the night Bernard Hopkins defeated Oscar De La Hoya and he was there for the worrying knockouts of Amir Khan against Canelo Alvarez, when Juan Manuel Marquez flattened Pacquaio and when Pacquiao nailed Ricky Hatton. Here, Bayless talks about the sport, the big nights and names and reveals some hidden stories from his incredible experiences.

It is expected to remove cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act, impose a federal tax on the herb and bring about restorative justice to communities affected by the War on Drugs while allowing states largely in control of how to approach legalization. Last week, the Cannabis Freedom Alliance backed by Charles Koch, Snoop Dogg, and Weldon Angelos (as previously discussed on Bowl After Bowl Episode 76: Thanks Your Old Pass) released a white paper urging removal of cannabis from the Schedule I classification under the Controlled Substances Act. Initially, Jacobs-Chavez was slated for the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. At that time, the VADA collection officer introduced himself and Chavez refused to provide the sample. BoxingScene.com has learned that participants for the biggest boxing event of 2019 to date will be subject to testing standards limited to that provided by Nevada State Athletic Commission. Original plans to secure the services of Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) were called off for reasons that haven’t yet been made clear—and too late in the game to rectify with just four weeks to go before fight night. One Free Month of Dazn On TBV http://bit.ly/ThaBoxingVoicexDAZNhttps://www.patreon.com/ThaboxingvoiceBUY THA BOXING VOICE T-SHIRT HERE http://thaboxingvoice.com/storePLEASE SUPPORT!!! Nevada State Athletic Commission has brought down a harsh suspension to Conor McGregor and Khabib, they levied the stiff punishment of a 10 day suspension.
LISTEN TO MIKE ANGOVE TALK WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVEIn the lead up to Khabib Nurmagomedov's lightweight title defence against Conor McGregor at UFC229, McGregor insulted the Russian's family, country, and religion – going beyond promoting the fight to get under Nurmagomedov's skin. Before the fight had even been announced, McGregor and his team attacked a coach carrying Nurmagomedov and other UFC fighters which led to an injury to fellow lightweight Michael Chiesa.Kiwi lightweight Dan Hooker said he felt like McGregor crossed the line, so when Nurmagomedov launched himself out of the octagon at the Irishman's team after making McGregor tap out, it shouldn't be blown out of proportion."It's a physical game, you can't expect that physicality and mentality to be, in an instant, flicked over. It's very hard to draw a line," Hooker said."A lot of things were said. I feel like McGregor crossed the line beyond just promoting the fight. Things were said, he's not mad about what happened. I think people are just getting a bit carried away."After mauling McGregor and claiming a fourth-round win to remain unbeaten in 27 bouts, Nurmagomedov appeared to react to something said in McGregor's corner. When he jumped over the octagon, McGregor chased him but was stopped by security. Footage showed McGregor taking a few shots at one of the Russian's team members on the cage, before a number of men jumped in and started taking shots at McGregor. Three men were detained for attacking McGregor, but he refused to press charges."It's not the same as what McGregor did. McGregor was using objects and throwing weapons and he hurt people outside of it, whereas I feel like Khabib and his mates, they just threw a couple punches. I don't think it's as serious as what Conor did."It's hardly the first time feelings have led to a scuffle breaking out at or during a sporting event. UFC No 9 ranked middleweight Israel Adesanya said you don't have to look too hard to find cases of exactly that."You see it in baseball, American football, even soccer – you look in the stands and there are often fights," Adesanya said. "Just because it's MMA, there's all these f***ing puritans who are like 'what's the deal with this blood sport?'"Hooker believed in getting involved in a scuffle with McGregor's team outside of the octagon, Nurmagomedov robbed himself of the greatest moment of his fighting career."Khabib didn't get the belt strapped on him in the cage, and he's not going to have that moment."Matters could get worse for the Russian, with UFC boss Dana White indicating Nurmagomedov could be stripped of his lightweight title if the Nevada State Athletic Commission decide to hand the champion a length suspension for his role in the melee. However, Hooker said he felt that would be an unnecessary punishment."Give him a bit of a slap on the wrist, maybe stand him down. I'm sure the Nevada State Athletic Commission is going to cut themselves a healthy little cheque. That should be punishment enough."

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the president and board chairman of VADA, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association. We spoke with her Saturday in New York. "The best aspect of what VADA has accomplished is education," she said. "The fans are much more educated. I think the fighters are getting much more educated, and asking more and more questions." She noted that while the WBC's Clean Boxing Program which works with VADA only mandates that boxers ranked in the top 15 in each weight class by the WBC be drug-tested, more fighters are actually applying to be tested. "What people don't know is there's probably at least well over 100 fighters that have volunteered that are not rated by the WBC, have volunteered to that program, and many of them have been tested by VADA, and this is throughout the year." In order to clarify just what VADA does and does not do, she explained that VADA carries out the drug testing, but has no role in adjudicating the test results, such as determining if there are or what suspensions fighters receive, etc. We also discussed the need for standardization of drug testing, how anti-doping programs have become more and more accepted over the years, the issue of weight-cutting, the problems with supplements, and much, much more. In episode #116 of The Neutral Corner, Michael Montero talks about Canelo Alvarez being temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, reviews wins by Ryan Garcia, Tyron Zeuge and Dillian Whyte, then previews the entire card headlined by Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker unifying their heavyweight titles in Cardiff, Wales Saturday. Tobin recaps Dillian Whyte's vicious knockout win over Lucas "Big Daddy" Browne. Whyte calls out Deontay Wilder following the win and his promoter, Eddie Hearn follows that cry. Hearn, who also promotes Anthony Joshua, wants Wilder to fight Whyte first in June before getting a crack at AJ. Joshua will defend his belt next week against Joseph Parker. Does Deontay Wilder really need to prove himself again before getting a crack at the undisputed heavyweight title? Canelo Alvarez gets "temporarily" suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. What does that even mean? Who is NSAC trying to please here? How shocking would it be if they actually called off the GGG rematch, three weeks out from fight night? Dana White is reportedly going to make a big push to sign away Anthony Joshua from Matchroom Boxing. Tobin recaps a fun night of fights at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, #RumbleAtTheRock. This is another in a series of discussions celebrating the tenth anniversary of this No Holds Barred podcast, which began in March 2006. These interviews will focus both on the legacy and issues raised over the years on this show, as well as contemporary issues and the future of the combat sports and martial arts. We spoke with Dr. Margaret Goodman by phone Monday. There is hardly a day without a report, discussion, or analysis of doping in sports. Even a decade ago, this was not the case, particularly in the combat and contact sports. Yet today, issues like doping, as well as athlete safety, brain trauma, and CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), regularly appear in the headlines and are the main topics in the news and on discussion shows. It has taken time for public awareness of these issues and the crises for sport they entail to grow to a critical mass, but that is where we are today. "I think that public awareness, and the public, the fans that watch these sports, asking questions, demanding answers to those questions, keeping on top of the sports, and even with the athletic commissions and the media asking questions, I think changes do come," said Dr. Goodman. "The public is more and more aware of this," she said, and urged, "I think that it's really important for the average boxing fan and MMA fan to ask questions, to find out as much information as they can." More and more transparency on these issues and more and more people asking questions, she said, "this is what really will evoke changes." We discussed many specific issues, including that of the many suspensions of athletes for using the banned substance meldonium; why many of these suspensions have now been lifted; drug-testing in MMA including the UFC-USADA program; the World Boxing Council (WBC) working directly with VADA on testing fighters and the WBC Clean Boxing Program; the growing list of top-rated boxers who are part of VADA's anti-doping program; the lack of uniformity in drug and medical testing of fighters, both around the U.S. and the world; Bellator MMA's booking of Kimbo Slice for a fight in the U.K. right after he tested positive for using a steroid from his February fight and was suspended for three months and had his fighter's license revoked by the Texas commission; the dangers of brain injuries in. and the relative safety of, boxing and MMA; whether or not bare knuckle boxing can be safer than boxing with gloves; the ethics of watching and covering such dangerous sports as boxing and MMA; the need for a national commission for boxing and MMA, for MMA to be included in the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, and for international regulation of these sports; the importance of the recent film "Concussion" about Dr. Bennet Omalu; how repeated sub-concussive blows to the head must be examined and not just full concussions; an upcoming WBC webinar; and much, much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with lifelong martial artist, former UFC and Battlecade Extreme Fighting matchmaker, TV commentator, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti. Our focus was the untimely passing of the two-time NCAA wrestling champion and former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman, who passed away February 11 at the age of 44. John Perretti was the UFC matchmaker for most of his fights there and during his title reign. We spoke with John Perretti Tuesday Japan time (Monday New York time). It is important to examine what we know and what lessons can be drawn from this sad event so we can try to avoid future such tragedies. While we mourn Kevin Randleman's death and celebrate his life, we also must try to get to the truth. But the details of his passing, and exactly how and why it happened now, are still not completely known. News reports about it have been vague, without clear sources, and even contradictory. But we do know how he lived, and the dangers that posed for him. "He was a specimen, but he would have been on my top ten list of guys to go early," John Perretti said. "He burned twice as bright, so to speak. "Also, I don't know what he was doing as of late, but guys of that kind of physicality have a short half-life. And I'm not sure where he was mentally, and I can't speculate on that. I know how difficult it can be to age, although he was only 44." But, he added, when he heard the news of his sudden passing, "I wasn't at all shocked." We discussed the many health problems Kevin Randleman faced, including battles against staph infections, as well as being suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in 2007 for providing a fake urine sample for a drug test. For many years in MMA, John Perretti said, use of performance-enhancing and other drugs was rampant. "Conservatively, 85 percent of all fighters during my time period and prior were on drugs," he said. "Not just fooling around drugs, but performance-enhancement drugs. And I know a lot of the dealers who dealt, who were also fighters, personally. So I know the list, and I know from personal exposure, that, I would say that 50 percent of the guys that I dealt with, I've seen them using performance-enhancement drugs. This was a situation that was normal, and this was a situation that was prevalent." While we still need more information as to why Kevin Randleman passed, we were able to discuss more generally the issue of safety in MMA. From the birth of modern MMA in North America in the 1990s, many people argued for the sport's legalization and recognition as being legitimate by saying that it was safer than established sports including boxing and even American football, and thus should also be legalized. That was true in those days, said John Perretti, but today it is "not so," and we discussed why. Still, what role these factors played in the death of Kevin Randleman, if any, is not yet known. We also discussed some highlights of Kevin Randleman's career including his excellence in college wrestling and controversial loss to Bas Rutten in UFC, the growing awareness of the perils of head trauma and concussions in sports, and much, much more. E. Spencer Kyte and Duane Finley dive into the Nick Diaz saga in the wake of the Nevada State Athletic Commission handing the popular welterweight a five-year suspension on Monday.
Breaking news into the Co-Main Event Podcast just as the show goes on the air this week, and Ben and Chad offer up some instant reaction to the Nevada State Athletic Commission handing Nick Diaz a five year ban for marijuana on Monday. Or maybe the extra-stiff punishment came because Diaz had the audacity to try to show up and actually defend himself? How's that for some discourse? In addition to that, Bellator MMA takes front and center as its four-man, one night light heavyweight tournament goes down on Saturday. Who will win and what kind of No. 1 contender will they be for the victor of Liam McGeary's title defense against Tito Ortiz the same night? Only time (and the CME) will tell. Your dudes also look into troubling reports about the UFC's new drug testing partner and what that might mean for the fight company's new in-house testing program. All that. plus Just Sayin' Stuff, AYFKM and Master Tweet Theatre.

In classic Co-Main Event fashion, the new podcast smell hadn't even worn off last week's episode before UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones tested positive for that candy cane. You know, that gutter glitter? That paradise white? Anyhoo, Ben and Chad weren't going to let an opportunity like that go by without busting out their best Scarface jokes. Their best Boogie Nights jokes. Their best New Jack City jokes. Especially after the Nevada State Athletic Commission spent the next week playing the Gee Money to Jones' Nino Brown. Oh yeah, there is also another event of mixed rules fighting happening this weekend, when Conor McGregor takes on Dennis Siver and Donald Cerrone steps in on--what else--short notice to fight Benson Henderson. All that, plus Just Sayin' Stuff and AYFKM.

For a state worker, Keith Kizer has one of the more interesting jobs in the world. In one of the state’s largest assets, Kizer operates with a small staff of five in a nook of a large building and works out of a small office unrecognizable to the popular media image of what many think the NSAC is. Kizer, along with five NSAC commissioners, is in charge of overseeing the licensing, sanctioning and officiating of Nevada’s unarmed combat matches – kickboxing, mixed martial arts, and boxing. Not that it doesn’t come without controversy and what he considers slander when the NSAC’s integrity is questions, as Kizer mentions in the podcast. Kizer talks about the role of the NSAC, how its brand is extensive enough that those outside Nevada confuse the commission’s role in worldwide unarmed combat sports affairs. Kizer covers some of the hotter topics surrounding the NSAC, including Fallon Fox, Testosterone Replacement Therapy, health & wellness of fighters, controversial judging decisions such as the Hendricks v GSP fight as well as the extensive social media aftermath.
