Christians must be ready — in season and out of season — to speak the truth. We are not Christians only some of the time, and Christianity, unlike Islam, has no provision for dissimulation — you may not feign to be something other than Christian for the sake of convenience or even safety. Even at risk of life or limb or honor, the Christian must boldly proclaim Christ and Him crucified. This duty to speak the truth pertains not only to matters of the Christian religion, but also to all other matters. It is not the (perhaps uncharitable formulation of the) Kantian conception of truth — that one must never tell a falsehood of any kind —, but rather a duty to speak the truth when and where the truth is demanded. For instance, the 8th Commandment prohibits us from bearing false witness against our neighbor, and this duty does not terminate upon that neighbor's death. The Christian is a Christian at all times and in all things. As Christians, we are to forgive our personal enemies (inimicus), but this does not mean that we have no political or religious enemies (hostis) — for those who are enemies of God are enemies of all Christians. It is the duty, in fact, of Christians to oppose the enemies of God and His Church. And so, in today's episode, we continue our series on the Jews. Subscribe to the podcast here. The book The Tribunal of Zaragoza and Crypto-Judaism 1484-1515 sheds light into the histographical proof of the Crypto-Jewish experience of certain individuals summoned by the Inquisition in the 15th Century. During that time period the inquisitorial tribunal tried and prosecuted countless “Catholic” heretics for the crime of Judaizing. Ms. D'Abrera profound understanding of the subject exposes the social and political issues connected with this crucial part of Jewish history as well as the controversies that are part of this academic field. In page 172 she defines their negative belief system which is seen by the Inquisition as heresy, according to the 1484 Valencian Edict of Grace: “… if you have believed, taught or said you believe something against the Catholic faith or if you know anyone who has blasphemed. “Ms. D'Abrera not only addresses how the Inquisition persecuted the anusim systematically, but her research adds important facts to the limited resources on this subject. Her scholarly approach documents and explains the sources thoroughly corroborating her findings. The book exposes the Inquisition record, and lets it speak for itself something other scholars fail to do in many cases. She addresses many important issues not dealt with by other scholars, such as Ben Zion Netanyahu, Norman Roth and Henry Kamen. They view Conversos not as Crypto-Jews, but as sincere Catholics who were falsely accused of practicing Judaism due to their Jewish lineage. On the other hand Haim Beinart and Fritz Baer, using multiple sources, portray them show Crypto-Jews as Jewish martyrs who died honoring Torah. D'Abreira is part of the new generation of scholars who study the Inquisition records to find clues which point to a real Crypto-Jewish community. These findings are not based on a preconceived agenda, but build a case based on the historical evidence. She writes”…the inquisitors' questions and conduct throughout the trials indicate that they were far more interested in the religious behavior of the defendant after he or she had been received into the Church, rather than presuming to judge whether the conversion had been genuine or not.” (P. 51)AdvertisementsREPORT THIS ADShe also contends with contemporary scholars such as Henry Kamen who “believes that the inquisitors possessed minimal understanding of Jewish religious practices” and were not able to adequately document Jewish practice, something she shows to be contrary to the available evidence (P.57) The inquisitors posessed books such as Directorioum inquisitorioum, which assisted them in being able to distinguish Jewish practices from false accusations during their trial by Christian Anti-Semites from the community who resented the conversos (P.57-58)D'Abrera's conclusions are that the anusim in Christian Spain, specifically Zaragoza experienced in captivity to an alien creed many challenges, an that the doubt raised by some scholars of their historical legitimacy is driven by their own philosophical perspectives.  To her Benzion Netanyahu's elaborate theory not only undermines their Jewish practices as real but gives the inquisitors the power to falsify their testimonies for political purposes. This challenges the existence of sincere Crypto-Jews and builds a case against their halachic status. Netanyahu bases his arguments on the negative view toward Crypto-Jews by some Posekim of that time. The Rabbis (either in either exile or from other communities not affected by the persecution) saw them as meshumadim (willing converts) rather than anusim (forced ones). They were not able to fathom that Jews would partake in Christian idolatry and embrace the supersessionist theologies of the Catholic Church. D'Abrera shows how in Valencia in 1484 the inquisitors “received substantial assistance from Jewish communities , some of which may have been particularly antagonistic toward the conversos, whom they saw as traitors.” (P.

In this week's show the topic is Maimonides on Crypto-Judaism. This presentation took place in 2010 in San Antonio during the 20th Annual Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies Conference. I presented on this subject to discover some insights on the halachic (Jewish legal) status of Crypto-Jews. I explored the writings of the halakhic master Maimonides, one of his works Iggeret ha-Shemad (Letter on Martyrdom) stands out regarding his perspective on the Anusim of his time. Maimonides writes: “Now if he did not surrender himself to death but transgressed under duress and did not die, he did not act properly and under compulsion he profaned G-d's name. However, he is not to be punished by any of the seven means of retribution. Not a single instance is found in the Torah in which a forced individual is sentenced to any of the punishments, whether the transgression was light or grave. Only he who acts voluntarily is subject as Scripture directs: "But the person…who acts defiantly…that soul shall be cut off" (Numbers 15:30). This Epistle to the Moroccan Jewish community of the 12th century deals with their forced conversions to Islam; as compared to the modern day Anusim who are the descendants of those who were forced to convert to Catholicism. This letter is a response to an unidentified rabbi who wrote to the Jews of Morocco condemning them as heretics. At the time of this presentation there was one contemporary scholar of religious law who agreed with the 12th Century rabbi and considers the Rambam's letter a fiasco. Haym Soloveitchik, believed the letter written by Maimonides contradicted the Mishnah Torah and has a “flimsy position and (a) make shift” argument. This letter and it's critique are relevant to the debate of Modern-day Conversos or Anusim. As there are two prevalent views regarding this issue either in their Muslim or Christian forms. On one side the Jewish community helps them achieve repentance as expressed by the Rambam. And on the other condemns them as Soloveitchik clearly indicates in his critique of the Rambam's letter.

D. A. 20 reasons to abandon Christianity part 1 (Reasons 1-7)

“6. Christianity breeds authoritarianism. Given that Christians claim to have the one true faith, to have a book that is the Word of God, and (in many cases) to receive guidance directly from God, they feel little or no compunction about using force and coercion to enforce "God's Will" (which they, of course, interpret and understand). Given that they believe (or pretend) that they're receiving orders from the Almighty (who would cast them into hell should they disobey), it's little wonder that they feel no reluctance, and in fact are eager, to intrude into the most personal aspects of the lives of nonbelievers. This is most obvious today in the area of sex, with Christians attempting to deny women the right to abortion and to mandate near-useless abstinence-only sex "education" in the public schools. It's also obvious in the area of education, with Christians attempting to force biology teachers to teach their creation myth (but not those of Hindus, Native Americans, et al.) in place of (or as being equally valid as) the very well established theory of evolution. But the authoritarian tendencies of Christianity reach much further than this. Up until well into the 20th century in the United States and other Christian countries (notably Ireland), Christian churches pressured governments into passing laws forbidding the sale and distribution of birth control devices, and they also managed to enact laws forbidding even the description of birth control devices. This assault on free speech was part and parcel of Christianity's shameful history of attempting to suppress "indecent" and "subversive" materials (and to throw their producers in jail or burn them alive). This anti-free speech stance of Christianity dates back centuries, with the cases of Galileo Galilei and Giordano Bruno (who was burnt alive) being good illustrations of it. Perhaps the most colorful example of this intrusive Christian tendency toward censorship is the Catholic Church's Index of Prohibited Books, which dates from the 16th century and which was abandoned only in the latter part of the 20th century—not because the church recognized it as a crime against human freedom, but because it could no longer be enforced (not that it was ever systematically enforced—that was too big a job even for the Inquisition). Christian authoritarianism extends, however, far beyond attempts to suppress free speech; it extends even to attempts to suppress freedom of belief. In the 15th century, under Ferdinand and Isabella at about the time of Columbus's discovery of the New World, Spain's Jews were ordered either to convert to Christianity or to flee the country; about half chose exile, while those who remained, the "Conversos," were favorite targets of the Inquisition. A few years later, Spain's Muslims were forced to make a similar choice. This Christian hatred of freedom of belief—and of individual freedom in general—extends to this day. Up until the late 19th century in England, atheists who had the temerity to openly advocate their beliefs were jailed. Even today in many parts of the United States laws still exist that forbid atheists from serving on juries or from holding public office. And it's no mystery what the driving force is behind laws against victimless "crimes" such as nudity, sodomy, fornication, cohabitation, and prostitution. If your nonintrusive beliefs or actions are not in accord with Christian "morality," you can bet that Christians will feel completely justified—not to mention righteous—in poking their noses (often in the form of state police agencies) into your private life.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

V.E.H. Masters was born and grew up on a farm just outside St. Andrews, Scotland. She's been fascinated by the 1546 siege of St Andrews Castle, ever since her history teacher took the class on a visit, which included going down the siege tunnel dug out of rock and peering into the bottle dungeon where the infamous Cardinal Beaton's body is said to have been kept, pickled in salt, for over a year. When she learned that the group who took the castle, and held it for over 14 months, resisting the many attempts to re-take it, called themselves the Castilians, she knew even then, at age 12, that it was the perfect title for the story, and she had a sixth sense she might write it one day. Following the Edict of Expulsion in 1290, no organized Jewish life existed in England for centuries. Following the Spanish Expulsion in 1492, a few Conversos secretly settled in England under a Christian identity. The official resettlement of Jews in England commenced with the negotiations held between Menashe ben Israel and Oliver Cromwell in the 1650's. Though allowed to unofficially resettle in England, full emancipation wasn't achieved until 1858. Prominent Jews of the 19th century included the Rothschild family, Moses Montefiore and Benjamin Disreali, who though born Jewish, was baptized at the age of 12. The Sephardic community of London achieved prominence and influence with the founding of the Bevis Marks Synagogue, the longest continuously in use synagogue in Europe. An early prominent rabbi was Hacham David Nieto. The Ashkenazi community built the Great Synagogue of London.   Listen to Part I here: https://jsoundbites.podbean.com/e/british-royals-baalei-tosfos-blood-libels-the-story-of-london-part-i/     For sponsorship opportunities about your favorite topics of Jewish history contact Yehuda at:  yehuda@yehudageberer.com   Subscribe To Our Podcast on:    PodBean: https://jsoundbites.podbean.com/   Follow us on Twitter or Instagram at @Jsoundbites You can email Yehuda at yehuda@yehudageberer.com

When one thinks of the Caribbean, typically he/she would think of a region of African descendants, and of course, European settlers who colonized the region in the late 15th century. The history of the Jews in Latin America began with Conversos who joined the Spanish and Portuguese expeditions to the continents. By the late 16th century, fully functioning Jewish communities were founded in the Portuguese colony of Brazil, the Dutch Suriname, and Curacao; Spanish Santo Domingo, and the English colonies of Jamaica and Barbados. To discuss the history of Jews in in the Caribbean, and share his own rich Jamaican Jewish family history, I am joined by Ainsley Henriques, a Jamaican Jew and Administrator of Kahal Kadosh Sha'are Shalom, also referred to as the United Congregation of Israelites, in Kingston, Jamaica. Ainsley Henriques is also Israel’s Honorary Consul in Jamaica.Disclaimer: The opinions expressed herein are our own and do not represent those of any other entity.

It was a delight to catch up with Kevin Ingram, professor of history at Saint Louis University, Madrid, to discuss his very impressive new book. Converso Non-Conformism in Early Modern Spain: Bad Blood and Faith from Alonso de Cartagena to Diego Velázquez (Palgrave, 2018) sets out to account for the experience of those Spanish Jews, perhaps one-third of the total Spanish Jewish population, who converted to Catholicism after the Reconquista. Professor Ingram's work shows how these converts struggled to assimilate into mainstream Spanish society, and how laws were passed to ensure that only those who could demonstrate “pure blood” could enter the highest echelons of Spanish life. But conversos found other ways to participate in community, identifying with the cause of virtue that was popularised in Renaissance humanism, developing new mystical strains of religious practice, and participating in the many competing agendas for religious reform. Conversos exercised a much greater influence on the Spanish golden age than a great deal of historical writing has noticed. An outstanding study of its subject, Converso Non-Conformism in Early Modern Spain looks to be advancing an agenda-setting argument. Crawford Gribben is a professor of history at Queen's University Belfast. His research interests focus on the history of puritanism and evangelicalism, and he is the author most recently of John Owen and English Puritanism (Oxford University Press, 2016). Professor Ingram’s work shows how these converts struggled to assimilate into mainstream Spanish society, and how laws were passed to ensure that only those who could demonstrate “pure blood” could enter the highest echelons of Spanish life. Crawford Gribben is a professor of history at Queen’s University Belfast. His research interests focus on the history of puritanism and evangelicalism, and he is the author most recently of John Owen and English Puritanism (Oxford University Press, 2016). Maimonides on Crypto-Judaism

In this week’s show the topic is Maimonides on Crypto-Judaism. Maimonides writes: “Now if he did not surrender himself to death but transgressed under duress and did not die, he did not act properly and under compulsion he profaned G-d’s name. At the time of this presentation there was one contemporary scholar of religious law who agreed with the 12th Century rabbi and considers the Rambam’s letter a fiasco. Haym Soloveitchik, believed the letter written by Maimonides contradicted the Mishnah Torah and has a “flimsy position and (a) make shift” argument. This letter and it’s critique are relevant to the debate of Modern-day Conversos or Anusim. As there are two prevalent views regarding this issue either in their Muslim or Christian forms. On one side the Jewish community helps them achieve repentance as expressed by the Rambam. And on the other condemns them as Soloveitchik clearly indicates in his critique of the Rambam’s letter.

He is a rabbi who received ordination from Yeshiva Mesilat Yesharim. He lives in Dallas and is a researcher in Spanish Jewish history. He is the author of Secret Jews: The Complex Identity of Crypto-Jews and Crypto-Judaism. As part two of our exploration of the surviving Jewish communities in Latin America which have encountered much the religious persecution, since their massive exodus from Spain. Dr. Bejarano Gutierrez book describes the struggles of the Anusim or Conversos (forced converts) and shows through historical sources that these converts and their children were, more often than not, treated as Jews by the rabbis of that period. This book shows, through the well researched sources, that the current tendency of some authorities to reject the descendants of the Anusim is more driven by political reasons rather than based on religious, legal or historical precedence. Dr. Bejarano Gutierrez is also the founder of Benei Anusim Center for Education which provides opportunities for the descendants of Crypto-Jews in our day.

In this week’s show our guest is David Ramírez, a former Counselor to the Board of Directors for Congregation Ess Hayim – the Spanish and Portuguese Jews of Houston. He is an independent researcher on Sephardic history and currently lives in Mexico. Our topic is the surviving Jewish communities in Latin America which have encountered much the religious persecution, since their massive exodus from Spain. There was a thriving Jewish community in Iberian Peninsula for centuries. The time period we discuss started in the 14th century as Jews were forcibly baptized bringing about the phenomenon where they practiced Judaism underground. The descendants of these Spanish-Portuguese Jews in Latin America have been returning to the greater Jewish community for centuries. However, this process has been a difficult one due to how some groups being more insular than others. In Jewish law the term “Anusim” is applied to these forced converts, whether of Spain, Portugal, Persia, Hungary, or elsewhere, and to their descendants. Although the original forced converts and their children should be treated as Jews; there has been a tendency by some authorities to reject them. Many Hispanics whose families are aware of Jewish descent and who wish to be accepted as part of a normative Jewish community face difficulties. Without conversion or formal return, they often find themselves marginalized in the synagogue or temple, unable to marry in the synagogue, or unable to settle permanently in Israel. David M. Gitlitz in his 1996 book Secrecy and Deceit demonstrates that conversos in Spain, Portugal, and the New Spain continued to uphold the Jewish Law, practices, and traditions held by their forefathers well after and during the inquisitions. They also formed communities, holding services in homes of Old Christians who were sympathetic to Jews, and having their own leaders and prayer books. Spanish Jewish Religious Philosopher Moses Maimonides wrote in the 12th century the following regarding Anusim: “How can God not reward a Jew who has been coerced by force of persecution yet secretly performs some commandments? … One who transgresses under duress is not called a sinner, nor wicked, nor is he disqualified…. It is improper to reject those who desanctify the Sabbath or to despise them, rather one should welcome them and encourage them…. Even a voluntary sinner who comes to the synagogue to pray is accepted and is not to be insulted.” There is a growing number of rabbis that support the reintegration of the Anusim such as Conservative Rabbi David Kunin, Joseph Garcia who was commissioned by the Renewal movement and has found backing from some Conservative rabbis, while others that are friendly toward Anusim such as Cuban American Orthodox rabbi Manny Vinas. Many scholars have tacked this issue before such as Ben Zion Netanyahu, Norman Roth and Henry Kamen. They view Conversos not as secret Jews, but as sincere Catholics who were falsely accused of practicing Judaism due to their Jewish lineage. On the other hand, Haim Beinart and Yitzhak Baer, show from multiple historical sources that many Crypto-Jews were willing to be martyred to honor Jewish tradition, some where just trying to survive and others were syncretistic in their beliefs. According to an article by Ashley Perry: “Almost every Jewish tradition has been kept somewhere by some family of Bnei Anusim. There are amulets that have been passed down from generation to generation that contain the mezuza scroll. There are women who go to a dark room every Friday at dusk to light candles in a bowl of water; the water was so that in case the inquisitors would arrive, they could quickly extinguish the flames. This is done to this very day, and many times without even their closest family ever becoming aware of this ritual, until it is time to explain it to the eldest daughter.” (Kol Nidre and the Bnei Anusim)

The Bizzle and Yarehk take on one of the biggest and most difficult issues of our time: Race. What is "Race"? Yarehk and Biz discuss the historical, etymological, and performative roots of "race" and "racism." Is it real or imagined? Is academia helping or hurting our desire to move beyond race? Starting in Spain, where proto-racism developed through the persecution of the Moriscos and Conversos (converted Muslims and Jews) by the Church but was carried into New World imperialism, informing racialist notions as applied to indigenous Americans as well as the African slaves who were forcibly brought there. It’s a touchy subject but we deal with it as objectively as possible. The debate includes questions about the etymological basis of “race” and whether we can apply modern notions of identity formation to historical cultures and societies.
