As an actor and filmmaker, Onur Tukel challenges the audience to delve into the frightening parts of who they are by, at times, leading them to live vicariously through his protagonists' colorful experiences. From exploring the joy of mortality in Drawing Blood, to the perils of masculinity in 2001's Ding-a-ling-Less, to a platonic theme of friendship amidst a romantic undertone in Richard's Wedding, the loss of one's identity among the backdrop of a physical manifestation of revenge in Catfight, and apathy transforming into adventure after an encounter with a vampire in Summer of Blood, which also features friend and contemporary Alex Karpovsky, Onur's films are like shining a mirror towards the more intimate and carnal senses. We learn about the power of perspective and its impact on perception in The Misogynists, which features Dylan Baker; psychotic longing for the one that got away in That Cold Dead Look in Your Eyes, which is shot near-exclusively in French; and the connectedness of spirituality during the Pandemic in Scenes from an Empty Church, which stars Kevin Corrigan. His latest projects include the novel Run Werewolf Run, which he authored and illustrated, and will be released in 2025 by Pitchstone Publishing (ironically based in Durham, NC); and a puppet film he directed about a marionette performer which wrapped in 2024. In our conversation, we discussed his collaborations with several actors, including Anne Heche, Sandra Oh, Ariel Kavoussi and Josephine Decker; growing up in North Carolina; the unveiling of psychotherapy's purpose in a cinematic endeavor; and the filmmakers who affected and inspired the origins of cinema in his eyes.Opening Credits: Anitek - Strange Sensations I CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US; Jangwa - Slow Me Down I CC BY 4.0. The final Mark Darby Robinson performance in a film is here, in "Septien". What is "Septien"? Well, three middle-aged brothers are complete emotional messes and when one returns to the fold, things get bonkers. Michael Tully directed and wrote this along with Onur Tukel and Robert Longstreet. If you were a lil IFC dork like me and Jules, this is gonna be your jam. Get ready for odd, sad, funny with "Septien".

For our new run, I ask you "Have you ever heard of Mark Darby Robinson?" Your answer should almost certainly be no, unless you happened to live in Wilmington, NC and would see him wandering everywhere 20 years ago. The Darb-ster is someone we came across in "Ding-a-ling-Less", an Onur Tukel film we covered in the Robert Longstreet run. He plays the dick doctor and rattles off some pretty amazing dialog in his few scenes. We ended up seeing two more of his movies in that batch and the dude just pops. Much like Eddie Rouse in "Low and Behold", I said "We really need to cover him at some point." So here we are. Kicking off this one with a few short films. We're re-releasing the Longstreet episodes so all the Mark stuff is in a row and then we end on a documentary that Billy Lewis (who did "4th and Long" and "The Jailhouse") made about his always game friend and actor. Buckle up, this is a wild ride. Feel free to tell all your friends, sing songs about us, or even rate and review us on Apple podcasts so we can cover a movie of your choosing.

We watched the very American black comedy Catfight (2016), written and directed by Onur Tukel and starring Sandra Oh and Anne Heche. And, man, does this movie pack a punch (pause for laughter.) Haley falls more in love with Sandra Oh, and Claire tries to unpack this movie's worldview.Content warning for discussions of war and violence.Producers Note: If you think you would be frustrated by two Gen Z'ers, who had difficulty remembering that this movie  was actually reacting to the 2003 Iraq War (that they were too young to be cognizant of in terms of socio-cultural reactions) and not the time it was made in, talk about American entitlement and attitudes towards war and the military broadly, maybe skip this one. Dylan Baker is the definition of a consummate actor. For over three decades he has delivered so many incredible performances in series like “The Good Wife,” “Damages,” “Hunters,” films like “Happiness,” “Selma,” “Spider-Man 2”, and his latest, “LaRoy, Texas”, where he plays a professional killer. He talks about his approach toward playing despicable people, some who other actor's wouldn't touch. He takes us back to his beginnings, and the acting instruction that changed his work and which he still uses today. He tells a story about how the legendary theater director Nikos Psacharopoulos had a big impact on his early career,  talks about the excitement of working on ultra independent films like Onur Tukel's “The Misogynists,” explains why minimal direction works so powerfully for him, gives us a run down of his pre-curtain ritual, and much much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from  Filmmaker Magazine. Onur Tukel is a boldly independent writer-director-actor who, for more than a decade, has been making cutting edge comedies in New York City that sometimes land in the horror category, sometimes social satire, are often absurd, mostly hilarious, and always thoughtful—“Catfight,” “Applesauce,” “Summer of Blood,” “The Misogynists,” “Scenes From An Empty Church,” to name just a few. His latest, “Poundcake,” about a serial killer who only targets straight white men, is maybe his boldest yet, which says a lot. In this hour, he talks about his reluctant approach toward acting in his own films, the ways he has navigated low budget indie film production consistently enough to make a film every year, what rejuvenated his excitement for making movies after almost quitting, why he won't stop taking big storytelling risks, and much more! Top Boy seasons are a little confusing, but let me break it down for you. If you're watching on Netflix you'll see Top Boy as Season 1 & 2, but if you're looking on IMDB, you will see four seasons of Top Boy. The reason for this is the original seasons have been retitled Top Boy: Summer House (2 seasons), also on Netflix in NZ. They're a little older. Then Drake, yes the rapper, came along and was like, bruv. I've got the P's, let's get this back on the air. Welcome to another great episode..In this one we talk to actor Max Casella. Max has had a long and interesting career, and chats with us about his path to his current project in this entertaining albeit shorter episode. He talks about his somewhat, by some standards, unconventional upbringing, learning the ropes at an off Broadway theater, landing the role of Vinnie on Doogie Howser, and a long list of other topics. Max has an impressive list of acting and voice credits in his resume, including plays, TV, film, animation, and even computer games. He has worked with a virtual who's who in the acting world during his career, has appeared in many easily recognizable films and tv shows. His current film, directed by Onur Tukel, is titled “Tes Yeux Mourants/That Cold Dead Look in Your Eyes”, which was recently released. In interviewing our guests, sometimes we get really different and interesting backstories that veer off the norm. As you will see in Max's story, he grew up with parents who were somewhat unconventional. This isn't an advantage or disadvantage, but it is certainly not how we imagined it to be when we started the interview. To his credit, Max is very, for lack of a better term, real, and we really enjoyed talking to him and getting his unique perspectives on things. There is some profanity in this interview, but he doesn't sound different than the people Matt has known from his time living in and around NYC for whom using profanity is elevated to an art form.  It was a pleasure speaking with Max, and we truly hope to revisit our conversation with him at a later date.

His most recent film is Scenes From an Empty Church, starring Kevin Corrigan and Thomas Jay Ryan, Max Casella, and Paul Reiser.  What you will learn: The hustle required to be an indie filmmaker, and the uncertainty that comes with the job, even with numerous successful projects under his belt. How he is able to incorporate taboo or controversial themes in his films and still find funding. Why he prefers New York over L.A., despite potentially missing out on career and film opportunities in L.A.. [0:00-15:21] What it was like growing up in North Carolina as the son of Turkish immigrants, making movies with friends and eventually creating his first independent film, House of Pancakes, at age 24. The faith he had in his 2001 film Ding-a-ling-Less, and the harsh lessons learned about the film world when it was shelved. Onur discusses his eclectic filmography and the challenge of finding audiences for all of his work. [15:21-28:49] Talking shop, Onur reveals his camera preferences and style of filming. What it was like to film Scenes From an Empty Church with quarantine restrictions, what inspired him to make a pandemic-centered movie in the middle of pandemic, and why the film was a conscious shift from his previous style of work. [28:49-48:07] Onur reveals plans for his next film project, an absurdist horror/comedy, and touches on the deeper aspects of why he is compelled to express himself creatively. How he is able to be so prolific creatively in times of darkness, when other creatives tend to shut down and experience writer's block. How invaluable having a creative partner (or benevolent competitor) can be, and how sadness can serve as fuel for art. [48:07-1:00:16] How his personal views and perspectives are reflected in his work. How Onur worked to make Scenes From an Empty Church a film that anyone, regardless of religious belief, can enjoy and find common ground with the collective trauma caused by the pandemic. How Onur weaved themes of the soul and the afterlife into the film. [1:00:16-1:16:27] Onur gets candid about his writing process, his struggles, and the creative tools he has gathered over the years. His perspective on the importance of geographic location as it relates to success in the film industry. Onur also provides creative advice for aspiring filmmakers. [1:16:27-1:31:42] The story behind Onur's infamous appearances on Doug Benson's podcast, what led him to being kicked off of that podcast (twice), and the lessons he learned from those experiences. It’s become a tradition to have actor’s actor Kevin Corrigan on the show every year. This is his third visit (his first two episodes are #1 an #67). Sitting down with the wise sage of indie film always ends up being both a reset and recharge. He has a way of speaking about this art that helps bring us back to the root of what it’s all about: connection, empathy, being alive. In this hour, he tells us about a life-changing event that happened right after wrapping work on the Showtime series “Ray Donovan,” and how the effects reverberate throughout his dealing with the pandemic. We talk about a scene in “The Godfather Part II,” and try to wrap our arms around the brilliant work of the young actor Jack Dylan Grazer, star of “We Are Who We Are.” I ask him about working on “The Exorcist III” thirty years ago, and Onur Tukel’s latest film this past Summer. As always, there are Brando quotes, plus much, MUCH more.

In 2017, Ariel acted opposite Anne Heche, Sandra Oh, & Dylan Baker in Onur Tukel's dark comedic feature CATFIGHT (Toronto International Film Festival). Numerous critics have lauded her performance; Vanity Fair singled Ariel Kavoussi out as Hilarious Newcomer for her work, as did Variety. I first took note of Ariel Kavoussi’s singular comedic talent in Onur Tukel’s “Applesauce” and then “Catfight,” where she hilariously played Ann Heche’s assistant and stole every scene she was in. She performed a similar theft this past year on the Netflix series “Maniac,” opposite Emma Stone. She also writes and directs her own work. Her new short film “The Poet and The Professor” was called a "truly absurdist, provocative, and contemporary feminist film” by Indiewire. We talk about the origins of her approach to comedy, how she works the audition rooms she suddenly finds herself in, and her relationship to her own unique speaking voice. Plus much more!

Fantastic Fest is over, and while I didn't go, I poked around the edges of the Harry Knowles controversy, earning me a block on Twitter from Scott Weinberg of 80s All Over podcast, which is funny as hell. Their podcast is good! Listen to it! The story is on the podcast and it digs into Harry Knowles (formerly) of Ain't It Cool News, Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Film and Scott the egghead whiner. Twitter rules! Movies I watched! mother! (2017) -it sucks in so many ways but rules in so many others, go see it! Three women fled the theater and I laughed my ass off throughout it! Funny movie about trauma, and life dogpiling on you. Bleak Street (2015) - Mexican surreal true-crime story about dwarf twin wrestlers who get murdered, and the black-and-white oddity leading up to it. Fans of Hard To Be a God are sure to love it! Gerald's Game (2017) - MORE STEPHEN KING! On Netflix! I didn't like it! Baskin (2015) - Netflix Turkish horror about scumbag cops who get it good by Lovecraftian terror cults living in a Resident Evil mansion! This shit ruled! Watch it! Brainstorm (1983) - skip Flatliners 2017 and just pick this up at your local videomart. Christopher Walken does science for the sake of learning, and nothing will stop him from experiencing a colleague's death caught on a psychic recording machine! This movie ruled! A Dark Song (2016) - Netflix supernatural drama-horror about a mom hellbent on asking for God's aid in killing her son's murderers, but the price is high: a year in a big manse with a bald working class occultist locked from the outside world and trying fiendishly to invoke an avenging angel! Was good! Watch it! Catfight (2016) Onur Tukel's last feature boasts sharp dialogue, good gay humor, woman-on-woman coma-inducing battery (x2!) and other remarks on the insipid, futile world we occupy! Good shit! WAY better than Summer of Blood, which you can safely skip! lol forgot about Chloe (2009) - awful Egoyan film but lush and full of juicy lesbian / masturbation shots of beautiful Julianne More and the voluptuous Amanda Seyfried, who's no stranger to lesbian shots (2009's Jennifer's Body with Megan Fox for a long makeout scene). So watch it for any reason you want, or skip it. It's a bad movie. But it's got some great scenes. The conflict! The debate! Damn you Egoyan. I'm on a roll baby.

This week, we’re kicking off our SXSW coverage on a particularly high note. That’s because this interview features arguably the best voice we’ve ever had on the podcast in Nick Offerman, and also one of the best laughs we’ve ever had on the show in actress Trieste Kelly Dunn. They are joined by acclaimed indie director Bob Byington to discuss the creation of Infinity Baby, a film that premiered to uproarious laughter at the festival last week. The film is a convergence of three separate narratives surrounding a corporation that sells a highly unusual product: babies that never age. So while Byington may have made a name for himself with naturalistic movies like 7 Chinese Brothers, the surrealistic elements of Infinity Baby’s plot act as a springboard to the intricate dialogue of screenwriter Onur Tukel and grounded performances from Offerman, Kelly Dunn and the rest of the cast. We talk about how script supervising may be the best training ground for directors, how Nick Offerman overcame being a "sucky actor," and how sometimes if you want to get your break in Hollywood, all you have to do is make sure you have fresh laundry.

Our key film this week is the expertly awkward comedy "Donald Cried" about a Wall Street banker who returns to his small town for a family matter, and has to get help from his best friend in high school, who he hasn't seen in 15 years. Written, Directed & Starring Kris Avedisian, and co-starring Jesse Wakeman, it sharply draws cringing but hilarious comedy out of realistic characters and situations, and digs deep into the awkwardness of male friendship. Now playing in New York and Los Angeles. We also review the satirical action comedy "Catfight" starring Sandra Oh and Anne Heche, directed by Onur Tukel; the Palestinian hip-hop drama "Junction 48" directed by Udi Aloni and co-written by Oren Moverman (Love & Mercy); and experimental documentary "The Human Surge" directed by Eduardo Williams.
