The year has ended, somewhat mercifully, and it wasn't the best year for TV, either. Strikes, endless streaming service turnover, and leftover COVID production and script delays led to one of the oddest and most scattershot years in TV history. Our TV critics, Matthew Ehrlich, Omar Gallaga, Scott Gold, and Neal Pollack cover it all. There is plenty of good to mine. Omar loved shows like 'Fallout' and 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith', but he and Neal talk in detail about Julio Torres's 'Fantomas' and John Mulaney's 'Everybody's In L.A.' Scott pops in to join the Shōgun discourse. Neal had problems with the Anglo lead, Cosmo Jarvis, but Scott and Omar both assure him that the Japanese cast takes over by the end.Scott's favorites included Guy Ritchie's 'The Gentlemen,' and both he and Neal fanboy over Theo James for a few minutes. It's the rare TV continuation of a movie that actually improves on the original. Neal's picks include the Australian sitcom 'Colin From Accounts,' which he and Omar both agree is totally delightful. Now for the bad news. Matthew Ehrlich thinks 'The Perfect Couple' is ridiculous, a bad Netflix version of Succession that includes a cheesy murder mystery. He's also not high on the new network procedurals, like 'Elspeth,' 'High Potential,' and 'Matlock,' which like AI wrote them. In addition, he offers a counter-attack on 'Hacks,' which does a disservice to the memory of Joan Rivers, and he offers the perspective that Rivers was actually friends with Donald Trump and might have been a victim of cancel culture if she had lived to see the day.Omar likes Hacks, but has his pans too, and he and Matthew take turns battering the "icky" and weird and unappealing Baby Reindeer, which is getting praise around the joint but does not meet our approval.Neal then goes off on several shows, including 'Last Bite Hotel,' a weird semi-horror-themed Food Network show starring Titus Burgess, 'The Acolyte,' and especially the new season of Doctor Who, which featured a character who was literally the spirit of Christmas, and some gross, weird, "Space Babies."Here's hoping for a better 2025 for all TV viewers! A new season of The White Lotus is coming.

We don't know our hobbits from our harfoots (really!), but that won't stop us from reviewing THE MOST EXPENSIVE TV SHOW EVER. Yes, we're journeying to middle-earth to discuss the first three episodes of Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It's a show that promises an epic story, sumptuous visuals, and even more rings than the movies! Does this big budget prequel deliver? How is anyone supposed to remember all these character names? And can we stop ourselves from comparing it to House of the Dragon? But before we answer those burning questions we'll ask some disturbing new ones posed by this week's news. Questions like “who resurrected the Teletubbies and why is Titus Burgess hiding behind them?” ———

Join us for another week of laughter, TV shows, streaming, movies and all things entertainment. THIS WEEK WE'RE TALKING Movies Catfight (2016) Mission Impossible III (2006) Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) A Quiet Place Part II (2020) TV Shows Shetland (S6) Ozark (S4 - Part A) Top Boy (S2 on Netflix, or S4 on IMDB) MOVIE OF THE WEEK & PEAK PERFORMANCE Catfight (2016). Sandra Oh, Anne Heche, Alicia Silverstone, Amy Hill, Damian Young, Ariel Kavoussi, Stephen Gavedon and Titus Burgess. Directed by Onur Tukel. And finally our Peak Performance nominations are in for Willem Defoe. EPISODE TITLE This weeks episode title is dedicated to the cast and crew of Top Boy. Top Boy seasons are a little confusing, but let me break it down for you. If you're watching on Netflix you'll see Top Boy as Season 1 & 2, but if you're looking on IMDB, you will see four seasons of Top Boy. The reason for this is the original seasons have been retitled Top Boy: Summer House (2 seasons), also on Netflix in NZ. They're a little older. Then Drake, yes the rapper, came along and was like, bruv. I've got the P's, let's get this back on the air. So in some places it's considered a soft reboot, but it's actually a continuation of the story. Look, just watch Summer House and then Top Boy. Thank me later, bruv. "I only ever want to be Ben Harper famous." Drew Gasparini is an award winning musical theatre songwriter and performer. Currently he is writing the scores for a number of new stage musicals including the Broadway-bound adaptation of The Karate Kid, an adaptation of Night Shift for Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, and an adaptation of the Ned Vizzini novel/film It's Kind of a Funny Story for Universal Theatrical Group (book by Alex Brightman), among others. Some of Drew’s original musicals include Crazy Just Like Me (winner of “Best Of Fest” and runner up for “Best Book” in the New York Musical Theatre Festival 2011), and Make Me Bad (book by Alex Brightman, Bloomington Playwrights Project, winner of PACE New Musicals). Drew was a contributing composer for the fictional musical Hit List on the NBC series Smash, and in 2019 wrote the music for Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical, a highly publicized PR stunt starring Michael C. Hall for Super Bowl LIII. He has released several of his own albums, and on January 13th, Drew launched his new podcast "Now We're Talking with Drew Gasparini" on the Broadway Podcast Network. Born and raised in southern California, his father a drummer and his mother a music teacher, Drew recalls that “music was like water, food, and oxygen” in his household. But it was ultimately his music teacher in high school who, after listening to some of his original songs (which he began writing when he was 12), challenged him to work harder and inspired him to dedicate his life to songwriting. Drew chronicles the journey which took him from living out of his car in LA, to writing his first musical and moving to New York City; where a few years later, he put up a concert of his songs starring Titus Burgess, Jeremy Jordan, and others. He shares that some of the best education he’s had has come from failing in New York, and reiterates that there are going to be down moments for all artists, but if you love it, you have to stick with it. Drew has signed 5 contracts for projects which were Broadway bound but never made it, which he says only makes him hungrier - “I want to write something that’s left behind in a big way.” This dream could just be on the horizon, as Drew recollects landing his current big project - writing the score for the Broadway bound adaptation of Karate Kid. In this episode, we talk about: Wanting to be Ben Harper famous Getting “permission” from success The first song he ever wrote at age 12 Leaving school to travel the west coast with his band “Drew G and the B” Creating his “Now We’re Talking” podcast Connect with Drew: Subscribe to his podcast IG: @drewgasparini Twitter: @drewgasparini Listen to him on Spotify Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. On this episode of Kickin' & Streamin', Jocelyn is back (Yaaaaaay!). Graham & Jocelyn discuss Netflix original movie Dolemite Is My Name, a biopic about the life and work of comedian, actor, producer, dancer, and rap icon Rudy Ray Moore, starring Eddie Murphy. Jocelyn begins by pointing out how statistically, she shouldn't have known much about Rudy Ray Moore, or the character of Dolemite, yet she did, even though she cannot bring herself to remember how exactly she became acquainted with both the character or the comedian. Jocelyn begins by saying how she enjoyed the movie although she started watching it without any sort of expectation. Graham points out the movie is a feel-good type of movie about going after success despite how many doors may close on one's face. Jocelyn also describes the movie as a story about family, albeit not blood related, but family. Specifically the way Rudy Ray Moore kept and vouched for his friends and showcased their talent in all of his movies. Graham & Jocelyn discussed the cast, and Jocelyn particularly praised Da'vine Joy Randolph's performance as Lady Reed, who become a close friend and confidant of Rudy Ray Moore and was discovered by him at a moment in her life where she no longer dreamed of stardom. Graham & Jocelyn commented on the cast members and their cohesion within the story, Craig Robinson, Titus Burgess, Keegan-Michael Key, Wesley Snipes, Bob Odenkirk, Chris Rock, and a litany of actors who made this dynamic and absolutely fantastic movie. Graham commented on the movies dedication to the memory of Eddie's older brother Charlie, who passed away last year, and wondered if Eddie's long absence from the screen might be related to the loss of his brother with whom he was very close. Today the boys created their own church. They named it The Church of Something and afternoon you hear why, we’re confident you’ll agree that it would be the greatest church ever created. Heartland Movie Reviews: Dolemite Is My Name. The Netflix Original story about comedian Rudy Ray Moore, who created a flamboyant alter ego and became a blaxploitation legend in the 1970’s. Starring Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Craig Robinson, Mike Epps, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Titus Burgess.
Today I review the new Netflix comedy Dolemite Is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore. I talk about the Good, Bad & Ugly of the film and if it's a worth comeback comedy for Murphy. Check out my thoughts and let me know what you think if you've seen the film. Follow on Twitter and Letterboxd for more reviews. Thanks for listening and I hope to see you for the next episode.
Eddie Murphy's Dolemite Is My Name shows how Rudy Ray Moore became a black independent moviemaker—and became a role model for future DIY artists. In the latest "Low Key" podcast, we talk about how Rudy Ray Moore's Dolemite helped blaze a still-difficult trail for Tyler Perry, Robert Townsend, and other DIY moviemakers who continue to inspire. On every episode of "Low Key," we discuss subtle aspects of movies, television and other pop culture that we think deserve more attention. This week, we talk about how Rudy Ray Moore influenced not only hip-hop music, but cinema. Would hip-hop exist without Dolemite? Is Quentin Tarantino a hip-hop moviemaker? Something must be in the air. That has to be it. It can't be the wine. We oop our way through it all AND a Troll Patrol that gives new meaning to "Bitches who go to diners need to act right." That may actually be the only meaning for that. Oh, we got Wigs, too. Cuz we care about some stuff still. Thanks for listening!

Jessica Daniels is an emmy-winning casting director. She's warm, genuine and confident in her craft. We enjoyed a lovely conversation spanning her life and career and she generously shared tips for actors who are pounding the pavement and working toward their big break. Some of her notable placements have been: MIchael Sheen, Paul Giamatti, Bryan Cranston and Titus Burgess in 30 Rock. A Young Eddie Huang in Fresh off the Boat- Hudson Yang. She recently cast Chante Adams in her first film role right out of college - as the lead in Roxanne Roxanne. She won the Breakthrough Performance Award at Sundance this year (2017). That film comes out in September. Jessica also cast the young actor James Freedson Jackson in The Strange Ones that also comes out later this year, and he won Breakthrough Performance this year (2017) at SXSW.
