Kevin Phares is a man of many hats. A Naperville native and now student at ISU, Kevin is the host of the Saturday afternoon radio show “Speechless” on Cities 92.9, a Business Strategist for Great Plains Media, and the President of the Turning Point USA Chapter at Illinois State University. Minute Fifty-Seven: From Thor Fighting in the Tunnel to Coulson Entering the Tunnel Joining us to discuss Hawkeye, his weird placement in this film, and Thor's sense of direction are Andrew Darowski from Disney Animation Minute Essentials and Joe Darowski from The Protagonist Podcast ! In the fifty-seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Thor runs through the hamster cage for a while. Is he lost? Or is there some strategy? Andy reveals he mapped out Thor's entire run through the hamster cage. Unfortunately, there's a moment where they hide in the edits that he runs down the stairs to the lower level then suddenly is on the higher level again. Hrm... We see the shot of Coulson next to the crashed ATV from the script. Clearly they cut this early from the film because it's not included as a deleted scene. There's quite a bit of hand shots throughout this film, as Andrew points out. Is this a Branagh thing? Something to find a way to ground the story with these more tactile moments? Why does Coulson ask for someone to go up with a gun into the bucket. Didn't he know he was calling for Hawkeye? Should Hawkeye be chucking the bow into the bucket? Wouldn't he be taking more care of his gear? Why does the sniper go into a bucket hanging from a crane in a rainstorm? Wind... lightning... visibility... This doesn't seem like a safe plan. Interesting that they choose to go slo-mo when Thor kicks the guy through the wall of plastic. Thor may be confused, but there's a moment he's literally down the hall from Mjølnir. Sure, there are agents between him and it but that hasn't stopped him up to this point... When Hawkeye's up in the bucket, you can again see the broken hamster cage tunnel from the unseen ATV crash. Coulson goes into the Command Center. Oooohhh... electric static on the monitors... Barton's lines are so great here. Too bad we get so little of him here. As always, Coulson does a great job acting confident against things he completely doesn't understand. We meet Hawkeye! We talk through our histories with Hawkeye and what we think of his introduction here. Why do they do the whole gag of him reaching for a gun before reaching for a bow? Are we meant to think that this may very well be the moment he decides to switch to the bow, making this his origin story as well??? Does Hawkeye design his own arrows too? There's something about him that feels very Batman as a non-super who has mad bow skills. It's great to watch what Jeremy Renner does with him, even if this feels a bit last-minute. Was it a surprise when he showed up? Turns out, they released this footage before the movie came out. Perhaps they were excited they had a recent Oscar nominee... It's scripted as someone grabbing a gun. Did they film this with someone else then replace the footage with Renner, filming him later when making The Avengers? As always, we break down Renner and his movies IMDb says he's known for. And of course, we talk about his comic book origins. It's Hawkeye's official introduction into the MCU! It's easy to get shiny object syndrome [Like a blackbird] We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk One thing I am sometimes guilty of on the coaching programmes I'm part of (see the last four blogs if you've been living under a rock!) is…………. Getting distracted with exciting new stuff. I see someone else is using a specific bit of software, a new form of social media or a different approach to coaching……….. And I think “Oooohhh – that look interesting”. And can, sometimes, get pulled away from the key stuff I should be doing. Only to realise a few days, weeks or months later that I haven't been doing some of the basics whilst getting distracted by stuff I find more exciting. Again, we've all be there. Tempted by the shiny new object. It looks better and more exciting than what we're doing right now. Sometimes it is. Often it's not. It's different at best. Often less good. We just got all excited because it was new. Like we can with our health and fitness approaches. We see a new diet or some new facility or programme opens up……….. Our friend loses some weight, tells us how they've done it and it's something we haven't tried yet…………… So we jump from what we were doing before to this. Initially excited. Until that wears off. And we, possibly, do the same again a few months later with something else. Looking back after a while and realising that, if we'd have just carried on with what was working, we'd have got further in that time. Whilst our retention is good for the industry, people do that with us. Do a couple of months. Then jump to somewhere else. Then somewhere else. And so on. Often ending up back here as it was actually the thing that worked best for them. Returning members always stay pretty much indefinitely. Because they've made that shift in their heads that this is ‘for them'. They've committed longer term mentally. Their head's in a different space. They've got over that ‘shiny object syndrome' and started being consistent with one approach. Which, from my experience at least, always gets better results over all. You want an off season training program for your sport? For any sport? Long time listener Brent Wells does! So this episode we dive deep into the process of building an off season periodized program that will get real results! First place to start is to figure out what you are trying to accomplish by asking the right questions. Its not just about the right answers but more to do with asking the right questions: What are the power/strength requirements of your sport? Do you match these requirements? Time for a Needs Assessment! Choosing the right tests, screens and assessments can be the difference between success or a wasted off season. Make sure you are testing and comparing against the leaders in the sport by using the norms from your sport.  How do you test for strength and power? Is it safe for you to test your 1RM? Probably not so we need a better option!  Now you know where you sit in the needs assessment you need to determine whether or not you need strength gains or speed gains. The training program for each of these is very different.  Are you going to follow the traditional methods to achieve these physical characteristics like those laid out in Thomas Baechle & Earl in Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning or are you going to use new techniques?
