Hello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! It's time for I, I, You, and I to review the Urusei Yatsura: Only You! We're so excited to finally have the films streaming on Crunchyroll and coming to blu-ray courtesy of Discotek, and so we'll be periodically interrupting our coverage of the manga to review each movie! What better occasion to start than on our 10th episode AND just ahead of the upcoming blu-ray release of Only You coming later this month! We're starting off with the series's first movie, Only You, a much-beloved crowd-pleaser that director Mamoru Oshii was loath to make! While clearly a love-letter to the series, do we agree with Oshii that it's more of an extended episode than a “real film?” We discuss the fascinatingly fraught production history of Only You, analyze Elle as a parallel to both Lum and Ataru, describe the multitude of references and callbacks to the series, and evaluate the film's iconic music and far less esteemed english dub! They say a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, but where does this first feature fall among the other films in the franchise? Only you will find out by listening to our show! Our Final Thoughts and Expectations as We Prepare for Thor in Our Last Hiatus Episode This is our last hiatus episode between seasons three and four before we start breaking down Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor into one minute chunks to discuss each one in glorious detail. Because of that, we thought that it would be a good time for us – Matthew Fox and Andy Nelson – to discuss our backgrounds with the character of Thor, the movie, and the comics. The Movies and Beyond This episode gives us a chance to chat about our initial thoughts 10 years ago before we went into the theatre to meet the god of thunder, and what we thought afterward. It's a chance for us to touch on how our thoughts about Thor, Loki, and their stories between Asgard, Midgard, and the rest of the universe have changed and evolved over the decade as their characters have moved through the various films all the way up through to Loki and the upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder. The Comics We also talk about our connections to the comics. While Andy read comics throughout his life, Thor was never a title he picked up. Matthew rarely has read comics. But this show has given us both (mostly Andy) a chance to dig into the comics more to read the early Journey Into Mystery issues, JMS's line of Thor, Walt Simonson's Surtur Saga, and more. The Mythology This film provides us (mostly Matthew) a chance to go through more of the Norse mythology so we can better understand the origins. What's changed? What's remained the same and why? Have Loki and Thor always had daddy issues? Last Hiatus Episode Next week, we'll start our exploration of Thor. For now, pour yourself a drink, kick back, relax, and join us as we share our thoughts on the macroscopic level before we dig in deep next week. Essential Season Two TOS. When it comes to ranking the "best" episodes of The Original Series, there are Top Ten lists ... and there are TOP TEN lists. Unlike Season One, episodes from Seasons Two and Three are rarely represented. Believing these Top Ten lists are imbalanced in many ways, your Refit Team has revisited all three seasons of TOS to discover what we believe are true "essential viewing" recommendations. In this episode of Standard Orbit, we continue our coverage from Episode 119; delving deeply into Season Two with a more finely tuned eye and critical perspective. Our goal for this episode, and for all of the TOS "Essentials" podcasts, is to offer a new and perhaps in many ways - different "best of" list for each season so that newcomers to The Original Series can use our recommendations as an essentials starter kit; episodes chosen from each season and not heavily influenced by any one in particular. Essential Season One TOS. There are Top Ten lists ... and there are TOP TEN lists. This episode of Standard Orbit is about the latter. Many online lists, from prominent geek culture websites, favor Season One heavily and with good reason. Rarely if ever, are Seasons Two and Three as equally represented. Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast

The Commodores of The Original Series. Several episodes in The Original Series introduced a few high-ranking and "intrusive" characters that shared one commonality: the rank of Commodore. From the Ahab-esque Matt Decker in The Doomsday Machine, to Robert Wesley who was in charge of the M-5 Multitronic System proceedings in The Ultimate Computer, to Commodore Stone who moderated the legal proceedings in Court Martial and several more; the Commodores were an authoritative, bureaucratic and at times overbearing extension of Starfleet Command. The Commodores added an additional layer of dramatic effect in The Original Series as they were usually at odds with Captain Kirk, Mr, Spock and the ongoing Five Year Mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. They were akin to the overbearing and controlling "authority figure" that Kirk, Spock and others had to struggle against and overcome; a dynamic to which many younger viewers in the late 1960's related. In the end, the Commodore rank never extended past The Original Series save a few minor references in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Enterprise Incident Commentary. As a follow-up to Standard Orbit 116: The Real Enemy Is War Itself, The "Refit" Crew wanted to take a look at the only other episode in the entirety of the 79 of The Original Series that featured the Romulans. We also wanted to do something a little unorthodox for this podcast. We are doing a "live commentary" of The Enterprise Incident–a very polished and exciting episode from Season Three and what we felt was the perfect compliment and a fantastic continuation of the Romulans and their alluring mystique that began with Season One's Balance of Terror. Please note that we will be commenting specifically on the HD remastered version and several of our comments address the amazing quality of the visual effects and overall production of The Enterprise Incident. If you are listening to this show in your car, or commuting to work or school, this probably won't make that much sense to you, unless of course you have this particular episode committed to memory. We hope you take the time and opportunity to sync up your rewatch of The Enterprise Incident with our commentary to accompany you. Enjoy! How The Enemy Below Influenced Balance of Terror. The Enemy Below tells the story of the epic "cat and mouse" game between an American Destroyer Escort Captain and the commander of a German U-boat. This 1957 World War Two classic film directly influenced Star Trek writer Paul Schneider as he crafted the narrative for what would become one of Star Trek's greatest episodes. Balance of Terror was a ground-breaking episode for Star Trek, as it brought a "military" essence to Starfleet and allowed the audience to grasp the political tapestry of The United Federation of Planets in the 23rd Century. Balance of Terror is a fan favorite for many reasons: the introduction of the Romulans, the humanizing of the enemy, and the application of sound naval tactics to help drive the narrative tensions. It was also famous for its bold decision to break yet another convention of the time: Women serving in combat. Almost 30 years later after this episode was produced, women were finally allowed to serve on warships. In addition, the military does not normally allow married couples on the same vessel for fear of that couple being killed outright in combat as almost seen with Robert Tomlinson and Angela Martine. The Alternative Factors. Alternate realties, alternate universes, and alternate timelines essentially share the same family tree if you will. The point where the tree trunk meets the ground is the Big Bang; the focal point for every conceivable timeline. As the tree grows, limbs sprout off in every direction, branches sprout from those limbs, twigs sprout from those branches and so on and so forth. Most of the realities that we have seen on Star Trek are universally similar; the laws of physics, historical figures and events, significant locations and most importantly, the main cast of characters. On May 8th 2009, the eleventh Star Trek feature film boldly went where no Trek had gone before: rebooting and reimagining the franchise under the aegis of J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot Productions. The film paid homage to the previous Star Trek continuity via a time-travel plot that ultimately created a new timeline; now only loosely connected to the prime universe. Whether it is called NuTrek or the JJ-verse, the Star Trek film continuity from 2009 is its own timeline. But the question remains: At what point did the timeline diverge from the original? Hosts Norman C. Lao and Jeffrey Harlan Production C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer), Norman C. Dissecting Spock's Brain. On this episode of Standard Orbit, we prep for surgery and perform a deep dissection and examination of what Star Trek fans have labeled as the "worst" episode ever in the history of The Original Series, and was even parodied as a stage production in 2004 for a limited run in Irvine, California at the Irvine Improv! William Shatner, in his autobiography Up Till Now, and in his memoirs Star Trek: Memories, called this one of the series' worst episodes; a "tribute" to NBC executives who slashed the show's budget and placed it in a bad time slot. There was a great deal of unrest happening behind the scenes at the beginning of Star Trek's third season. Gene Coon was trying to complete his writing contract and director Marc Daniels felt marginalized by executive producer Fred Freiberger. The show budget was always under pressure which in turn forced co-producer Robert Justman and Fred Freiberger to constantly redirect creative to fit production, increasing tensions between them and the NBC front offices. Did these underlying forces ultimately affect the return The Original Series on September 20th, 1968? Hosts Norman C. Lao and Jeffrey Harlan Guest Ken Tripp Production C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer), Norman C. Star Trek Beyond the Trailer. The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released on December 14, 2015 and was immediately and severely criticized by the Star Trek fan community at large. Focusing too much on action, such as James T. Kirk performing some thrilling heroics on a motorcycle, the overwhelming fan response raised a very interesting question: Did the combination of Justin Lin, Director of The Fast and the Furious, in concert with the explosive styling of this trailer, cause an unjust reaction from the fans based solely on some ninety seconds of footage? On this episode of Standard Orbit, we will take and in-depth look at the speculation surrounding the trailer, delve deeper into why the fans reacted in such a volatile manner and go even further … beyond the trailer itself. Two days after the trailer's release, Simon Pegg told audiences, “There’s a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more of what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ But, you know, they’ve got to bring a big audience in, they’ve got to bang the drum. So to Star Trek fans, I’d say hang in there, be patient."  Hosts Norman C. Lao and Jeffrey Harlan Guests Ken Tripp Production C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer), Norman C. Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast

What's Past Is Prologue. Nostalgia is perhaps one of the most powerful forces that influences our lives. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary’s second definition of Nostalgia describes it as being “a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition; also: something that evokes Nostalgia.” In today’s world of recycled Hollywood content, reboots, refreshes and retellings - has the entertainment industry created a rift in Star Trek fandom, to the point where preserving the "glory days" is the only way for some fans to move forward? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Norman C. Lao and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Portal 47’s Larry Nemecek and Mission Log’s John Champion. They take a deep and concerned look at the power of Nostalgia and its undeniable influence over fandom's appreciation for Star Trek; specifically The Original Series, and share their observations towards Nostalgia as it continues to influence the interpretation of perhaps the greatest of Star Trek's tenants: IDIC - Infinite Diversity through Infinite Combinations. Terra Nova. An Episode Lost in Translation. One of the main goals for Warp Five is to give our listeners a fresh and positive perspective on Enterprise. It is only journalistically responsible for us to not only discuss the "positive" elements of this series...but the "problematic" as well. To be sure, there were issues that plagued all four seasons of Enterprise ranging from poor writing to severe interference from the UPN and the powers that be, ultimately causing "uniquely memorable" moments to happen within this series. Terra Nova unfortunately was one of those moments and one of the most severe.   Terra Nova was listed on five different fan review websites that categorized and listed the "worst" episodes of Enterprise and of Star Trek. When I reviewed the sheer vitriol that Terra Nova suffered from online reviews, I was shocked, intrigued and bewildered that this episode was so poorly received. So...what happened? How could two veteran Trek writers in Berman and Braga just utterly and completely misfire? Pull up a chair and join us in The Conference Room for a fantastic, open and honest discussion of this very controversial episode!   Host Norman C.
