This week we're talking with Bradley Weiss, who has a unique double lined up. This weekend he'll tackle his first Ironman at Ironman South African and then two weeks later he'll look to defend his Xterra world title in Maui. They're two very different events; how has he prepared for that? Bradley talks to us about getting into Xterra coming out of school in South Africa, practicing his skills, and some tips for those of you looking to try off-road triathlon. He went on to win two Xterra world titles, and then moved over to 70.3 on the road. Bradley was coming off his second Xterra world championship in 2019 and a top 10 at 70.3 Worlds—and then COVID hit. While life has been good to him in the last two years — a wife and a baby on the way — he also talks about managing the ups and downs of triathlon and performance. And what he'd change if he was in charge of the sport… If you're interested in following along with Ironman South Africa this weekend, you can tune into Ironman Now's Facebook Live coverage on Sunday, which will be overnight Saturday for those of us in the U.S., or catch up with our weekend recaps on Triathlete on Mondays.

Christine, Gerhard and Rienzo chat about their December "break", their highs and their lows, and how they will tackle the rest of January, with just 74 days to go until their first ever Ironman South Africa. You don't play triathlon. You play soccer; it's fun. You play baseball. Triathlon is work that can leave you crumpled in a heap, puking by the roadside. Getting started in triathlons and Ironman events is daunting for most individuals. Do you know that almost 40% of the field at the start line at first-time participants? Why and how did they decide to embark on one of the world's most gruelling endurance events? What is a WHY? It is the purpose or belief that drives every one of us in life. It is what will guide us towards ultimate fulfillment. For the 3 of us, triathlons are the intersections of all our dreams and all our fears. Christine, Gerhard and Rienzo share their WHY and explore what journeying towards and participating in their first Ironman South Africa 2020, means to them. "People who think that an IRONMAN is unattainable – I tell them that it is possible. I can take anyone – a person that does not have an athletic bone in their body and make them into a triathlete if they’re willing to put in the time. I’m the perfect example. I am not a great athlete, just a hard worker." – John Duke, IRONMAN Legend Drop us a line if you want us to delve into the challenges you face, and send us your questions we can try to get answered: info@solebuddies.co.za

Maja Stage Nielsen fortæller om sæson-debuten i Ironman South Africa og forventningerne til resten af sæsonen.
A big race from Jan and Frodeno at Oceanside last weekend. We also preview Ironman South Africa that's happening this weekend.
In April 2017, Helen Susannah Webb became the first visually impaired female athlete to complete Ironman South Africa. Born with a genetic condition that results in sun sensitivity and visual impairment, Webb knew that if she ever had the lucky opportunity to race in the United States, she wanted experienced American, Caroline Gaynor, to be her guide. They got their chance this past October when Webb was selected as one of only five physically impaired athletes to compete at the Ironman World Championships in KONA! Caroline and Helen didn't meet until race week, but their "Ironman Blind Date" (pun totally intended) was a huge success! No Ironman race is without drama and Caroline and Helen certainly had their fair share of those moments. They talk about the highs and lows of their race and, ultimately, what they both learned from an event of this magnitude! This week on the podcast I chat with Brad Brown about his most recent Ironman Finish. He just finished Ironman South Africa which was his 5th Ironman finish. Brad Brown like myself is a host of a podcast. His podcast is called The Kona Edge. He is a sports journalist in the beautiful country of South Africa. He started his journey to endurance sports with an attempt at the very famous Comrades Marathon in 2010. But before he could give that a go he had to lose some weight. He tells the story of his journey losing 1/3 of his body weight and the trip to the start and the finish of Comrades Marathon and then also Ironman South Africa. Brad talks about how he found his way to triathlon by adding cross training to his run training. We chat about how he got from racing Ironman and running to podcasting. The only way to get onto the Kona Edge is to make it to the world championships in Kona. Which has got to be one of the most stringent criteria for being a podcast guest out there. This is Brad's 5th Ironman but like many people he battled an injury during training and he did not have the training build up he had hoped for. We talk all about the Ironman South Africa course and the weather conditions in Port Elizabeth. Brad tells the story of his race at Ironman South Africa 2016. We talk about walking an Ironman marathon. We talk about racing with family. He's raced with both his brother and his father. I learned that in South Africa they call jelly fish blue bottles which is a much prettier name than Portuguese Man o' War like we call them in the States. We talk about battling through dark spots during the race and the amazing energy of an Ironman Finish Line. We talk about his favorite part of the Ironman South Africa course. We talk about the event that may or may not have happened with pro Triathlete Jodi Swallow and a television helicopter that may have knocked her off her bike. Brad and I speak about how to stay motivated when training for Ironman year after year. He gives some good advice and it's worth a listen. We do some chatting about the dream of going to the Ironman World Championships in Kona. Brad is going to be running the Cape Town Marathon. And the Ultra Trail Cape Town. He's also got 2 Oceans and Ironman South Africa, JoBerg to Sea and Comrades marathon again. He is also putting together an online summit about all things Ironman. Check it out at www.theimsummit.com ( I've already signed up).
If you are doing the double this year, a lot will depend on how you go at Ironman South Africa this weekend. TalkFEED — Ironman Wales is one of the toughest Ironman triathlons on the circuit. Despite the tough course the weather tends to not play along either. This past weekend was no different. The racing was intense, as it always is in an Ironman, but in the end it was another South African who picked up the win. He finished 30th overall and second in his age group at the Ironman World Championships in Kona in 2013 and has now picked up his maiden win on the pro circuit following a 5th place on his pro debut at Ironman South Africa in 2014.Matt Trautman joins us on this week’s Tri Talk SA to talk about the race and the win and also to share his inspiring journey into triathlon. Chris Bohannan was instrumental in helping bring in Zoot arm coolers with Xylotol (sweetener used in chewing gum) built-in, which brings a cooling sensation when wetted. He goes into that science and even more in this interview about whether body cooling vests, gloves, compression gear, etc. actually works, and how it may work. You'll learn: The advantages to keep the body more cool than it may be able to achieve on it's own - before, during or after exercise... How body cooling devices and gear work... First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== chunkybearcub asks via Twitter @bengreenfield: if training fasted makes u more efficient at burning fat, won't your body prefer to burn glycogen when u rest as a result? David asks: Could you please give your opinion on Greens to Go available at Costco? How does it compare to the Greens products you usually recommend? Dan asks: Can you discuss IGF-1 on your podcast? Seems a bit confusing. The HGH and fitness community seems to embrace both IGF-1 and HGH. They even have a diet called GOD, gallon of milk per day where athletes may indirectly get huge IGF-1 supplementation. This crowd downplays any health concerns and actually states how wonderful the stuff can be. The other group of people are selling neither milk nor HG stimulants but may be selling sensationalism. I'm not sure.... This back-to-nature and non-GMO crowd seems to be warning of cancer and other health problems from dairy and specifically but not limited to rGBH added to cows milk. They also warn of even larger IGF-1 levels from soy protein isolate. There are websites that discuss HG stimulator such as Somnidren-GH™ as very dangerous. They state that whey protein is dangerous because of IGF-1. Any simple guidelines you can provide for optimum health? Bracken asks: I read the book Born to Run. They mentioned Chia Seeds, and I got some. I've been eating them with yoghurt every morning (a tablespoon or two). Are you a fan? Why haven't they hit the more mainstream if they're as power-packed as they seem to be? L_Smoothy asks via Twitter @bengreenfield Just wanted to know, when jogging, how detrimental stopping for a breather is to gaining fitness? David asks: I'm using your Triathlon Dominator program to train for Ironman South Africa in April, and as I've gotten stronger and leaned up I've started to notice prominent veins in my arms and legs, particularly in my legs. I don't think that is necessarily a problem, but just want to be sure. Is this normal and healthy? Tyler asks: I have heard many times carbonation is really bad for you and really hurts fitness and speed, but I have heard you say you love carbonated water. Could you please clear this up for me. Cheri asks: What's your take on Oxygen in a small can to help with either longer "ultra" runs 50k+ or 100 milers w/ high altitude. Do you think it will really make a difference? Gary asks: Im working with a 15 year old kid, who is taking a curcuit training class. He wants to gain muscle but struggles w/ gaining weight since most of his food isn't absorbed...he has attempted to keep weight on by eating heavy fat foods & fast food. I know healthy foods are less calories. What can I suggest for food & how can I help w/ curcuit class? In my response to Gary, I mention Holistic Fueling For Triathletesbook. Chuck asks: I wanted to understand better why we benefit more from training, for example, like 6 days a week, as opposed to just going really hard 2 or 3 days in a row and then taking a day off? Joshua asks: My bike sessions are all on the trainer right now due to the weather, so I have complete control over all the externalities that would throw off my planned session. When I have my longer aerobic rides on the weekend, should I focus on spinning fast at a low gear, or moderate on a mid gear, or slowly on a big gear to keep my HR in zones 1&2? ArmiLegge asks via Twitter @bengreenfield How did Ben Greenfield eat as a kid and bodybuilder and how has his diet changed since. What are the results/differences? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Our group HEAT (Hartford Extended Area Triathletes) has a Sunday swim program at Cornerstone, a terrific swimming facility in West Hartford, CT.We began in November, and will continue til June. We rent four lanes at the pool, and range from beginners to Hawaii Ironman finishers. We've had a volunteer coach, Rich Flores who has been fantastic. He has especially worked with the people who have room for improvement while the fast people beat the heck out of each other in lane four. Rich has a great record of coaching young people who have gone on to succesful swimming careers in high school and college. This is his first time with mostly older athletes. He has a wonderful combination of motivation and teaching the technical side of stroke improvement. Website of the Week Chris Tasker sent through this weeks website, it’s www.neovite.com. It’s a company that sells Colostrum which is a dairy food high in nutrients and protective agents that have natural immune and repair factors. The reason we like this website is because they have lots of information on why it’s so good. Coach’s Corner John went to a coaching conference about triathlon last weekend. He gives some insight into what he learnt, it’s a great discussion.
